- Some dry season rain..
  • By Chris Reed <reedprincess at hotmail.com>

A bit of an off and on rainy day here. Much appreciated after rhe blazing hot and dry days of the last week's or so!! Our cisterns, garden and foliage are much appreciative of the cooler temps and rain to top everything up!

Looks like a passing trough or some such, should be gone by tonight, but in the meantime - definitely enjoying some cloud cover instead of the blistering sun!

Stay safe out there....

- Showery day

Good afternoon!!
Well the official season is almost behind us, and this has been a doozy!  Thankfully, we here in St Lucia have been spared, but our hearts and efforts are still directed to our neighbors to the north. St Lucia has put in some major work to help our sister island Dominica in particular.. Their recovery is remarkable, and will still be a long time in the making.

Today has been a showery day here in the south. Off and on sprinkles followed by clear blue skies followed by quick heavy showers all mixed up. It has brought the temperature down a few degrees, which is very welcome!! Some nice breezes with the showers too - very welcome also..  Not enough rain to really eveb measure, but so far a few heavy downpours of around 5-6 minutes..  Good day to finish some around the house items...

All in all, we're all happy to out the 2017 season behind up and are looking forward to high season/drier season!!

Stay safe out there!

Haven't posted for a while... and I'm able to talk about it now.

This is not Dominica's page, but I was in Dominica during the passage of
Monster Maria and although my villa was completely destroyed, I was able to see the
signs and evacuate in time.

I'm safe and sound back home now, but although the sounds of that night clearly
remain in my mind, what really keeps on playing back is the aftermath sights
that I saw the morning of September 18th and September 21st when I decided to
hike into Roseau hoping to find a way back to SLU.
Long story made short is
that Dominica really needs all the help she can get folks.
I can't describe how dire the situation on the ground is.
It's over a month and there is no ETA on
when residential electrical supplies are going to be restored to 90% of the
island, running water is slowly being being restored as the lines pass
underground, lines to barely stocked supermarkets are hundreds of feet long.

I saw the word 'apocalyptic" used on the DOM page to describe how it looks on
the ground, and I concur.
Check with the Red Cross, send supplies via
NEMO/Geest, make monetary donations, shelter someone if you can, but help
someway, our neigboring people are suffering. Let's continue doing what we can
to help.

Could be us someday....

Well, it's been a wet and rainy day or two here. That little blob sitting over the southern Caribbean has brought some rainy days here to St Lucia.  Yesterday (Wed), some heavy showers early then light sprinkles most of the rest of rhe day. Very cool temps - a welcome relief!
Today is rainy and gray again.. Overnight was some heavy rain, while this morning is gray and gloomy and off and on showers..
The cooler temps are quite welcome.. Although hoping the sun comes out by tomorrow - two gloomy says is about my limit!

Well, Maria has moved out of the area, leaving a trail of destruction in her path.
Fortunately here in St Lucia,  the damage was minimal. Some flooding which has mostly receded, some trees down, some small landslides, some people out of power for a but, etc. It's mainly all cleaned up and the island was open for business today. Took a drive all around from Choisel through Vieux Fort - all good.
Airport is fine, flights came in no problem today.
We were very fortunate,  to say the least.
Our neighbors to the north,  Dominica especially,  did not fare so well. The island is just beginning to make contact with the outside world, and the picture isn't pretty. Massive flooding,  major landslides,  and a lot of destruction left in Maria's wake.  They are onky just beginning to to gain and idea of how bad it is... We won't know for several days.
Please consider supporting in any way you can.. There's info in the Relief link here, and the Red Cross is always a good option.

All eyes now turn to St Croix and Puerto Rico..

Stay safe out there.

I've had enough of this hurricane season!
It can end today as far as I'm concerned.
When the Prime Minister of Dominica posts that his roof has blown off and he had to be rescued from his damaged residence, you know it is utter and absolute devastation.

Dear Lord, have mercy on us and please calm the winds. Amen!

Maria's a nasty one, we still have rain and strong winds here in Marigot with flashes of lightening and thunder claps, but as the eye moves further North that should get better, feeling bad for those in Dominica, praying for them all and the other islands likely to be affected.

