- April Showers = May Flowers

Good Morning,  Culebra had a good rainfall amount of 3.1 inches of rain in April.  We did not get the big rains that some of our neighboring islands did, but what we got really soaked in to keep the island green and blooming.  The rainfall chart below shows average rainfall so far this year.  I also attach photos of the Memoza and Cirus blooms this morning.
Enjoy,  William

Good Morning & Happy April,

The chart attached shows that Culebra had 1.7 inches of rain in March.  This is right at average for us.  However most of it came in squally type rain, with some heavy gust, and to us it has remained unseasonably cool.  Perhaps the ones that keep temperature records can verify this cool trend this year.

I also attach a recent underwater photo of some coral & fish.  Without the solar heating, the sea temp is getting cooler also, a bit of a chill when first entering.

Enjoy,  William

Good Morning,

Our extra day in February gave us 0.9 inches of rain to make the months total of 3.1 inches.  This is double our February average, as seen on the chart attached.  A really good soaker and the island was happy for it.

I also attach one of my favorite photos taken this month,
Enjoy,  William

Good Morning,

This being a leap year, February has 29 days,  enjoy the extra day.

Attached is  January's rainfall data. Culeba's rainfall is again on the lower side of our average at 0.9 inches. We know that this was a variable amount on the island this past month, as we saw heavier rains falling to the NW of this location.

Also attached is a photo of the old and new pirate vessels in Culebra's Bay yesterday.

And last is a sea level photo of sunrise reflected in the clouds.

- Clear, Starry Skies in Culebra
  • By William Kunke <wkunke787 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Sun, 10 Jan 2016 07:00:25 -0400
Good Morning,

Last night after a good, slow rainfall of 0.40 inches, the skies cleared and the temperatures dropped to 68 degrees.  The clear sky allowed great viewing of the Southern Cross (two views), and  the grouping of planets Venus (very bright), Saturn (next to Venus), and Mars (the reddish spot to the right).

These photos were taken with a 15 second timed exposure using a tripod.

Enjoy,  William

Good Morning,

A Happy and Safe New Year to all the islands and our friends.

Attached is the rainfall totals for Culebra, PR: Year 2015.
We received a total of 26.4 inches, which is about 1/2 of our yearly average.  The island has recovered from the drought months, with 3.8 inches of rain for December, which is slightly above our December average.

Good Morning & Happy Boxing Day,

Last night Culebra enjoyed the big/bright full Moon.  I took this photo just as it was rising on the horizon.  Also,at the same time the International Space Station made a passage over Culebra, leaving a very bright image trail (15 second timed exposure).

We look forward to the BPL footie games to resume today.
Merry Christmas To All,  William

- Culebra Rain
  • By William Kunke <wkunke787 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Wed, 2 Dec 2015 06:48:55 -0400

Good Morning,

Culebra received 2.1 inches  of rain last night.  I attach a photo of the rain gauge to confirm the amount.  This was on top of recent heavy rains, so it was mostly run-off last night with the dry creek bed roaring all night.

I also attach a link to Astronomy Photo Of The Day showing sunset in CA with a green flash.

Enjoy,  William

Happy December,  Rabbit, Rabbit.

November's rainfall of 7 inches brought Culebra's yearly total up to 22.6 inches.  We had a good amount of rain after Thanksgiving that really brought the island back to life after a significant drought period.  The last time Culebra had a yearly rainfall total in the 20's was in 2000, usually we are in the 30-40 inch range.

Yesterday to end the month we had a rainbow associated with a cumulus cloud come into the bay, right up to our front porch.  A good sign.

Enjoy the Season,  William

- Culebra Showers

Good Morning,  Culebra is receiving almost daily showers and after that long drought it is really soaking it up.  After this morning's shower (mosquito food) we had this great rainbow out our back door.  Any outdoor activity requires the od-de-off routine before hand.

I will also attach a video of some reef fish I visited on yesterday's swim.

Enjoy,  William

- Culebra Rainfall
  • By William Kunke <wkunke787 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Sun, 8 Nov 2015 07:44:26 -0400
Good Morning,

Culebra received 3 1/2 inches of rain yesterday.  This will certainly boost our yearly total more in the right direction.  It was mostly a good soaker rain, with some run-off in the late afternoon.

This morning this squall line was blocking the sunrise and portends a bit more rain for the area.  The flowers have already responded to the increase in moisture and we like seeing this in the morning.

