As if we didn't have enough rain last weekend when the TD sat over us for a whole day, dropping it's full load and causing severe damage by way of mudslides and flooding, we are now experiencing a further wave of very wet weather.   One of the schools has had to close because there is mud sliding down into the classrooms and the water table is so high that the ground is saturated and cannot take much more, the rivers are rushing and so are the waterfalls, wonderfuls sights for the tourists but a major worry for the Works Department to keep the water at bay - however, because of the rain, the island is really lush, it is not cold, and of course you can still swim in the rain!!!!!

Well we may have had a quiet season in Grenada but oh have we got the rain now - so sorry for the tourists who are trying to get some sun, diving and snorkelling - heavy rain here ALL day - no let up at all - four and a half inches recorded in Calivigny last night - numerous landslides, fallen trees and swollen rivers - doesn't look like we are to be spared for the next couple of days with the exception and one small patch which may give us half a day - good for the island's foliage but not good for tourism but it seems as though all the islands are getting the same treatment - sorry for those guys in Mexico who took Kenna earlier today - haven't seen any reports of any damage but hope that it wasn't too bad for them - well time to put the wellies and souwester on and take the dog out for a splash - good night all.

Oh boy is it raining here, now I'm not saying its not welcome, to store for the dry season but we have a lake on the terrace of the bar, a lake behind the kitchen and the road is a river!!!!!  Thunder and lightning as well to add to the fun - seems as though we are going to out of this season with a bank, don't think a night has gone by for a week without a thunderstorm - on another note, what is the situation on the other islands with dengue please?

Thanks to Prof Crane, here on Grenada we send all our best wishes to you Gert on your happy event, and of course to the proud mother of those lovely babies (Prof Crane seemed to think that amongst all the other wonderful work you do for us all on the islands that you had also "had" the twins) - will we have pictures posted pleeeeaaaaaaase!!!  Grenada is overcast today, not much breeze and threatening showers - am going to check the weather sites now, was all of a flummox over the babies and was checking the reports from our friends up islands to ensure everyone was okay - will post again later if anything significant to report

  • From: "Gallery Bar & Grill (Penny & Keith)" <gallery AT caribsurf.com>
  • Date: Tue, 24 Sep 2002 09:39:56 -0400 (Eastern Daylight Time)
I understand from one of the local sports fishermen that this has been the worst night's weather for the past six years - anyway, St George's did not fare badly, gusting wind all night but no rain, however, the south and west of the island appears to have take a battering as did Sauteurs in the North - power went off at approx 1.00 a.m. in St Georges but now has been resumed.   Still very overcast with some heavy seas on the east coast, trees at Prickly Bay at 45 degrees in the night, a couple of yachts dragging in St George's Lagoon, no report yet from the other anchorages - will report again later - thank God no loss of life - trust that all other islands will be the same.

Sorry to hear that our friends in Barbados have had a bad hit - Grenada is totally still, no wind, no rain - 18.21 p.m. Government took the precaution of sending everyone home - businesses are boarded up but as of now we are luckily experiencing nothing - in fact with no wind at all it is quite uncomfortable - had some friends arrive from St Vincent this afternoon with a motor boat - for safe harbour - hoping that it stays this way but are thinking of you all up the islands.

Good morning everyone,
8.00AM monday morning and it's wet, oh dear it's wet !! Waiting for TD13 to arrive, probably around mid-day. It's 150 miles away moving at 23/25 miles per hour. It's estimated to pass directly over St. Vincent. After passing over the islands it is expected to increase to TS LILY and become a hurricane within three days. Our good fortune is someone else's big problem. Good luck everyone, don't go sailing today

  • Date: Sun, 22 Sep 2002 22:47:02 -0400 (Eastern Daylight Time)
Have been watching TD13 all day - thought it was moving up but then appears to have deviated slightly - waiting now for the 11.p.m update and still trusting that this will do the same as Jerry last year and move away - however, when it moves from us then unfortunately someone else will get it - hope and pray that nobody gets it too bad and that everyone comes out of it safely - will continue to watch and wait and trust that all our cruising friends are in safe anchorages.

  • Date: Sat, 14 Sep 2002 19:44:33 -0400 (Eastern Daylight Time)
Well, we were complaining about the heat and now we have had a temperature drop due to the intense rain experienced here in Grenada for the past 18 - 24 hours.  Heavy rain, thunder and lightning have been the order for the day.  The rain eased mid afternoon but we are sure to experience more.  We hope that this is not the sign of things to come with the weather system moving off Africa at this time - local people happy for the rain and the drop in temperature but not so good for the tourists or travelling yachts - good to luck to our friends further up the chain.

  • Date: Sun, 1 Sep 2002 21:23:51 -0400 (Eastern Daylight Time)
Well, watch her we did here on Grenada for a couple of days meandering her way across the Atlantic but were confident that she would behave herself and take a natural course away from us here in Grenada.  Hope she takes a quiet track up the islands and then fades away without making landfall - nothing in view off Africa at this time, we return to the peaceful waves lapping on our beaches, it was hot, hot, hot today, only tourists on the beach, the locals had more sense - no wind at all - unless you were sat at the water's edge cooling the toes in the blue blue Caribbean - good nite all, have a quiet one.

