- More rain!

Dominican Republic, brace for rain!

GFS models continue to show accumulations, I believe, around 20 to 30 mm in some regions, specially in the center of our Homeland.

Dominicans are just returning from a wet holiday weekend, it is the Día Internacional del Trabajo (Workers Day), some were lucky to have periods of sun in the north, Punta Cana was not lucky though, reports coming from Aeropuerto Internacional de Punta Cana told wind gusts up to 50 km/h, some small planes flipped over, and heavy urban floods also were reported. Yesterday it was Samaná who had the most rain (the province in the nort-east that has the 'hand shape').

Right now, it is raining and lightning in Distrito Nacional and greater Santo Domingo, and this morning we just had beautiful skies and warm temperatures, but oh well, in the tropics, even on the most beautiful day, it rains, what a blessing.

Authorities are telling that rains with reduce frequency, but it is May and this is the month where it rains most.

Stay tuned...

Good Evening.

Just wanted to post quickly these pictures I found in social media regarding the recent events from past few days. I can speak from my experience in Distrito Nacional that it has been raining with short recess from Friday, it's been worst in southwest coast. Rain might succeed within the next day or two, but for the moment, damage is being done to the infrastructure across some provinces.

- Flooding on the north coast.

Thank you Guillermo for your good wishes.  The flooding is now so bad that the government has declared a state of emergency on the north coast.  In the last 2 weeks we have had a fraction under 30 inches, 762mm of rain and it is still pouring down.  Thousands of people are flooded out of their homes and there is much damage to bridges with the rivers being 20ft + higher than their normal levels.  We pray for everyone affected and do what we can.

- Heavy rain on the north coast
  • By carol read <carolread1945 at yahoo.com>
  • Date: Wed, 9 Nov 2016 15:02:32 +0000 (UTC)
The very heavy rain - 19.5 inches in the last 7 days and 8.7 inches in the last 24 hours - has caused widespread flooding and washed away roads from Puerto Plata to Rio San Juan and perhaps even further east.  Schools have been damaged and many homes washed away, but no figures are available at the moment.  Clothing and bedding etc is being collected for those who have lost everything.

The north coast had another big thunderstorm last night, giving us nearly 5 inches of much needed rain.  No sun today either as we have solid overcast, but the frogs are quiet so I guess we will have no more rain for a while.  The barometer is rising and the slightly cooler weather is wonderful.

Good morning.

Everything is calm here and glad the same thing for most of the Lesser Antilles (watching a disturbance crossing between St. Vincent and Granada).

Matthew is such a strange storm, with a 90 degrees turn and a possible loop that may affect the coast like of Miami, which was spared in this first track, certainly is still got my attention even though is in our past.

Good afternoon.

Total rainfall in three days is attached (3 to 5 of October), max was
registered at Maria Montez Intl. Airport in Barahona with 430 mm (16 in).

Number of people in shelters has reduced to 1,039 people.

All hospitals affected are now 100% operational, schools are open except in
those we rain damage was reported. Power is being restored quickly where the
infrastructure suffered. No more deaths has been reported.

Distrito Nacional did not receive rain yesterday, just a bit in early a.m.
hours, today it has been partially cloudy, hot and humid.

Wishing all those in the path of this one, affected and to be affected, a
'pronto' recovery.

Stay tuned...

Good news from the north coast - gentle rain and light wind with a few big
gusts last night. The overcast is lessening today and we even had a few
moments of sunshine. Barometer is still falling slightly and we have a
temperature of 30c with 80% humidity.

Good afternoon.

I have not being able to get the latest info, but at last we are finally getting some sunshine, it has been cloudy for the most part of the day so far but not rain nor drizzle, nothing.

I had to call off a work trip to Monte Plata Province because a river has interrupt traffic on Road 7 (Autopista del Nordeste), good thing I watched the news beforehand.

We are slowly coming to normal, traffic this morning was a little bit busier than yesterday.

Hoping that in Bahamas are doing well.