Well, it's nighttime here. For the time being, Maria seems to have calmed down for us.. Which usually means bad news for others.. Waiting to hear from friends in Dominica.. I know they went to a shelter, now we await word on their safety as Maria hits them directly..

There are reports of some landslides and minor flooding around the island. Rumor says some bridges down, but I have absolutely nothing to verify that with - just rumors.   Fence is down at the airport - but that thing goes down in a breeze, so no worries there..
Down here in the south, still have power - haven't lost it all day! Simply amazing, all things considered..
We've had no word from the government yet on whether the island will be open for business tomorrow, I'm assuming it will be - however the all clear hasn't been given, and probably won't be for some hours yet..
For us - safe and sound at home, having a lovely Netflix binge all day and some NFL tonight..

4:45 down here in the south and we're currently getting seriously heavy rains - can barely see my neighbor's house up the road!
Surprisingly we still have great power and Internet. And cell service is still up.
We've seen reports of a landslide in Anse La Raye,  and some roofs off around up north, trees down, storm surge, etc. Hard to find out details though as most are hunkered down safe at home..
Keeping an eye on our northern neighbors, Martinique and Dominica.   They're getting seriously battered.

- Maria effects up north
  • By Christopher Kessell <kessellc at gmail.com>
  • Date: Mon, 18 Sep 2017 16:37:20 -0400
Well my morning started off with power being cut off from around 4:45 am due to something I assume was caused by water or wind as we still had 28 VAC in the mains which amazingly was enough to power my LED lights! My fans and AC however shut down and the heat eventually work me up around 6 am… Started my generator around 8 am and it ran until 10 am when the power finally came back and its been on since then.

We have had nearly one inch of rain since last night with most of it having fallen prior to 2 am. The winds have mainly been out of the West with perhaps a steady 25 knots at most with a few heavier gusts. They have been predicting tropical storm force winds but I doubt we will get that and even Windguru is forecasting at most 33 knots continuous with gusts to 42.

I was down at the marina this morning and its full of boats from up and down the coast as well as a few boats from Dominica. Most boats appeared to be adequately tied down as well as mainsail Stack Packs etc. After leaving the marina I took a turn in by Pigeon island and was surprised to see six boats battling the strong Westerly and resulting chop in the corner between Sandals and Pigeon. Can’t imagine why anyone would subject themselves to that torture…

Two boats have dragged their anchors and ended up on the beach down in the southern corner of Reduit beach, I have attached a photo a friend of mine sent me.

Again its hard to understand why anyone would leave their boats down in that corner in a strong Westerly!

Well thats about is for now. Cap Estate is being subjected to a light drizzle at the moment and the winds are not all that bad, probably helps that I am reasonably sheltered from winds coming from the West to the North East. My weather station has recorded a maximum wind gust of only 29 mph...

Good afternoon!

It has been a day of intermittent rain from light drizzle to short bursts of heavy downpours. No lightning or thunder during the day although we had some thunderstorms early this morning about 2am.
Winds have varied from dead calm to strong gusts but predominantly light breeze.
In Soufriere, we have received reports of at least 2 poles with wires sparking.  Several downed trees. One at Ravine Claire that brought down some wires and a few trees blocking sections of the Etangs to Fond Gens Libre road.  So far no flooding reported or major slides.
Elsewhere on island there have been periods of strong wind gusts with driving rain and white-out conditions up north. I've seen pictures of minor flooding in Anse-La-Raye and a few downed trees in parts of Castries and Gros Islet. Down south just periods of heavy rain, no flooding. The sea swells/breaking waves have pushed up some rocks on the road at the end of the Hewanorra airport runway.
A light drizzle as I type.
My thoughts and prayers with residents of Dominica.

Stay safe everyone

Seems to be passing a little closer to St Lucia than initially forecast. CPA on
Stormcarib tool down to 80 miles, and the Wunderground App showing Maria just
73 miles from Monier. As trop storm force winds extend beyond 100 miles from
the centre, it is possible that over the next few hours we could experience
sustained winds over 40 kts from the West or SW.
Here in Monier max gust so far only 32 km/h.
Power still on.

Hi there.  Wow, reports from the north end are so different from down here in the south. Granted, they are closer overall, and we're separated by a solid mountain range.. But it's always surprising how different conditions are between north and south here.

