Good Morning,

Culebra received 4.4 inches of rain in April, which did great things for our grasses and flowers.  The island is at it's springtime best.

For those of you who have this tradition for the beginning of a month:

Rabbit, Rabbit!

Enjoy the merry month of May,  William

Good Morning,  I attach a photo of our rain gauge showing 2.5 inches of rain in the past two days.  That is more rain than in the past two months.

You will also note the green starting to show in the grass.  A wonderful rain, that mostly had time to soak in. Thank You to all the rain dancers.

Today dawns clear and sunny, looks to be a nice weekend.

Happy April islanders, perhaps some April showers?  Let's hope.

As the chart indicates, Culebra received only 0.9 inches of rain in March.  A very dry start to the year with only 3.1 inches.

Inline image 1

With beautiful sunrises and schooners anchored in the bay we will not complain too much.

Wishing you all a Happy April and some rain if you need it.

Good Morning,  Culebra has been mainly cool and dry this month.  We did get 0.5 inches of rain last week, but it was sucked in so fast, it barely ran down the hill.  As for comparison for Nevis, Culebra's coldest temp was 67 this month.  Mostly the temps are 70 at night.

Inline image 1

I am attaching this photo of Culebra's famous Flamengo Beach, taken as we flew back from PR.  Despite it's green appearance, it is very dry in the undergrowth and we are at high fire danger.  This danger is expected to last at least another week.  Please be careful with your flammables.

Enjoy,  William

Good Morning,  Attached is the rainfall data chart for Culebra, showing that 2014 is just about average.  The grasses have started drying out, with sunny, windy days this month.

Thanks to Harry in Nevis for his data, it's nice to compare.

Here is our sunrise this AM, looking over the Culebra hills to St Thomas showing well (14 miles distant) in the sunrise beneath a heavy cloud bank.

Good Morning,   Culebra's rainfall total for January was 0.9 inches.  This happens to be the exact same amount as 2013 January.  So the start is the same, we will see if the year duplicates itself.

Inline image 1

This morning started out with cloudy skies and "sprinkly" rain.

We wish all our fellow islanders a safe and happy 2014.

Happy New Year,

Below is the rainfall data for 2013, showing December to be over average at 5.3 inches of rain, with a total rainfall of 42.9 inches for 2013.  That is somewhat below our 26 year average of 45.64.

Inline image 1

Rainfall in Culebra was distributed somewhat evenly throughout the year, with no major storms.  The island is super green for this time of year and I think it can attributed to less animal grazing and planting of trees over the years.  Below is an aerial photo of Cuebra taken in the 80's.  You can see a lot of brown areas that are now green and covered with trees.

Enjoy 2014 and plant more trees,  William

Culebra rainfall for December thus far is 4.3 inches, already an inch more than our average.  More predicted with this system that is over us and this morning seems to have some circulation to it.  As always, our final report on the end of the month.

Merry Christmas to our fellow islanders.  Nice to have all the Brits back, enjoy those boxing day footie games.    William

Good Morning,

We are glad to see the end of hurricane season without any significant storms affecting our area.  Yesterday and through the night Culebra received 2 inches of rainfall.  The dry creek bed is running pretty well this AM.  This brought our total rainfall for November up to 4.2 inches, more in line with the norm.

With the NWS radar looking like this, Culebra is sure to receive some more rain today and into the week.

We wish all our island friends a happy and safe holiday season.

Good Morning,

Culebra is experiencing lots of surf and wave action, especially on the North facing beaches.  Our Flamengo Beach is red-flagged the past few days.  The combination of a cold front and "Melissa" to our north has caused this action.  Yesterday I took this video of the action/sound of the surf,  Enjoy,  William

Good Morning,

Culebra had on/off showers most of yesterday afternoon and into the evening. As these clouds indicate, we have broken cloudiness this morning. The prediction is for a rainy weekend, but there is a lot of shear in the area, so Culebra may just miss the bulk of the rain.

Inline image 1

Below is the rainfall data for Culebra thus far, 2013.
4.6 inches in October brought our total to 33.4 inches, which brings us up to the more normal range for the year.

Good Morning,  Last night Culebra experienced a huge, crackling thunder and lightning storm.  We received 0.50 inches of rain, but the lightning was the real show stopper.  Amazing to us that power was maintained throughout.

Yesterday morning prior to the storm we went snorkeling and got these photos to share,   Enjoy,  William

Good Morning,   Yesterday afternoon Culebra had 5 hours of thunder, lightning, and 2.20 inches or rain overall.  Enough rain to get the dry creek running all night.  All this moisture is a blessing to our lime crop and mystery orchid.  A beautiful sunrise this morning promises some drying-out time.

Good Morning,  Culebra had a rain cell from the south stay for a bit last night: shifty winds, minimal rain, lots of lightning.  This southerly air flow has made the last few days very hot and humid.  We also some volcanic ash came with it also, but could not find the Montserratt volcano website.  Turns out the site is down and they are posting their info here:

We hope to return to a more easterly air flow soon.  I have attached a couple photos of the flowers that thrive in the hot/humid air.

Enjoy,  William

Good Morning,

Yesterday morning the radar indicated that Culebra would most likely have a rainy day. We went snorkeling early and had a wonderful time with clear water and plenty of light to catch some nice underwater photos.

So, just a cloudy day until the late afternoon. Then some dark clouds came up from the south and produced this water spout over the water in the channel between Culebra and Vieques. Later during the nighttime we received thunder, lightning, and almost an inch of rain (.90 inch).

Good Afternoon,

Culebra has had fairly clear skies this week.  Lots of sun, heat, humidity at the peak of the day, but then cooling off in the afternoon.  Clear skies should help in the observance of the asteroid showers in the next few evenings and real early morning hours.

Our seas continue to impress and here is our newest video of snorkeling on Culebra.   Enjoy,  William

We are all happy that it did not affect anyone adversely   The rainfall Culebra has received this month has brought out a lot of new growth and plenty of green.  We dropped some squash seeds into our compost pile outback at the beginning of the month and they have really taken off.

Rainfall for Culebra in June was 7.50 inches.  That is more than double our average for June.  However for the year Culebra was far behind, so this helps a lot.  Now everyone is cutting grass and dealing with mosquitoes.

As seen in the photo, our sunrises are still fighting with the Sahara dust to shine through.  When the Sahara dust suppresses any storm development we are glad.

  • From: William Kunke <wkunke787 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Thu, 20 Jun 2013 06:58:52 -0400

Good Morning,

Yesterday Culebra received 3.80 inches of rain.  Most of the rainfall occurred between 1-4 PM, at times at the rate of an inch an hour.  A good gulley-washer and Culebra was in need of the moisture and full cisterns.  I notice some "swirly" things to our North, I wonder if this moisture blob will hook-up with any of that for further development?

The Bormiliades sure appreciate the rain:

Culebra still has a cloudy cover this AM, perhaps a shower or two left in this wave.

Culebra received 0.20 inches of rain last night from this passing wave.  We had some gust of close to 25 mph.  On the radar it appears we have a good chance of getting some more rain later today.  I love seeing the raindrops glisten on the flowering trees in the morning after a rain.

Good Morning,

Another clear/dry day for Culebra.  Our rainfall total for April was 0.3 inches, the least amount of rainfall for this month since 1997.  In 1997 we had good rains in the months before April, more than 7 inches.  This year we only have a total amount thus far of 3.9 inches.  Rain is predicted for this weekend, lets hope May brings rain.
