- Been awhile

I know it's been awhile, but as they say no news is good news.
I'm happy to report that the weather has been beautiful and the tourists are here!! With more hotels open than last year things are looking more..... and well less than the island that use to be. The less, I'm sure some of you are wondering what I mean. Things are getting busy here but that's for another discussion.
Haven't been doing much fishing but the fishermen on the rocks in George Town always seem to of had a good day.
With June just around the corner, to my neighbors around the Caribbean and on Cayman may the summer pass quick and quietly.

- maybe some rain tonight

- Cold front

  • Date: Fri, 6 Jan 2006 17:55:25 -0500
Well the latest cold front is blowing in right now as I type. Hope no one has left their boat on the west side, weather man says this is going to be a good one, maybe some surf on the beach.
They say the temp might fall to the low 70's tonight, going to get chilly!!!!!! I know 70 that's not chilly......maybe that's why I live in the Caribbean.
Other than that happy to say that all is well..... if we could get rid of the Ritz Carlton....I'll stop there!
The weather has been beautiful.....guess this is why we go though hurricane season. Worth every minute of it.
Well that's all for now.... maybe I'll get the camera out and post some North Wester shots for you tomorrow.
  Later for now!

Well a new year to start all over again. Maybe the 100lb Wahoo......let me dream. The sun is shining bright the wind has been light these days. I look at the weather map before writing this, looks like the sky should be clear as far as one can see tomorrow.
The weather looks like a front maybe later on in the week, never now when that report can change.
If you're coming to visit this is the time to do it, New year's eve was crystal clear skies, fire works were wonderful.
Nothing new and exciting to report....... talk to ya later.

- Cold Front.

Another cold front blew through today, makes you realize how spoiled we are, when it goes below 80F, At work I'm wet all day and standing in the breeze.....gets chilly well anyway not much rain with the last front. Skies should clear up tomorrow by the looks of the satellite picture.
A picture from our Monday night surf show that we do at the surf park...... another hard day at work!
No other news to report, Ritz Carlton is finally open.... seeming to have calmed the traffic down alittle. Cruise ships are out of control, stay out of town at all cost.
Water temp has drop little hope to get out in a bit a see what the Wahoo are doing, maybe a picture or two of a Cayman Wahoo.
   Happy New Year......

Hard to believe that one could think that it's cold here, now when I say cold.... I fully aware that here are some people that would think that this is balmy warm! Well I live here and if I think it's cold well its probably not that cold.
Keep in mind I think that the record low for Cayman is around 68 F.
Today it was 73 F when I woke up, 5 degrees. Now when standing there wet all day in that cool breeze....man let me tell ya!!! Chilly!!!!!
Other than that it rained all day. Cold front in or area...
Weather man says the front is going to stall in our area. Would image that means some more clouds and some rain..... I Love it when it rains!!!!
Merry Christmas to all from the sunny Caribbean (most of the time)

Well while planes slide off the runway in the frozen north life in the tropics is beautiful. Besides the traffic..... not a weather issue.
Winds are generally out of the east-northeast, wind speed ranges allot. Thursday it was around 18-20 knots. Not good for the parasail but oh well.
Then there are the days that it stays below 10knts and I get to get out of bed early in my eternal search for a 100lb Wahoo. Check out the sunrise I had the other morning. Will post more pictures later

- Getting flooded again.
  • From: Chris McTaggart <cmctagga at candw.ky>
  • Date: Fri, 18 Nov 2005 09:13:59 -0500
Good Morning All,

Rain, rain, and more rain. It continued right through the night and extremely heavy at time, but never letting up completely. I guess the Island was so saturated from the last long period of rain at the beginning of the month that it did not take long for the areas that normally flood and more, to do so. The roads if not completely flooded, have large areas of water on one side or the other which makes it difficult in some places to drive. The morning traffic gets slowed down even worse with these conditions and if the rain continues throughout the day, the traffic I will assume can be slower no matter what time of the day.

Checked with Air Traffic and there are no known delays at the present time.

Since sunrise we have had a break from the down pours and only having drizzle rain now. For the past 12 hours my station has recorded 7.7 inches of rainfall and 2.2 inches in the last 6 hours. By the look of the satellite photo, we may have a break from the heavy rain, although there seems to be more to come unless it rains out over the ocean. Cold Front seems to be stalled just over the south Gulf of Mexico and the area of LOW that is over us with this rain will probably battle to move north and just dissipate doing so.

Current Conditions:

Wind - E-NE at 5-10 MPH
Temp - 78 F
Humid - 95%
Barometer - 29.89 (Steady)
Rainfall - Last 6 Hours = 2.2 in / Last 12 Hours = 7.7 in / Month Total = 11.46 in
Conditions - Overcast Skies with light rain, occasionally heavy at times.
Forecast - Continued same conditions for next 12 - 24 hours.

Off for a few days in Miami, so maybe someone will keep the conditions posted.

Big HELLO to my friends in Canada, Australia, U.S., and others who check by the site regularly.
Everyone have a great day and a lovely weekend.
Take care

- Weather Disturbance Cayman Area.
  • From: Chris McTaggart <cmctagga at candw.ky>
  • Date: Thu, 17 Nov 2005 22:31:51 -0500
Good Evening Friends,

(Thu - Nov 17, 2005 10:30 PM EST)

It has been a while since I posted as nothing much has been happening around the Cayman Area except sunny skies and the normal.

Now we have an area of disturbed weather that formed once again off the east coast of lower Central America and has worked it's way northward into the Cayman Area today. Since this morning we have seen increasing cloudiness over our area starting with a high overcast pretty much all day up until about 4:00 PM this afternoon when the skies to the NE-S-SW starting becoming very dark and heavy cloudy conditions. Rain began around 5:00 PM and we have been having bands of heavy rain rolling in on and off all evening until present. Currently (started at 9:30 PM) we are having an extremely heavy downpour of rain at an average rate of 3-4 inches per hour according to my station monitor. Actually seeing rain rates on the monitor of 6.5 inches per hour at times. From the NOAA floater satellite photo over this area, we are in for lots of rain throughout the night and into tomorrow.

Current Conditions:

Wind - NE at 10-15 MPH (25 MPH High recorded during rain storm)
Temp - 75 F
Humid - 99 %
Barometer - 29.90 inches (Slight fall trend)
Rainfall - 7.45 inches (Month Total so far)
Todays Rainfall - 3.78 inches (Since 5:00 PM) and increasing.
Sky Conditions - Overcast with Embedded Thunderstorms in all quadrants. Lightning and Thunder present in heavy rain showers.

Plan to go to Miami for the weekend, so i will keep you updated on conditions until mid-day Friday. I am sure someone else will continue to post an update after that if these conditions continue.

Everyone have a great evening.
Good Night

The weather today was beautiful. The last round of rain was enough for just about everybody. But the salt from Wilma had to go. Last winter was brown.... might be a nice green one for awhile. That said I think we've seen the of the rain for the winter...... Maybe I shouldn't of said anything. Wind is blowing 10-12 knots some where out of the east. Makes it a little bumpy offshore to go fishing. If that's the biggest trouble I have....... All is well for now. I'll stay in touch.

Good Evening All,

Well the rain did continue for a few hours after my last post, but now it seems to have rained itself out. Looking at the Satellite picture I see where we are once again getting a clear area passing over the Islands. So tonight is fair, see a few stars, so I know there is breaks in the overcast. This evenings total rain was 1.96 inches, and the station has now started a fresh log for November. Gosh this year has gone fast, it's almost time to play Santa on my flights, which is a fun time of the year for me to fly!

Not much to report on tonight so I will just pass on the latest info.

Current Conditions -

Wind - Calm
Temp - 82 F
Humd - 98%
Barometer - 30.00 (Steady)
Rainfall - 1.96 inches (Todays Total)
Skies - Generally High Overcast with breaks. Distant Lightning S-SW-W.
Station Forecast (seems to be fairly accurate) - Increasing Clouds, Little Temperature Change, and possible Precipitation all within next 24-48 Hours.

Keep getting lots of e-mails from friends that visit the site, and I am always happy to hear from you.

Everyone have a great evening.

- It's back....

  • Date: Tue, 01 Nov 2005 18:40:04 -0500
Hi Ya'll,

Just a quick note and I will do a later night post.
It's back.......

Rain, and I mean heavy rains. I guess my station forecasting is more accurate than I thought. At about 4:40-5:00 pm after a real sunny and hot day, the skies became rapidly overcast and to the E-S-W just heavy, dark clouds rolled in, and then the rains, heavy rains hit. It has been raining since then and is still as I type.

So far since 5:30 pm - 1.7 inches at a rate of .75 inches per hour.
Appears to all be originating out of Central America and being fed into the NW Caribbean flow that is very dominant as you can see in any Loop Caribbean Satellite Photo. Click on this site I you can see it.

http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/TROP/DATA/RT/watl-ir4-loop.html

I will update later before I turn in with a final days report.
See ya then.

- Sunny skies...hot, hot,hot.
  • From: Chris McTaggart <cmctagga at candw.ky>
  • Date: Tue, 01 Nov 2005 13:32:56 -0500
Hello StormCarib World,

The rain in Cayman finally gave us a break starting yesterday afternoon after 2:00 pm. It is back to the norm with Scattered clouds, sunny, and indeed hot.....steaming, as you can well imagine with the ground being all soaking.

Looks like a little weather both to the east over Jamaica and down south around the Nicaragua coast that may bring rain later in the week depending on the flows if they keep up the current trend. Certainly the area to the south is very favorable for late developing storms, so we continue to watch it for sure. History shows 1933 as a very similar year of pattern, so around November 13th may be a check point if history repeats itself.

Anyway off to simulator training finally as Miami conditions continue to get better. I will not post for awhile and hopefully nothing really to report on over the next few days. But I know the local posters here will keep the info flowing if anything arises.

Current Conditions -
Wind - E to SE at 6-10 MPH
Temp - 94 F (feels like 100+)
Humd - 70 %
Barometer - 29.94 (Slight fall trend)
Skies - Scattered Clouds and sunny.
Total Rainfall for October - 22.37 inches (recorder at my station)

Station Forcast - More Clouds, Cooler, Precipitation likely and Windy (Hmm, maybe it sees something)
I will see how accurate this thing forcasts.:)

Have a great week ahead and stay safe.
Best wishes to all.

Capt. Chris McTaggart

I'm going to take a guess that we've had about 20 minutes of sun in the last 4 days...... Salt from Wilma is gone, but enough is enough.
Wind is shifting around quiet a bit. Looks like its blowing out of the s-w right now, not very windy though maybe 5-9 knts.
Hope that when the rain finally goes away we might have a few good days of fishing.
Hope to dry out soon, bet the grass while need to be mowed when the sun finally comes out.

- Rain continues....

Good Morning,

Well we did have a break from the rain yesterday as I posted, but this only lasted up to the late afternoon like I thought it would, and the skies became overcast again around 4:30 pm. Since then we have been having continuous rain, and extremely heavy downpours at times.

This morning between 5:30 - 6:30 we had a downpour that dumped 2.42 inches rain. Since the rain started back yesterday in the evening, the total for this period is another 4.87 inches.

For sure the Island is getting very saturated as I am seeing area's of settled water that only happens normally under extreme conditions. Roads continue to have areas of heavy flooding, so slow traffic is continuous all day as everyone tries to take alternate routes to get to their destinations.

It is a full year since "Ivan" crashed into Cayman and left the vegetation, ground and ponds full of salt water. Now for sure the entire Island is being washed and cleansed of the salt it left behind. I am sure this is Mother Nature's way of dumping the "Miracle-Gro" to replenish her damaged paths.

Current Conditions.

Wind - West at 3-5 MPH
Temp - 76 F
Humd - 100%
Barometer - 29.99 (Rising)
Skies - Overcast with rain cloud activity all quadrants.
Rainfall - Continuous Light, moderate to heavy at times. 2.63 inches (Last 6-8 Hours)
Monthly Total - 21.87 inches

For those of you on the Island, please drive extremely careful and be very conscious of the other drivers as they too maybe trying to avoid the flooded road conditions. Plan your route to avoid areas that are known to flood.

