Greetings All,

Not important weather news but...............

Day 17 with no rain and none in sight.
Lawns & countryside looking dry and brown.
Hard to find green grass. Just a matter of time before water trucks start appearing on the roads.

Greetings All,

Really crazy weather this month on Nevis. Highs today of 77 F add in a cloudy rainy day a wind speed of 15-20 knots and you have a feel like mid 60’s temps here.
Does NOT qualify as a “beach day”.

Dear PWS Owner,

We want to take the time to acknowledge, explain and apologize for the PWS network issues that you may have experienced over the past week. We’re happy to say the issues are now resolved and your service is fully restored.

The interruption of service was related to the hot patches applied to our servers to correct the recent Intel hardware security flaws. We can say with 100% confidence that the data you share with us is completely safe. The patches required systems to be rebooted and, as these systems came back online, many of them did not boot up cleanly.

Weather Underground was founded 23 years ago and some of the code and infrastructure supporting the PWS Network still date back to 1994. We invested significant resources to modernize that infrastructure in 2017 and those updates are nearly complete.

We thank you for your loyalty over the years in contributing to the World’s Largest PWS Network and look forward to continue serving you.

Good afternoon everyone,

The weather forecast for Monday threatened cloudy skies and isolated showers. In reality we had a sunny and dry day.

Tuesday was another fine day but cloud built up towards the evening and we had a couple of overnight showers.

The latest four day forecast for St. Kitts and Nevis forecasts fine weather for the rest of the week.

  • Date: Thu, 23 Nov 2017 23:13:43 +0000
Good evening all,

St. Kitts and Nevis Four Day Forecast.

Image

The forecasted weak low level trough passed by the islands giving some isolated evening and early morning showers, Wednesday into Thursday. Late Saturday and into early Sunday another trough is expected to pass through the area. This again may produce an increase in shower activity.
However, Monday night, a surface convergence of two prevailing air flows in the area, may result in more intense weather conditions. Widespread showers and possible thunderstorms can be expected.
Otherwise mostly dry weather will prevail with at most a moderate chance of showers.

Attached is today's sunset.

Frank Goodwill

Good afternoon all,

Four day forecast for St. Kitts and Nevis

Image

A pleasent South Easterly breeze blowing with a slight chance of an evening or overnight shower. There is a chance of an increase in shower activity on Friday as a frontal trough moves through the area.

A couple of noon time photos attached showing the weather today.

NEVLEC Update.

We have had some NEVLEC grid stability return to our electricity supply here on Nevis. There have been some major maintenence issues at the power plant at Prospect. At least they have improved on the updates to customers and residents and hopefully there will be a major improvement after Thursday this week. This is without any major damage from hurricanes.

- Unsettled Week
  • By Frank Goodwill <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Sun, 5 Nov 2017 22:22:53 +0000
Good evening all,

A weak trough system is forecast to continue to generate some unsettled weather across St. Kitts and Nevis with cloudy spells and showers into Monday. This will be followed by a brighter start to Tuesday but another weak trough system will move into the area later in the day and into Wednesday. This will generate cloudy conditions and a higher chance of showers.

We are still experiencing power outages today Sunday (Gingerland/Windward areas) as Nevlec appear to be struggling with upgrade/repair work on the generator sets at the power station.

Good day everyone,

After a four week break I have finally got my internet sorted out after it suffered damage from Hurricane Maria. Part of the reason was being off island for a while as well. A new cable has been installed by my provider and the modem needed to be replaced. The modem started to fail as a result of the continued Nevlec grid power outage problems. We are still having the occasional outage even after the new generator was installed at the power plant.

My Ambient weather station survived both Irma and Maria unscathed.

Anyway weather station stats are back on line and can be viewed at:

It may take a little while for everything to appear.

Next on the list is the weather cam.

Greetings All,

Arrived back on Nevis after many flt changes & delays.
Have downloaded data since I've been off island and some interesting data?

IRMA
Total Rain Fall = 2.90 inches
Lowest Barometric pressure = 29.35 at 500 ft elevation

MARIA
Total Rain Fall = 7.75 inches
Lowest Barometric pressure = 29.62 at 500 ft elevation

Irma passed to North of island and closer but not in the powerful quadrant side of a hurricane.
while Maria passed to our south and further away but we were in the NW-N-NE quadrant powerful side.

Nevis is not as bad as the report sounds. Mains water and electricity came back to most of the island by Thursday morning. Well done them. The west facing coastlines have taken a bashing from south westerly seas. There are trees down but it's not major stuff. We have been spared again. 25 miles or so, south for Irma or north for Maria, and it would have been a different story.
I am sure the people of SKN will continue to do all that they can to help the islands so much more badly affected by these storms.