- Is Dolly Coming?
  • From: "Gallery Bar & Grill (Penny & Keith)" <gallery AT caribsurf.com>
  • Date: Wed, 28 Aug 2002 19:12:14 -0400 (Eastern Daylight Time)
When I posted some time ago, jokingly informing everyone that Dolly could be unpredictable, I did not realise that this would possibly be the first one to watch of the season - believing that by now she would have been long gone as a storm. However, although my nickname is Dolly and I can be unpredictable (according to my partner) I promise that over the next few days I shall be practising yoga and remaining as calm and tranquil as possible, sending out rays to Dolly to react the same way - (however, I have taken the added precaution of downloading the tracking chart) we may be in Grenada, normally safe and sound, but I think I will keep a close eye on my namesake and checking her out on a regular basis!

  • From: "Gallery Bar & Grill (Penny & Keith)" <gallery AT caribsurf.com>
  • Date: Thu, 22 Aug 2002 10:45:39 -0400 (Eastern Daylight Time)
Have we become complacent this season?  I hope not- had more rain yesterday but this time accompanied by some wind - three yachts dragged in the Lagoon - a timely reminder to set those anchors well.   Luckily cruisers are a good bunch and everyone pitched in and no damage was done.   See we're due for some more - well we are moving to Spetember after all.  We lost all our tablecoths on the outside of the bar yet again - time to get table clips I think!!!   Fine and sunny today but the satellite is showing what is to come.  Batten down those hatches and find out where the leaks come from!!!!

Well here it is, rain, rain and more rain, sorry for anyone here on holiday, yesterday and today, thunder and lightning right overhead at the moment, Max the dog, cross betwen labrador, great dane and bull mastiff laid at my feet, shivering - checked the satellite - looks like more on the way in the next couple of days, but no wind or signs of activity, we must be thankful for small mercies and buckets!!!!!!!! Hope all is well up the chain.

- It's Carnival in Grenada - so Sure to Rain!!!!
  • From: "Gallery Bar & Grill (Penny & Keith)" <gallery AT caribsurf.com>
  • Date: Sun, 11 Aug 2002 10:00:12 -0400 (Eastern Daylight Time)
Good morning everyone, pleased to see that the system coming off Africa yesterday has now broken up - was concerned that that might have turned into Dolly!!!  Grenada had rain last night but the sun is shining now and there is a gentle breeze, waters are calm and we are all looking forward to Carnival here - nice to see the downgrade from Dr Gray, but of course as everyone always says, it only takes one!!!! Hopefully after all the tragedy in the world the last few months, we will be spared this season.  Hope that the rain holds off for Carnival, or at least only drops over night.  Lots of cruising yachts here for the season, enjoying the island and the safe haven - welcome to you all.

Well, we have now had plenty of overnight rain here in Grenada over the past few days, cloudy this morning with a threat of showers - see on the sats that there is some weather on the way - you may recall my comments about Dolly being unpredictable - well I hope not, I hope she is in a really good mood and passes by like Bertha and Christobal - but are watching at this time - Carnival this weekend in Grenada so are hoping for the sun to shine by day, and the showers by night.

I see Terry's post which echoes a lot of thoughts on Grenada, this is too quiet - worth looking at the archives for the last time we think - weather here very hot, only slight showers, nothing heavy, have been lucky and not seen too much of the dreaded red dust - in fact Grand Anse beach is truly paradise with the flat water and blue skies - long may it continue.

  • From: "Gallery Bar & Grill (Penny & Keith)" <gallery AT caribsurf.com>
  • Date: Thu, 1 Aug 2002 19:11:54 -0400 (Eastern Daylight Time)
Hi everyone, well Grenada has had no real rain for a few days now, and what we have had can only be described as showers - therefore the temperature is rising and it's getting hot, hot, hot - luckily we have the cool blue sea to dip into - when we can get away from work that is - but the tourists are loving it - I really believe that Grenada is an ALL YEAR ROUND holiday destination and they should do away with the HIGH/LOW season - just a thought - end of July and nothing significant yet - and only Arthur been christened - could this be a very quiet season - I surely hope so.

Plenty of heavy heavy rain at nights now - hot humid days - great for the few tourists who are on Grenada at the moment enjoying peace and tranquillity here - still watching what is coming off the coast of Africa though - too quiet for this time of year - although it would be great to have a totally peaceful hurricane season - as long as it doesn't put us into a false sense of security - something else to think about though - anyone seen the BBC World News, doom and gloom - about the asteroid that MIGHT hit the world in SEVENTEEN years time - so who's worried abot the stock market then - hope everybody is having a good day !

Well that was a bit of fun - last day of Grenada Yacht Club Regatta and a nasty squall came over and gusts were reported off Grenada between 44 and 53 knots - calmed down now although very cloudy and overcast - see on the satellite that we are in for more though - time to knock through and put fireplace in the restaurant - decidedly chilly but great for sleeping!!!!

Well yesterday was unbearable - so hot and heavy - and right enough - today came the rain - not as much as we had hoped as an opener to the rainy season but enough to cool things down a bit and lay the dust.   Slight breeze blowing now  at 6 p.m.
Spending a lot of time up at unearthly hours watching football so getting some cool time.

Don't know what's going on here - rained through rainy season and now rainy season is dry.  Think Jamaica has everyone's rain - we'll most probably get it all for the Test Match at end of June.  Been watching the devlopment off Africa - I am really a novice but doesn't it look as though it's developing very low this year?