Still good down here near Vieux Fort.  Not much flooding anywhere, a few branches down and such, power still going strong, cell service still running.

Absolutely loving listening to the angry ocean and enjoying the lovely cooler temps. And keeping fingers crossed that everyone is staying safe, using good judgement and not doing anything stupid just to get a cool selfie! Worried about our friends in Dominica....

Hi there all!

Well,  we've had some decent heavy showers off and on all morning, but nothing that's been real steady. Mainly they've lasted around 10-20 minutes or so, with some drizzle in-between.
The winds are here, pretty steady nut not extra strong.. Definitely keeping the temperatures more comfortable than they've been for a while!!
So far, power has been on all along down here in the south. A few surges overnight but nothing that knocked us out. Even Internet is back up fine around here. Fingers crossed it stays up and running!!

Well, here she comes TS Maria is on our doorstep. North of us, true, but her outer bands of rain and wind are right on our doorstep.
Government has officially closed all business and schools for tomorrow, Monday, in anticipation of the heavy rains and winds.
Right now, we're just beginning to get some grey skies and sprinkles. Not a lot of wind yet, in fact it's incredibly calm right here in the south. Could use some wind to help relieve the oppressive humidity!  I'm sure we'll get more than enough soon, and then I'll be biting my tongue.
Fortunately,  we're well prepared and ready for this one. Laptop, phones, backup batteries, kindle,  etc all  charged in case of power outage. Towels and buckets read in case of leaks or seepage. Cards, flashlights, boardgames, etc all out for entertainment if needed..   I'll update as I can.

Today it is beautifully sunny with a nice breeze, its always nice before a storm, we are doing our last minute preparations here, not a lot to do as we try and keep on top of things at this time of year.

I am hoping that the storm will miss us, but likewise I went to church and prayed for those that do fall into the storms path.

I expect the bay to start filling up with boats this afternoon, in time for the first bands which are due to hit us this evening.

I do hope Maria is kind as I have some important things to do this week.

Love and blessings to all

My cousin's wife said Harvey, Irma, Jose Katia... HIJK... She is convinced Mother Nature is trying to HIJacK the western hemisphere.
Irma wrecked a path of absolute devastation from the northern Leewards through the Virgin Islands and all the way to Florida and Tennessee.
Many expats and visitors have evacuated islands which suffered severe destruction but many islanders remain on their homeland.  Recovery and rebuilding will take years. My prayers, support and donation are going out especially to many of my relatives and friends who experienced losses.  We are mobilising to send specific care packages.  A relative of mine on Tortola had the roof of her apartment blown off but thankfully she still has a job.  Many residents there need money to buy basic items but the banks have not reopened so they cannot withdraw money from their accounts yet!  The banks were heavily damaged and are working on restoring some services but one of them could not indicate when any sort of service would be made available.

If you are reading this, please send any help you can give. See the main page for 'Relief Efforts and Where To Donate'.

Meanwhile TS Lee developed and is hopefully moving into the open Atlantic without threatening any island.

However 96L is now Potential Tropical Cyclone 15 and is threatening the Lesser Antilles. The NHC 5-day forecast cone shows PTC15 becoming a storm later today. Maria will be its name.  Maria is forecast to Hurricane just east of leeward islands.

Saint Lucia is now under a tropical storm watch so we have 2-3 days to prepare. Thant is exactly what I will be doing and so should you if you are anywhere in the cone.

Stay safe and dry everyone.

Well, we're good here in St Lucia. Keeping our fingers crossed for our neighbors up north - their looking to get hammered. Hoping they've all completed their hurricane preps and are battened down.

Here in St Lucia,  down here in the south, sunny and hot so far. Hitting Laborie beach for a while this afternoon, then cooping up at home.
The island is expecting some outer bands of rain and heavier seas later tonight and into tomorrow.
Update from NEMO earlier today:
"NEMO: Scattered moderate to heavy showers, isolated thunderstorms and dangerous sea swells expected during the next 24hrs. Remain vigilant and exercise caution."

By tomorrow night, should be pretty much back to normal... Again though, our fingers are crossed for our neighbors to the north. It's a huge storm, and strong - hoping it's just a quick brush before it moves on...

For the future, eyes here are now  on TS Jose...while exoected to shift north, it's too early to tell.