Will update this evening.
Have a great day!

Capt. Chris McTaggart

Good Afternoon All,

Back from a great 2 days of flying. Just a little light chop out in and out of Cayman, but in all smooth flights.

Looks like since this morning the sun has finally shown its face after a gloomy and rainy 4-5 days. Can still see to the E through S of Cayman still has weather and rain showers but if it does drift over the area we probably won't get that until later in the evening and night. So for the remainder of the day we should generally have fair skies.

I see "Beta" finally made her turn to the west. Hopefully the only main concern for Nicaragua and Honduras is dealing with the torrential rain that it may produce. I am glad for them that Beta did not intensify anymore before making her move west. Hopefully everyone is safe and well in these areas.

Due to the rainy conditions in Grand Cayman, the Annual Pirates Week festivities have been cancelled and I understand are being re-scheduled for next week.

Current Conditions.

Wind - NE at 10-15 gusting to 21 MPH
Temp - 87 F (feels like 90's)
Humd - 78%
Barometer - 29.89 (Slight Fall trend)
Rainfall - 5.5 (Last 24 Hours) Total for October 16.8 inches
Station Forecast - Increasing Clouds and Cooler, precipitation continuing within 12 hours.

Hope everyone is having a lovely weekend.
Happy Halloween.
Take care,

Capt. Chris McTaggart
Savannah, Grand Cayman.

Good Morning,

Still had more rain after my last post, however a little break this morning. Still overcast and areas of heavy rain clouds in all quadrants. Looks like alot more rain to come over the next 12-24 hours unless it fizzles and rains itself out over the ocean. Very large area of weather just east of Jamaica should bring even more weather to our area early Monday.

"Beta" still wondering down south, but is now a Hurricane and intensifying. Just monitoring her closely.

Current Conditions.

Wind - E-NE at 5-10 MPH
Temp - 82 F
Humid - 82%
Barometer - 29.96 inches (Steady)
Rainfall Amount since last post - 0.51 inch

Off to fly the friendly skies back and forth to Miami until tomorrow. Will post again then.
Everyone have a great day.

Hello out there,

Well as the earlier posts advised, we are certainly getting the October rains I have not seen in many years on or Island. It has been raining on and off foe 3 days now, but today it seems like it has been continuous.
My station has recorded 5.95 inches of rain in the past 20 hours and 3.25 inches in the past 8 hours. I was out tonight and many of the roads between Savannah and George Town have large areas of settled water and some are inches deep. Starting to see that the ground is becoming very saturated and it looks like we are in for some more heavy rain in the next 6 to12 hours. Cayman Brac looks like you will have a flood in the next few hours.

Anyway not much else happening here on the Island, just lots of rain. Miss "Beta" to the south is starting to look a little disturbing to me. This storm will be a hurricane shortly, and I am very concerned of her taking a Northerly Track and even a possible slight NE track for a bit. If she stays on a northerly trend and clears the Bluefields Nicaragua point without coming on land, we must then pay very close attention. Getting caught in the Northeast flow that is just north of the Nicaragua area can result in very worrying conditions for us again. So lets keep at least one eye on "Beta" for now folks and hope she makes that westerly move they have predicting. Hhhmmm !

Current Conditions:

Wind - Easterly at 8-12 MPH
Temp - 75 F
Hum - 100%
Barometer - 29.91 (Falling)
Skies - Overcast with continuous rain (heavy downpours at times)
Rainfall - 5.01 inches (Total) and rising.

Have a great day today.

The amount of rain that has fallen in the last hers is amazing.(I live on the very north end of West Bay.) It's filled up the bucket I use to catch water, to water the plants twice now at least 5 gallons so far.
The four way intersection in West Bay has a significant amount of water starting to flood the area. Never lasts very long drains pretty quickly, after the rain stops, It's really coming down at times.
With the fresh water getting rid of the salt spray the Wilma left behind, things should turn nice and green again.
Other than the rain nothing worth noting to bother with, Hope Beta makes that left turn......sorry to those it will affect.....It's been over a year with the power on....a few outages here and there but that's C.U.C for you....anyway.
 Later for now.

Sucks!! Really wet, rainy but fortunately not too windy - reminds me of
England!!

It seems there is quite a disturbance in the Caribbean Basin at the moment,
and possible threat of Beta coming our way - although I understand the chance
is minuscule. Perhaps worth keeping an eye on regardless.

Looks like Pirates weekend might be wet, wet and wet!! Were going to do the
battle/landing in our boat, but might just settle for the parade (if it still
goes ahead). Either way, I think the majority of residents here in Cayman are
itching to have Pirates Landing this year, as Ivan took this away from us in
2004! Rain or shine, I will be a wench!! :-)

Keep on trucking!!

Well the seas have started to calm down, by tomorrow afternoon should be able to get the parasail boat to the beach. To bad we can't launch at the Lobster Pot ramp cause it's full of sand and the pavement in one corner has been undermined.
The weather today was beautiful, wind has shifted round to the east-northeast blowing at what seems 12-15knts and there is just a hint of that cool Christmas breeze. It's a treat!!
With the Temperature dropping a bit maybe the Wahoo might start the winter bite.
Just watched the tropical update and Dr. Steve pointed out a area of low pressure north of Panama which makes it south of us.....please bring the cold fronts and cool the water.
Later for now, if  your bored and haven't been to the island ever or lately, check out www.blackpearl.ky it's where I work. Click on the wave pool thingy and that's what I'm doing.(For all that I've lost contact with and found them through this web site, gald to hear from you all.)

Looks like we're okay for a day or two, I say this with keeping mother nature in mind.... you never know!!!!!
Hope every one in Cancun and Cozumel are safe and well, uncomfortable yes but safe. From personal experience with Ivan, be patient the lights will come on soon
Have more pictures to down load from the camera that I'll post for thoughts who want to see.( Please don't email requesting pictures to be sent to you....  I'm a busy fellow.)

While the wind seems to be settling little the waves are still pumping in. Here's a picture of a spot we're waiting to paddle out at......needs to drop a foot or two.... can't believe I'm saying that.

Friday morning 7:00am photo attached. Still much wave action, though it is
shifting northwards. The ship/tug is still out there.

For those of you who live outside of Grand Cayman (and
those who do live here, of course), here are a few
more pics of Wilma Waves.

Health Warning: Although it makes a great picture, I
wouldn't advise standing in the line of fire.

  • Date: Fri, 21 Oct 2005 00:12:36 -0500
Hello Ya'll,

Well still a little windy, but generally starting the calm down trend. The surge I can even hear from my house inland, has increased as it was expected to. Although I can't see it as it is dark,I can sure hear the waves crashing. The photo's posted earlier are fantastic, thanks to all who posted them.

Tomorrow is suppose to bring the largest surge and wave action to the West coast, which is the George Town and 7-Mile Beach area.

Unfortunately this will be my last post for awhile as I am now being sent to Costa Rica tomorrow morning to flight test two of our aircraft which are coming out of "C" Checks (extensive scheduled checks). Should get back home sometime late on the weekend or early week.

I am sure the posts will continue to come in, and if anyone gets anymore story telling photo's please post them so I can view them when I get back.

Current Conditions:
Wind - SSE at 15-20 MPH (Occasional gusts to 25 MPH)
Temp - 84 F
Humid - 82%
Barometer 29.79 (Steady)
Skies - Broken Cloud Layers and a Thin High Overcast. Very little rain this afternoon and evening.

Please keep our neighboring friends in Mexico in your prayers. May they all be safe and secure.
Have a great evening and a lovely weekend.

Capt. Chris McTaggart
Savannah, Grand Cayman.

We were in Georgetown at around 9pm. Usual crowd of trainwreck
admirers/opportunists watching the storm beat up the harbour - better than
watching CSI or repeats of Daybreak. Debris everywhere, huge rocks and
wood, car tyres and sand.

We moved along Harbour Drive against the buildings fairly well away
from the dockside but one wave at least soaked us up to the waists. The
new passenger dock looks like it is taking a battering. I took photos earlier
today but those already posted show enough.

Wilma's centre is now 300 miles away but the waves breaking in GTand
all around here are 20 foot and more, long wave-length too. This in an area
supposedly protected by a reef. There was a tug (I think) sitting a mile or
so offshore this afternoon, I supose it will be getting difficult to run to the
North Sound.

High Tide in a hour or so. Batten down the hatches.

- Big Waves continue
  • From: "Joyce" <joymar at candw.ky>
  • Date: Thu, 20 Oct 2005 22:32:00 -0500

I was just downtown and Harbour Drive is still closed as is most of North Church and part of South Church. The waves are still huge and crashing on and over the cruise terminals. There are lots of big rocks on the road, some going well up Goring Ave. Lots of people down there watching, but none silly enough to go anywhere near the sea side. Hard to believe this is all happening from an eye 300+ miles away. It is still quite windy down there as well.

Remember Mitch and Michelle were very similar and in the end caused lots of damage from afar. Hopefully it will settle down soon so we can get it all cleaned up before the Bigger ‘n Better Pirates Week and welcome all the tourists and residents downtown!

It is so hard to think of Mexico and Cuba and realize what they are going to experience.

A good night to all.

Joyce

These were taken today in George Town. someone else's pics that were sent
to me We still have heavy wave action on the West Bay road, parts of
which are still flooded.

Looks like a direct hit for Cancun - those poor people.

- George Town - pictures of Wilma Waves - 20 October 2005......

Here are some quite magnificent pictures of the waves
that hit George Town this morning (courtesy of my
husband!!)

I particularly find the picture with the tourists
running for the stairs, quite remarkable. According
to my husband, they were looking up at the people who
were looking at the huge wave about to engulf them and
who were also shouting for them to run!! Thankfully,
they made it in time (on just!!).

Wilma is obviously still lurking!!

I heard that there were cars under water in Savannah,
and Domino's Pizza was flooded up that way too.

Public Beach is pretty inaccessible as there is water
from the sea flooding the road. It took one colleague
over an hour to get from West Bay to town this
morning!!

Road closures: North Church Street, South Church
Street, Harbour Drive, Mary Street and Bodden?s Road.

She'll soon be outta here - thank goodness!!

- I'm Back
  • From: Chris McTaggart <cmctagga at candw.ky>
  • Date: Thu, 20 Oct 2005 15:15:16 -0500
Hello my special friends and family:

So sorry about the rush posting on Tuesday night, but I did get short notice, just a hour before flight time. I would not leave home until I made the post, it was the last thing I did before going out the door.

I must share with you that it was the most horrible feeling being in a hotel in Miami and looking back at my little precious Island and worrying about family and friends (everybody in fact). The trip up on Tuesday night went okay with a bit of a squirmy departure initially due to the windy conditions, but I had the B737-300 (Sponge Bob), so I used the performance and climbed quickly out of the conditions. 65 miles North of Cayman I was level at FL360 and it was smooth sailing from there.

I spoke with "The Hurricane Hunters" who were coming back from Wilma and heading home and they said she was at the time 110 MPH. Two hours after getting into the hotel in Miami, Wilma was a wopping Cat-5 with 175 MPH winds. Folks, that is when reality hit and I could not begin to describe the feeling.

WILMAAAAAAAAAAA!
At least we know that Fred, Barney or Betty can't come after Wilma!

Flight gear was back on Wednesday at noon and I flew back and forth to Miami all yesterday (Wed) evening and got back home at 10:30 last night. All the flights went great, but I must say a bit tedious getting into Cayman on the mid-afternoon (4:30 pm) flight, just had to fine tune my feathers a bit. All in all, I had a great day doing what I love so much. :)

Glad to see friends here on the Island kept the post going and was very informative, thanks guys! I know everyone out there appreciates it.

