Greetings,
Since Jan 1, 2011 to date my weather station records just over 4" total rain. Grounds are brown in most areas & the weeds are dying off fast.
Seems they are the first to go (yeah for that).
Looking back through 34 years of rain fall records the only year that closely matches these figures is 1997 with 2.18" for the same period but in April 1977 the drought ended. Will that happen again?
From looks of satellite conditions it doesn't appear to be so. Folks are starting to watch cistern levels & being careful with water use.

Can't really say Nevis is in a drought situation but so far this year less that 4" of rain has fallen.
The weather has been cool & continues to be quite cool in the evenings. Day time high still low to mid 80's. Sailing has been just about perfect with good breezes everyday.

Jet Stream over USA still into the deep south keeping the Caribbean cool.
Nevis still down into the very low 70's at night & low 80's for day time highs. Predicted to remain that way for another month. When the jet stream shifts into it's summer pattern we will know it here.

Greetings All,
A lot of folks are asking me about this wind thing, like continuing "Christmas Winds".
The Caribbean has had constant Hi Pressure areas north of us all winter causing the increased trade wind effect. Perhaps the strongest El Nino in 10 years has some effect on this ? It's predicted to die down in 2-3 months.
On another note I've attached the latest rain fall records from 1977- 2010 for those interested.
Driest in blue, wettest in red.

Seems Nevis will not see much sun & warm temperatures this month either. The trend continues with gray overcast days of showers, downpours, winds & cool temperatures.
Maybe today we will see some sun?
Doesn't seem like a fair deal for winter vacationers but if they came from cold freezing weather this will seem like paradise. To us expats it's down right cold outside.

What a dismal day, it has not stopped raining here whether it be downpours or drizzle high winds and none at all.
We are in Cades Bay overlooking the narrows to St Kitts, well that keeps disappearing in the cloud and haze.
Hope it clears for tomorrow although last years new years eve it absolutely tipped down
It reminds me of the time I lived in Wale(UK) All I need is thousands of sheep.

Although is looks menacing via satellite the National Hurricans Center has it's path well south of Nevis.
We are in the 10%-20% cone for probability of winds of tropical storm force winds >= 39 MPH.

Nevis continues to get soaked with driving rains. As of 4pm the weather station reports 7.75" of rain has fallen since 2-Oct.
The satellite images show this system just not moving much. I'm thinking we have 2-3 more days of continued rain.
I've attached 3 photo's taken this afternoon of road damage. Local news also showed several homes flooded with mud from the rushing & over flowing ghauts.
There is a lot of main road damage as the photos will show. With poor road maintenance & no asphalt on island it will be a problem for weeks to come.

Just had a look at the weather maps & this low pressure area over the northern Leewards just won't go away !!!!
Another day & night of solid rain. The total for Oct now reads 7.75". Last evening it was a solid wall of rain for hours.
I have a ghaut running through the garden down the driveway & out into the road. Bad enough I had to open the drive entryway gates to allow the piled up debris to flow out & away.
Called dam busting I guess? Also called dam rain!

National Hurricane Center was right on when they predicted "locally heavy rains for the northern Leewards and area"
Weather station recorded just over 3.75" of rain in a 24 hour period, falling at the rate of 2" per hour at times.
Lots of thunder & lightening bolts all around. Quite a wild ride. Dog, cats humans all huddled together. All is calm now with gray over cast skies & the threat of rain at any time. Looks like we'll be in this stuff for 1-2 days as it slowly moves to the NW.

Good night everyone,
The weather today in the 'Queen of the Caribees'
started cloudy with hazy sunshine. As the afternoon drew on showers began
to develop and as evening came they became heavy with thunder and lightning. The
wind was from the Caribbean side a West South-westerly which is
unusual.
My prayers and best wishes to all on Bermuda as
they are starting to experience Tropical Storm winds now and hurricane force
winds from about 4pm Sunday.

Good morning everyone,
Awakened to a glorious day in paradise on the Queen of
the Caribees, Nevis. You can only prepare for what nature can cook up and throw
at you as far as the hurricane season is concerned. On a 36 square mile island
you don't have to many places to hide. It would seem that Hurricane
Igor has decided to turn towards the north which is good for the Leeward
Islands, but looking at the forecasts not to good for Bermuda. No doubt we will
get some rough seas from this one but it's better than a close encounter. Anyway
I've added a picture from this morning of the view that greeted
me.

Well I thought I had spent the last eight hours in Wales UK, we have had torrential rain and Gusting winds since 7 am today the only difference on Wales has been the temperature a cool 28C here not a freezing 9C. Last night was stormy Thunder Lightening and torrential rain but it has cleared the air.