A lot of rain the whole night, a lot, period.

We are seeing the aftermath of yesterday's and today rain, trees down, some sectors have lost power due to downed electric poles, some streets are closed due to flooding, and sadly, to children have lost their life because of a landslide in Capotillo, Distrito Nacional, just read a report from COE.

Also, 14k+ displaced nation wide, schools closed nation wide, and tomorrow will remain closed in provinces with red and yellow alert.

We woke up to a break from the rain, but sure we are expecting more.

Stay tuned...

Good evening.

Earlier today, my commute to home was easier, less traffic than usual, because of school closed.

It's being raining all afternoon, some times with greater intensity than other. A couple of thunders as well. Dominican power grid is essentially vulnerable with these type of events, but at least in my area we haven't get outages, not yet.

So a made a quick run on social media and news and noted some important information:

We have now 16 provinces under Red Alert, including Greater Santo Domingo [Population of almost 3 million people] (previously under yellow alert), 8 provinces in yellow and 7 in green alerts. This are just means for local authorities to distribute resources were is needed.

Speaking of that, Ozama River is flooding the settlements on its shores, luckily, a couple of months ago people residing there (most of them) were relocated by the government on new apartments. There has been reports of urban floods in some cities and towns.

Here are some accumulatives in some provinces:

Pedernales: 422 mm
La Vega: 222 mm
San Pedro de Macorís: 117 mm
Santo Domingo Metro Area: 94 mm

Schools and some campuses are closed tomorrow, some public offices as well.

Some flight cancellations reported in Las Americas Intl. Airport.

Report of a tornado in Oviedo, Pedernales, destroyed 12 houses.

And for the moment, that's all I got, hoping everyone in the track of this monster stay as safe as possible, specially folks in Haiti, where wind damage might be widespread.

Stay tuned...

On and off short rain showers. Very cloudy skies. Chilly temperature, a relief

because traffic is down very much with schools being cancelled on Monday and
Tuesday. Everyone is concerned for neighbour Haiti. What happens in Haiti spills
over to the DR.

Distrito Nacional is getting a lot of rain now, but reports from the southwest

when I get chances in my office.

The first two pictures are mine, taken from "Gazcue sector", last one is from
twitter user at capiurtecho, from a more centric Santo Domingo "Piantini sector".

I've seen already pictures of street flooding, it could get worse as we are
getting just started.

On the north coast it is eerily quiet. We are overcast and almost no breeze even right by the beach! Calm before the storm for sure.

Schools are closed. The government has warned people. Most provinces are under red or yellow alerts.

Until know we had no big problems with this big hurricane,  the east side of the island just had some wind blowing last couple of days but nothing to worry about,  some short showers, but I was surprised that Matthew didn't effect us more,  that explains is very south passing,  today schools have been closed for the rest of the country but not in the east area,  La Altagracia Province. At the moment the hurricane is going more north and some more light rain is falling at the moment.  Let's hope that Haiti, Cuba and North part of Hispanola , will suffer not to much from this mega hurricane

For the last 4 days we have had heavy rain alternating with blue skies and
overcast conditions, with a total of 2.6 inches of rain over that time. Today
however we have heavy overcast and although the breeze is stirring the palm
trees slightly, it feels very still. Schools are closed and people are being
moved out of areas prone to flooding. The barometer is falling slightly and
now we wait.

  • By "Guillermo A. Serra" <gaquiles at gmail.com>
  • Date: Sun, 2 Oct 2016 10:27:21 -0400
Slow moving Major Hurricane Matthew has everyone on their nerves, COE has updated the Event Generator Alert and now the whole country is under some type of alert code. For us, in Distrito Nacional province, is Yellow Alert, and the provinces on the border with Haiti are all in Red Alert, plus, some coast provinces in south-west and north-west.