Since Wednesday Morning, Cayman experienced very gusty conditions, very dense cloud cover, and at times extremely heavy rains. We had a total rainfall of  around 7-8 inches, in approximately 24 hours. Winds were constant at 25-30 mph and gusts were frequent at 45+ MPH. My station is not in a 100% ideal location to maximize the wind flow and I am also inland, so I guess we had higher winds. I plan to elevate the anemometer very soon, so I can get more accurate readings.
The South - West - Southwest coastline is taking quite a beating from the storm surge that Wilma is producing. There are reports of coastal damage and the sea flowing across the roads in areas. Our 7-Mile beach is experiencing very high wave action, but the worst of it is yet to be felt over the next 24 hours as Wilma gets more in a NW quadrant relative to Cayman. The backwash is yet to come.

I will try to post some of the reports that I know are confirmed later on. If any locals on the site have any news or stories, please post, .....thanks.

Current Conditions:

Wind - S-SE at 20-24 MPH (High Gust 35, still fairly frequent)
Temp - 86 F
Humd - 80%
Barometer - 29.74 inches
Skies - Overcast with embedded Thunderstorm activity in all quadrants. Occasional bands of rain and squalls still persist in the area.

To our friends in the Mexico Area, I will certainly continue to keep you in my thoughts and prayers.
Please stay safe!

I will post later, until then have a good day.
Capt. Chris McTaggart

Although Wilma is quite some distant away, she continues to create problems for us and will continue to do so through this evening, at least. We hear that North Side has yet to get the worst it is going to get, so if anyone doesn’t still have shutters up, and in particular those on the sea, should get them up without delay.

A number of roads are being cleared of debris and until then are relatively unsafe with police turning people back from the districts who were trying to get into work this morning. Many businesses are running with skeleton staff as a result. Some of us lost power for a couple of hours this morning in the Crewe Road/Smith Road area but I believe everyone now has power back in this area.

I am hearing quite a few reports of oceanfront units sustaining damage but I do not know to what extent. If you are traveling to the island you may want to double check with the hotel or condo but I do not think the damage is significant or widespread. It maybe some mopping up and debris outside.

It remains quite windy here and there are some very strong gusts. The sky is not quite as dark and not as much rain as yesterday, at least where I am located in town.

Hey gang...just came home from work early....the power is off on Walkers Road, parts of South Sound, Crewe and Smith Roads....the CUC substation in South Sound is the culprit...when I arrived at my place on Northwest Point road, the waves and surge are as big if not bigger than yesterday. Our brand new a/c units that took 6 months to get have been washed away again. the power is still on but some major waves have gone all the way passed us towards the road. The a/c units are still hanging on by the piping but the electrical has been ripped out and they are covered in debris....looks just like it did right after Ivan the Queer mashed us up....at least I can be thankful for the internet still working to post this to....better to be hot than cold I always say! We'll keep ya posted kids, will get and shoot if I can this afternoon....My thoughts and prayers are out to those who suffered damage here..especially to Steve and the gang at Divers Down on the waterfront, so sorry mate!

Looks like it's going to be a wave machine for us!!
Traffic was a nightmare this morning... or so I'm told. The sea washed over the road beside the Courtyard Marriot, so the traffic was diverted behind Governor's Harbour. Kinda makes me gald that I have strange hours.
While the storm is still south of us I'm sure that the waves will come for awhile, wind is still blowing, not as hard as yesterday, but still seems to be 15-20 knts.
Just going for a drive to check out the surf, let you know what's going on alittle later.

Dark now, and a few more squalls have passed through, wind a bit less at
the moment. Squalls seem to be of shorter duration. Sea beyond the reef off
Parrots Landing was getting VERY lumpy just before dusk.
Forecaster on one of the US channels (Philadelphia - how di that happen?)
is now suggesting theer are alternate paths when Wilma takes her right
angled turn. We just have to continue hoping she slips through the middle
of the Cancun-Cuba gap.
Fosters and Hurleys supermarkets did open, but fairly quiet. Some pubs are
open for business,; Reids, Fidels and the other usual suspects; but it's a
good night for staying in.....

The wind is still howling...... well it's blowing way to hard to paddle out, but we gave it a try. Waves on the north end of the beach are, was breaking 8- 10 feet. However wind is just holding you on the top. Usually leads to an unpleasant  experience.
The rain still falls pretty hard, they have cleared the road in front of the court yard Marriot and have been told south sound has been cleared once already. Looks like the grocery stores are open.
Looks like we been spared, however I cross my fingers for or friends to the north that yet have to face this thing.... best of luck.
Let you know if the wind dies down enough to have a surf tomorrow, Will be up early!!!!

I drove out through South Sound as far as Spotts. There are a few areas where there is quite a bit of large rocks impeding travel on South Sound road. The waves along the south side are quite high – difficult for me to measure height but I would guess over 12ft. The downtown area looks good and it is not too right at the cruise ship landing but worsens as you go along West Bay Road. The sand has washed across near the Courtyard Marriott. Most areas that had a lot of tree damage or mangrove loss from Ivan has debris on the road. In West Bay we came across some ill advised young men who thought that standing on a dock that was being hard hit by crashing waves was a form of amusement. For those of you who don’t know, this is life threatening, not only for the thrill seeks but more importantly for any rescue worker who would have to risk their lives to save someone. Please keep that in mind.

It is still raining and windy but there are lulls and overall we are doing very well. I just can’t believe how lucky we are. We just need Wilma to speed up and get a bit further north and hope that the front in the Gulf of Mexico doesn’t keep it from moving. Of course we realize that whilst we are spared many other countries won’t be and we can only hope for the best for everyone in this storm’s track.

The internet and e-mail weren’t working for a while, which is perhaps why you haven’t heard much from Cayman. The warnings and watches have been cancelled now and I did hear a plane (our Captain Chris returning perhaps?) so things are returning to normal. I won’t post again unless our situations worsens in any way.

This is Dolphin Point today. As evident, Ivan destroyed this place and Wilma is just washing out the dirt. Shot approximately 45 minutes ago...The debris field is growing...again! You can see that the erosion is continuing...

I have not been out on the roads today but have talked with some folks that said other parts of the island are just experiencing some rain but the seas are not as rough as they are right here on Northwest Point. There are even a number of businesses open now, including 1 grocery store at this time. More later,

- Wilma soon gone!
  • From: "Joyce" <joymar at candw.ky>
  • Date: Wed, 19 Oct 2005 12:51:34 -0500

Hello folks,

Sorry for my previous posting. It was actually 4:20AM when I wrote it but I couldn’t post it then someone sent it in error just a short while ago! Since then, Wilma has nicely moved west a bit more, leaving us some wind and rain but not too much else. I do understand that there is some localized flooding, heaving wave action and some debris from the sea along some roadways. I am in George Town and in my immediate area there is no visible effects at all, save for some deep puddles along the road.

The Government is lifting the TS warning and hurricane watch as at 1PM today and will replace that with a severe weather alert. We can expect some winds in the 20-30 mph range with higher gusts and wave heights between 9-12ft.

We are so lucky that this tremendous storm did not come any closer. We should be back to normal later today and all businesses and schools are expected to open tomorrow. Unfortunately, I am scheduled to fly to Tampa on Sunday so Wilma may still be in my travel path for several more days.

  • Date: Wed, 19 Oct 2005 11:46:37 -0600

It is very early morning and thankfully Wilma is continuing her west northwest path and has moved slightly further west than early predicted. It is quite windy out with occasional pounding gusts and raining but, from my viewpoint in George Town, everything seems to be quite normal. There does not appear to be any significant water accumulation in the parking lot area (a good sign!).

Wilma is now a catastrophic category 5 so we will certainly breathe easier once she is completely past us and much further north. I believe the next several hours or so will be the worst we will get. According to the latest NHC this is now the most powerful storm in history based on barometric pressure recorded on the last hurricane flight.

Just tried to go for a drive...... don't. The rain is blinding at certain points. Wind is still blowing out of the east at I'm guessing around 30knts.
The sea is coming over the road by public beach, small rocks and sand in the road. Looks like there might be surf in the morning, but at the moment the rain and wind will rule the day. Just hope that the west then north west track contuine.
Gas stations and grocery stores are closed at the moment, on the news last night, they said the stores might open in the afternoon weather pending. Don't think that they will open if the weather doesn't get any better, but that's is just my guessing not an offical word!!!
Will post later this afternoon. hope to include some pictures of the sea state when the rain lets me.

Woke up at 5am this morning because of the howling of the wind.  Cannot believe that I went to bed and Wilma was a cat 2 and now its a cat 5.....  Unbelievable, the wind at the moment is 27knots here at se/s direction.  The temp is currently70 degrees.
Not sure of any damage around as it is still dark, there doesnt seem to be any in my garden but I have no idea for the rest of the island.  I hope we are doing ok.
Went out in the garden to let Bruno out at 5am to keep him calm for the rest of the day. Now he is sleeping.  Will report later when we have more news.  All flights into and out of Cayman (all islands) are cancelled this morning and will let you know when I hear more on that.
Stay safe everyone.

Just went out with our Lab, "Spike" and the rain is coming down fairly hard now. The seas right here on Northwest Point road are breaking over the iron shore and the salt spray is mixing with the rain. As soon as it is light enough and I can get a closer look, I will post from this side of the island again. Turning into a cat.5 overnight is not what anyone wanted. Be safe everyone, be smart!

Got up for the 5am advisory to find Wilma has jumped to a cat 5! Possibly
with the lowest central pressure on record, and a tiny eye.
Here (South GT) it's gusting to about 20kts and generally from the South
East if my wind wizard is telling the truth.
Seas at Parrots Landing aren't high but it's sheltered and too dark to see
much anyway.

Safe flying to Capt. Chris. Don't think that I'd want to be on that plane for take off, but than I'm not that fond of flying!!!!!!
It's started to rain and I mean rain, while I lack that weather station that Capt. Chris has I'll do my best to keep it short and accurate.
Winds still blowing out of the east- south east and what seems to be 25-30knts. As I left the beach area of the island (west side of the island) this afternoon I could see that the swell was starting to wrap around to that side of the island meaning that Wilma is certainly on the move.
While it seems that we will escape the worst that Wilma has to offer, a good night's sleep might not be on the agenda for the night. I'm sure I'm not the only one feeling a little anxiety tonight.
 Will post again later

Good Evening Storm Carib,

Sorry but I was planning to update through the night to keep everyone updated. Unfortunately I just got called to take one of our aircraft out of Grand Cayman to Miami until this thing passes.

Currently bands of rain, heavy at times and full cloud cover.
Winds have been steady above 20-25 MPH and higher in gusts (Max 35 MPH so far)
Temp 76 F
Barometer 29.74 inches

Looking for continued increasing rain throughout the night with windy conditions. Don't think we will get much more than 45 MPH winds.

Anyway, sorry for the rush off.
Everyone stay safe and I will touch base when I am back on the rock

It is 8:40pm our time - been raining off and on since late this afternoon.
On the way home gas stations were very busy as well as Hurleys. About an
hour ago we had some really strong winds and rain. Since then wind has been
not so bad - slightly raining. The local Met Office says closest point of
Wilma will be a 3am and we should only get tropical storm winds and of
course a lot of rain.
Gov't offices are to be closed tomorrow as well as schools. The gov't is
asking businesses to be closed tomorrow to keep people off the street. The
local met office said we should be in the clear by tomorrow afternoon. We
will see.
Did not see many homes etc boarded up - so I guess we are all hopeing that
she continues on her northwest course. Wind seems to be out of the
east/southeast - at least here in Omega Bay/Prospect.
Did not see many reports here, so thought I would drop this line.
More later!

Checked the surf this morning Marnier's cove was breaking well over head, till the wind came up, moved to south sound but just got too windy.
Hoping it will pass to the west and then go north might give us a few days of decent surf.

Little bit of change here.

Wilma you are jogging to the West a bit....go girl. Looks like you even want to go back south for a bit.

Anyway friends...Stormy Clouds over the Cayman area are beginning to increase causing a very gloomy look. Almost seems like it is 6 or 7 PM. Winds have picked up quite a bit now ESE at 15-22 MPH with gusts as high as 30 MPH. Seeing more of a constant 20 MPH trend then the gusts. Looks like this evening may be a bit on the rainy side. Temp is 80 F and the Barometer is 29.69 and steadily falling.

See you on the evening update.
Chow for now.