Looks like Igor is on it's way to becoming a hurricane. Attached a picture of it's projected path. Possible outer bands could swipe Nevis & the Northern Leeward Islands.
Next Monday / Tuesday time frame will have a better (closer) defined path & it's movement westward. Right now it's projected path well North from Nevis.

A very good morning to all,
The remains of Gaston dropped by last night in the
guise of thunder, lightning and heavy showers. This morning I am peering out
into a 'fog' - reminds me of London, England in the 1960's - from my
location in the Nevis Peak foothills. It is probably classed as vey low cloud
(800 feet above sea level) and I am still hearing the odd rumble of
thunder. A picture of the 'view' is attached looking towards Saddle Hill -
I think  .

Now getting a breeze building up as evening draws
on. No rainfall as yet so our 'Mystery Guest' Gaston has not made an appearance
as yet. We have had a some cloud but no rain as yet during the day. I have added
a 'sunset scene' that is shows cloud cover in the direction
of Montserrat. Not the sunset itself but the sun's reflection from the

Nevis today is hot with bright hazy sunshine. We had a heavy shower about 1 am this morning. The Nevis Disaster Management Department have posted an advisory concerning Gaston:
ATTENTION: THE GENERAL PUBLIC IS ADVISED TO CLOSELY MONITOR THE REMNANTS OF "GASTON" FOR POSSIBLE RE-DEVELOPMENT. MARINE FORECASTS PREDICT "GASTON" TO BE NEAR THE NORTHERN LEEWARD ISLANDS IN 72 HOURS.
So Gaston is playing a now you see him, now you don't and now you see him again game!
We wait and see who he is going to drop in on.

I have been for a stroll on Pinney's beach this morning a lot of the sand has gone and uncovered rocks and bones from the Ancient cemetery. Attached are some pics of the beach and the stranded yacht.
Its lovely day today warm and sunny with a small breeze and finally the sea has calmed.

Good afternoon from Nevis,
All quiet today with no action from Tropical Storm
Fiona. The wind has been very light and the sky is overcast. We had a mild
short shower about one hour ago. Beyond that nothing to report weather-wise. A
nice respite after Earl. Now to keep an eye on Tropical Depression #9 as it
makes its westward journey across the Atlantic towards the Leeward Islands.
Early days yet but time passes quickly!

Min pressure: 998 mb
Latest projections from NOAA puts FIONA at 18.2N 60.9W (8am).
Her path is 295 degrees at 15mph. This will put the center 112 miles at it's closest point to Nevis.
The strongest winds are in the NE quadrant. Nevis is well away from that location.
Present conditions high hazy clouds with little or no wind.

Latest data on Fiona will put the center 52 miles away from Nevis. That point is 196 miles from present location of 16.9N 59.4W.
Moving at 20mph will be in our neighborhood in 9-10 hrs. Looks like mostly a lot of rain coming this way.

Good Afternoon,
Just got everything working again. Power went down about
02:30 hours Monday morning and restored 14:00 hours. Cable internet went down
and was restored 11:00 hours this morning. From the fairly quiet at 01:00 hours
Monday things soon ramped up. most of the action was from 03:00 to 10:00
hours with very strong gusting winds and of course a lot of rain. All in
one piece here in the foothills of Nevis Peak.
The wind was mainly from the North East probably as I'm
in the Lee of Nevis Peak. Main damage seems to have occurred to the numerous
Cedar Trees in the locale. Added a few pictures from yesterday afternoon if your
interested. Now back to my lumberjack job

Latest (3pm) position puts Earl 176 miles NW of Nevis. Less & less winds blowing. No rain.
Haven't heard any reports of storm surge damage & not inclined to travel about to find out. Will see about that tomorrow am & report if significant.

Their wires are strung below the HV lines so I guess with Internet service (ASDL) all poles must be standing upright, well some always lean without guy lines placed to counteract the change of wires directions it's just a matter of time before the poles follow the change.

Haven't heard of any major damage. Just a let of small branches about. Not sure about storm surge damage to the west side beaches. With winds out of the west for some time now I'm wondering about that?

Since 3-4 am very windy & gusty. Still with Internet service so no poles are down.
No power - I'm on my generator power so I can post.
Weather station records highest gust at 62 mph. Collected 3.75 inches of rain so far from storm.

Good (very early) Morning,
Well it is past midnight and we are into Monday
morning. Things are still pretty calm on Nevis - wind speed is variable
with occasional gusts but nothing too strong. No major rainfall since
my last report and I am still seeing occasional flashes of lightning
but no thunder.
Tracking the 'Closest Point of Approach'
(CPA) shows 84.5 miles at 06:42 hours (AST), so we wait and see if anything
else will come our way. At the moment things are looking pretty
good.

