Yesterday the weather was strange. It was very murky out..sort of hazy and humid..not a clear day at all. The wind was howling at night so the kids at Bonaire Windsurf Place put on a show before the Wed. night BBQ. Lots of fun. Now, the winds are howling and again, a gray day..

Bonaire has experience squalls, high winds, rain and wind shifts all day. The sky was black in some areas. I did my bi weekly hike up to the shrine at Sera Largu and was greeted by a HUGE monsoon like squall soaking me to the skin as I headed down the hill.  What weather!!

Should we be thanking La Nina for the 7 straight weeks of wind in the ABC's? There was a slight respite last week with lighter winds but wow, everyone is SO happy. If you need a wind fix, Bonaire is the place. Today in between my two sessions I captured some NICE shots of the Bonaire Team..wish I knew how to post...haa..

  • From: "Ann L. Phelan" <ann at bonairecaribbean.com>

The New Year started off with super winds for sailing on my 4.7 meter sail. I was one of the few on the water at 9:30 AM to catch the wind. The skies are filled with puffy clouds with plenty of sun for the tourists and divers.

According to www.bonairewebcams.com, we have had over 9" of rain since Nov. 2005. For me, a New Englander, I love the rain...but I know soon the season ends and drier conditions will prevail.

The container of fireworks arrived this week and it's rocking here on little Bonaire. You can legally buy almost EVERYTHING on every street corner of Bonaire. My 13 year old has her own little arsenal ready for tonight.

The business light off their Pagada's today (good luck for the New Year I think..can anyone lend info on this??) ...the streets will be lined in red paper soon...last night the sky was gray with smoke. There were some incredible fireworks displays as a prelude to tonight's events.  Around 11 PM the rains came and everyone ran home..it poured for close to 45 minutes.

Off to finish shopping and get ready for the arrival of the New Year...

Blessings to all...

- Happy Saturday
  • From: "Ann L. Phelan" <ann at bonairecaribbean.com>
  • Date: Sat, 10 Dec 2005 07:55:58 -0400

The sun is peeking out in Bonaire after another stormy night. The winds are much lighter this morning. Yesterday it was gusting to over 40 in Sorobon after dawn. I had an overpowered windsurf session on my 4.7 and was too tired to switch to my 4.2. I am aching after several great days of windsurfing. No complaints here..

My Starlet's full of holes so I know today will be another day of wet driving...HUGE puddles to negotiate all over Bonaire...

Stay warm all in the US. I saw the weather map on The Weather Channel and the entire country looks frigid..

We have had a day of torrential downpours and most recently some severe wind gusts. It was like a hurricane knocking over tables and plants at my house. I took off fast to the windsurf site, Sorobon for a quick session and was tossed thru my sail. The skies are dark and it's looking like more rain soon.

From www.meteo.an

Weather forecast for the ABC Islands valid until Thursday evening 18:00 AST.

Weather:
This afternoon: Partly cloudy, occasionally mostly cloudy with a few passing showers.
Tonight: Partly to mostly cloudy with a few more showers. Some of these could be locally heavy.
Thursday: Mostly cloudy with periods of showers and a risk of thunder at times. Some of the showers will be locally heavy.

Winds:
This afternoon through Thursday
: East to Northeast and gentle to fresh; force 3 to 5 ( 13 to 39 km/ hr, 7 to 21 knots). Mainly during daytime and in showers, occasionally strong to near gale force in gusts; force 6 to 7 (40 to 61 km/ hr, 22 to 33 knots).

Synopsis:
A mid and upper level disturbance was located Wednesday over the Southeastern Caribbean Area and was moving West. This system will cause a gradual increase in cloudiness and shower activity over our region during the next 24 hours. Especially on Thursday, some of these showers will be locally heavy and there is also a risk of thunder over some sections of our islands. In addition to the influence of this disturbance, the surface winds over our region are also expected to increase and especially in or near showers, these could briefly become gusty.

Sea Conditions: With expected wave heights between 1.5 to 2.5 meter (4 to 8 feet), our surrounding waters will be rather rough. Occupants of small craft and swimmers are therefore advised to take this into account and not to venture far from our shores.

For information on tropical cyclone Epsilon, please click on the » Cyclones link on your left.

Forecaster: A.R. Capello.

The next weather forecast  will be issued Wednesday at 21:00 AST (08/01:00 UTC).

- The humanity post Hurricane
  • From: "Ann L. Phelan" <ann at bonairecaribbean.com>
  • Date: Wed, 7 Sep 2005 10:54:58 -0400
Good day friends,

Many of us have been watching post hurricane reports for many years primarily from the islands. Now we are seeing the devastation and terrible tragedy unfolding in the Southern states in the US.

My question is, were there documented cases of rapes, snipers and the other horrific events being reported in the US media, post hurricane in Cayman or Grenada last year? Of course looting is problematic but what has happened in New Orleans is astounding. The entire US is appalled and watching in disbelief.

The US media barely covers Caribbean disaster so I must ask her in this forum, has ANYTHING remotely similiar even on a smaller scale ever happened in the Caribbean please? If you can point out any sources or resources, please do so.

Peace.

- Grey day/Sahara Dust?
  • From: "Ann L. Phelan" <ann at bonairewindsurfing.com>
  • Date: Sat, 6 Aug 2005 10:35:37 -0400
Good day from Windy Bonaire,

It is a cloudy day. I have used an entire box of tissues this week. Could it be the Sahara Dust?

Here is the local ABC island weather forecast (www.meteo.an):

Weather forecast for the ABC islands valid until Sunday midday 12:00 AST.