Just a quick lunchtime Update. 11:40 am (EST)

Wilma as you probably have already seen was updated to the command of Hurricane on the last official NOAA report. Still tracking NW at 7 Knots and I hope she stays on that track for awhile before the North trend. Too close to us will mean wave action on our South and also West coast as she crosses, which is not a good thought.

Winds have picked up over the past 2 hours to a more gusty state and shifting more to East / Southeast pattern. Certainly overcast now with scattered Thunderstorm activity in all quadrants. Wilma is starting to show her presence that she is in the area.

Wind - E-SE at 15 gusting 20 MPH ( High 26 MPH)
Temp - 84F

Well it is now a hurricane!!!!  This system is big and unfortunately although it is not coming here it will be close.  The outer  bands are going to be affecting us.  The wind has picked up already.  No rain as yet so I am making the most of the breeze and getting the washing done!!!!
Should be fine again just days of heavy rain and a breeze!
Get your supplies ready "JUST IN CASE"
Will update again soon from South Sound when we have more information.

Good Morning Storm Carib,

It's Tuesday Oct 18 at 9:00 am EST

I am now watching "Wilma" even more closely now as she has indeed jumped for the NW track after a small W track initially. I suspect NOAA will change the track forecast on their next update. Wilma indeed is on the NW track now but I expect a more trend closer to N bringing it closer to Cayman, Isle of Pines, across Cuba to Lower Florida. I hope I am wrong, as even with NOAA's current track, she will dump alot of rain on us from the NE and E quadrant. Being closer will only mean more. Cayman viewers, just keep glued to whatever means of updates you have over the next 24 hours. I suspect "Wilma" will be a hurricane within the next official update.

Well folks for us here in Cayman, we woke up to generally overcast skies (bit of blue to north only), with thunderstorms all around. Have already had two good downpours since sunrise in my area although not lasting very long. Expecting more rain as day progresses as the East thru South sector looks to be getting heavier with Thunderstorms. Sun is still trying hard to come through :)

I will update later with changes, but here is the current data.

Wind - East at 10 - 15 MPH (High so far 23 MPH)
Temp - 83 F
Humd - 80%
Barometer - 29.77
Rain - 0.68 inch (Last 12 Hours) 0.11 inch (Last Hour)
Skies - See above paragraph

Well see you weather trekies later.
Have a great day!

  • Date: Mon, 17 Oct 2005 22:00:15 -0500
Hello Ya'll

WILMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA, What are you doing!
That's for all you Flintstone Fans :)

As I posted yesterday, Wilma followed my estimate and went South and closer to Honduras coast. Now tonight she is starting to show some real color. Although currently stationary, forecasters have her starting a westward trend by tomorrow. She just might initially start a westward trend but again I would not be surprised if she makes a mad dash to the NW and even N track. For a while I thought she might even make a loop back to the east before establishing a new track. However certainly not out of our danger zone, so continue to monitor closely.

Today in Cayman was once again a fairly good day. Had a few morning showers and thereafter was a bright and sunny day. Just before sunset a large area of thunderstorms came over and dumped about 1/4 inch of rain within a 30 minute period. That cooled us down quickly for the night. Not much else to report.

Current Conditions

Wind - E-NE at 5 - 8 MPH ( High today 16 MPH)
Temp - 78 F (High today 89 F)
Humd - 95% (Average today 82%)
Barometer - 29.77 (showing a slight rise)
Current Skies - Overcast Skies, Thin in Areas. Thuderstorms E-S with distant lightning visible.

Anyway that's it for today.
Until tomorrow, have a peaceful night.

Good Morning all
Out this morning with Bruno for his walk and it is VERY calm,  no breeze at all.  It has rained during the night but nothing too bad.  It was a great day yesterday just the couple of showers in the morning but the rest of the day was good.
Looks like we are going to be lucky with this one,  it looks like it is going to keep going west and miss us.  Lets hope it doesnt change its course but I think we will be fine.
The airport was quiet yesterday and it doesnt seem that anyone is leaving because of the storm.  Lets see what today brings.
Will get the tins supply up and ready just in case.

- Final Update Sun-10/16/05
  • From: Chris McTaggart <cmctagga at candw.ky>
  • Date: Mon, 17 Oct 2005 00:08:07 -0500
Hi Everyone,

Well all in all a very pleasant day here in Cayman after the initial early morning showers. In the afternoon the overcast skies became broken and let lots of sunshine through for the rest of the day. Today was much cooler than the days we have been having and a nice breeze out of the NW made it even more pleasant. Still had lingering Thunderstorms that were scattered and had rain in different areas of the Island associated with them.

TD-24 seems to be just lingering to the SW of us about 155 miles, trying hard to get organized. NOAA still expects it to become a Tropical Storm by monday sometime. Although they have it as moving westward at 2 knots it almost appears that it has a tendency to stay even more south as well. Would not be surprised if it ends up closer to the Honduras area than currently forecasted. Steering currents are very weak so anything is possible at this point.

Current Conditions here:

Wind - NE at 2-3 MPH
Temp - 80 F (High today was 87 F)
Humd - 89%
Barometer - 29.73 (Steady)
Skies - Scattered Cumulus Clouds with Thin Cirrus at upper level.

Anyway until tomorrow, everyone have a very pleasant night.

- Early Conditions TD-24 - Cayman
  • From: Chris McTaggart <cmctagga at candw.ky>
  • Date: Sun, 16 Oct 2005 11:23:09 -0500
Good Morning "StormCaribe" surfers.

Hope all is well with everyone where ever you may be!

Things have been great here in Cayman and the weather has been mostly fair with times of rain which is normal for us in October. Now that TD-24 is a reality I may have more to report on and will do so as this area of weather slowly comes into our vicinity.

I am on vacation again as another storm develops so I will keep the Cayman Islands weather thread here on the site updated as I know so many family and friends come here first for their information. Since my last postings during "Emily" I am now better equipped to give more accurate data as I have now installed a Davis Vantage Pro 2 Weather Station, so I won't be estimating anymore. It logs all data and provides actual, forecast, trends, and history data by computer, so it is a pretty nifty piece of equipment.

Anyway, here is our current conditions:

Wind - NE to NNE 10 - 15 MPH (MAX wind of 22 MPH recorded within last 6 hours)
Temp - 88 F
Humidity - 82%
Barometer - 29.79 (Slight falling trend)
Rain - 0.08 in (Daily amount so far) / Total for month of October - 4.08 inches Conditions - Overcast skies with scattered embedded thunderstorms. Occasional breaks in overcast. Light drizzle with occasional rain for short periods.

TD-24 as I have been observing closely since yesterday, this morning seems to be starting an organizing trend. Very slow movement gives it time to intensify if the conditions are perfect. Slow moving areas of weather also have a tendency to wobble in direction movement quite easily as it becomes organized. I say this mainly for the locals here who read this site, to keep a close watch as things can change quite quickly.

I will make a few updates and will increase them depending on weather progression.
Have a safe and great day!

Capt. Chris McTaggart
Savannah, Grand Cayman.

Tropical Depression 24 is only now starting to take
effect. A few winds are present and it just started
raining in my area, i.e. the south side of Grand
Cayman. The meteorologists, predict that it might
become Wilma by this evening.

The Hurricane Committee for Grand Cayman issued a
tropical storm warning late yesterday evening, and we
are also on a hurricane watch.

Not much to report, asides from the above.

Will be up for a little longer so will report back in
a while if the weather changes, i.e. there is more
rain and/or winds.

- Heaving Rain in Grand Cayman
  • From: Cheekytaz <cheekytaz at yahoo.co.uk>
  • Date: Wed, 28 Sep 2005 23:31:23 +0100 (BST)
It has been heavily raining now since about 4.30pm.
It appears to be island wide. From what I am
presently witnessing, there is thunder and lightning
and visually it is very dark.

This is the cause of a tropical wave that has been
approaching our area over the last day or so.

Forcaster Beven reports Thunderstorm activity is
slowly becoming better organized...and upper-level
winds are gradually becoming more favorable for
development.

Hopefully it would have passed us by then!!

Take caution as I am sure the roads will be flooded in
some areas. I would recommend staying in unless you
really need to go out!!

Well, we've enjoyed the respite from the flurry or tropical activity earlier
in the season, and this weekend our thoughts and prayers are with the
residents of New Orleans and Gulf Coast areas in Mississippi, Louisiana, &
Alabama.

Thankfully TD#13 looks like it is steering North, which is a relief.

I've heard some comments recently about the tensions levels mounting here as
the anniversary of Ivan approaches. Nearly one year later and we're still
seeing the effects, but I'm still thankful and proud of the progress that
has been made.

Weatherwise nothing really significant to report. Last week we had some
thunderstorms, and lost power for several hours on Monday. Today there was
an usual breeze outside, but that was a relief as it has been very hot.

NHC Declares All Clear
17-JUL-2005
UPDATE ON HURRICANE EMILY
Issued: 9 am Sunday, 17 July, 2005

Key Message:
The National Hurricane Committee has issued the All Clear for all three
islands as Hurricane Emily continues on her west- northwesterly path at
20mph. With the 7 am advisory from the National Hurricane Centre in Miami
placing Hurricane Emily 115 miles southwest of Grand Cayman, Emily is
quickly moving away from our area.

While weather conditions are expected to remain wet and windy through this
morning, conditions will gradually improve throughout the course of the
day as Emily gradually retreats from our area.

Meanwhile, Emily is expected to continue its west-northwest track, with
the centre expected to reach the Yucatan Peninsula very late today
(Sunday) or early Monday.

NHC advice to local population: Residents should certainly be in no great
rush to start moving around on the roads unless they absolutely have to.
The good news for everyone is the bad news for would-be sightseers
there is really nothing dramatic to see as a result of Emily!

Utilities: Telephone and electricity services were not affected and the
water will be back on-line later today.

Aviation: Airport activities will resume around noon and persons wanting
to travel today are advised to contact their carrier.

Shelters: Some 700 people stayed in hurricane shelters overnight. Shelters
will be closing today as people returns to their homes. Total shelter
capacity for Hurricane Emily was 4000.

"We have all been extremely fortunate once more to have been spared the
potential wrath of a very serious storm. I'm extremely pleased to have
seen the efforts made by so many people to prepare for 'the worse' while
praying for the best. In this business, it is simply the only smart thing
to do.

The NHC is particularly grateful for the strong support and active
involvement of the Cabinet and indeed all parliamentarians.

And I am personally grateful to all of my many colleagues who contribute
to the NHC efforts and make my role so easy", said Chairman Donnie Ebanks.

Current conditions:

Grand Cayman
Winds: East to Southeast 35 to 45 knots with higher gusts this morning
becoming 15 to 25 knots by evening.
Rain: Sporadic showers.
Seas: Rough with wave heights of 9 to 12 feet. All small craft should
remain in safe harbour.

Details of Weather System, at 7 am:
Longitude: 82.8 W
Latitude: 18.3 N
Proximity: 115 miles SW of Grand Cayman
Speed of system and direction of movement: 20 mph, WNW
Maximum sustained wind speed: 150 mph, still a strong Category 4

Good Morning All,
    ...and is it ever!
Spent a fitful night listening to the rain, which went from steady and heavy to massive sudden downpours that sounded like truckfulls of water dumped all at once upon the zinc roof. A few rumbles of thunder woke me, but for the most part spent the night snuggled up with my 2-year-old feeling cool (AC stayed on) and safe (husband kept watch). Awesome.
This morning it's still raining, but it's letting up. I can see a few palm fronds strewn about the yard, there are long rumbles of thunder coming one after another, but the skies are getting lighter. What good fortune we have had. What a relief.
It almost seems anticlimactic in some sort of twisted way, but I guess it's just the pent up energy and tension being released. If it's anything like after Dennis passed us by last week, we will all sleep on and off until the rain stops. Worrying so hard is really exhausting.
Thank you again to the so many strangers that made contact over the past 24 hours. That incredible outpouring of support really makes me regain faith in people.
I send our family's best to the people in Cancun, etc.
With little "Freddy" gathering strength out there, I might be back sooner rather than later, but we'll keep our fingers crossed.

