- wet cold front
  • From: Diane Campbell <dcampbellbz at gmail.com>

At "sunrise" the skies were socked-in solid gray. Rain. Winds from SE.
About 2 inches of rain in past 24 hours. Before daybreak we had gusty
winds to 39 MPH. Remarkably cool air temperature right now - only 75
F.
Pretty sure the water is a lot warmer than the air. Might be fun to
go for a wake-me-up swim in the rain whist the winds are down and the
rain is soft. Hey, if you're wet you're wet.
Roads on island are a long string of big puddles.
Flood-prone areas on mainland are watching rivers rise, but so far
things are reasonably ok.

The dogs are not happy about the weather - they hate getting their
feet wet and heaven forbid it actually rains on them. They had
fragrant baths and full grooming yesterday so they can come in and
snuggle. The cat, typically, is blase and just wants breakfast.

- next week

Would love a crystal ball to tell us about what to expect next week.
Rob LIghbown at Crown Weather said there is a 70-80% chance of a storm forming
up in our area between 28 Oct and 4 Nov.
FIM Model puts a hurricane on Yucatan/Belize on Nov 6.
Not music to anybody's ears.

Ambergris Caye - Sunny skies with glorious clouds.   Cooler breezes and calm seas.

Prayers and thoughts for safety/recovery go to all those affected in so many areas in Asia .....

Ambergris Caye - 11 October.
Beautiful skies,  with rare illusory double-sunrise this morning (see photos below)
Brief squall around noon, lasting about 4 minutes.  Sun is out.  Temps in the 80's

The reflection of the sun briefly caused the illusion of a double-sunrise this morning --- take a look at the photos below, taken one after the other .......

Reflection begins .....

Blazing second sun.........

Back to one ......

Ambergris Caye -
After a messy-wet day yesterday, we had a spectacular if brief view of the sun at about 5:15 this morning.
Overcast now, but no signs of downpours on the horizon.
Believe it or not, the photo below was not altered or enhanced for this color - the camera really "got it".

Ambergris Caye - rains are significant.
The infrared satellite indicates that our morning deluge is the beginning of
what will probably be an all-day event.

October is generally our wettest month and this year seems no exception.

Ambergris Caye at 5 AM is pictured below ........ I'm writing this 3 hours later as the clouds from a medium-sized blob of weather move in and thunder rumbles in the distance (mostly seeming to emanate from the west over the mainland).
We expect a bit of rain in our area this morning and hope for an afternoon of clear skies.
Temps are lovely.
Due to thunder the slightly wet dogs are hiding under my desk - a fragrant reminder that I forgot their weekend good-smell bubble bath!

On the sandy shores of Ambergris Caye we have soft rain with light breezes
occasionally interrupted by stronger gusts with heavier rains.
Skies are a fairly uniform gray, temps are cool.

My thoughts on 97L - it sits right where our trouble-makers are born.  Written forecasts say no problem for Belize.  Computer models give us a visit by this system tomorrow sometime.
Apparently NOBODY knows........ ergo, when a day starts this beautifully, there is nothing to be done but enjoy it - check your canned goods and have a FABULOUS day.

Monday, last day of September.
Hot, calm, lovely sunrise.
Keeping an eye on that invest down south, and enjoying a really beautiful day !

Paying attention to the blob off coast of Columbia.
That's the birthplace of our trouble-makers.

For today weather here is clear, sunny, warm-not-hot temps, light breeze -
absolute perfection.
Grateful for the day - for the sea - for Mother Nature's gifts in such
abundance.

- Lucky so far!

One big weather-blob after another moves over us and then over Yucatan and then
into Bay of Campeche ...... in the cayes we've been spared any real "storm"
experiences but have had a lot of rain.
My own cistern is overflowing so today I considered it my obligation to take a
very log hot shower to make room for the next rains, proving that there can be
an upside to the deluge!
Mainland areas have a bit of flooding, but nothing dire at this point.

Most tourists-based businesses close in September here - time for a rest, for
repairs to hotels and boats, and time to enjoy the many holiday celebrations of
the month. For that reason few tourists are here and there is not too much
whining about the weather. All good!

Ambergris Caye - Invest 92 was more of a mental exercise in weather watching
than anything else. Some rain, a few rumbles of thunder and the occasional
magical black sky starkly contrasted against a turquoise sea.
Sea state is super-calm, temps are cooler (nice!) and the sound of the surf on
the reef is a faint roar.
Today is a bit wet but still remarkably beautiful.

- still raining
  • From: Diane Campbell <dcampbellbz at gmail.com>

Sun came out and blue skies prevailed yesterday afternoon.
This morning the sun lost out to the rain. Squalls off and on all morning -
lots of sky juice.

Rivers are rising on the mainland in the Cayo District.

- after TD2

The northern cayes of Belize had a lot of rain from TD2, and winds in gusting
around 45 MPH.
Sea level was high, but the waves themselves were not so dramatic.
Some beach erosion, and lots of seagrass/logs/etc on the beaches.
San Pedro Town Council called out a volunteer work party yesterday and as of
this morning the beaches in San Pedro town area are all clean and nice.

Boats from Belize City have resumed their runs and school is open.

Southern Mainland Beize is having flood issues but water is going down pretty
quickly. They got 10" of rain in 24 hours in some areas.
Not sure how many inches of rain we had on Ambergris Caye but my cistern went
up 7" and is nearly full. Feeling pretty smug about the water-storage part.

Today we have gray skies, off and on rain. Thunder this morning. Looks like
the rest of the week will be soggy too.
Lobsterfest appears to be successful despite the weather! If you can't dive,
you can still eat, drink and dance.

Visit us in Belize - you'll be glad you did!

- rain on the way
  • From: Diane Campbell <dcampbellbz at gmail.com>
  • Date: Sun, 16 Jun 2013 12:41:37 -0600
On Ambergris Caye we have gray skies and there is a little rumble of distant
thunder.
Generally breezy with the occasional gusty interlude.

Anticipating heavy rains to move in later in the day.

Gutters cleaned, cistern happy for the top-up.

A good time to reflect on one's storm plans and to see what is done and what
needs doing.

- Rains arrived

Belize is getting much-needed rain. Reports are that on the mainland in
Belmopan, 6 inches fell last night.
Hopefully that downpour will out the brush-fires that have been breaking out
over there.

Out here in the cayes it's been stormy too. San Pedro's weather station
reported almost 2 inches in 24 hours.

I can hear cisterns filling and thirsty plants saying thanks.