Weather:

Today: Clear to partly cloudy and hazy.
Tonight through tomorrow morning: Partly cloudy, occasionally mostly cloudy and generally dry.

Winds:
Today through Sunday midday:
Easterly and gentle to moderate; force 3 to 4 (13 to 30 km/hr, 7 to 16 knots). Mainly during daytime, occasionally fresh to possibly near gale force in gusts; force 5 to 7 (31 to 61 km/hr, 17 to 33 knots).

Synopsis:

The Southern Caribbean is being dominated by subsiding air at several levels of the atmosphere. This will maintain throughout the forecast period cloud cover low and showeractivity to a minimal. However, patches of high level clouds and the presence of Saharan dust in the atmosphere will give the sky a greyish tint during the daylight hours.

Tropical weather: Please click on the >> Cyclones link on the left edge of this page to read more about tropical storm Harvey and tropical depression Nine.

Sea conditions: The seas over the open waters in general will be between 1.0 and 2.0 meters (3 to 6 feet).

Bon tarde,

We had intermittent rain showers and squalls in between dead calm and hot sticky weather. A rumble of thunder was heard off and on..now calm again. Around 5 PM the stores were jammed and traffic was pretty heavy. I saw two car accidents, folks no doubt in a hurry to get things done.

Having lived in Antigua and see Hugo and Gilbert I would say folks in Bonaire do not react the same way obviously since hurricanes are few and far between down here...I pray we see minimal storm activity and our neighbors to the north the same..Am worried about Cayman and Jamaica..how much more can they take??

Sigh...

CYCLONE MESSAGE NO 5
INFORMATION ADVISORY NO 5
Date: July 13, 2005                   Time: 12 P.M.
.......Tropical Storm Emily continues West toward Southeastern Caribbean...........

SYSTEM  IDENTIFICATION: Tropical Storm Emily.

INTENSITY CATEGORY: Severe Tropical Storm.

CENTER LOCATION: 11.2N 58.1W or 360 km East Northeast of Trinidad.

LOCATION TIME: 11:00 A.M.

MAX WINDS NEAR CENTER:  50 KTS/ 60 MPH/ 95 KMH.

PRESENT MOVEMENT: towards the West or 270 degrees at 17 KTS/ 20 MPH or 32 KM/HR.

DISCUSSION: Tropical storm Emily is still continuing to follow a westward track and has not yet shown signs of taking  the predicted more northwesterly course. Consequently the latest forecast track has been moved considerably southward, bringing the storm closer to the ABC-islands. The expected intensity of Emily is now somewhat lower than the previous forecast but is still maintained as a strong category one hurricane when the system passes north of the ABC-islands.

Although with the present forecast track, storm winds remain north of the ABC-islands, there is considerable uncertainty with respect to the course Emily will take in the next 24 hours. It is still possible that the center will pass somewhat closer to our islands than is now predicted. If this is the case, it would mean that the ABC-islands may be affected by Tropical Storm conditions in the course of Thursday night. Even the possibility for hurricane conditions, although at the moment not very likely, cannot not be fully excluded.
Therefore we will await the developments during this afternoon and probably issue a WATCH this afternoon, and if necessary followed by a WARNING Thursday early morning or sooner if conditions warrant.

WATCHES/WARNINGS IN EFFECT: None at the moment, probably a WATCH will be issued later this afternoon.

Local authorities and residents are advised to continue monitoring the further progress of this weather system and to consider the possibility of a WARNING, which may warrant rapid precautionary actions.

I would love a report from Cuba. This storm looks like a doozy. Bonaire has big winds still and the direction is back to normal. Quiet tourist season.

There is little wind..the sea is like glass..wind reversal. It is strange to see KLM and all the other planes take off in the opposite direction. Light rain showers all day. Very muggy and still...eery weather prevails in Bonaire.

- Wind Reversal
  • From: "Ann L. Phelan" <ann at bonairewindsurfing.com>

As a follow up last night was crazy. Around 8 PM the winds picked up and switched to North. All the boats in the harbour were being tossed about. Many headed into Harbour Village to seek shelter and safety. One word, “Lenny” invokes fear here when that storm’s wind reversal caused MUCH damage to the island.

The entire coastline in town was filled with onlookers amazed at the wild sea and wind frenzy. At home my 6 cats were going ballistic. My dogs were antsy and itchy. Rains came and lasted much of the night off and on.

Today it is very still with the winds back to their original direction. All is calm.

The winds have shifted tonight and it’s howling. The boats are being tossed to and fro in Kralendijk harbour. Very odd and eery tonight.

Not much weather action in the Dutch Caribbean. Flew in from Jamaica under VERY cloudy wet skies. Turbulence and then calm as we headed into ABC island air space. Bonaire has moderate winds around 16 and a rather high humidity. Peace to all in the Caribbean today.

- Winds gone in Bonaire and a new storm with a new name

Hello everyone,

May I ask why we had a Tropical Storm and Hurricane, Adrian, in May and it was not part of the 2006 Hurricane name list? Was it because he came in BEFORE the season?? Hmm..well, Adrian, behave..it’s too early for storms.

Bonaire is into day 3 of BAD weather: hot, sticky, thunder, no wind..MISERABLE. Some parts of the island had heavy rains..We need a change in this oppressive weather pattern.

- Windless Bonaire

We are in day 3 of The Third Maduro and Curiel’s Bank Bonaire King of the Caribbean Windsurf Event and NO WIND. Yesterday was still with not a breathe of air. Someone said it was 96 degrees in the shade. The storm north of our island is sucking the wind and making for poor competition conditions.

Can anyone tell me what the track of this storm is and is it MOVING? Be gone storm, be gone.
