Only got Internet and Digicel cell back yesterday. There's still a few thousand without power and the Island looks a mess (but being improved daily). Not sure if I can add anything to what's already posted.

Everyone's safe, Hamilton was business-as-usual from Monday. The basic infrastructure of the island as we know is strong, and most people are sensible. Many properties with tarps up now, but nothing compared to Fabian. Fay actually helped by reminding people to prepare, removing weak foliage/trees, and churning up the ocean to cool it a little. Two hours calm respite from the winds as the eye went over the whole island was quite eerie and very helpful.

Bermuda's well back to normal, although a few months from being back to being pristine. If you can't contact any individual from overseas that you need to - let me know.

Good day everyone
Things are progressing with clean up and power restoration. There has been lost of ariel photos lately. This one peaked my interest as we can see the sand has not settled yet along the north shore as our waters are not clear right now. This was the proof

This morning before 7 am the sanitation truck was collecting refuse and inadvertently got caught in a low power line. The truck flipped and power went out in the area again. The fire and rescue service had to come and assist with righting the truck. I think no one was hurt but not sure.
I haven't had a chance to look online at news. www.royalgazette.com or www.bernews.bm

I had my dad come and help me rescue my roses this morning as one had been blown sideways and roots ripped :(. We managed to right it and cut  it back hard added more soil and fertilizer.  We cut them all back hard. Hopefully in a few weeks they will be  beautiful again.

Have a good Wednesday !! Oh I am still without power as is my dad :(...

So I am one of the Fay 1500 ..those persons who lost power during the first storm and are still out now :(.. but its ok I have good friends and am safely at my dad's house which also has no power but we can sleep with windows open and bought new batteries for the fans. He also has a generator which works very well still. It cost S50 (US) to fill up the tank which lasts for a couple of days.. more now that everyone is out to work. All the school reopened today except two preschool where they have been unable to  restore power.
So altogether including the Famous Fay 1500 there are still about 6000 home without power.  We are so spoiled here with inside plumbing and electrical power to all our homes that for some this is a crisis. I just think about my other Caribbean island friends where some  have to go to  a stand pipe for water " their normal" and say in time it will be my "normal"  again.
Today is beautiful sunny and clear.
Have a great day!!

- Cleaning up after Gonzalo

Hello everyone
I am mentally exhausted.
My house still has not electricity and finally we found the live electrical cable that is broken. My landlord is busy with chain saw cutting through what was easily 17ft  high trees and debris.  Don't worry he is safe .. The cable is above but took us a while for see it.

My dads house also has no electricity yet where we rode out the storm. He bought a generator when Fabian hit us nad it being doing a great job powering up electronics and letting us have water for flushing and freezing cold showers :)

There are still over 10,000 persons without electricity and the Carilec Crew arrives today.

Government schools are closed today but I have a feeling they will be opening up tomorrow. Private school went in today.

Nearly every truck you see on the road is piled high with plant debris. All the services hare working hard to get Bermuda back to normal.
www.bernews.com  is an excellent site for photos and updates too just in case i can't get on much.

I will be leaving works shortly .. i run a government preschool to collect my daughter from school and then head home to my  house to empty out the contents of my fridge that has been off for 9 days . I got rid of some stuff but whats left needs to go., trash pick up is tomorrow.  The lines to take the trash ot the dump yourself are 20 cars long.

Its beautiful and sunny here today. The sea has not settled yet as our usual clear turquiose water are still looking creamy ( the sand is mixed in)
I haven't been to see the beach damage yet. Perhaps  I will get to that soon.
Enjoy your afternoon

I was just smiling reading  the posts on this website for the first time. Thanks again. Just wanted to let you now the gas cylinders nver budged!! My daddy rocks !! He secured the outside air condition units too. He has currently cleared the yard of debris and made a rain shelter for the outside generator just in case :). He is my hero !! We have access to power to recharge all these communication devices,  get cold but welcome showers and keep food cold / frozen. In my travels around the garden this morning.. I noted a small pawpaw tree that was perfectly exposed to all the wind both time.. yet is has come out unscathed. It could only be the hand of God! I have attached the picture I took this morning. Everything else is brown and or wind burned.
God is awesome!!