Enjoy,  William

- Culebra : October Rainfall Data

Good Morning,

Below is the photo of today's sunrise, the start of a new month.  After a night of rain, thunder and lightning, you can see some clearing (a patch of blue) and remnants of the rainy clouds.  With nearly a half-inch of rain (0.4) rain last night it sure helped to soak in and give us some drought relief.  As the chart below shows we are far behind our averages, and struggling with only 15.8 inches of rain this year to date.   It looks like we are gradually getting back into our more common weather patterns.

I also attach a photo showing a sea-level view of some cloud formations a few days ago.

Enjoy,  William

- Culebra; Finally Rain!
  • By William Kunke <wkunke787 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Sun, 25 Oct 2015 07:19:04 -0400
Good Morning,

After many weeks of no rain, with hot/humid days, the clouds rolled in yesterday afternoon laden with rain.  Culebra received 0.60 inches during the night, with lots of lightning ativity, both bolt and sheet type.

The photos below show the dryness in the hills with PR showing in the background:  The second shows a thunderhead cloud moving across the mouth of the harbor with squalls showing underneath.

Culebra enjoyed cool nighttime air for a change last night.  No need for the ceiling fans, I don't think they have been turned off for over two weeks or so.  Perhaps this signals a change in weather patterns?

Enjoy,  William

Good Morning,

Please find attached the rainfall data for this year in Culebra.  September gave us only 1 inch of rain early in the month, and the second half of the month was dry & hot.  Our drought continues with 6.5 inches being the normal average for September.  We are far below our yearly amounts with only 13.8 inches thus far.

I also attach this morning's sunrise photo, with St Thomas visible in the distance:  A couple of Scrawl fish I observed snorkeling recently:  A flowering yuca plant, with the Moon still visible in the morning sky.

Enjoy,  William

- Culebra, PR Rainfall Data
  • By William Kunke <wkunke787 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Tue, 1 Sep 2015 06:44:52 -0400
Good Morning,  For the month of August Culebra received only 1.6 inches of rain.  As the attached chart shows, our average amount is 4.1 inches.  This brings our yearly total to just 12.8 inches.  This monthly amount is our lowest since 1993 for a comparable.  In 1993 we received copious amounts of rain in September & November to make-up for the yearly total.

Snorkeling was a bit murky yesterday since Erika stirred-up the seas with her winds.  There seemed to be an unusual amount of Parrot Fish and no Jellyfish.  The attached photo shows two Parrot Fish amoungst the coral.

Enjoy,  William

- Erika Report
  • By William Kunke <wkunke787 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Fri, 28 Aug 2015 10:09:29 -0400
Good Morning,  Culebra had tropical storm winds of 40 MPH for about 8 hours last night into this morning.  Some are saying we had gust up to 50 MPH, especially in the higher elevations.  Electric was off all night and we are just getting hooked back into the internet.  Only 1/10 inch of rain and most of us are wishing for more rain, but thankful that the winds were no worse than what we experienced.  Overall Culebra fared very well.  They keep predicting a NW turn, but it continues to go west, so be prepared for anything.

I attach some photos of turtles chasing and eating jelly fish.  I took these last week prior to "Danny" and look forward to some calmer weather to get back in the water again.

Enjoy, William

- "Danny" Report
  • By William Kunke <wkunke787 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Tue, 25 Aug 2015 13:10:40 -0400
Culebra received 0.4 inches of rain and some 25-30 mph gust, and lots of lightning with "Danny's" passage during the night.  When the outer bands first appeared in the late evening on Monday, this thunderhead cloud was developing as the sun set and you can just see a small section of rainbow in the upper cloud area.  (photo attached)

Overall a pleasant passage of "Danny", and now we look forward to "Erika" possibly providing Culebra with some more rain.

Enjoy,  William

Good Morning,  Below is the rainfall data for Culebra, PR for the first 6 months of the year, compared to other years of collection data.

Another shortfall of rainfall for Culebra this month.  We did have some spectacular winds last week and a tremendous lightning show last night, but overall not much moisture.  Only 10.9 inches of rain for the first half of the year.

I attach some underwater photos taken this month.  Our island beauty is both above and below, Enjoy,  William

Only 0.8 inches of rain in May.  We had small showers at the beginning and end of the month, nothing in the middle.  As a result Culebra is far below average for this time of year.  Culebra has also received an influx of Sarragosa Seaweed once again, very unpleasant as it builds-up in the bay area.

Below are some photos of turtles as we snorkeled yesterday.
Enjoy,  William

April rainfall in Culebra was below average and the island "browned-out" quickly.

I have attached some underwater photos to enjoy, plenty to "sea" out there.
