- April Rain Data
  • By William Kunke <wkunke787 at yahoo.com>
  • Date: Tue, 1 May 2012 04:01:41 -0700 (PDT)

Good Morning,

Culebra received 2.3 inches of rain in April.  This amount is right at our average for the month and makes a total of 9.8 inches for the year thus far.

April has been a very pleasant month with some neat sunrises.  Attached are some samples to enjoy,  William

- Caribbean Smokey Mountains
  • By William Kunke <wkunke787 at yahoo.com>
  • Date: Wed, 4 Apr 2012 03:54:18 -0700 (PDT)

Culebra continues to have this blue haze:  Irritating to the eyes, throat, and breathing.  There was some activity on Montserrat the last week of March, but they seem to deny that this influx of haze is from that area.  Any air quality reports out there?  Does this look like the African Serengeti or the Appalachian Smokey Mountains?

Busy Easter week for Culebra,  Enjoy,  William

- Culebra's March Rainfall
  • By William Kunke <wkunke787 at yahoo.com>
  • Date: Sun, 1 Apr 2012 04:15:02 -0700 (PDT)

Good Morning,

Culebra's rainfall for the month of March was 4.0 inches, much higher than our 1.60 average for that month.  In fact, thus far for the year we are almost 2 inches above normal.

The island is blooming and enjoying the bonus moisture.

  • Date: Mon, 26 Mar 2012 03:18:21 -0700 (PDT)
Good Morning,

Culebra received 3/4 inch of rain last night.  The ground really sucked it up, an early spring gift.

If you have cleaned your house/screens and gotten a cleaning cloth covered with black, Montserrat is the culprit.  I attach a photo from their website, http://www.mvo.ms/ showing recent activity of ash spewing into the air.  The local news has no coverage of these events and we are breathing this every day, ugh!

I also attach a photo showing Culebra's eastern most bay early yesterday morning.  It is light enough for a walk at 6 AM these days and we like that.  Now the Brits have changed their clocks and messed with out footie schedule on TV!

Enjoy,  William

- Long rain
  • By MJ <caribemj at gmail.com>
  • Date: Thu, 22 Mar 2012 16:01:03 -0400
After a dry spell that allowed about six fires in various spots around the island, we're finally getting a drenching rain, one of those that starts hard and then just keeps on going. As predicted, which isn't always or even often the case on Culebra.

I know it is dousing the plans of a lot of visitors, but for those worried about fires (and cisterns and plants), it's a really good thing. If it's raining on your parade, grab an umbrella and start marching anyway!

  • By MJ <caribemj at gmail.com>
  • Date: Mon, 23 Jan 2012 07:19:20 -0400
After a good couple of weeks of absolutely gorgeous winter weather (crisp air, deeply blue skies, water like it was touched up with photoshop bling spots), we had a dramatic looking and very welcome rain sweep in. Welcome because we're entering into the F word season and all that helps avoid that is welcome. Rain, some yard work to cut back grasses as a break zone around homes, vigilance in watching for anything resembling smoke...that sort of thing is how to get through the dry months, hopefully all safe and sound. So, c'mon rain!

  • By William Kunke <wkunke787 at yahoo.com>
  • Date: Wed, 18 Jan 2012 03:06:19 -0800 (PST)
Good Morning,

69 degrees, windy & wet morning.  0.30 inches of rainfall last night and gusty winds, we are having a real winter this year compared to last year.

Hey St Thomas:  Is this what you saw in the sky the other day?

When the sun broke through yesterday I went for a swim/snorkel.  Water is cool at first, but with some brisk swimming it seems just about right.  The usual guys (fish) were there to say Hi to.  I took this "snorkel-eye-view" of an anchored sailboat.

Good Morning,

I agree with St Martin's comment about the weather being "gorgeous"!  The mornings are crisp (68-70 degrees) and clear.  This has allowed us a great view of the International Space Station passing overhead for the past few mornings.  I got some timed exposures of it's transit this AM at 6:08.