Good Morning  Caribbean Family
We have come out scathed but not broken. No loss of life . As Susan says there is tons of shrubbery damage and local crops lost. Many roofs were lost but the spirit of the people is strong. Everyone is helping the next one to clean up. Truckers are busy carting debris.
My house was not damaged but we still have no power. What was left of the avocado loquat and banana trees is no destroyed and more mess to try and clear up. The wires that were loose last time are now broken.  I am hopeful to have power back within the week. Will let you know who long it takes. I am on day 9 from  the last one :).
The rain was forced under my front door so I had water from the front door into the kitchen... about 25 ft long puddles. Otherwise inside was fine. SO we are blessed., Thanks to everyone who sent personal messages of support and advice they were very much appreciated .
I made some new friends at the NHC  too. Was great talking to you all
Have a wonderful Sunday

There are no reported storm related deaths. However, there was a road fatality this afternoon which has us all upset.

There are spots of significant roof damage.  Lots of tree/ horticultural damage.  Our new hospital suffered some damage but nothing horrendous.

basically, the island is a mess.  BUT!  give us two weeks and it will return to paradise.

and for laughs, my good friends at www.bermemes.com

more later.

Power co reports 22,000 without power. That is out of 36,000 total customers.
Conditions very bad and the eye is about an hour off. Some reports of the roof
being damaged at cedarbridge academy which is being used as a shelter. No way
to know if that is true though. We have a few towels out at window areas but
we are fine.

Well, the power is gone... Winds are cranked up. I can feel the pressure
dropping in my ears. Eating cheetos. Listening to the chickens clucking is
kinda peaceful.

Worst of it expected later this evening.
Ty to everyone who has emailed me with advice, funny stories and well wishes.
We are fine so far.

Lights are out. Looks like night fall already in our safe room as the blinds are down. The dogs are all lying on floor or couch near us. My daughter is reading on her kindle. My family are busy sorting out LED  lights and flashlights.
Wind is gusty outside. We have battery operated fans  and the gas stove for camping is connected. Hot food at the Dyers house :).
Still smiling for now

Before gonzalo we had 1500 people still without power from TS Fay. Now we have
reports of 2200 people without power and growing. A gust of 58mph was just
recorded. So things are ramping up. So far so good here.

Well good morning. Still smiling for now.  I have  headache that woke me up in the night.. probably related to the pressure changes as the hurricane approaches. So  as it was still calm this morning I took a drive back to my house to pick up sinus meds. The winds are still relatively light inland. I took a few pictures.
My dad is a Mr Fixit. He has secured my sisters  gas cylinders so they shouldn't be blown away. The sun picture is take from his backyard.. its just kind of twilighty here. The other picture is Flatts inlet around 830 this morning .. my peaceful place.
Had a few extra smiles this morning. My son sent a message for my pancake recipe. Made me smile what's a hurricane party without mom's pancakes. He is 20 . His is camped by his dad with his large dog. We have the smaller dog with us at my dad's.

Just finished a bag of peanut mm's meant for sharing all by myself. LOL oops. Sinus headache is back .. I guess it will be like that for a while. Taking more meds.
There is lots of live coverage on the Weather Channel on cable TV as well.
Its still pretty calm for now. Will post a bit later if I can. Everything is still plugged in so when power goes out if the internet companies stay up  we should be able to post.

6am update. A lovely morning with relatively gentle SW winds, although the roar of South Shore waves from the swell is clearly audible. I won't be going beach-front to check that out.

Gustavo has slowed a little since last night's forecast, and currently looks less impressive on satellite with a somewhat ragged eye-wall. Looks like any concerns won't start until the afternoon, with cpa 8pm.

Thurs 23:30 update from just inland from South Shore in Paget/Warwick boundary, Bermuda.

The peak of Gonzalo seem now to be about 3 or 4pm Fri, so not annoying Bermuda yet. We're guessing winds will gradually build overnight, hopefully a decent night's sleep with ac and fans. By about 7 or 9 am that will change.

More in the am. People seem to be very well prepared. But there's always the many newbies who weren't here for the last serious storm, Fabian in 2003,

FINISH THOSE PREPARATIONS Bermuda. NOW

So we have done everything we can. Supplies in the house, checked on my elderly neighbors, car is full of gas, the house is secured. I said a prayer over my own home and locked the door. I took pictures of what it looked outside as it will look different tomorrow. Hopefully no major structural damage and just more  vegetation to clear.
My youngest daughter learned the science of dipping water from the tank with a bucket. In Bermuda we all have tanks under our house to supply water to the house. We had a five gallon bucket with a rope attached  to drop into the tank. Its not as easy as it sounds as the tank has two sides and  pipe for the water to be pulled up through. After several attempts to of only getting a couple of inches in  the bucket she figured out how to make it swing further in and filled it up She was so proud of herself. We were using the water for flushing and washing dishes.
The first picture was of the north shore early this afternoon. Its still calm now. The second was the sunset this evening  at Flatt's  Inlet and the  third is John Smith's bay just before sunset.
The crickets and tree frogs are still singing tonight.Everything sounds normal. I wish it was.
Will post in the morning.