Goodnight fro Nevis!
We had a long heavy downpour with high winds
around 9 pm and an electrical storm for the last 2 hours with little
thunder. Things seem to have settled down now with the wind back to a
blustery breeze. Still seeing the occasional flashes of lightening in the sky. A
little way to go but we seem to have been spared the worst at the
moment.
As you can see power and internet (via cable)
have been working so far without interruption - this gives a good indication how
'mild' things have been.

Goodnight Everyone,
We have had a few squally showers and thunder and
lightning off and on for the last couple of hours. The main pyrotechnics
have been off shore to the south-east. The cloud speeds before sunset
looked quiet fast. Being located in the lee of Nevis Peak the they seem to
come around each side of the mountain from the north and and end up in a
swirling mass over Saddle Hill in the south. Fascinating to watch. Ground
wind speed hasn't matched the clouds and varies between a strong breeze and
higher speed gusts, especially when a shower starts.
It would be nice if it kept like this for the
rest of the night.

Things are moving on at a pace in preparation of
the arrival of Hurricane Earl
The Vance W.
Amory International Airport closes at 4 pm today. LIAR and WinAir have cancelled
all flights until further notice. Coastal Air's last flight will be at 3:45 pm
from Nevis.
All St. Kitts
- Nevis ferry services have been suspended until further
notice.
The Wind Farm
turbines at Maddens were lowered to the ground late this
morning.
LIME have
sent out a text message to its cell customer's reminding them to fully
charge their phone and check if they have enough 'top-up' if they are on a
PAYG plan. They have also sent a reminder to internet customers
to unplug their internet modems and telephone in case of lightning
strikes.
At the moment
it is overcast and the cloud has started to thicken so that there is no
more hazy sunshine on the south side of the island. No rain as yet but the
breeze is becoming stronger and more gusty.

Guess I lost my internet connection after hitting send???
Latest track will put Earl 44=45 miles North of Nevis. With each update it appears Earl is moving further North & away from us.
The strongest winds are in the northern quadrant & we being on the southern side should feel less of the hurricane force winds.
Right now getting gusty with 15-17 mph breezes with a hazy sun.

The projected path of Earl will put the center just south of Barbuda & just North of Saba or about 30 miles NNE of Nevis.
NOAA is saying a gradual turn to the North as it tracks westward which will move the center track further away from Nevis.
Can't say how much until the next update of 2pm.

Well its just past midnight here on Nevis and it
is still very pleasant. Cloud is building up and moving at some speed
with the wind blowing in from the north-east. The moon is still visible
through the broken cloud. The breeze is starting to pick up at ground
level.

We had a long downpour yesterday but things are back to
normal today with lots of sun and 'blue' - blue sky and blue sea.
TS Earl is cranking up and predictions indicate a
near miss at the moment but I'll work through the supplies check list
anyway.....

Good afternoon to you all,
This morning started off hot and sunny, but
as the day has progressed cloud has built up and a stiff breeze has built up. I
can see showers passing by the south of the island but as yet nothing has
dropped in on us. In fact it is becoming quite cool as evening draws in and the
breeze picks up from the west.
Added a couple of photos - our local troop of
Vervet Monkeys 'liming' this afternoon and the cloud build up over the
south of the island. We are probably in for some showers tonight.
It looks as the systems are ready to roll off the
African coast down Hurricane Alley so time to do those final checks just in case

Greetings from Nevis
Hot day today with a lot of haze. Still getting a breeze
from the mountain to keep cool but it is humid. As an aside I've included a
photo of the wind farm on Nevis located at Maddens, St James Parish. Eight
turbines in total producing a maximum of 1.1 MW (about 1/6th of the islands
average power requirement). I have included a photo taken today showing four of
the turbines with a hazy view of the sea/sky as a backdrop. Each turbine is
about 160 feet from the base to the middle of the engine and the fan blades are
about 75 feet in length. So it will be interesting to see how robust they are
during a TS or Hurricane. Besides that they should help reduce our
electricity bills a little.

G'Night All,
A hot day with very little breeze. Not a day to be
inside the house. Spent most of the day sitting on the veranda in the shade
catching the small amount of breeze that was coming off Nevis Peak.
Sunshine with clouds most of the day. Had some rumblings of thunder and cloud to
cloud lightning to the south west of the island this evening. I have attached a
sunset picture as sun 'coloured' the clouds to the south-west.
Well tomorrow is Sun-day - so we shall see

I can vouch for Frank's report on the weather yesterday afternoon I was on the BA in flight from the UK, the Pilot had three attempts to land because of the dire situation on the lucky third he made it then we had a soaking getting to Nevis, these hardships can be put up with, today is warm and sunny what a difference a day makes.

