- Update from Caimito Alto (San Juan) Puerto Rico
  • From: Joan Santos <joansantos1755 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Thu, 5 Sep 2013 07:55:10 -0400

Good morning all,

I'm writing to you from Caimito Alto, an urbanization located in the hills of San Juan.  So far, Tropical Storm Gabrielle has proven to be more of a nuisance than anything.  We have steady rain and diminished winds but anticipate a soaking over the next few days. During most heavy rains, we tend to lose our water supply.  We have prepared for this contingency, by stockpiling gallons of water to flush and additional gallons for consumption.

We lost power overnight and are currently without a generator, but hope to get that up and running this morning.  Were making the best of the situation.  My husband and I cooked bagels and coffee on our grill and are looking forward to a day filled with dominoes and reading!

We hope that the current forecast for Gabrielle is spot on and that she diminishes quickly.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all in Gabrielle's path, that she may be kind and merciful.

Stay safe!

- Something wrong with storm models

Hi everyone!

It is around 7:30 A.M.  I am in San Juan Puerto Rico.  Acording to oficial reports and tracking models it was
supposed that Gabrielle's center should be early at sunrise in the south-WEST corner of P.R., and be at this time in the Mona Passage between P.R. and D.R.  However.... if anyone looks at the  radar picture  shows something completely different.   The radar animation pictures shows clearly a center of circulation in the south-EAST corner of P.R.   Most of the intense rain bands are actually to the EAST of P.R. through the Virgin Island.

I am not a meteorologist but you don't have to be one to realize this system is not following the model tracks.  I am puzzled why there have not been any oficial reports explaining this huge discrepancy.   It might be that the other system to the north east is pulling Gabrielle towards the north-east.

Through the night, here in San Juan we had light rain though constantly.  I only Heard one single distan thunder in the entire night.  Now we have a very light drizzle, and I have not experience a single draft of wind.  Everything is very calm in San Juan at this momento.

Hope that all folks in the Virgin Islands, Vieques and Culebra are all doing well.  Take care.

Francisco

- So far not bad

I am located in San Juan, P.R.  Today we have had a rainy day.   It has been raining intermitently.  Ocasionally heavy but not continuosly heavy.
Estimates are about 1 inch so far throu most of the island.   Amazingly we had a beautiful sunset in San Juan today in spite of a partially cloudy sky.  Just about half an hour ago we had another downpour but again only lasted about 10 min.   So here we are waiting for would be Gabrielle.   More action is expected after midnight and in the morning.   The goverment will close its offices  tomorrow and clases have been suspended in the public school system.  As usual, heavy rains is the top concern with this system.  With the second disturbance approaching as well in the north-east of P.R. it is more difficullt to predict  what will happen.

- Possible Tornado
  • From: Margie <margie2117 at aol.com>
  • Date: Sat, 27 Jul 2013 08:38:56 -0400 (EDT)
Good Morning..
Several poles down and some house damage, were reported yesterday afternoon because of a possible tornado in the town of Moca and west areas of the island. The main major damage occurred in the Moca's neighborhood. Although the east coast was a nice, sunny but very breezy day, the west was totally the opposite. Now we are just waiting to see if Dorian could dump a couple of inches of rain as of tomorrow Sunday, even though it has lost strength we need to keep in mind of flood warnings can become in affect. - Nice & Cool Evening!
  • From: Margie <margie2117 at aol.com>
  • Date: Fri, 19 Jul 2013 01:03:36 -0400 (EDT)
Hi...today was really a wet day all the way up to this evening when finally the rain has stopped. Our east coast had some hard times but not as much as for the North of the Island where the surroundings of the city of San Juan was in deep trouble having some serious flooding, while many people got trapped in their cars with the bumper to bumper traffic.
Today is a historic date where Puerto Rico breaks the record due to this tropical wave that rained more than when we had the effects of Hurricane Hugo (September 18,1989). Total rain Thursday July 18,2013 from 12am up until 7pm was of 9.20 inches. Making it on a 2nd place, Hugo, dumped 8.84 inches of rain back in 1989 being now in 3rd place. The first place goes back in August 15,1944 when 9.67 inches where measured. I just keep saying to myself, last week we were so worried because of tropical storm Chantal...and hardly any rain was felt..whereas to the west coast was in danger according to it's projected path and the residents there were experiencing a very nice & sunny day. So much getting ready for that event and yesterday, we were just told it was just some rain coming in, not much to worry about...we had a totally different outcome with huge downpours!!
Never know what to expect...these are the tropics and the best that we can do is to be alert for any last minute changes in our weather forecast. I'm sharing a view of about 2pm, but believe me the whole day was just like this I had the lights in the kitchen on all day long.
Hopefully tomorrow we will have a nice day good to start the weekend off until Monday that we again could expect rain but not as much as today, for now it is calm and breezy very comfortable for resting.