We totally board up. Cut the power. Packed all essentials.... And evacuated to
our friends house. They have basement apartment we will be hiding in. It
feels much safer than our house. The kids are playing quietly on their iPads.
the cats have been scarce and the chickens are still outside.

The fish tank got cleaned and another toilet scrubbed. While filling the back
bathroom tub with emergency flushing water I discovered some things. Namely, a
rotting apple, a rotting Baggie of grapes, a half eaten peanut butter and jelly
sandwich and a dirty napkin. My daughter had been using this place as a hidey
hole for undesirable food. Who does that? I was so grossed out. I called her
in to the bathroom... Using all three of her names. She presented herself,
stared at the floor hard... When I asked her why she hid food to rot in the
back bathroom like a feral animal she whimpered, "I didn't want the fruit". I
made her clean it up. .... Kids... They are so gross!

It's calm outside... Nothing to report yet. ...... Yet.

Good afternoon
Bermuda business are officially closed. Everyone is in last minute preparations. I did what I could at my house and have now moved into my dads place where we will ride out the storm. The north side of the island is still very calm. The south shore is showing some beautiful blue seas.
My patience level is down sorry I will try to add the pictures a little later this evening.
The sounds outside are of people banging up plywood and my dad trying to get the generator to work. It's very loud so its working. Before that noise started it was eerily quiet ony a few birds chirping. I wonder if the tree frogs and  crickets will sing this evening.
I will get my lap top online at my dads and send pics in a little while.
My step mom is real organizer we have the snack basket and the assorted crackers tray all ready. In addition there is special spot for the water bottle with the pump. We have bought some games and I know they have phase 10 here. We are ready!!

I just cleaned a toilet. Then the phone rang. It was Jason. We are riding
the storm out at his house. He said we can arrive whenever we are ready. He
is doing night duty at the aquarium where he works. Our flamingos are sneaky
fellas and need babysitting. He won't be home until midnight but his wife PB
will be there. He mentioned PB will be making a dump run ... And buying a
pump. I asked what the pump was for... He said it was to help him get rid of
the "slurry" that has accumulated at the bottom of the stairs. ..... I
inquired as to the source of the slurry. ... He changed the subject. I asked
again... He deflected. So, now you can add a slurry to the children, cats,
nervous husband and howling winds. Further, Jason and his wife (have I
mentioned how much I adore them?) keep chickens. There was a brief mention of
bringing the chickens inside. This I completely tuned out and repressed to the
deepest quadrant of my already dwindling soul.

It is windy. That's is all.

Woke up at 5:30am in total darkness due to our storm boards being put up last
night. I am laying here thinking of all the things I have to do today... Like
clean the fish tank. I Just read the latest NHC update; the situation hasn't
improved. My daughters school is closed until further notice. Most businesses
will be closing around noon today if not before.

I made brownies last night. If my husband didn't inhale them all as a midnight
snack I will eat one for breakfast. Don't judge me people... This is a
crisis... And my behavior is likely to only get worse from here on out.

When the sun comes up I'll stick my head out and post again.

Storm prep continues.  I think most lumber yards are out of plywood at this point.  To say traffic has been horrendous would be an understatement.  We still have SO MUCH debris from Fay.  I am concerned most of this will become airborne as the winds pick up again.  There has been a partial embodiment of our regiment and I saw them out yesterday trying to clear roads and horticultural debris.

For two days now I have passed a large tree that cracked and fell over exposing a thriving bee hive inside.  The poor bees were clearly pissed and struggling.  Come on mother nature!  Don't bees have enough issues these days?  I tried to get someone to come rescue the hive but all our bee keeping people are swamped.

We have decided not to go to the hotel and to go to a friends house instead.  i love these people... really i do.  But, they have 3 kids... I have 1.  I have trouble keeping up with my 7 year olds constant banter about ponies and other magical things i know nothing about.    They also have cats.... Im allergic to cats.  .... so..... kids, cats, no power, howling winds, a hyperventilating husband (who btw did not sleep a wink last night)  I'd say things are shaping up to be spectacular.  .....

There better be coffee.... thats all im sayin.

