Not a hint of breeze.  Soft air.  Silver sky and sea.  Plants thriving in sweet 
rain.

The big weather-blob out in front of us is impressive on the satellite and we 
are watching.  Time to see if raingear is in good condition.

Super-windy today - easy to get sand-blasted if you take a beach walk.  
Heavy overcast.  

NO sargassum at the moment (yea).

A bad day to wash windows or dive, a good day for relaxing or catching up on 
paperwork in-office.   


Weather in 2017 has not followed the “usual” patterns …….. rains came early, 
winds came late.

HI Middle Islanders

Sorry for the long delay in updating you.
I have just found a signal for internet and am broadcasting from Las Terazzas.  
   
Power is out island wide, and phones don’t work well either.


All clear was sounded mid-morning today.   Piers up and down the coast were 
damaged or destroyed.  Trees down all over the place.  
I have only seen the area from Mata Grande to Las Terazzas firsthand.   Stories 
of lost piers in town abound, but I won’t add to the rumor mill without knowing 
for a fact what happened.  Will try to get into town in next half hour to see 
and if I can get a signal will send off a report then.

Structural damage seems (in out area) to have been confined to lost gutters and 
a shingle or two.  Fences are pretty much all gone.

Water was HIGH.  In many areas it went from the sea to lagoon, and in even the 
high-elevations properties the sea went back a good 200-300 feet.   

Hard to tell if there was true erosion or not - plants that used to form 
boarders to beaches are gone but there seems to be a lot of new sand in place 
as well.

Road is in excellent condition EXCEPT for the area behind Las Terazzas.  

No loss of life.

I understand that Belize City and Ladyville are a mess.

International flights may have already resumed, but for sure they are flying 
tomorrow.

I don’t have much more info at this time.  Have lots of photos that will 
download later and share.   Landscape workers will have full employment for 
some weeks to come.

Will send this now to take advantage of internet.

We are all sleepy and a bit in awe of what water can do.

Beaches along Ambergris Caye's eastern shore are experiencing solid swells of 
high water.  
The reef is roaring!

Hi Friends ……

Earl is on his way to Belize.   Everybody who is involved with planning and 
safety has been hard at work for a couple of days.  At this point we re as 
ready as we’ll ever be.

Overview of a bunch of aspects …….

Anticipated landfall of eye seems to be on mainland, slightly north of Gales 
Point Manatee, between the northern and southern lagoon.  This puts it south of 
Belize City.  Unfortunately this means the build of of water coming into the 
city will be 3-5 feet, and since Belize City is at sea level this is a serious 
issue.  There have been massive and lovely city infrastructure projects over 
the past two or three years, and we hope that some of them will ameliorate the 
flooding issue.  Nonetheless, the city has a lot of poor people and low swampy 
areas so we do anticipate misery for those who can least afford it.

Looks like it will pass through Half-moon Caye National Monument way out in the 
sea as it approaches the land.

Shelters have been opened nationwide.

Some rain bands have hit, reminding us of what lies in store later today.

The strongest part of the storm will be with us at night.  This is clearly not 
a welcome thing.

Out on Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye the Emergency Operating Committees have 
been activated since Monday and are doing a great job of organizing and 
preparing.  Volunteers will be manning the Emergency Operations Center round 
the clock.  People have offered safe and comfortable places for volunteers to 
sleep between shifts and hot meals will be provided.   

Banks are closed.  Town Board is closed.  Shops are mostly closed.

Earlier the Bureau of Standards was out ensuring that there will be no 
price-gouging on plywood and other necessary items.

Last international flight left at 11:45 today.

Local airlines ceased operations at mid-day.

Ambergris Caye’s “Coastal Express” water taxi will have its last run north at 
2:30 and last run south at 3:15.  Amazing that they will stay in service this 
long and people are very grateful!

Most boats have been pulled out of water or tied in mangroves.

Ocean Ferry and San Pedro-Belize Express (water taxi service from mainland to 
the cayes) are still doing voluntary evacuation runs, but will cease shortly.  

Earl is expected to be a Cat One (maybe 2) at landfall.  Winds will diminish 
quickly over land, but the rains will continue to be massive in effect as the 
system crosses the Yucatan.  Water from rains,  coming down from in the 
mountains will produce flash floods that will imperil lives of people and 
livestock.   All people in low-lying areas have been advised to seek higher 
ground.

The general public has been asked to stay home/indoors after 4 pm and until the 
storm is gone.

LoveFM is now in emergency broadcast mode serving the entire nation.

Wish us luck.  We’ve been through this before so we are very wary, but not 
particularly frightened.