Good Morning Everyone,

It certainly is a great morning, especially for us here in Grand Cayman. Emily is now Northwest of the island and moving away at 20 kts....Go Girl !! :) I just have one thing to say to you, thanks for passing far enough away. Also if you are by chance "Ivan's" wife, I hope you don't have too many children that will be following you.

Well everything seems to be all okay. I have heard from folks in George Town, town side of South Sound, Prospect, Patrick Island, 7-mile beach and all seems to be just fine. Some parts of the South Sound road has been closed due to lots of debris (rocks etc) across the road. That was expected as alot of this area had nothing left since Ivan to protect it. Yesterday evening saw high seas in this area even before Emily got here and during the night and morning I could hear the loud roar of the seas as I am only 1/2 mile inland from the south coast in savannah.

Also heard that the locally known 'Gully" in upper savannah near the gas station is flowing with salt water as usually happens with any storm, so local residents avoid it, it is pure salt water and not good for you cars :)

We are still getting bands of heavy squalls with winds I would estimate around 30-35 mph. Clouds are very low around 400-500 feet and wizzing by quite fast. You can see the rotation of the storm by the direction and how the clouds are going by, quite neat to see.

Anyway not much more to report right now. Gosh, the bands of rain just keep coming one after another with just small breaks in between. Hopefully this won't be for too long as we had rain alot over the past few weeks and the low lying areas were already saturated. So too much rain may cause flooding in certain areas.

Before I go I would like to wish the people of the Mexico, Yucatan area the best of luck as Emily heads in your direction. I trust everyone has prepared and is safe as possible. May God bless you all !!! If there is anyone reading this site from this area, please do your best to keep us notified on your conditions.
Again our thoughts and prayers will be with you.

Until I get some visual news later to report on, I will close with "Have a great day".
Greetings to all from the "Happy and thankful Cayman Islands"
Peace and love

- Steady Rain
  • From: "ascend" <ascend at candw.ky>

In Savannah-Newlands we are experiencing farily steady light rainfall, with
some moderate-heavy squalls, but very little winds at this point. There is
some water settling in our front yard but I don't really see any
leaves/branches strewn around, and everything else seems intact!

Around 6:00 a.m. I received a call that said that the water settling out by
what used to be the Tall Tree was sea (salt) water!! But I don't have any
official confirmation on that. That would mean that the waves broke above
Pedro point and came down Pedro Road!

We still have electricity, but the cloud coverage is obviously more intense
now as we have no reception on the satellite (at least not at our house).

I just read at the noaa site that our hurricane warning has been downgraded
to a tropical storm warning. So, I guess the worst has past, and weather
conditions will improve throughout the day.

Thanks to everyone who checked in and offered their prayers and support.

As Emily brushes by us on the South, heavy rains, wind, and fairly big seas pound Northwest Point in West Bay...this image was taken right off the back porch about 20 minutes ago....started over to Dolphin Point  but the rain drove me back inside. We are thankful the storm has passed us by, as remains of Ivan still lay in giant piles....Thanks to the folks at the Water Company and C.U.C. for keeping the water and power on at all times...We'll be heading out shortly to access the conditions around the neighborhood, as soon as the downpour lets up...

.... Don't know why we don't have power there seems to be no apparent
reason. Don't know if its island wide or just us.
Its raining a little windy and that's it - after all that prep

You know what they say?no news is good news.  And that?s certainly all we have to report this morning?no news.  We set our alarm for 5:00am to drive back over to Point of Sand and try and get a pic at daybreak of the worst part.  But there was no worst part.  Yeah!  As mentioned on the board there was a tiny jog and Emily went even further west yet.  And when we were scheduled to be the closest to Emily, the Sister Islands weren?t even inside the outer loop of the wind fields on the storm track sites anymore.  We had a small amount of wind during the night and the tiniest bit of rain.  Not even any storm surge yet.

Still not looking good for Cozumel and Cancun, though.

Forgot to mention that it seems that Emily over the past 2-3 hours actually made a jog to a more West bound heading as it has been passing south of Grand Cayman, This is the way it appears on the Goes Floater 1 "Loop".

Her main area of circulation appears to be getting larger and although I can't get a confirmation, from all the data I can view, I would guess she has actually intensified some.

I guess the "Recon Hunters" will verify her status early after daybreak.

Hello again,

Between the area of 3:00 am to present (4:30 am), we have been getting increasing winds and now heavy downpours of rain. It is very difficult to estimate the winds as it is so dark, but I would say we are getting a steady 60 mph winds and higher in rain squalls.

During the heavy downpours winds are very gusty and just from my carport door which faces west, trees are taking alot of beating around even though they are still fairly bear since Ivan. I have alot of palm trees on my property visual from this area and they are bending quite a bit toward the west in these high gusts.

Electricity is still on with no fluctuations (good sign) and so far around my area here as far as I can see all seems to be going okay. I don't expect much to change between now and daybreak, just the continued same conditions.

I will report next closer to daybreak, however if anything arises worth mentioning before, I will try to get it out to you.

All summed up, I think all should be generally well all around.

The windy is consistently stronger, and the gusts are quite powerful right
now. Enough to push back open the front door after I stepped back inside
from the front porch. We have NOT gotten a lot of rain here in Savannah
Newlands. It is drizzling out there because I can feel the drops of water
get pushed at me by the wind when I step out on to the porch.

Our water did go off earlier, I think around 11:00 pm but we still have
power and TV! This is really surprising considering with regular cloudiness
we will get no reception from the satellite for a while!

I actually went to sleep for awhile, but my husband has turned this into a
movie watching marathon - all in all, I guess I'll say '2 o'clock & all is
well'. Hope everyone else in Cayman is doing well too.

Read some of the other posts and thought (yeah, running water!)… but not where I am (South Sound / Old Crewe Road). No biggie.

No rain here yet either. Winds around 25-30kts if I was to guess (I went outside a few minutes ago to get an idea).

Really should sleep, put as the winds should be on us in an hour or two, will probably stay up until we are in the middle of it so I can gauge if we are going to get any storm surge (satellite imagery seems to indicate that wind won’t be a problem.. if 65-75mph winds are a problem, we need a better building code!)

All the best to everyone !

Just stuck my head out, and it's really blowing here in Northwest Point,
I am amazed at the noises wind can make,
its awesome.
No rain, as other's have reported as well,
a few rumbles here and there, but no lightening that I have seen.
It's hard to be too accurate when you are using the 2" gap between the plywood as your window,
but it seems to be just huge gusts thus far.
I am actually getting where I think I might sleep. I did not think this would happen.
I too have flashlights stratigically positioned around the house,
6volt powered lamps, touch-on battery operated discs...and so it goes.
The reports still sound somewhat hopeful,
she edges higher toward us slightly, but as she moves so quickly and is pretty compact, she won;won't have time or span to really clobber us, or, so it seems.
Will check back tomorrow.

Hello all,

Today was a beautiful sunny day on Grand Cayman, a perfect day for the beach, but that was out of the question.  With hurricane Emily forecast to affect the island later tonight, last minute preparations had to be completed.

The winds have begun to increase here where I live, (on Crewe Road on the south side of the airport) I would guess 25- 30mph with higher gusts. (My weather station fell victim to Ivan last year and I have not decided on the replacement.  Any recommendations?   Skies are overcast with high level clouds.  Just stepped outside and the clouds are looking 'thicker', and a few drops of rain hit me. I saw some lightening in the distance earlier on. The winds should increase steadily throughout the night.
I took some time this afternoon to take some photos of the "surf spot" at South Sound, South West Point, and found surfers taking advantage of the wave conditions. I have attached some here.
With the memory of all the flooding that took place during Ivan, many people chose to relocate their vehicles to higher ground.  (see pics).

CUC our power supplier says they will keep the power flowing as long as they can.  Hopefully they will not have to cut the power.

Well, let's see what Emily has in store for us.  Have a good night.

William

- 10:30 pm Update Grand Cayman
  • From: Chris McTaggart <cmctagga at candw.ky>
  • Date: Sat, 16 Jul 2005 23:04:52 -0500
Hi Everyone,

Just a quick update on current conditions here in Grand Cayman.
Winds are now starting to increase slowly and are about 35 - 40 mph. No rain yet but do expect it soon as lightning is now appearing to the NE - E - SE.

Not much of a heavy cloud cover yet as the DishNet and DirecTV are all still working :)

Looking at the images produced by the "Goes Storm Floater 1", looks like the North edge of the heavier area around the center of circulation will indeed just brush over Grand Cayman. I would expect winds to get up to around 80 mph and maybe higher especially in gusts. Looking at the distance on the chart I would guess the heaviest wind conditions we will experience will be between 2 to 4 a.m.

I plan to be up all night to monitor conditions so I will report on it quit quickly if the power stays on. CUC says they plan to keep the power on right through if possible and isolate areas individually that may give problems. I am very happy to hear that they are doing their best to stay powered, great service.

The Water Company shut off water around 7:30 pm, and this was to test the transfer system over to the standby. I think this usually takes them about 3 hours to complete but it appears that this went faster as water pressure returned to a more normal state around 9:00 pm.

Just in case my area looses power during the night, I will power up the generator at early light and get on the portable with a report.

Take care for now, going to monitor the outside a bit :)

- Windy
  • From: "ascend" <ascend at candw.ky>

The wind is beginning to pick up here. There hasn't been very much rain,
here, since earlier this afternoon but I've heard that it rained quite a lot
in George Town earlier.

We've had quite a bit of rain this past week, especially on Wednesday and
some low areas got quite a bit of water settling that day so I suspect that
any rain that comes with Emily may cause some 'flood' problems for these
areas. I am hoping not though.

Another pleasant surprise was that 1/2 hour ago while ago a full hour after
the water was supposed to be off we actually not only still had water but it
had more pressure than it did at 7:30 pm. I just checked and we STILL have
water now! :o) What a pleasant surprise!

That's it for now!

Ok, so I might be a little on the cynical side, but the acting police commissioner just made an announcement about the curfew and so forth, and warned Cayman's criminal element there will be a strict "Zero Tolerance" to crime during the hours of strongest storm conditions. We had to laugh, as a friend pointed out to us, what exactly is the percentage of tolerance when we are not experiencing storm conditions?
Winds picking up dramatically now, we can hear the branches against the roof and walls. (I guess I am not understating that, the baby actually just woke up after one hit rather hard.)
Guess that's the end of my report for now.
Those supportive emails from across the US and Canada are still pouring in.
Ok, I spoke too soon...a sound like a giant slap across the side of the house just woke our other son up.
Some rain is pelting the plywood shutters too. Since I started this email it is as if Emily woke up, too.

- Hurricane Emily Update - Water Going Off & Curfew
  • From: "ascend" <ascend at candw.ky>
  • Date: Sat, 16 Jul 2005 20:21:50 -0500
Hi everyone

Well the weather is still fair here, but the official announcement has been
made that as of 8:00 pm our time the Water Authority would be shutting off
the water. The water pressure has been down in the Savannah-Newlands area
since about 7:30 pm, I guess because everyone was doing their last minute
fill-ups. We have heard that barring any damage water service would be
resumed quite promptly.

There is a curfew from 11:00 pm tonight through 11:00 am tomorrow. And
police have warned that all looters would be treated harshly.

Well, I guess that's about it for now!