Good Morning Fellow Islanders and Friends
I can't find anything in our history to show where we have had two storms in a week. The television news showed that the stores already have lines at the cash register. Good thing I got most stuff on Monday.. I still will probably have to do lines unless I escape now and go while most people are still at work.  People are resigned to what is potentially a very dangerous storm even for our island home of brick houses.

In my lifetime I remember two big storms Emily 27 yrs ago ( my first born and I left the island the day before it hit and so missed that adventure) and Fabian 11 years ago. My son is excited about a big storm.,, he is 20 and has no memory of the  dangers really.. I tease him and call him Grasshopper and say I hope you will feel the same way this weekend.

The streets are still lined with debris from Fay. Some huge trees fell over and most of our crops were destroyed. As we import everything this is not good news. Prices at the grocery store were already high.. $2.99 for a pound of broccoli and our dollar is tied to the US 1:1. My son already had plans ot plant vegetables in our garden. Good thing he waited. I am sure we will plant them later,

Just sitting here doing a final to do list which included charging every entertainment device  we have  at my Dad's today as we still have no power.  What happened to playing cards... and talking to family. I am as guilty as the rest I guess. I have a feeling the noise will make chat difficulut and depending on the height if its arrival we might be asleep or trying to.

The road crews and everyone with a truck are all very busy trying to get the sidewalk and roads cleared prior to Gonzalo in an attempt to reduce missiles.
I'll check in later . I forgot to charge my camera.. . so will try for photos later.

Well we are reallly not happy about this next hurricane. We are still clearing up from Fay. All schools will be open tomorrow.  People are preparing now and the general feeling is one of aprehension. If Gonzalo doesnt lose intensity we are going to get a real battering. Government EMO have already declared it as RED for impact and a direct impact is still the prognosis at this time. They have also declared all schools will be closed the day after the storm. My house doesn't have power yet from Fay. At this rate it doesn't look like I will get it. On a personal note I have only 1large bag of avocados left :-). Will post as I am able. Staying by my dad tonight. The waters haven't settled from Fay. Will try and post pictures tomorrow.

On my way home traffic was at a stand still. Police are manually directing
traffic at all main intersections as work crew clean up fallen limbs and debris
from TS Fay. At last count only a few hundred remain without power from that
storm. Still, they are only likely to lose it again on Friday... For god knows
how long. I picked up some bottled water which I hate to buy but felt I had no
choice. Lots of people were buying ply wood and supplies... So I do feel
people are prepping. Tomorrow after work my husband will board up the condo
with the help of the other people in our complex. Still no word on hotel...
Still on waiting list.

I bought brownie mix... And chips too.

Its been a long time since I posted here.  I don't think I posted at all last year as Bermuda had nothing worth writing about.  But... here we are awaiting Gonzalo.  Last week we got pretty beat up by Tropical Storm Fay (it seemed like a hurricane to me).  I expect serious storm prep will begin tonight/tomorrow.  My condo has a full south shore exposure and is pretty elevated so we will board up.  Im hoping to ride out the bulk of the storm at a local hotel but i am on a waiting list.

Jim Cantore is apparently on his way here.... so bad things can only follow......  (sorry Jim, we love ya .... but..... )

For those of you that are unfamiliar with me and my family ... here is the low down...  my husband cant handle storms... he will be hyperventilating by sundown.  My 7 year old daughter doesnt understand anything that interferes with her wifi.  All I want is coffee and snacks.

I dropped off some garbage at the dump this AM and there was a big line to get in...  hopefully that means people are securing their ish and getting ready!

Will post more later.

I am hoping I have the correct email address for the website. Bermuda had an unexpected kick last night as we were told it's just a tropical storm. It turned out to be closer to cat 1 hurricane..if it didn't become one as it passed over us. The island suffered  major power loss and lots of vegetation damage. There were a few  structures damaged with roofs with holes, traffic light and some walls and awning destroyed. Power is still being restored. School will be closed tomorrow although staff are expected to go in and assess damage. I picked up over25 huge bags of avocados from my fallen tree. each bag hold about 25 avocados... am busy trying to give them away as are a multitude of other person who had them growing in their gardens. The sound of them rolling on the roof sounded like bowling lanes. The airport was closed this morning as the roof had been damaged and there was lots of flooding. The British airways flight is due in any minute and scheduled to leave at 1 am.We really didn't take this one seriously. The season have been very quiet here lately. The best thing there was no loss of life so we are blessed!!
Will be a bit more alert now as Gonzalo threatened to come this was too!!
The season is nearly over.