If you are interested in what is passing your area overhead, go to this site and type in your zip code:

Good Morning & Happy New Year,

I have attached a chart showing the previous 24 years of collection data here in Culebra.  Comparing to this year's rainfall, we fall just short of the average annual rainfall.  The 44.4 inches recorded this year is exactly the same as we had in 2008.  I have more records available at this website:

  • By MJ <caribemj at gmail.com>
  • Date: Fri, 9 Dec 2011 08:52:49 -0400
Under the first really grey sky morning we've had in ages (it seems), spits of showers come. First in the usual 'weather window' side, then right around from the usually never needs to be closed window side. It's cool and breezy and watering the plants rather than drowning them. Other than this, the weather has been unbelievably gorgeous, postcard Caribbean. The pelicans have been going crazy this morning fishing. When I went outside to take a photo of them, I saw that they weren't the only ones.

Sunrise at 6:45 today. We like our sunrises earlier, but they are still beautiful at this time too!  See attached photo.  We also caught the Moon & Jupiter conjunction on the night of the 6th, while they moved in & out of the clouds.

November rain for Culebra totaled 4.6 inches.  It is below our average amount for November.  This brings our year's total to 42.8 inches.  So even though our monthly amounts have been all over the place, the yearly total will be just about average.

  • Date: Fri, 4 Nov 2011 06:59:11 -0700 (PDT)

Good Morning,   The Brits have a saying of "bits & bobs". Well that is how the rainfall seemed to me the past day and half. Drizzles, showers, & drips; we accumulated 1.20 inches of rain.

It remains overcast, but very comfortable temp-wise, with a slight breeze kicking up to dry things out a bit. We had been getting some browning in the hills last month, but now everything is picking up green again.

We are having some rain around here...a few hard showers, but so far, that slow, cistern filling, plant encouraging kind of rain that makes for easy weed pulling and cooler (much cooler) weather. For beach goers and outdoor business, not so good but as ever, it won't last, so hang in there! I'll confess to enjoying it!

- Hazy with chance of Flowers
  • By William Kunke <wkunke787 at yahoo.com>
  • Date: Fri, 14 Oct 2011 05:28:16 -0700 (PDT)
Good Morning,

Culebra has experienced the same haze that St Kitts is reporting.  The Sahara Dust maps show no concentration here and Montserrat is not reporting any ash plumes.  Perhaps the dust maps are delayed in posting?  It is an eye irritant and breathing problem for some.

Culebra did have some brief showers (0.20 inches) yesterday which the flowers enjoyed.

Ophelia, one of the weirdest storms ever, finally decided to follow its pre-determined path, but not before putting a hurting on Dominica et al. Thankfully, no fatalities, from what I've heard so far. Hopefully Bermuda will be spared anything damaging.

We're in-between glorious blue skies and glaring white, (and a barely there rain just starting to fall as I type) with the mid-day heat factor enough to stun a horse. But right now, it's still cool and lovely. And since I'm baking bread today, I'm thankful.

Hopefully we won't go farther in the alphabet, but the fat lady hasn't sung yet.

We've been getting a lot of rain, in between sunny moments, creating that unique heated air that can send you to your knees begging for mercy, or at least a cooling, shaded breeze. The linked loop below looks really weird right now, falling weather...

Last night we saw this shrimp (there were a few) in the road, washing across in rain water draining from the hills. That was right after moving a turtle to the bush from the middle of the road (no pic, drat).

Nine plus years here and two news sightings in one moment. Nice!

Last night's storm - without being something named - was probably the
longest, loudest and most wild of any in the time I can remember
living in the Caribbean. Even when we've gotten 22 inches of rain in
two days, it was nothing like we experienced last night. Shockingly,
the electric only went out twice and is on now, along with phone
service. I shouldn't have written that, probably...

Hope everyone made it through with no transformers blowing up. Around
here, the only shaking was my normally tranquil in storms cat...

It's raining gently right now, but according to the radar, there's
heavier weather coming.

You know how when a storm is named we all think of someone we know with that particular name; their personality and characteristics. We think them fiery or calm, gentle or rambunctious. And though we all know better, it's hard not to have that in the back of our minds when that storm comes heading our way. Truthfully, most of the Maria's I know fall into the fiery catagory - not a bad thing, but for a storm? Not so good.

