- Culebra: Wet & Windy
  • By William Kunke <wkunke787 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Tue, 20 Dec 2016 06:38:17 -0400
Good Morning,

Culebra had a wet & windy night, also had some lightning with thunder, strange for this time of year.  Culebra received 0.60 inches of rain last night, with wind gust of 20-25 mph.

I have posted the rip current warnings and it is expected to be like this for most of this week.  So, be careful out there.  I also post a sea level photo taken on Sunday, showing the build up of the seas.

Merry Christmas to all our island reporters and friends,  William

Good Morning,

Culebra recived a bit above average rainfall this month, 6.4 inches.  This brought our yearly total up to 32.2 inches so far.  Some good soaking rains and a couple of "deluges" that brought some run-off.

I attach the rainfall data chart and a photo of the full moon setting as the sun rises from a water level photo, taken earlier this month.

Enjoy,  William

Here on Culebra we've had rain on and off for days. Today has been squally, with high winds then dropping to nothing and blue skies. Repeat. Wackadoo!

Thinking of those to the south and hoping for the best with Otto.

From my front door (through a window, the rain was blasting)

Good Morning,   Culebra's rainfall total for October is 4.4 inches.  That brings our total rainfall for the year up to 25.9, still very low on average, but with two "wet" months to go this year.  Last week we had two days with 0.5 inches and that brought our total for the month up nicely.  Culebra remains green and growing, lots of grass to cut this month.

I attach the rainfall data chart, a beach scene from the east end of Culebra, a Hawksbill turtle I observed yesterday morning, and a Grouper laying eggs in the shallow water sand.

Enjoy,  William

Please find attached a rainfall data chart for Culebra, PR.

I also attach and "Above/Below photo and a sunrise photo with St Thomas in the background.

- Culebra; July Rainfall
  • By William Kunke <wkunke787 at gmail.com>

Good Morning,  The second half of July gave Culebra some good rains and squally rains for the last two days of the month.  July's total is 4.1 inches, the most of any month so far this year.  That amount gives us a total of 16.2 inches for 2016 thus far, giving our soil a good moisture base without runoff.  See the attached chart for historic and current rainfall data.

I also attach photos of the tropical system approaching  with a Shelf cloud and Cumulus clouds;  A photo of the ISS flyover Culebra on July 24th:  A photo of our new bunch of bananas and a combo/waterline photo of Culebra.

Enjoy,  William

- International Space Station Flyby

This is the best I could do with capturing the ISS (International Space Station) flyby this morning at 5 AM.  It was very cloudy on the horizon and the ISS literally jumped out ot the cloud.  There was a lot of ambient light, including some from the Moon, making for a less detailed trail.  Still, exciting for me to see. Culebra did receive some small showers during the night and after this passage of the ISS.

Enjoy,  William

Good Morning,   Culebra is extremely dry once again.  June started out with much promise, but since then it has bits & drabs.  We are far below our averages with only 1.6 inches for June and only 12.1 inches thus far for the year.  See Attached chart.

Most mornings appear like this first photo with a thick haze and not much promise of rain.

I also attach some underwater photos taken this month.

We wish you all a Happy 4th of July Holiday,  William

Good Morning,  Like all the other islanders, we here on Culebra have been very dry for this time of year.  We did have a bit more precipitation at the end of the month of May, and hopefully the prediction of a rainy June holds true.  Thank you for the CariCOF info from Nevis.

As you will see on the chart attached Culebra received 1.7 inches of rain in May, making for a yearly total of 10.5 inches.

I also attach some cloud photos taken around the island last week.
Enjoy,  William

Good Morning,  Culebra had a good rainfall amount of 3.1 inches of rain in April.  We did not get the big rains that some of our neighboring islands did, but what we got really soaked in to keep the island green and blooming.  The rainfall chart below shows average rainfall so far this year.  I also attach photos of the Memoza and Cirus blooms this morning.
Enjoy,  William