Good evening all

Śome property damage, lots of trees and branches down, coastal damage and flooding. Lots debris etc, around the ferry terminal and the beach bars were flooded down at Pinneys Beach. The NIA are still assessing the mpsct to the island.
Nevlec are busy restoring power where it is safe to do so. My area is still off due to the local power lines being down.

I haven't been out and about today as I have been busy being a lumberjack cutting up fallen
tree branches. There are lots!

See attached.

Today was declared National Clean Up Day in St Kitts and Nevis.

Can't complain as we have been let off rwice in quick succession.

Good evening all,

The wind have been easing off over the last hour but the rain continues.

Evening is drawing in so with no power/lights we will not see the full fallout from Maria until tomorrow.

  • Date: Tue, 19 Sep 2017 16:32:42 +0000
Good afternoon all,

It is still blowing with squally rain. At the moment in the foothills of Nevis Peak we are in a "grey out" listening to the wind whistling and the rain hitting the roof and shutters. Towels and mop at hand as water comes under the external doors.

I suppose due to my height location I am getting a little more wind than lower down.

Lots of reports of utility poles down and that will delay the restoration of power, phone and cable. Also trees and branches are reported down which in some cases have taken utility lines out. Nevlec have got some serious work to do.

We are now starting to get the "back winds" as Maria moves away from us. The winds switching to the south.

Estimate the wind will start to subside at about 2pm but we will still have rain bands following on. This is an estimate and not sey in stone.

Regards,

Frank Goodwill

Good morning all,

As we come to the closest approach of Hurricane Maria to Nevis, wind and rain has increased. I have had some guttering come down and it looks and if I have lost some roof shingles having a quick look outside. Reports to Nevis disaster management include trees and power lines down, a water main burst in Pump Road and two houses have severe roof damage.

A quick video taken a little earlier while it was relatively quiet.

A couple more hours and hopefully things will start to quieten down.

Nevlec power is still on after our little glitch mid-day. No further rain or showers have been experienced on my side (south) of Nevis. The day has been mainly cloudy and we had one of those pre-hurricane sunsets but not as good as Irma.

I have measured wind speed of about 28 km/h (17 mph) with a gust of 36 km/h (22 mph) and the 'breeze' has been slowly picking up as the day has progressed.

- Hurricane Maria. Nevis
  • By Frank Goodwill <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Mon, 18 Sep 2017 00:34:52 +0000
Good night everyone,

The US National Hurricane Center upgraded Maria to a hurricane at 5pm, and Nevis is under a Hurricane Warning.

SUMMARY OF 800 PM AST...0000 UTC...INFORMATION
----------------------------------------------
LOCATION...14.0N 57.9W
ABOUT 125 MI...200 KM ENE OF BARBADOS
ABOUT 255 MI...410 KM ESE OF DOMINICA
MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS...80 MPH...130 KM/H
PRESENT MOVEMENT...WNW OR 285 DEGREES AT 15 MPH...24 KM/H
MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE...982 MB...29.00 INCHES

Many people here knew something was coming but have been surprised at how quickly Maria has developed.

Maria's speed has slowed and with warm sea surface temperatures, little wind shear and no dry air, this gives plenty of opertunity to intensify.

Unlike Irma where Nevis was on the southern side of the Storm and therefore the weaker side, with Maria we are to the north side and therefore facing the segment with stronger winds.

An interesting mix to watch.

Many also seem to view the track of the Storm as a line on a map. Not quite the way to think.

As always I will try my best to report here, but be aware the power grid will probably be turned off Tuesday if/as the winds pick up and Internet access will be effected. I hope our new 3.85 megawatt Wӓrtsilӓ generator at the Power Station is OK.

A lot of effort has been made by privste individuals/groups to get supplies to Anguilla and St Maarten from Nevis. With the present situation this has come to a halt at the moment.

It is also St. Kitts and Nevis' independence day on Tursday, so celebrations will probably be cancelled. The last time that happened was the result of Hurricsne Hugo in 1989.

Well it looks as if Hurricane Maria is entering stage left looking at the Guadeloupe/Martinique radars (see attached)

It had been hot and dry in Nevis today. Sunny Sunday. (Piture of Nevis Peak attached).

Regards,

Frank Goodwill

- Some Hurricane facts......
  • By "Harry W. Hallstrom" <hwh888 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Sun, 10 Sep 2017 14:17:54 +0000

Some facts about hurricanes.........

Among the 24 most intense Atlantic hurricanes since 1924, Irma is currently tied for second in wind speed.

[snip] And tied for 12th place according to atmospheric pressure:[snip] “The Most Powerful Atlantic Ocean Storm In Recorded History” meme fits the narrative: Global warming is causing hurricanes to become more severe… Another lie.