Cayman Islands - Emily a major threat to south coast
By NHC
Sat, 16 Jul 2005, 18:11

Key Message: All residents of Grand Cayman should have completed their
preparations for Hurricane Emily by this time and should be where they intend
to ride out the storm. If not, the NHC is urging you to finish preparations as
a matter of urgency.
Residents of the southern coasts and flood-prone areas of Grand Cayman in
particular are urged to secure their homes and move to a safer location either
with family or friends, or in a public shelter.
Battering waves of up to 12 feet can be expected along the southern coast
including East End, Bodden Town, Spotts and South Sound overnight, while some
beach erosion is anticipated along Seven Mile Beach and the northwest point
area of West Bay. While storm surge is not expected to be a major factor, it
could add to the flooding potential along the southern coast. Rainfall of up to
three inches is still expected and this could add even further to the
likelihood of flooding of low-laying areas.
The NHC is reminding residents of these areas that the main roads in the
districts are along the coast and could become impassible as the night wears
on. In addition, it is expected that the RCIP will announce a curfew for
tonight. People therefore need to get off the roads as quickly as possible.
All shelters except the East End Primary School are open and residents have
already begun to go there.
Tropical storm force winds are expected to commence at 10-11 o?clock tonight.
NHC Chairman Donovan Ebanks, wants the public to know that emergency rescue
crews will not be able to venture out to respond to calls for assistance once
tropical storm force winds begin as their own lives would be endangered. People
must ensure that they are in the safest location possible before the onset of
tropical storm force winds.
On its current path, the closest point of approach to Grand Cayman from Emily?s
centre will be 96 miles south-southwest of Grand Cayman, at about 4:00AM on
Sunday. At this point, winds are forecast to be around 64 mph, with higher
gusts reaching upwards of 70mph (minimal Category 1).
The Sister Islands are not forecast to experience any tropical storm force
winds, but can also expect showers, squalls, gusty winds and rough seas?also
accompanied by waves of 8-10 feet.
NHC advice to local population: The NHC continues to urge all interests to
closely monitor news reports.

Utilities: In addition to hastening remaining preparations, residents should be
aware that the Water Authority will be shutting down the water distribution
network at 8 p.m. Water supply will not return until tomorrow when the system
has passed and checks to the water mains have been made. The Cayman Water
Company will remain in operation for as long as possible, as will CUC.
Residents in areas supplied by the Water Authority should ensure they store
water to last at least through tomorrow.

NHC actions:
Shelters:
All shelters on Grand Cayman, except East End Primary School, are open.
Owen Roberts International Airport:
Will close at 7pm tonight (Saturday) and will reopen after the All Clear has
been issued. The Gerard Smith Airport on Cayman Brac will remain open as normal
until 9:00p.

Details of Weather System at 4:00PM, Saturday:
Longitude: 78.8 West
Latitude: 16.8 North
Speed of system and direction of movement: Moving WNW, near 18 MPH, and this
motion is expected to continue over the next 24 hours
Maximum sustained wind speed: Near 155mph with higher gusts
Size of system: Hurricane force winds extend out 60 miles from the centre, and
tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 150 miles.
Position: 138 miles SSE of Montego Bay
235 miles SSE of Grand Cayman
             212 SSE of Cayman Brac

Emily is expected to continue on its west-northwest track and to maintain its
speed for the next 24 hours. Wind direction will be out of the ENE initially,
veering to ESE by early Sunday morning. The south side of Grand Cayman can
expect to experience dangerous waves of 9-12 feet or higher, while rainfall of
around 3 inches is expected and may lead to some flooding in low-lying areas.
The Meteorological Service forecasts that Grand Cayman will begin experiencing
cloudy conditions from late afternoon/early evening, progressing into showers
and a number of squalls, lasting through tomorrow. Tropical storm force winds
will be felt from just before midnight until mid-morning (10:00/11:00AM) on
Sunday.

Further information:
The NHC?s Emergency Operation Centre will be activated this evening at 8:00PM
and will be closely monitoring developments throughout the night. Residents
should stay tuned to local media for further updates.

Background:
The following Saffir/Simpson Hurricane Scale provides some rough guidance on
what to expect for each category:
Category 1 74-95 mph, storm surge of 4-5ft.
Category 2 96-110 mph, 6-8 ft.
Category 3 111-130 mph, 9-12 ft.
Category 4 131-155 mph, 13-18 ft.
Category 5 greater than 155 mph, 18+ft.

Storm Advisories
Cayman?s National Hurricane Committee issues a series of advisories when a
tropical storm or hurricane enters the area.
Watch: a tropical storm or hurricane could strike within 36 hours.
Warning: a tropical storm or hurricane could strike within 24 hours. It remains
in effect until the storm has passed or is no longer a threat
All Clear: This means the storm is no longer a threat, but residents know that
this doesn?t mean the danger is past. If a ?Proclamation of Emergency? has
been issued, an ?All Clear? does not affect this proclamation.

Good evening from Little Cayman.  We drove up to Point of Sand on the far east end of the south side of Little Cayman to watch Emily?s arrival.  Not as much to take pictures of this time as Emily?s understated elegance seemed to turn the sky instantly gray without the great fanfare of the Dennis storm clouds.  At around 6:00pm the wind had just picked up enough to bend the trees and the sand was really stinging our legs.  The worst of the storm isn?t due until the wee hours in the morning with storm surge, and greater amounts of rain than Dennis, continuing through the day tomorrow.  However, the tide is already extra high and for those familiar with Point of Sand, the waves were already lapping at the feet of the gazebo.

On its current path, the closest point of approach to Grand Cayman from Emily?s centre will be 96 miles south-southwest of Grand Cayman, at about 4:00AM on Sunday. At this point, winds are forecast to be around 64 mph, with higher gusts reaching upwards of 70mph (minimal Category 1).

The Sister Islands are not forecast to experience any tropical storm force winds, but can also expect showers, squalls, gusty winds and rough seas?also accompanied by waves of 8-10 feet.

NHC advice to local population: The NHC continues to urge all interests to closely monitor news reports.

Utilities
In addition to hastening remaining preparations, residents should be aware that the Water Authority will be shutting down the water distribution network at 8 p.m. Water supply will not return until tomorrow when the system has passed and checks to the water mains have been made.

The Cayman Water Company will remain in operation for as long as possible, as will CUC. Residents in areas supplied by the Water Authority should ensure they store water to last at least through tomorrow.

NHC actions:
Shelters:
All shelters on Grand Cayman, except East End Primary School, are open.

Owen Roberts International Airport: Will close at 7pm tonight (Saturday) and will reopen after the All Clear has been issued. The Gerard Smith Airport on Cayman Brac will remain open as normal until 9:00p.

Emily is expected to continue on its w
by early Sunday morning. The south side of Grand Cayman can expect to experience dangerous waves of 9-12 feet or higher, while rainfall of around 3 inches is expected and may lead to some flooding in low-lying areas.

The Meteorological Service forecasts that Grand Cayman will begin experiencing cloudy conditions from late afternoon/early evening, progressing into showers and a number of squalls, lasting through tomorrow. Tropical storm force winds will be felt from just before midnight until mid-morning (10:00/11:00AM) on Sunday.

Further information:
The NHC?s Emergency Operation Centre will be activated this evening at 8:00PM and will be closely monitoring developments throughout the night. Residents should stay tuned to local media for further updates.

Storm Advisories
Cayman?s National Hurricane Committee issues a series of advisories when a tropical storm or hurricane enters the area.
Watch: a tropical storm or hurricane could strike within 36 hours.
Warning: a tropical storm or hurricane could strike within 24 hours. It remains in effect until the storm has passed or is no longer a threat
All Clear: This means the storm is no longer a threat, but residents know that this doesn?t mean the danger is past. If a ?Proclamation of Emergency? has been issued, an ?All Clear? does not affect this proclamation.

The National Hurricane Committee website has more information. Go to www.gov.ky and click link to Storm Advisories and Hurricane Preparedness.

- nice sunset
  • From: "Jennifer" <jengrant at candw.ky>

I just asked my husband what it is doing out there, and he said, "well, looks like a nice sunset."
It's true. The sky is sort of mauve, the trees are dancing in the moderately-stronger-than-usual breeze; if I were not completely on edge from all the weather watching, I would hardly know anything is wrong. I did notice there are no birds chirping and the jungle behind our house that is usually home to a dozen parrots this time of night is eerily silent. (it's not really a jungle, just a massive overgrown area that we call a jungle)(Just in case you have never been here.) That, and THERE ARE NO CHICKENS ANYWHERE!!! If you have been here, you know that THAT in itself is a true testimony to the power of weather.
Emily seems to be keeping to her course and is still a strong 4, gusting to a 5. It's an ordinary evening in our house. The kids are fed and bathed, my husband is flaked out on the couch watching NASCAR (or whatever) and I am on the computer. What IS different tonight is I am overwhelmed by the number of responses my 3pm report garnered. There are so many people sending prayers and support and comic relief, it's truly awesome. I cannot thank you enough, you who have connected so personally with me and my family. I am so grateful.
No word on curfews or any such regulations, but we will keep you posted. As for grumpy reporters, we are not all angry at those people who left the Island. People make choices for many reasons, most of which we will never be privy to. As for our little clan, we are staying positive and I might even wheedle my way into a game much hated by my husband -- a game of Scrabble.

I’m sure all interested parties have read the 5pm EDT advisory, which indicates TS force winds and a possibility of 50mph plus winds. Closest point of approach about 95 miles from GCM at around 4-5am.

Gert was supposed to fly in to stay with us at The Reef today, but visitor arrivals were stopped today. He was hoping to reschedule to Sunday, but Cayman Airways has cancelled their Houston flight from Sunday (so as to ferry more people back to Cayman from MIA / FLL). I’m trying to think of a creative way to get Gert and his family to Cayman by Monday or Tuesday, any ideas welcome.

Radio Cayman news at 6pm reports that TS winds should start around 11pm through mid morning. Fred Sambula (our head weather guy in Cayman) expects sustained winds around 60mph, with gusts up to 75mph.

There will be a curfew put in place as a precautionary measure from 11pm to 11am.

CUC is hoping to keep the power running overnight, but if there is a fault, the line crews will not go out as long as TS winds are in force, so we could get power outages in some areas.

I’m hoping that the power and water are not switched off, or, if they are, that they get switched back on by mid morning tomorrow…. Monty may have a once in a lifetime chance to win the Open J Got to keep a sense of humour !

It is 5 pm, just came back from getting diesel for the generator - which I
hope we do not have to use!!!
It is getting cloudy, it is a little breezy, but no rain.
During my drive, all homes were shuttered and they were still working on
some. The gas station was not busy. So I think all are prepared as much as
can be. So we will see what the next hours bring. Donna

Well its beginning to get a little darker and cloudy but with sunny bits
and the sea is getting a little choppy & its getting breezier.

We have decided to stay home and not go into the office unless it gets very
scary. According to the reports its only tropical storm winds so just
keeping fingers crossed that it will stay that way. Just hope that there is
not a surge but we have siliconed the sliding doors beachside, rolled up
the rugs etc. So think we are prepared. Hope they don't need to turn off
the power.

Why is it that storms only seem to happen at weekends and during the night!

Back to watching the weather channell and checking all the hurricane
websites

Take care everyone

Hello Everyone......

This is my first posting since Ivan.  This site was a lifesaver for many of us around the globe during Ivan.  I got    e-mails from people as far as Israel and Italy wishing us well and saying last minute prayers.

I had hoped to meet Gert and the other hurricane correspondents tomorrow at the Royal Reef, but it seems mother nature had a different plan.  Maybe some other time, not during hurricane season :-)

I can't believe how early this season has begun !  Makes me a little nervous about what we have in store in the next couple of months !

I think my greatest concern at the moment, is if we get hit like we did with Ivan with so many people on the island it is going to be utter chaos, the crime god forbid will be out of control !  We can't control the crime at the moment, what will we do in a state of emergency.

Enough of my worrying........

It looks like we are going to be lucky and miss the brunt of Emily...although I do expect us to get a lot of rain.  But you just never know until the last minute with these storms, I remember I was saying the same thing about Ivan, maybe I will just stay quiet for now :-)

Right now there is a little wind in the Newlands area.  We are all prepared, boarded up and ready for whatever comes our way.  Some restaurants are still open, my sister has left to get us some food at Country Western.  So now we sit and wait........

I will post again later.

Take care everyone and be safe.

Nicole

Chelsea Here.

As of 2 p.m. AST, Hurricane Em was packing winds of 155 mph...traveling WNW at 18 mph.  Pressure continues to drop...meaning it's getting stronger.
We had a brief shower earlier in the afternoon.  Also, power flickered off for about a sec.  Searched around for my wireless internet card....laptop's ready to go, if need be.