Keep Safe!!

The huge quantity of rain fallen over the Luis Muñoz Marín airport (over 8 inches) forced authorities to ground 7 planes and to divert another 9 to Aguadilla's airport, Santo Domingo, Punta Cana, St Croix and St Thomas. At 4:45pm, the planes began to resume their flights.

The rain is diminishing, for good. The NWS office in Carolina reported 8.43 inches. A lot of people were taken by surprised, not because they didn't know that the island would be affected by a tropical wave if not by the rain intensity in a two hour period.

- Update from Caimito Alto, San Juan, Puerto Rico
  • From: Joan Santos <joansantos1755 at gmail.com>

Good evening all,

I'm writing to you from Caimito Alto, an urbanization located in the hills of San Juan. It's been overcast with scattered sprinkles for most of the day.  My husband and I are anxiously waiting the passing of TS Chantal.  Because her trajectory is forecast to pass far south of our location, we have prepared for the worst and will hope for the best.  In the event of a power loss we have a small generator on hand to run necessary appliances, and are fully equipped with dominoes, board games, puzzles and books.  The supplementary laptop batteries are charging and we have water and non-perishable items on hand.

During my first year on the island, I was very ill-prepared for Hurricane Earl.   We are grateful to sites like these so that we van keep on top of what's coming our way from the reports of others, like us, who live and work in these parts.  For those who are in the watch and warning areas, if you have not done so already, please complete your storm preparations.  If you are unfamiliar with storm preparations, the National Hurricane Center has some suggestions: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/prepare/

In the past hour, we've experienced some wind gusts, but nothing overly unusual.  We will update you on any deteriorating conditions as we move into tomorrow.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all in Chantal's path, that she may be kind and merciful.

Stay safe!

Hi Guys...first real potential ts of this season for us here in the Ponce.  Winds picking up a little now but no black clouds...yet.  Just came in from putting all my potted plants in protective mode for the wind.  'Tis mango season at the farm and mangos are dropping about 800 a day on the driveway...what a mess!  Hoping Chatal will help with the thinning of the mangos and instead of dropping them on the ground will pass them along to the neighbors!!  Guess we huddle in tonight as she passes like a ship in the night glazing the south shore of Puerto Rico with her tropical storm force winds...minor...hopefully...this time...but we'll see.  Sure looks like a great sunset so far, ya think?   I'll give you a report in the morning.

- Chantal

Although I live near the east coast, I have spent the last two weeks on the west coast at Mayaguez with relatives. It's Tuesday almost 2 am and a cool breeze is being felt. Many residentes went out grocery shopping and were also filling their gas tanks making sure eveything is done ontime due to the approaching of Chantal which is expected to pass near the southwest of the island. Perhaps the impact will be more here than to the East coast. What I am sure is that I will head back home in a few hours to get ready myself, you never know if a change of path can harm my area, as we say..better safe than sorry. Meanwhile keep safe everyone in this island and in the other locations as well.

- indoors for now!

Headed to town and on my way back this is what captured my attention, although it has been raining since last night, seems like we will have some more today, especially our east coast region. Tropical wave will cause more rain expecting a 50% chance on Saturday. Forecast for this coming Sunday "Father's Day" looks much better perhaps some hazy skies, good to spend time outdoors with the family.
Have a nice Week-end & Father's Day!!

- "Rain & More Rain"
  • From: Margie <margie2117 at aol.com>

  Hello everyone!!
Getting ready for this storm season while the NOAA offers it's official forecast for the Atlantic 2013 hurricane season expecting 13-17 tropical storms, 7-11 hurricanes & 3-6 major hurricanes category 2 or more. Here in Puerto Rico we have been already experiencing lots of rain causing many flooding. I'm sharing a photo of a nearby street near the east coast where I live. Honestly, I'm beginning to worry that we may have lots of problems to deal with due to weather issues.
Forecast for this upcoming long holiday week-end informed us that we should have lots of rain heading our way, I guess there goes our cookout, perhaps we'd go from using the grill to using the oven & have plenty of popcorn, chips & dips and of course a good movie to watch!

Keep Safe!!