Never a dull moment during the season around here!  Stay safe out there!

Hello all,

Yesterday I took a group of children snorkelling (first time for many of them) at Anse des Pitons (Jalousie) and in a matter of minutes after we got there we had heavy rainfall accompanied by thunder. I didn't see any lightning though. I watched two waterfalls form, cascading down Petit Piton, one murky brown and the other white.  Obviously some erosion happening along and above the brown one.  Runoff caused a silt plume in the bay but we were still able to snorkel past the plume. After snorkelling we went to Piton Falls (a hot mineral-water waterfall and hot spring water fed pool. Just as we were about leaving we heard what we initially thought was thunder only to quickly realise it was rocks/boulders falling down the side of the Piton. We didn't get to see the boulders though, there is a bit of a forested cover/barrier.

Today has been unbearably HOT in St. Lucia.  It has crossed my mind that today would have been a better day to go snorkelling.

I have observed that whenever a wave or depression  (no-name systems) dump copious amounts of rain or are unusually windy, these systems move on to cause damage elsewhere in the Caribbean and the US.  Steve Harvey seems to be reading the forecast script of his namesake.
1. Harvey looked like it would dissipate only to make a come back.
2. And the winner of the landfall lottery is TX....
... No wait, the final winner will be LA.

Be prepared. Lots of West Indians live in Texas.

Well, Harvey started early this morning, and to be honest - at least here in the far south of the island - it hasn't been bad at all..
Heavier rains started around 2:30am or so, and they were off and on all morning long. Had a beautiful lightning show for a while also.. We haven't lost power or water or cell service, which is pretty remarkable actually!

Supposedly, we have s couple more hours to go.. So far, mainly just a heavy rainstorm more than anything down here.. Hoping the rest of the island is faring as well - tough to get any decent updates around here though!

Well, we're officially under a tropical storm warning starting at 6pm tonight, and on into tomorrow.. Although the "Potential tropical Cyclone 9"  is not yet a depression or tropical storm, it's expected to be later today/tonight..

Currently, at 1:15pm, it's sunny and still around here, and humid as all get out. Seriously still, hot and humid.. You can definitely feel something coming.

We'll be battening down the hatches and all later this afternoon, and will check back in later if anything does actually show up.

Stay safe out there...

Happy Birthday Gert!

Yesterday was my son's birthday, mine was last week and a cousins' is on Friday.  I'm hoping 91L does not mess up our weekend birthday celebration plans.
We are monitoring.
Stay safe everyone.

Hot, hot,  hot! And humid, humid, humid..  That sums up the weather around here lately....some scattered showers throughout the days, but mostly not enough to coll things off or break the heat wave... HOT!  It's been pretty still also, which isn't helping anything!

Hoping for some relief soon - preferably some tradewinds coming back our way... And not s tropical system.

Stay safe out there...

Well we just lost power in parts of Soufriere. Cause unknown.
Weather wise, it has been a rainy day with 'scattered showers' some heavier and longer than others.  Several strong gusts toppled items off my the shelves inside the house. Windows now closed.
It's a twenty toes kind of weather and now with the black out, sends everyone to bed earlier.
I'm watching Cat 6 blog with interest. I'm down casting. Hoping whatever systems that do develop miss all land and go fish.
Stay safe and dry

Whew!! Some serious rainy weather today. Was woken up around 5:45 or so this morning by a massive downpour and seriously loud thunder claps - sounded like the storm was stalled right over our house! Lol.  It's been showery all morning long so far, some sprinkles and some heavier downpours. Looks like a solid rainy day in store with more of the same.
It's some quite welcome rain as its also brought so cooler temps with it - very welcome after the last stretch of wicked heat.
Stay safe out there!!

- Sahara Dust Love it and Hate it

I took one meteorology course and that does not make me a meteorologist by any long shot but it did give me an immense appreciation for the work meteorologist do. Forecasting is not an exact science. It has gotten better than watching clouds gather, birds flocking and ants migrating to predict rain or storms approaching but it is still not perfect.  I've seen systems predicted to travel well north of the leeward islands barrel through the windwards. I've experienced no name systems dump a few months worth of rain in 24hours. There have also been plenty approaching storms that just fizzle before crossing over into the Caribbean.  I rather be safe than sorry. So mets warn away. The fittest will take heed.