This Maria, however, was kind to us. A few gusts, some rain that carried on until yesterday but here on Culebra, not so bad. Knockin' on wood for whatever is up next, and thinking of those who have not been treated so kindly thus far this season.

Today we are in the sunny, blue(ish) skies, hot and sultry zone, with some distant thunder for background audio. So far.

An afternoon of Maria -

- Curlebra Rainfall Data
  • By William Kunke <wkunke787 at yahoo.com>
  • Date: Thu, 1 Sep 2011 04:25:07 -0700 (PDT)

Good Morning,

Happy September!  We will be on hurricane watch most of this month.  Like all of you we hope "Katia" will continue on it's forecast path north of the islands.

Culebra received 9.5 inches of rain in August.  It can be broken down to two events;  TS Emily = 1.5 and Hurricane Irene=7.0.  Our average rainfall for August is 4.1 inches.  Culebra's total for 2011 thus far is 31 inches of rain.

We had another wonderful sunrise this AM to enjoy while hiking in the yard enjoying the flowers and doing battle with the mosquitoes!

  • By William Kunke <wkunke787 at yahoo.com>
  • Date: Wed, 31 Aug 2011 04:09:04 -0700 (PDT)
Good Morning,

Hurricane "Irene" sat over Culebra on August 21st with 60-70 mph winds, 6.2 inches of rain and churned here for 7hours during the night.  It left us with no electric for 4 days and no telephone/internet for 10 days.  So, now we are back and watching "Katia" come across the Atlantic.

The rains of "Irene" have left us with blooming flowers, growing grass, and mosquitoes.  We had a lovely sunrise this AM to enjoy the new flowers with.  As I post this, we are receiving some showers with the sun shinning - more mosquito food

We are singing the refrain, Move above 15!  Usually if these storms in the Atlantic get above 15 degrees latitude, they will pass well north of the islands.  Keep watch and be prepared!

Enjoy,  William

Yesterday, looking at three sat and radar views and loops and comparing them with a friend doing the same, we still couldn't figure out when the rain would come, if it would come or which direction it would come from. Of course, it didn't come at all. Here at least. But it sure was busy around us!

Today the rain came, fairly lightly but for quite a few hours. We're in a pause for now, maybe for awhile. Who knows?

It is so green it almost hurts my eyes. Almost. We did have a really sweet sunset last night, the kind that makes color everywhere, not just at the western edges of the world.

Maybe if I pretend I don't have laundry to do, it will not rain tomorrow?

While today looks sunny and bright, the last two days we had numerous squalls blow through...which I always kind of like if I'm in the right place (like not slamming the cart closed while getting rain blasted). The other day I was at Dinghy Dock, an excellent place to sit out a squall, watching the rain white out the bay while the birds go crazy.

This pelican took advantage of the fresh water as a thirst quencher (I'd never seen this before, it was pretty awesome, as he opened his beak to the rain over and over again)

From the radar last night, and even this morning, it looked like we were in for another full day of rain. Instead, the wind switched and so did the system, dipping below us in a westward move and then north! So while it has been a grey day, it's nothing like St. Croix got, which was flooding so bad they sent all the children home from school mid-day. Hope you all dry out sooner than later, Crucians!

- It's that time again, boys and girls!

Wasn't it just June 1st a few months ago? I know they say time goes faster as one ages, but at this rate, I'll be cross-eyed flipping the calendar before I hit 60 (and that's not so far away; it's going pretty fast now).

We seem to be off to a running start, but not a crazy one, with a couple of disturbances hanging around. Hoping the CSU forecast is a dud and we have a safe and sound season with harm to none. Of course I'm going to be optimistic! I can't do anything about the weather but be PREPARED! And I hope you are!

It's hot. It's humid. Just breathing can be sweat making. And I'm going to use my new stolen saying a lot this summer. 'I'm not complainin', just explainin;.'