Hurricanes are not increasing in severity

The National Hurricane Center’s hurricane climatology page has a handy list of Atlantic Basin tropical storms, hurricanes and major hurricanes from 1851-2014.  There is no statistically meaningful trend in hurricane frequency or severity.

[snip] While there might be a somewhat statistically significant increase in the number of tropical storms (R² = 0.2274), this could simply be due improvements in the detection and identification of storms at sea… There is no statistically meaningful trend in the numbers of hurricanes or major hurricanes.

There are also no statistically meaningful trends in the rates at which tropical storms are “blossoming” into hurricanes or major hurricanes:

Good afternoon all,

Well that's it as far as Hurricane Jose and Nevis is concerned. A wobble more to the north-west resulted in no strong winds and a couple of showers this morning.

The forecast for Jose is odd as it seems to turn back on itself at day 5 though it's strength decreases.

  • By "Harry W. Hallstrom" <hwh888 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Sat, 9 Sep 2017 07:14:48 -0400
Greetings All,

Latest NHC projected path puts Jose 120 mi distance from Nevis at it's closest point.

Hurricane force wind envelope still remains at 35 mi around eye. Storm force wind envelope extended to 140 mi.

That puts Nevis at the very edge of the winds.

Forward speed had slowed to 13 mph, as NHC predicted.

Fluff Stuff:

Straight line distance from Nevis to Eye = 145 mi.

Distance to closest point on projected path=88 mi

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles (55 km) from the
center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 140 miles
(220 km).

Greetings All,

It's been brought to my attention that when I say Jose "will me North of Nevis" I failed to accurately say NNE of Nevis. North being "0" degrees, NNE it's approx. 18-19 degrees from True North. Distance to Nevis remains the same but as Jose approaches nearest point Nevis will feel winds before that 6am time. When? I can't accurately predict. At present 17 mph movement 2 hrs before it's 34 miles further away. I'd say out of the wind field? It's also predicted to slow down along it present path so that complicates time factors. Suffice to say Nevis is still 100-105 miles away from the eye. Hope I'm not confusing anyone.

Good evening everyone,

Nevis remains under a Tropical Storm Watch, but again as we are on the southern side of the track of Hurricane Jose, we should get off lightly. Conditions may struggle to see Tropical Storm wind speeds generated (over 39 mph). The unknown for us is the amount of rainfall. This afternoon rain bands approached us but dissipated before reaching St. Kitts and Nevis. Saturday may be different.

I managed to get my router up and running and the weather station and weather cams are working. Again this is dependent on Nevlec grid supply and internet.

Good morning all,

Back on watch or the next event. Nevis is still under a Tropical Storm Watch The earliest possible time of Tropical Storm winds will be about 2am Saturday.

We had a couple of power outages in the Pond Hill/Gingerland area as Nevlec continue to repair pockets of disconnected customers.

My cable router has suffered from the continuous unplanned power outages (even prior to Irma) and turns itself off and wireless no longer works. Need to get a replacement – job for Monday. Can’t complain though at least I am not homeless and have breath in my body to sort it out.

After hurricane Irma some people still haven’t got the message in Nevis.

From the Nevis Solid Waste Management, General Manager.

“The NSWMA collection teams have been out since 2am, (Friday) in an effort to clean all communities as promised.  All is going well except over in Cane Garden, one resident has once again obstructed collections by having his car parked smack in the middle of the road, so our truck is unable to pass, to service residents further on.”

“Same thing happened earlier this week, same place, same car, during the pre-Irma cleanup, and we lost almost one hour waiting for the police to arrive to assist. The Police came and spoke to the individual, ……, who earnestly promised not to park to obstruct the garbage truck again.”

The view looking out this morning.

Good evening everyone,

The weather has improved as the rain bands from Irma have passed.

I am still flying blind at the moment as I have no internet and I am unable to access web pages from my cellphone.

So hopefully this is of some use.

Most of the island has been reconnected to the grid power. There are still some small pockets and individual properties that remain disconnected. Nevlec are still working on the problems.

Nisbet Plantation Beach Club has suffered considerable damage to the Sea Breeze Beach Bar, Decking and the beach itselg. The Great House and Cottages are all O.K. (Their briefing).

I had a short drive around my area and there are a lot of tree branches down and some Cable TV cables down. Also Hermitage Road leading up to the Hermitage Hotel has suffered wash out (again). Looking forward to the planned new road. Thankfully the many people I met are in good spirits and unharmed.

A thankyou to all those who emailed me with words of encouragement and prayers. Much appreciated.