Haven't been outside of Prospect all day.  My sister went to the store at 5:30 this morning....and there was already a line starting to form.  You would think with all the extra flights leaving here, the crowds wouldn't be so bad.  Just goes to show...we are overpopulated.  Maybe the people who fleed should stay whereever it is there going.

I dunno...people who pick up and leave just bother me.  If it's for a very good reason, ok...but if you leave every time there's a storm, your house is unprotected (from thieves, at least).  With all the recent robberies going on, I'd rather ride out a hurricane and know 100% that no one's gonna mess with my stuff.

I'm just cranky.  Gonna take pics as it gets darker.  Right now, it's overcast...no wind at all.  Boarded up the front door, front windows, side windows that got blown out last time, and strapped down the air conditioner units and gas tank.  We're ready for Em!!

I love my island!!!

New to the Hurricane report "team", I am writing with my poor mother in mind, who I know is watching Emily as closely as we are. She and my son's God mother were my greatest resources during Ivan, as they relayed the information they got from this site to me via phone. It was odd, my mom is in Eastern Canada, and knew more about what was going on here than I did. Hard to tell what's what when all you know is what you can hear thru the walls and plywood.

Anyway, its 2:50pm, our time, and the Tropical Report just ended. I swear, before moving here I never even knew there WAS a weather channel, now it's a part of life 6 months of the year. Anyway, Emily is going between a high 4 and low 5 in category. Thus far, it's still pretty calm here, the weather that is, certainly not the people. As it stands, we are not in the direct path of her eye, but "we will get some weather." (my husband just said that, can you imagine? I was like, "no s*!%t.")

People overall seem to be pretty well prepared, certainly I have never taken the season so seriously. I guess after Ivan, none of us that were here will ever take the idea of a major storm lightly. Many of our friends have evacuated, and staying was not a decision that came lightly. I guess we sort of see it as a situation of, If we live here, we live here, for better for worse. Not that I won't pack my babies up in a second if the post-storm conditions are anything like we saw 10 months ago. It's hard to find the balance between reality and hysteria, but all I can say to worried friends and families, is that people are being more careful with their plans for shelter, supplies and communication than ever before. Not that Ivan is the standard by which we are setting our gauge, but we weathered him (no pun intended) and we are as ready as we can be now. Perhaps the Dennis scare of last week was actually an excellent "fire drill" for us. I know it gave my husband and I the kick we needed to get our shutters ready and our larder full. (including a few indulgences that are ONLY permitted during storm conditions -- I HIGHLY recommend the Pepperidge Farm soft baked dark chocolate cookies, instant nerve de-janglers...)

When reading the guidelines, or suggestions for these reports, I realized I might not have much to offer in the way of an interesting read for those trying to glean info. I guess I just want those off Island who rely so heavily on information about their loved ones in this situation, that we are pulling together, the phone lines are buzzing as we check on eachother and remind eachother of any essentials that might have been forgotten, and to have faith.

Hang in there Mom, we are going to be fine.

Hi

I'm not one of storm carib's correspondents, but I am in the Cayman Islands.
Just thought I'd pass along since the Cayman correspondents have been a bit
quiet recently (probably finalizing preparations)

The day started out beautifully, but now the sky is getting increasingly
dark. In Savannah, where I am, we had a brief but heavy shower a little
while ago. There is some intermittent thunder.

The airport on GCM will remain open until 7:00 pm tonight.

There is talk of a curfew being imposed but no final decision will be made
until after the National Hurricane Committee meets this afternoon at 4:30
p.m.

One shelter in each district will open shortly.

There is no firm plan yet for water or electric service to be disrupted and
they have advised that they will give about 2 hours notice before any action
is taken.

Overall, I think everyone is cautiously optimistic and are quite prepared.

Cheers
~Jacki~

- Grand Cayman - Emily approaches

Good Morning from Grand Cayman.

This morning of course is another bright and sunny morning with light winds from the south-east. Emily is now a very strong and compact Category 4 storm as she now gets into the warmest water in the Caribbean and will remain in it all the way to the Yucatan. Emily is expected to past south of Grand Cayman but with the north quadrant passing over us I do expect alot of rain and near Hurricane force winds if in fact she remains on her present track.

I do however personally anticipate that Emily over the course of the next 24 hours will make a jog more to the North-west as it passes south of Jamaica on its way for Cayman. Also I expect her to reach very close to Cat 5 before reaching the Yucatan. Again this is just my personal opinion and not any part of an official forecast, and hopefully I am wrong.

I am not flying, so I am planning on doing a periodic update as Emily approaches and hopefully be able to keep the site up to date as the weather conditions increase. Hopefully the power does not go off too early, but I do have my generator and laptop all ready to power up if it does.

Everyone here in Grand Cayman seems to have started to prepare early and alot of people have also left the Island on many scheduled, charter and extra section flights bound for America and even Canada. My company Cayman Airways has once again provided every opportunity for residents and visitors a way to travel out of Grand Cayman by adding all the flights necessary for the past 2 days and is still doing so today. Remember alot of homes, apartments, condos and business buildings are still under construction from the damage "Ivan" left us with last year.

As I close this message, just a quick note to local residents that may view this site. Yes, Emily is forecasted to past south of Cayman, but do not let that make you relax your guard. there is still plenty time that Emily can make changes, and just even a slight change can make a vast difference.

Hopefully I will be able to keep the Cayman post updated throughout the passage, as I know this site is a great way for family and friends on the outside to know what is happening.

Have a great day.

of my head now.....

At 10pm local she's back to Cat 4, a quick transition, though still trucking
along at 18mph. Let's hope she goes back down to a 2 as quickly.

Track does differ from Ivan, and the pressure is till in a higher range so
fingers still crossed for a quick near miss only.

Hurricane Denis made sure we are all well prepared for Emily. As it seems to be a tempermental storm changing its mind every time you look at the next update.

Businesses are closing at varied times to allow staff time to collect any forgotten supplies. Some are chosing to evacuate with the memory of Ivan's destruction still fresh in thier minds... and others have concerns of security should the storm be strong enough to cut power for extended periods of time. Crime has been rising steadily in Grand Cayman since Ivan and many are sure to try and take advantage of an already bad situation.

We continue to watch carefully chosing to stay on island...unsure as of yet if it will be in our own home or on higher ground. (it sure would be sad to see all those brand new appliances flooded out again) For now knowing we are ready there isn't much to do but watch and wait.

out people as well as Cayman Airways have put on extra planes. All flights I
hear are totally booked. Everyone is looking for high ground to park their
cars!!! And of course praying that she keeps on the path for the eye to pass
south of us - AND to keep moving at the the fast forward speed. I will be
shutting down my office and home to secure it. Will keep in touch from home
and hopefully through the storm. Donna

This is posted by the National Hurricane Committee at www.gov.ky

Advisory
NHC: Watch Continues
15-JUL-2005
NHC: WATCH CONTINUES
Issued: 7:00 a.m., Friday, 15 June.

The National Hurricane Committee advises that the Hurricane Watch for the Cayman Islands continues this morning and anticipates that the Watch will be upgraded to a Hurricane Warning by 1:00pm today. On its current path, Hurricane Emily, now Category 4, is still expected to pass within close proximity to the south of the Cayman Islands this weekend.

NHC advice to local population: All interests should be closely tracking reports on the progress of Hurricane Emily.

'The NHC is closely monitoring the storm and so far it is adhering to projections, said Chairman Donnie Ebanks. This system still poses a possible threat to the Cayman Islands, particularly Grand Cayman. Everyone should therefore continue to monitor the track of Hurricane Emily and business and property owners should make productive use of today in making their preparations.'

NHC actions: The NHC has put all committee chairmen on alert to begin preparations to implement arrangements as necessary today. It is expected that PWD will be shuttering government buildings today.

Details of Weather System:
Longitude: 69.2. W
Latitude: 13.9 N
Speed of system and direction of movement: Moving WNW, near 20 MPH
Maximum sustained wind speed: 135 mph with higher gusts.

AT 5 AM AST...0900Z...THE CENTER OF HURRICANE EMILY WAS LOCATED NEAR
LATITUDE 13.9 NORTH... LONGITUDE 69.2 WEST OR ABOUT 580 MILES
EAST-SOUTHEAST OF KINGSTON JAMAICA.

EMILY IS MOVING TOWARD THE WEST-NORTHWEST NEAR 20 MPH...32 KM/HR...
AND THIS GENERAL MOTION IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE FOR THE NEXT 24
HOURS.

Further information:
The NHC will meet at 10:30am to consider the 10:00am advisory from Miamis National Hurricane Centre. The next NHC bulletin will be issued around lunchtime.

Background:
This is the second threat for the Cayman Islands since the hurricane season commenced on 1 June 2005. On its northerly track, Hurricane Dennis bypassed the Cayman Islands a week ago

Weather systems forming at lower latitudes, such as Emily, are usually of more substantial threat to the Cayman Islands.

  • Date: Thu, 14 Jul 2005 23:53:00 -0400
The Cayman Islands has been put on hurricane watch as of 11 pm tonight,
(Thursday) however, it does seem that the storm is moving in a more
westerly direction.

On its current path, Hurricane Emily is expected to pass close to the south
of the Cayman Islands Saturday. However, once it gets into open waters
anything can happen.

Emily is now a Category Three Hurricane, and some intensification is
expected over the next 24 hours, taking Emily to Category Four.

The high pressure area in the vicinity of the Cayman Islands continues to
raise expectations that Emily will continue on a more southerly course.
However, with Emily's anticipated intensification into a dangerous Category
4 Hurricane, this weather system is a major threat to the Cayman Islands and
there is always potential for change.

NHC advice to local population: The NHC this evening urged all interests to
closely monitor news reports. Residents and businesses have been urged to
begin planning for preparations, which should be in process tomorrow (Friday
morning, 15th.).

In fact people have already started boarding up their homes - just in case -
and everyone is dreading another Ivan!

- Cayman Islands set to go on early alert for Hurricane Emily
  • From: CDERA Information Unit <webmaster at cdera.org>
  • Date: 14 Jul 2005 23:36:59 -0000
The following statement was issued by the National Hurricane Committee of the
Cayman Islands

Cayman Islands: Set to declare early alert for Hurricane Emily
By NHC, Cayman Islands
Thu, 14 Jul 2005, 17:25

Key Message: At its 4:30 meeting this afternoon the National Hurricane
Committee (nhc) indicated that on its current path Hurricane Emily is expected
to pass within close proximity to south of the Cayman Islands this weekend. As
a result the Cayman Islands will be placed on Hurricane Alert at 7 p.m. this
evening and a Hurricane Watch will be issued at 10 p.m.

NHC advice to local population: All interests should be closely monitoring
this system. Residents and businesses are urged to begin planning for
preparations, which should be in process tomorrow (Friday morning).

The outer bands of the system are currently projected to start affecting the
Cayman Islands on Saturday morning. No one should therefore assume that all
preparations can be left until Saturday over the course of which weather
conditions can be expected to deteriorate.

?It is important that everyone gives this system the attention and respect that
it clearly warrants. All businesses should ensure that preparations are given
priority tomorrow morning so that whenever businesses close, all preparations
are complete. At the same time, employers should ensure that employees are
given opportunity to attend to personal arrangements if necessary. Coming so
close on the heels of the preparations for Hurricane Dennis, it should be quite
feasible for most businesses to meet both of these important obligations and
still maintain normal operating hours tomorrow (Friday),? said Chairman Donnie
Ebanks.

NHC actions: The NHC has put all committee chairmen on alert to begin
preparations to implement arrangements as necessary on Friday. It is expected
that PWD will commence shuttering of Government Buildings Friday.

Senior Manager for the Cayman Islands Meteorological Service Fred Sambula said
that a high pressure area in the vicinity of the Cayman Islands is an
indication that the system will likely continue to steer a more southerly
course. However, as the system comes into our area the warmer seas are
expected to cause intensification into possibly a Category Four Hurricane.
From that point of view, Hurricane Emily is a major threat to the Cayman
Islands.

Mr. Sambula said, however, that at this stage we must be prepared for change,
and urged that all interests closely monitor weather reports.

