Good colour satellite shot today. You can see the weather system that NOAA is carefully looking at near the Cape Verde Islands. This photo is from a second generation Meteosat, linked through Eumetsat operations in the UK. The new links being set up by NASA and The European Space Agency (ARIANNE Seviri) are getting very good!

- Dave is RIGHT! TROPICAL STORM?
  • From: "John Burnie" <john at yachtindaba.com>
  • Date: Fri, 28 Jul 2006 11:01:43 -0400

There is more concern today regarding the development of a system in the Atlantic - this pattern looks considerably quicker and sooner than the predictions yesterday. Latest NOAA email today:

TWOAT

TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK

NWS TPC/NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL 530 AM EDT FRI JUL 28 2006

FOR THE NORTH ATLANTIC...CARIBBEAN SEA AND THE GULF OF MEXICO...

A WESTWARD-MOVING TROPICAL WAVE...ACCOMPANIED BY A SURFACE LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM...IS LOCATED ABOUT 850 MILES WEST-SOUTHWEST OF THE CAPE VERDE ISLANDS. THIS SYSTEM IS CONTINUING TO SHOW SIGNS OF ORGANIZATION...AND UPPER-LEVEL WINDS ARE FORECAST TO GRADUALLY BECOME MORE CONDUCIVE FOR SOME ADDITIONAL DEVELOPMENT TO OCCUR OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS.

You can see the system developing on these two charts at about 35-40 west. This pattern will impact our latitudes within 2-3 days.

This is the scene in Guadeloupe today – compare this yesterday’s picture and the last tropical waves certainly gave us a bashing here in Guadeloupe. I include some clear charts of the forecast.

- Big Weather Here
  • From: "John Burnie" <john at yachtindaba.com>
  • Date: Tue, 13 Jun 2006 09:56:26 -0400

Made passage back to Guadeloupe just in time and, as expected, the “big weather” is here, (albeit some 12 hrs later than expected). Torrential rain and we are reading wind gusts of 50kts in the harbour in Pointe a Pitre (at 10.00 am today). I suspect this is quite localised as a storm, but it is a bad pattern as a result of the wave – this would be dangerous for any small yachts at sea around Marie Gallant and Les Saintes. Stay indoors, wrapped up and beware the quite violent thunder and lightening!

Looks like the first TD will arrive in 24 hours up north, so I am heading south and back to Guadeloupe today. Have been in Nelsons Dockyard in Antigua and “look at the crowds” in the picture!! Expecting wind in Guadeloupe on Monday as wave comes through. (30kts gradient wind?)
