Dear Gert,

On behalf of Franklin Graham, thank you for your email to Samaritan’s Purse. We appreciate your concern for the many thousands of people throughout the Caribbean who remain in desperate need in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma.

In addition to our ongoing efforts in St. Martin and our planned ministry in Antigua, we are broadening our work to include people in the Turks and Caicos. This week in partnership with local churches, we will begin distributing emergency relief supplies to about 1,000 households on these islands. The supplies will be carried on our DC-3 aircraft and include blankets, shelter tarping, hygiene kits, and household water filtration units. One unique item included—at the request of local resident—is plastic shoes. We will also provide tarping to churches and government buildings severely damaged by the monstrous storm. This expansion in our Caribbean response is possible because we’ve set up an operational hub on Puerto Rico, from where we can fly a DC-3 plane to smaller islands with airport access. We have about 30 personnel on the ground across several islands.

Our DC-8 cargo plane has made multiple trips to St. Martin, and we continue distributions to people there. Disaster response specialists are fanning out across different neighborhoods to bring food, water, and emergency supplies to thousands of families. Working with international/government agencies and through local churches, we are distributing relief supplies at these churches and among the elderly, the young, and the disabled. Many people have expressed gratitude to our staff for their compassion and hard work in the Name of Jesus.

At this time, the funds for this work is coming from our Hurricane Irma Relief (014025) fund. This account serves Florida and the Caribbean and there is not a way to only give to the islands instead of Florida. If you are still interested in donating to this work, you can visit our website or call our office at 1-800-528-1980.

We appreciate your ongoing prayers for all those affected by this storm, including our teams who are responding in Jesus’ Name. Thank you again, and God bless you.

The Story

If you've ever been to Virgin Gorda, you know how special it is.  Hurricane Irma has damaged so much of this community's infrastructure.  We are only now finding out what is happening.  To get ahead of this and help immediately, please assist us with the efforts to provide supplies and assistance to those affected.  All funds will be provided to those who need it the most in supplies and shipping costs.
It will take more than this $500K to help but we have to start somewhere.  Please help with anything you can.  I promise you that it will be provided to help pick up the community of Virgin Gorda that we all love so much.
Thank you!

NOTE:  I can promise you this will be used 100% for the community of Virgin Gorda - as a business owner on Virgin Gorda and a resident for over 14 years, your donations are in honest, loving hands.  - Casey McNutt

GlobalGiving
Hurricane Irma Relief Fund

Since making landfall on the tiny island of Barbuda last week, Hurricane Irma has cut a path of destruction across the Caribbean and Florida's Gulf Coast. Initially a Category 5 hurricane with winds of up to 185 mph, Irma severely damaged 95% of the buildings on the islands of Saint Martin and Saint Barthélemy, knocked out power for millions in the region, destroyed critical infrastructure, and has already claimed at least 40 lives.

Millions of Irma survivors are in immediate need of food, drinking water, shelter, and emergency medical care. The catastrophic flood and wind damage across the region means that the recovery and rebuilding process will likely last months, if not years.

Our vetted, locally driven nonprofit partners are responding now, and they need your help. Make a donation today to our Hurricane Irma Relief Fund and you'll fund trusted organizations delivering vital aid where it's needed most.

DONATE FOR IRMA RELIEF

All donations to the Hurricane Irma Relief Fund will exclusively support any necessary relief and recovery efforts from this storm in the Caribbean and the United States.

We believe organizations that are deeply rooted in local communities are in the best position to provide long-term support after natural disasters like Hurricane Irma. By funding the relief efforts of local organizations, we help communities become more resilient in the face of future challenges. And it's because of this strategy that GlobalGiving has been featured as a trusted place to donate for Irma relief by the New York Times, NPR, the Miami Herald, and numerous other news outlets this week.

As always, we'll keep you updated with regular reports about the impact of your donation and the progress of our partners' relief and recovery efforts.

Thank you for your generosity,
Will Frechette + the GlobalGiving Team

The Community Foundation of St John's relief effort activity may be followed on their Facebook page:

More importantly, there is an opportunity to donate to the organization directly through their website:

Perhaps this could be posted on the St John page specifically?

Thank you for all that you do! Edit as needed.

Global Giving is a nonprofit set up by the UN. It registers good nonprofit organizations- ones that work locally around the world. While they take a small percentage of your donation, any organization that joins their platform has to be legitimate.

Might be worth considering donations for Irma through this.

Best

Received from Claire Ochoa, former St.Thomas resident:

The Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands has set up a fund to help Virgin Islanders recover from Hurricane Irma, according to a statement from Delegate to Congress Stacey Plaskett.

“The Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands has started the FUND FOR THE VIRGIN ISLANDS. The purpose of this fund is to provide monies for critical needs in the Virgin Islands,” Plaskett said.

The CFVI is a fiduciary for a number of smaller charities and holds 501c3 tax status, so donations to it are tax deductible. It has been a fixture in the territory for more than 25 years.

People can make donations through PayPal using the following the link: http://cfvi.net/donate/donate-fund.php. Please add “Fund for the VI” or “FFVI” into the description/memo line.

Give to the St. John Community Foundation. Here is the link. http://thestjohnfoundation.org/donate

Please have all your subscribers send a constant barrage to the press about the dire situation and the need for massive rebuilding support. The USVI as you know are unable to pay for these efforts and are massively in debt so they can't issue bonds. They will be without power for months, have no sources of fresh water other than rain and need ongoing food water and medical assistance.

Frank Addison

From Susan MacLeod Edgecombe (Montserrat):
I would like to suggest people contact their local Rotary Clubs – they are all over. All volunteers – no paid staff (unlike Red Cross etc where only a fraction of the money goes to charity).

I think the best thing for anyone anywhere to do is find their local Rotary Club and give them funds designated for whatever island/community they desire. That Rotary Club will make it happen. This link has a club finder in top right corner: https://www.rotary.org/en/get-involved/rotary-clubs