Details of Weather System:

Longitude: 65.9. W degrees
Latitude: 13.3 N
Speed of system and direction of movement: Moving WNW, at 21 MPH
Maximum sustained wind speed: 115 mph
Proximity: the system is currently 1,106 miles south east of Grand Cayman.

Further information:
The NHC will issue its next update at shortly before 7 p.m. tonight.

Background:
This is the second threat for the Cayman Islands since the hurricane season
commenced on 1 June 2005. Hurricane Dennis, fortunately for the Cayman
Islands, bypassed the Cayman Islands, taking a northerly track. Weather systems
forming at lower latitudes, such as Emily, are usually of more substantial
threat to the Cayman Islands.

Gert, not sure about drinks on Sunday, but, I have the four wheel drive all gassed up and ready for the trek to the other side!!!

Pressure in eye wall continues to drop...strengthening is likely.

Weather here now is very good....sun's out, no wind whatsoever.

No need for people to worry....just keep watching the progression of this storm.  Instead of panicking (like with Dennis), monitor the storm.  You should have a hurricane stockpile of necessities anyway.  Don't wait to the last minute....plan ahead.

Our generators are standing by, if need be.

Always be prepared.

God Bless.

It's been overcast most of the day, but.....SOOO HUMID!!

I've taken some pictures, but I can't locate my cord to store the images onto my computer.  But I'm sure there will be more hurricanes and overcasts skies to take pictures of.  No doubt.
UCCI cancelled all tests scheduled for today...other than that, it was pretty much the same old same here on G. Cayman.

Hopefully, Dennis will weaken some as it heads towards Florida.  God knows they don't need anymore hurricanes coming their way.

My prayers are with Cuba and the other countries that are taking the brunt of Dennis.

We have been experiencing more rain and winds today then we did yesterday. The rings of the storm seem have been kicking up the seas and the rain comes in buckets and we are teased with a bit of sun and it all starts again. It was great to see that since Ivan many people on the island took the advisories seriously and I do believe we were better prepared then we ever have been. I just hope that people don’t drop their guard on the next warning. We were VERY lucky. I pray for all those in Cuba and Florida. If this is any indication we are in for a very busy and unforgiving hurricane season.

God Bless,

- Wrap-up from Little Cayman
  • From: Gentle Enigma <gentle_enigma at yahoo.com>
  • Date: Fri, 8 Jul 2005 15:04:45 -0700 (PDT)

Most of the effects of Dennis are now well past Little Cayman.  As the morning progressed the waves got taller and taller except that here on the North Side we have reef protection so the largest waves broke way out on the reef and then we had swells and smaller waves on the shore.  However, due to the size of the waves breaking out on the reef we still had tremendous amounts of water coming ashore.  Usually, we have about a foot or two of pylon showing beneath our dock.  Today, the waves were rolling over the top of the dock, up our sidewalk, up the ironshore beach, and up our back yard to the bottom of our seawall which is about 50 feet from the usual water?s edge.  We have globs of seaweed on the first few steps up the seawall.  I?m not sure about the rest of the island, but surprisingly, throughout the storm we have had very little rain on the North Side.

No real damage to speak of except for losing a couple of planks from the dock and a 150 pound piece of concrete floated away as if it were a feather.  One of our neighbors suffered some damage to his dock as well and the road is blocked in one place due to debris brought over the road by storm surge.

The rest of Little Cayman is also doing well and we heard that there were only about a dozen folks who made use of the hurricane shelter last night.

This was my first hurricane and it is certainly an unsettling combination of feelings to be both thankful that the Cayman Islands fared so well this time around, while mourning the losses of those who did not, and worse yet, continuing to watch the news with anxious trepidation on behalf of those who are yet in its path.

After a fairly mild night on Little Cayman us Northsiders are finally starting to get a bit of wind and water this morning.  No reports yet from the South Side.  My guess is they eventually realized we weren?t going to be hit very hard after all and are all still gratefully sound asleep.  The wind gusts at the moment seem to be topping out at about 43 mph so again, the Sister Islands fared much better than many thought.  We haven?t had much rain at all in the wee hours but did just now get about a five-minute shower.  Power and phones are all up and running.

Good Morning All,

Grand Cayman this morning is extremely calm weather wise. High overcast with scattered thunderstorms to NE - E - thru SE. Winds are completly calm.

Early this morning around 3 a.m. heavy thunderstorms rolled in with heavy rain, lightning, and thunder. This lasted for about an hour or two at the most. Just the result of a portion of the outer bands according to the satellite image around the same time as I viewed it.

I am heading to Orlando this morning at 10:50 a.m. and plan to carry my camera in hopes to get a picture of Dennis from the leading edge view at 37,000 ft. Looks like I will route just west of Cayo Largo on the way up to Orlando, but may have to go further west on the return flight, over Havanna. If I do get a photo, I will post when I return to Grand Cayman and also let you know travel conditions.

By the post from Joyce Mock in Little Cayman, sounds like the Sister Islands are fearing quite well to which we are all happy for. Nice photo posted by Joyce of the first outer band.

Take care,
Captain Chris McTaggart

When we went to bed, it looked like even the Sister Islands were pretty much out of the loop for the brunt of Dennis and now it?s 2:45am and I just got up to check on things and all is still well and mostly quiet.  So quiet, in fact, that our internet satellite is still up and running and all I can hear is a slight whistle of moderate wind outside but not enough to even rattle the hurricane shutters or make any noise at all on the house, so not bad at all.  And not a spec of rain at the moment either.

Just checked the maps again and the eye of Dennis appears to be exactly straight east of us right now and it isn?t causing much worry at all at the moment.  We could still get some wind, rain and storm surge (forecast mentioned some waves we haven't gotten yet) as Dennis? eye rolls a bit further past us and we get the aftermath, but it looks like we hopefully won?t be getting hit as hard as we thought.

So far so good!

Grand Cayman quiet, supermarkets closed early, though not the

bands of rain but little wind. A few things cancelled but the radio is

- Initial "Dennis" Observations from Little Cayman
  • From: Gentle Enigma <gentle_enigma at yahoo.com>
  • Date: Thu, 7 Jul 2005 18:11:00 -0700 (PDT)

Reassured by various hurricane websites, we have chosen to ride out ?Dennis? at home.  We?re in a stilt house on the water on Mary?s Bay on the North Side towards the east end of the island.

At about 6:00pm we could see the front of the storm as it approached Little Cayman from the northeast.  You could literally see from one side of the storm to the other, stretched across the horizon.  A few minutes after 6:00pm the rain and wind came, arriving very suddenly.  The sea went from choppy to rough within seconds and there was still enough light to observe the curtains of rain being blown horizontally across the water.

The wind and rain only lasted a few minutes and things were calm again, except for spectacular lightening shows that appeared to be on the other side of Little Cayman and at sea.  Immediately following a large lightening strike our power went off but the great guys at Power & Light had us back up and rolling within 10 minutes.

So now all is quiet again except for light rain and lightening off in the distance.

Here on Grand Cayman - in the Omega Bay/Patrick's Islands area - the slight
wind has been out of the North. Just getting dark, heard some thunder in the
distance. Some believe we will not get to much from Dennis since he is
passing so far northeast of us. I heard government and probably most
businesses are going to be closed tomorrow. Although they announced, so I
was told, that Foster Food Fair and the gas stations will be open. So maybe
we are not going to get much rain. But I guess we will have to wait until
daybreak to find out - or at least until Dennis gets a little closer. I
believe all are ready for what ever we get. I guess next report will be
tomorrow morning unless something happens in the middle of the night. Cayman
Brac, as I see posted, will probably get more than Grand Cayman. So all you
in the Brac and Little Cayman - keep safe.

It is just after noon - most businesses are closing at 1pm and of course
schools were closed today. CAL is putting on extra flights to Miami today
and have not said what they will be doing tomorrow.
CUC states will not turn off power unless highwinds down lines and they will
be forced to shut down.
Even though we on Grand Cayman seem not to be in Dennis path, they are
saying we will have tropcial storm winds and of course a lot of rain.
I am preparing my office now to shut it down and get home to board up.
Had to go out on the road about 1 hour ago - everyone is on the road! So
much traffic. People are buying lumber to board up and of course the grocery
stores are packed as well as all the gas stations.
Sunny with a few clouds - just had a little rain - but this was just a small
patch of rain clouds, now sunny again.
More later

Dennis is now a strong Cat. 2, packing winds of 105 mph, still moving in a WNW direction, at about 15 mph.  The storm is now located 130 miles ESE of Jam.

If the storm continues on its WNW path, it (the eye) should stay well off shore of us (In Grand Cayman).

Weather now: Sun's out....not too cloudy.  Slight wind...seas are choppy.  Other than that, not much going on in Prospect.  Good kite weather....careful of those powerlines, though.

Schools are closed....except mine(UCCI)...how conveinient.  Finals are still scheduled.  No word on tomorrow's, though.

That's all.

Updated at 8 p.m.
Dennis is now barely a Cat. 1 hurricane, packing winds of 80mph...moving at about 13 mph in a WNW direction.  Located about 300 ESE of Jam.
Gas stations have been packed for most of the day...the grocery stores aren't any better.

Current weather: misquitoes were out early...never a good sign.  Didn't see the misquito plane/trucks out tonight.  It was hot and humid most of the day...as it is almost always.  Early evening was perfect for biking/running/jogging.

I'm always optimistic about these storms.  Hope for the best...expect the worst.
And here's to hoping it doesn't make landfall.

Either way, I'm not leaving.

Hate this waiting game - is he coming this way or that way.
In any case some people are preparing, at least with groceries. Just came
back from Fosters and the store is packed. I talked to someone in Cayman
Brac and they have started to board up and residents from Little Cayman are
being taken to Cayman Brac. As far as Grand Cayman - have not heard anything
about closures of businesses etc yet! Maybe later this afternoon there will
be an announcement.I know there are a lot of people who are not happy with a
hurricane so early, as just finished with repairs or still in the process.
Hopefully we will be spared on this one. Otherwise is it a sunny, light
breeze da. More later. Donna

Whooaa!!! Hold up a minute! we just got thru a few days of rain from arlene,  havn’t gotten the final total inches but I know it was over six inches and now it looks as Bret is forming up just south of Jamaica, Jamaica keep a look out and my fellow islanders pay care full attention, lets hope every one took heed of the comments made and notices posted about this season, I am sure this thing will be a depression by evening and possible storm by the AM.

I really don’t like to portray any pessimistic tendencies but we must be realistic!!!

After about a day and a half of consistent rain and overcast skies, weather in Cayman's starting to return to normal: humid and hot!  But...I love it!
In Prospect, there is considerable flooding along Marina and Prospect Drives.  Potholes are also posing a problem for motorists.
And please...all of you who have to drive down roads with flooding...please, please, please...be considerate of people walking or cyclists...you can splash them and not even realize.  Take care when driving through water on the roads.  Thank you!
A lot of roads are critically in need of repair.  And drainage needs to be looked into on some of them...the water can run of the roads and straight into people's yards.  Those living in especially low-lying areas don't need that.  Public Works really needs to address this.
Thank you.  God Bless you all!

Good Morning
This is our first test to hurricane season weather. It has been raining
since yesterday, with very strong winds at times in the squalls. Since
Arlene is directly west of us, hopefully we will start seeing some decrease
in rain soon. Although we need the rain, we do not need it in this amount.
Most schools are closed today. Some homes roofs are not ready yet for this
amount of rain. And other homes are finding some leaks. Hopefully tomorrow
the sun will shine and dry us out.

I left my home this morning with an umbrella that severed little purpose to the winds and rain that we have been experiencing since yesterday. I had to roll my pants to my knees to cross the parking lot! The low laying areas are flooded a few feet. The saddest part is to see those that still are repairing their roof with tarps that are rattling in the wind. There are still many homes that are under construction since Ivan. The weather has been unreasonably hot and the rain is appreciated but not this MUCH! It is nice to see a few leaves returning to their stripped branches though.

I pray the sunshine’s soon and that this is no sign of a potential season to come.