I worked for several months in Haiti, so I know what is it when it rains. Streets in Port-au-Prince become rivers with small rocks and debris running thru it, specially on upper Petion Ville and higher altitude villages like Montagne Noire, and Fontamara village floods completely with a small squall, so my thought and prayer for Haitian people as well Jamaica and Cuba.

Stay tuned, and stay safe!

- Better prevent than regret

Matthew represents no apparent threat to us, but just in case, we got prepared. There are over 3,200 shelters available just in case authorities have to evacuate, and there is a clean up brigade designated to restore circulation in Malecón Ave, where sea is agitated still.

We Dominicans like to recurre to our national dish "Sancocho", there was this storm all over social media that many were stocking on supplies, consisting in avocados and meat, because on rainy days, we just love to have something fulfilling and conforming and hot, and for many other cultures theres the stew and soups and what not, we just love the sancocho. I myself couldn't have it, but still I enjoy this cloudy and rainy weather.

Speaking about that, not much rain, we had earlier (in Santo Domingo's Polígono Central) a squall? I live surrounded by buildings and was kinda busy doing some shores when suddenly had to run to my small backyard to pick up a duvet that I had hanging and had to put it in the dryer machine.

As I'm writing this, I can hear thunders approaching in the vicinity, so we should have some more rain, or we are just getting started, because it is expected that when Matthew turns to the north, outer bands will bring some rain.

Stay tuned...

Morning y'all.

So, Matthew has taking a distant course from our Homeland, but its effects are being felt very well on our coat, as the Autopista 30 de Mayo, main avenue that runs on the capital coastline, is shut down on some parts due to rocks and debris being thrown to by the high waves, other than that, everything is calm, a little bit of soft breeze.

Green alert was updated to cover south-west region, people are being advised to stay away from the coast.

Forecasters say there will be much rain next Sunday thru Tuesday.

Good evening.

At 1:00 p.m. local, COE (Centro de Operaciones de Emergencia at COE_RD), issued an "Declaratory of Alert", just as Mathew got Tropical Storm Status.

A Green Alert has been issued from Saona Island, in La Altagracia province to Pedernales Province, entire south coast. Meaning all vessels should stay in port in south coast.

At 5:00 p.m.Green Alert was updated to cover Provinces: Azua, Peravia, San Cristóbal, San José de Ocoa, Barahona and Pedernales.

Bulletin says Ministry of the Presidency, as well as Administrative and Defense Ministry, are keeping constant communication with COE regarding this soon-to-be Hurricane Mathew.

Earlier, this tropical disturbance was modeled to track hit Hispaniola, but now I must say we got lucky, but of course, watching it closely as it churns nearby.

Thoughts and prayers for folks in Lesser Antilles that are in track of this one.

Good morning,

The capital of the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo, where I am reporting from, has been getting little amounts of rain since yesterday's evening. About 3:00 a.m. this morning, there was little noise produced by my blackouts curtains, I had to shut the windows, it was do to some wind, I noticed a great deal of lighting, but not much rain.

So ever since, we've getting rain from time to time, not heavy showers, it is completely overcast and earlier, our Oficina Nacional de Meteorología called Dominicans to pay close attention to the bulletins that will be issued during the day, and Centro de Operaciones de Emergencia issued green and yellow warnings, mostly on provinces on the east, south east and north regions.

It is believed that rain will be significant on some parts of the country.

As organized and big as it looks, this thunderstorm area just south of Dom Rep is just that. Yesterday we had heavy showers with some gusting winds and thunderstorms around 2:00 p.m. in National District. We woke up with completely overcast skies and rain threat.

I read some reports of heavy rains in Peravia Province, which is located on the southwest coast line.

Centro de Operaciones de Emergencia (COE) issued green alert for the following provinces: Peravia, Azua, Barahona, Pedernales. Already in green alert from yesterday: La Altagracia, La Romana, San Pedro de Macorís, Hato Mayor, El Seibo, Great Santo Domingo area, Duarte, San Cristóbal and Monte Plata

being a repeat of the drought of 2015. Now the grass is greening and the birds