So far I'm liking the season thanks to wind shear and dreadful ... I mean wonderful Sahara Dust.  As far as I'm concerned the SAL can stay as long as possible to choke all approaching storms. Some islands like mine cannot handle any major hurricane any time soon.  I see bloggers express disappointment when tropical systems fall apart. Dem crazy - I do a happy jig and send up a silent prayer of thanks instead. If their homes or businesses and families were in the path they would sing another song.

On the other hand it seems that once the air is polluted with Sahara Dust respiratory illnesses and conjunctivitis increases. (Just my general layman's non scientific observation)  So is SAL good or bad?

Well, TS Don is passing south of us, near to Grenada..  And for us here, pretty much a non-event.. Had some great skies, passing quick showers today, and some very good blowing  breezes with a few blustery blows along the way - and that's about it here.

Our thoughts to Trinidad, Grenada and St Vincent and the Grenadines... Hope they come through unscathed.

Stay safe out there.

Hi All,

The season is on again eh,
So far so good all passing well south, but that is not a good thing either. It
might just mean a slow climb up during the season...

Today has been a wet and dry day, it started out wet-ish, then we had some
great sunny weather and even went to the beach for a nice swim. But mid
afternoon it came pouring down again.
It has been like that till now. a few gusts of wind also.
Keeping an eye on Ts Don, and hope it keeps a good forward motion and clears
the island chain in double quick time.
None of us in the chain can really handle the mess the storms can cause.

people keep safe, stay dry and be ready at all times.

regards, ( 73 )

Well, according to NOAA National Hurricane Center, TS Don has weekend slightly, with max sustained winds back down to around 40mph.. The Tropical Storm watch for St Lucia has been discontinued as of about an hour ago.  Definitely still need to be prepared and keep an eye on it as we'll definitely be getting outer bands of rain and wind... Fortunately not as strong as earlier predicted.. We're not out of the woods though..

Already gray and overcast over much of the south with some cooking fresh winds.. I expect it will become more gray as the day goes on... Will keep you posted!

Stay safe out there!

Don  has strengthened overnight 50mph sustained winds, and is on a track towards Grenada,

I expect the Bay which is a natural hurricane hole to start filling up lunchtime with yachts seeking shelter.

Keep safe

Well, that lovely little blob/tropical wave passed over us late last night/early this morning. Some serious, serious rain for a few hours there! It was wonderful,  slept like a baby!  Garden got a solid soaking, which it needed, lawn looks even more green, all good.... Looks pretty clear for the next day or two, normal passing showers, hot and humid back on, etc.

Stay safe out there...

Having a - so far - pretty normal rainy season. Hot, humid, passing showers - check! A few days of all day rain scattered about - check! So far so good. Island is green and lush, mosquitoes and other flying bugs are out in force, fruits are falling off the trees we can't eat them fast enough - pretty normal for this time of year.  Keeping an eye on things, for sure!

Stay safe out there..

The day started off nice and hot today with blazing sunshine but has gradually deteriorated and its now raining!
I went down to the Marina this morning to see a friend and found several yachties, tying up their boats in preparation for the weather that may hit us on Tuesday.
At the moment, according to NHC its about 1000 miles out and is heading for the Southern Windward Islands. Slightly disorganised but has 50% probability of doing so over the next 2 days.

I, personally have checked my roof, cut some branches, cleared the gutters, all that remains is to get some water and candles, lets hope its just a storm in a teacup and comes to nothing.

- RAIN!!

Yeah, finally, some rain! Woo-hoo!

Yes, a small tropical wave is passing g us by, and while it definitely looks to be bringing much more rain and storms to our northern neighbor Martinique,  we're benefitting also. Last night (Saturday)  saw some light sprinkles and short showers passing through, with the early Sunday AM hours seeing some much heavier rains begin to fall. By 10/11am, we were having passing heavy showers and some good rolling thunder. Most of today has been light showers interspersed with some periods of heavier rainfall. My garden is getting a wondeful soaking, and water tank is finally getting a refill.   Looks like we should be seeing on and off showers for most of the day. I suspect the north of the island is seeing more rain, as they're much closer to the heart of the wave...but quite happy with what we're receiving here in the south!

Stay safe out there!