Now heading into August and it's the last day of
Culturama 2010 - yesterday and today are public holidays. The weather has
been fair with showers mainly at night. We had a good downpour from about
midnight last night with gusty winds. Things have calmed down this morning with
the sun attempting to break through the grey shroud of cloud that is covering us
and there is still a gusty breeze blowing in from the Atlantic side. Beyond
that, we are keeping an eye on TS Colin and waiting to see where his travels
take him.

Well tonight we have been getting a good pounding
and soaking from the rain for the last 3 hours. Lots of loud Thunder and flashes
of lightening - ground strikes and cloud to cloud. Electricity went of for
about 20 minutes after one close encounter with a lightening bolt. So things are
rocking and rolling in little Nevis tonight. I suspect possible flash
flooding with soil and rocks being washed onto the main road from
run-offs and of course bigger potholes on the half mile section
by Cades Bay.

A blast of heavy rain & big gusts of wind blew through here last evening about 8pm.
Spent the better part of two hours this am removing broken branches off some of the whimsy trees, then off to picking up 200-300 mangos scattered about for the Tyson Egg Farm hogs.

Well the 'weather' finally arrived in the early hours of
Sunday with some heavy showers. Had a few more showers Monday morning and a fair
afternoon. The showers are back tonight (Monday - approx 10 pm). Garden is
now looking green and the grass needs cutting again - can't complain though we
were in drought conditions a couple of months ago.

It has been overcast all day with very few breaks for the
sun to shine through. Looking out across the Caribbean Sea there is a lot of
haze. Added a picture showing how cloudy it is and what seems like a
shower. Showers seem to be out to sea at the moment with no rainfall
here on the borders of the Parishes of St. George and St. John. The
view is towards the South-east.
Looks as if we might be getting some 'weather' over the
weekend coming up from the Windwards.

Another wild night on Nevis with cracks of lightening & booming thunder from midnight to 3-4 am.
Weather station reports 1.75" of rain, most falling between midnight & 3am.
Ghauts were roaring. A drive on the main road this am had the road crews out cleaning up where the ghauts pass under the road - clogged up pipes & water will find another way.
Sunny, hot 91 deg F. & humid 71% RH.

Hi everyone,
Nevis still very hot and humid. Carried out some repairs
this morning to my fence and more water was coming out of me through sweat than
I could drink back in! Up in the 'highlands' (800 feet above sea level) I'm used
to the cool breezes coming over Nevis peak, but not today. The breeze
was negligible and that made it hot in the house as well as outside with the
temperature in the upper 80's F. Well, the good lady wife has made
some fresh lemonade to make up for it which is going down a treat. There is also
a thick haze that is obscuring our view of the blue Caribbean
Sea. We finally had a rain shower at 9:40 pm.
The weather must be to much for our local troop of
Vervet Monkeys who seem to be content in just lying and sitting under the trees
in my yard for most of the day.
Nevis Peak was surrounded by wispy grey clouds
rather than having its usual 'cap' - see attached photo.

Greetings All,
Another sweltering day here. Recorded a high of 88.5 deg & that's at 500 ft altitude. In town it had to be over 90 deg.
The humidity is hovering around 75 RH. Put those two numbers together & you can stand still, not move & still sweat buckets.
All the village dogs & cats are acting like they are paralyzed. You mean I have to move out of the way as you pass? You get that dirty look from them as you do.

Greetings from the 'Highlands'. Today has been dry after
days with showers. The late afternoon can be said to be on the 'chilly' side by
Caribbean standards. Looking to the South-west there is a haze over the
Caribbean and to the East some dark grey clouds coming off the Atlantic. For the
first time in months the local family of Vervet Monkeys have not put in an
appearance. Probably because they have cleared all of the Soursop trees. Next
big event for them will be mango season - many of the 'wild' mango trees have
blossomed and are now budding fruit.
Added a couple of photos - cloud to the east over the
old mill and view of the Caribbean to the south west.

Greetings from Nevis,
Hasn't been much sun & nice weather for the past 2 + weeks. Seems we get teased with blue sky & sun then the next hour it's clouds & showers.
Been more clouds than rain. Just dreary, gloomy weather.
Looking at satellite images we look to be in glorious sun but that just not what's happening.

A big hello from Nevis. Changeable weather is with us at
the moment as we are experiencing some showers this afternoon. Up in the
'highlands' the clouds have come down to meet us and we have been in a fog. A
couple of pictures to illustrate the weather - 1. Picture of Saddle Hill to the
south of the island 2. Nevis Peak totally shrouded in cloud.