- Days of bees and other buzzers
  • By MJ <caribemj at gmail.com>

With so much welcomed rain, we're now doing everything possible to ward off the newly hatched mozzies, who are making up for the lost time and seem to be drawn to me like, well, like bees to genipa blossoms!

Bare branches are now loaded with leaves, creating shade again in my yard. Blooms of everything, everywhere you look. It's almost like a magic trick, and hard to believe that the sun was blaring down in these shady spaces only days ago.

My heart goes out to those in the states that have been under a seeming curse of horrifyingly destructive weather. I know weather is only weather and not evil or good, but it seems almost too much, and yet keeps continuing.  Knowing it will be years in the rebuilding of physical and emotional lives, from Japan to Alabama, is really beyond my comprehension. Bless those who are helping in that task, by financial means or pure grit.

- Sorry, tourists!

Days of rain, with one brilliant blue-skied, sunshine filled day in between, is not exactly the stuff of visitors dreams. The drought-breaking rain continues to fall, but luckily, not in proportions requiring us to have floodgates...though I might have to carry a cell phone when walking in the yard, just in case I get stuck in the mud and need help.

The roof leaks will be fixed, the mud will dry up. The island is green again (especially that noxious weed I hate that has taken over everywhere) and blooms are everywhere. I believe the sun will be out again sometime. Really.

- Good for some, not for others

While we awaited any rain at all, and finally got some, over on the big island of Puerto Rico, there was flooding, HAIL, and a waterspout that may have put some boats on the reef. That's word of mouth, so I don't know the details, if any. Here on Culebra, the ground has some 'squish' to it that every little bit of anything growing is responding to in a major way.

- Rain and stillness
  • By MJ <caribemj at gmail.com>
  • Date: Thu, 12 May 2011 20:24:10 -0400
Grey clouds hung over us all day. Layers of varying shades, but the whole sky a bowl of grey. With heat trapped, and no wind it was like the earth was aching for rain. Finally we got some, not much, but at the perfect time, afternoon. Enough to clear out the deep humidity, to leave the air cool and fresh. Just the tiny amounts we've gotten lately have begun to green up our dreary brown hills and trees that looked dead are coming to life again.

It is still again, but cooled off, not feeling a bit like almost mid-May. Nice sleeping weather!

Rain...powerful stuff.

- Stillness

From seemingly never ending Christmas winds, the last two days have been incredibly still. Right now I can see the perfect reflection of a mast light at least a mile away from my yard. Every bird note sounds like it is on a speaker...and still no rain.

- Hurricane Climatology

Good Morning,

Thanks to Gert for the work done to create all the graphs to show the timing, strength, and names of storms affecting each of our islands.  A lot of work, and much appreciated.  Here is the link for the storms affecting Culebra:
http://www.stormcarib.com/climatology/TJCL_all_isl.htm

I attach a few photos showing different of aspects of our island this month.  It is still dry on Culebra, even though the green and flowers are coming out for spring.

Enjoy,  William

- Culebra Rainfall
  • By William Kunke <wkunke787 at yahoo.com>
  • Date: Sun, 1 May 2011 04:16:26 -0700 (PDT)

Good Morning,

Happy May to all you island people.  Culebra's April rainfall was 1.90 inches at this location, making a year total of 3.20 inches thus far in 2011.  I make a point of saying at "this location", as I know that more rain fell on the North side of the island this past month.  Even our small island has micro climates.

We were blessed with this nice rainbow at sunrise today,  Enjoy,  William

- Rain!!!
  • By MJ <caribemj at gmail.com>

We've gotten a tiny bit of rain this morning, hooray! I've lost quite a few plants and trees to this drought/dry season...some things just can't seem to get enough water. Hopefully we're in a turnaround time here (of course, I say that knowing we could get a 20 inch flooder...and then I'll feel guilty).

It's Semana Santa here, boats from the big island are rafted up everywhere, and the night is full of music and parties. Campers are in high gear on most beaches, a local tradition here - and anywhere in the islands that Puerto Ricans live (my favorite part of Semana Santa). Stores, restaurants and streets are full. Hopefully everyone will remember why they come to beautiful places and leave only footprints behind. Some very wishful thinking on this Earth Day...
