- Wet and windy

Skies are pretty overcast with a decent breeze out of the east. We are expecting increasing winds and rain, possibly very heavy in particular areas and this should continue through the weekend. Rip currents will make swimming at south Florida beaches dangerous, and a small craft advisory is out for the area. Right now the boat ramp parking is empty and it should be a quiet day at the park. We are also keeping an eye on a system out in the Florida Straits that could develop further as the week moves on.
Any Formula 1 fans out there? Tomorrow is the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka, and even though the championship is virtually settled, it promises to be a great race. We are pulling for Hamilton who has had a difficult year in a tremendous field of drivers. Possibly the best and deepest talent collection I can remember.
Enjoy your weekend all.

Anybody?

- Boards on the window?

Good morning all...

"Boards on the window
Mail by the door
What would anybody leave so quickly for?
Ophelia
Where have you gone?"

Great old song by the Band from Northern Lights, also on The Last Waltz.

Strong breezes blowing the last few days with a few showers, but nothing serious. Ocean has been a little rough for diving, but we had a fine martini sunset run the other night on the bay side celebrating our son's movie premiere. watch out Marty!

Haven't posted much lately as I have been obsessed with the Republican primary campaign. Now there is a storm brewing on the horizon. Why is it that some gladly promote social welfare for huge oil, gas and corn corporations but would deny a single mother  basic health care? Why is it that some think governments are incapable of productive involvement in environmental issues, healthcare, finance, industry, regulations etc etc but is infallible when it comes to capital punishment?

Let's hope Ophelia does not darken our door!

Best to all, keep the faith and stay dry.

- Irene beckons
  • By Scott Papp <scottpapp17 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Tue, 23 Aug 2011 07:45:29 -0400
It appears that Irene will move through this area somewhat to our east  but one can never be sure. The models and cones have been perceptibly shifting in that direction over the last few days but this bodes ill for the Bahamas. In any event be assured that Irene is not watching the forecasts but may very well seek any source of food and energy, including the Keys and South Florida. This looks like a significant event with dangerous wind, rain and surge.
We are looking at slightly overcast skies and gentle breezes this morning.
Be careful, be prepared.

Just a small correction, the post from Florida Keys Aug 19, is actually from Aug 1. How it got moved to the 19 is a mystery, It appears as though I am talking about something that already happened.
Now for the future. It seems that if Irene maintains her predicted track she will pass just about over top of our location on Fri the 26. Moving at her present speed it doesn't give a lot of time for prep but we are always ready this time of year. Lets all hope she deceides to move out to the Atlantic before causing to much trouble.

- Heavy rain
  • By Scott Papp <scottpapp17 at gmail.com>

This morning's sun gave way to dark clouds and a shower, and right now some heavy rain. It is impossible to look at the early track of 97L without thinking this could be a problem. The water temperature on Molasses Reef is some 5 degrees warmer than the air right now. Is this not the kind of food a good storm needs? I need to stock up on cat food and kibble...

Would Thomas Jefferson have said this about a CD or a DVD or some data in a cloud?

Well I guess the excitement is about to start. Emily has made her debut and it will be

interesting to see where she goes and at what intensity. At present she is forcast to be just

off the coast of Miami, Fl by Saturday afternoon. That puts her about 60 miles east of us.

Depending upon her track by Thursday we will probably pull the boat and batten down. I

think it is too early to make firm plans. We shall see. We hope Emily stays small and just

disapates and leaves EVERYBODY out of harms way. We will watch all the posts and

make our own. Everybody take care.

- Mini Season
  • By Scott Papp <scottpapp17 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Thu, 28 Jul 2011 08:34:34 -0400
We are in the middle of what we call "mini season". For a few days the lobstering is open to the public before the actual season opens. This brings to the Keys a host of boaters from the mainland spending huge sums of money for the right to harvest six lobsters per day per person. Given the lousy conditions, very windy with horrible viz and 2 to 3 foot seas inside the reef, it looks like the lobsters are winning this one.

Our friends at Fish and Wildlife hate this week as it brings long shifts and many accidents due to boating traffic congestion, overcrowding aboard, alcohol and inexperience at the helm. Even the possibility of a fatality or two as some of these hunters swim like a bag of horseshoes.

As I write this there is only one boat at the ramp parking lot, skies are fair but the wind is blowing steadily at 20 knots and the seas are up. A small boat caution warning from the NWS is keeping people off the water this AM (or is it the tequila from last night?).

Thanks to the Mermaid Gardener for her advice on my bougainvillea, it has finally and beautifully flowered.

We are off to Connecticut this week for our son's movie premiere...very exciting. Marty and Francis had best beware!

We have finally gotten into a summer pattern. The rains are coming every day at just about

any time of day or night. Thunderstorms are pretty common everywhere along with heavy

downpours. We need the rain but at that rate a lot just runs off. The first ts of the season

has formed and is heading into Mexico. We wish them all the best. Lets hope its a quiet

year.

- Calm seas and good viz

Greetings all:

No rain again, early week forecasts were all wrong. The wind has let up quite a bit and it looks like the flags will be hugging the pole in the park across the street for the next few days. According to the NWS a weak pressure pattern should treat us to gentle breezes and smooth seas for the next few days. Possible scattered showers and thunderstorms. I think this calls for some diving and a trip out to the flats with the dogs.

- Very dry here and hot

Hello all!

Just a few days into our "rainy" season and we have yet to see more than a few drops. The grass is brown and we struggle to keep our plants going. However I can't help but notice how our gated communities maintain that tropical rain forest look in spite of water restrictions. We certainly don't look forward to hurricane events, but a little tropical disturbance would be more than welcome. One might think that this constant wind, 20 plus knots on the ocean side of the rock, would treat us to a splash of cool water. No such luck...

Great gusts of wind the other night just before midnight got the girls (our two lovely rescued dogs) barking and leaping as the palms and ferns swept and bowed to the ground, but not a sprinkle of moisture.

Here's a great quote from one of our greatest writers, gone at a far too early age, barely forty. Nature lover, adventurer, pirate and sustainable farmer, produced over 50 books and short stories. Next time the heat gets you down try reading "To Build a Fire". You will feel the chill before the end of the first page!  Fifth caller with the source of this quote gets a free Key Largo dive excursion for two on the "Rox/sea Music" as soon as the wind lays down:

“I would rather my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry-rot,” said this author, who looked like a young Warren Beatty. “The function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days trying to prolong them. I shall use my time!”

Stay safe, be prepared, and serve your martinis well chilled...

- season

It was a quiet winter in the florida keys. Our only problem has been a lack of rain. We have no rain here while the mainland has had at least some showers in the afternoon. We are under drought restrictions and the relief doesn't look good. The water temp is high for this time of year as the air temp has also been up close to setting records. We hope this does not mean anything towards the future. We need rain but we are particular as to how we get it during this time of year.