This will be my last update concerning Irma. My own prayers and thoughts are with those on islands that have been badly effected and those still in the path of Irma.

I now have a busy couple of days putting my yard straight.

Regards,

Frank Goodwill

Good afternoon all,

We are now feeling the effects of the rain bands from Irma. We are having some long heavy periods of rain and have had a few rumbles of thunder. Overcast and misty up in the foothills of Nevis Peak.

We are under a flash flood alert (last I heard).

Progress has been made regarding Nevlec power restoration. Mainly around the Charlestown area, I am sure that the work is now being hampered by the weather conditions at the moment.

I think Nevlec need to put an effective comms plan in place though (not a new issue).

The 'all clear' has not been given for the island yet.

Good morning all,

Well I have opened my shutters to let daylight in. Still quiet breezy with the occasional shower. Nevlec generators came through the storm unscathed. Crews are out checking power lines for restoration section by section. To early for timescales as yet. Reports of trees down.

Greetings All,

Had to turn generator on at dawn. Surveyed yard, no damage. Broken branches and leaves about but that's it.
Gusty winds but not a lot a rain from this one.
In general not as bad as expected.

Good morning all,

Must admit I have just woken up after 4 hours solid sleep. Maybe an indication that things were not to bad on Nevis.

Dawn breaking. No power, no internet, and flying blind regarding what is happening in the rest of the world.

This seems to have been a 'dry' hurricane for us. Getting drizzle and wind gusts at the moment.

Had a look outside in the yard Cedar tree branches down but all else looks ok.

Barometer rising, wind speed slowly dropping.

Regards

Frank Goodwill

Well that was a wet and windy night which continues at 0614 the wind direction has changed appears to be coming from the south with the cloud movement. Not much rain saved the wind seems to have blown it off the roof. The Sea looks rough with waves coming up on the Beach.

For me we are safe

Best Wishes

Good morning all,

Still here! Being on the 9 o'clock point of Irma we are on the weaker side. We do not seem to be getting many rain bands accompanied by strong winds at the moment.

Local radio station is on air and taking phone calls from the public. No reports of any problems at the moment.

Picture of Guadeloupe rain radar shows the rain bands situation, with the strongest on the 3 o'clock point.

Siting in the dark, listening to the radio.

Good night everyone,

Well it looks as if that's it for a while. Nevlec power is off in the Pond Hill, St. John's/Gingerland area. Looking towards Prospect that seems in darkness as well so it looks island wide.

No major wind events as yet just the occasional gust and no rain.

Attached pictures, the southern sky over Saddle Hill and the sunset to the west in Nevis just after 6am - as also reported earlier by reporters in St Maarten/St Martin.

I may be able to do a few one liner reports.

Bye for now.

Good evening everyone,

Darkness and the night draws in. Presently there is a slight drizzle and the wind is picking up and has become gusty. Nothing to bad at the moment.

Guadeloupe rain radar showing the rain band near us (attached)

Also a 6pm video.
Power is still on in our area as can be seen from the street lights over on Saddle Hill. Reports say that power is off in the Canes Bay area though.

Regards,

Frank Goodwill

P.S. My Weather Cams are off line overnight to prevent damage. Weather Station is still up and running, grid power and Internet allowing.

Good afternoon all,

The cloud has started to thicken and the winds are still light. It is looking very gloomy and dark out there. We had our first downpour for a while and it seems a rain band is on its way to us. See attached Guadeloupe radar picture. To the left of the hurricane eye is a large area of rain that should be upon us by now.

The other thing to look forward to is slightly higher winds up in the foothills of Nevis Peak.

Downpour - shades of things to come.

Greetings All,

Just crossed my mind.......

If you are near the sea and have a cistern for water collection there normally is a lot of sea water picked up in the rain bands and in turn into your cistern. Sodium infused water not good. Shut off's? close them or plug the pipe into cistern or divert, somehow.

Good afternoon all,

Fairly quiet here on Nevis still, the breeze has also eased up for a while. The sky is pretty grey with cloud but there has been a little hazy sunshine.

Those in low lying flood prone areas on Nevis are being asked to evacute and stay with friends or family or go to a public shelter.

I have heard a fair bit of hammering as I suppose people are putting the last bits of protection in place. That work seems to have finished now. We sit and wait.

30 second video of the surroundings at 2pm
Attached is the Guadeloupe rain radar ☔ picture. Gives a good view of Irma as it approaches.

So far it's just a little overcast and the wind is starting to pick up.  We in Nevis don't like the current trend at all.  We have set up a Facebook Page for people to monitor Irma and it's impact on St Kitts and Nevis.  I'll be posting highlights to stormcarib, but anyone is welcome to join the FB group.

Older reports from Nevis have been moved to another page.
