- Lots of flights cancelled due to Montserrat volcano ash
  • By Francisco Echegaray <fechegaray at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Wed, 30 Dec 2009 05:09:25 +0000

Today we had another hot day with a hazy skies in the San Juan metro area as well as other parts of Puerto Rico.
More than ten incoming and departing passenger and cargo flights were cancelled in several of the island airports, due to
the flow of volcanic ash coming from the Soufrier Hills Volcano on the island of Montserrat -400kms to our southeast!

- Rain Rain Go Away...

  • Date: Mon, 16 Nov 2009 21:10:54 -0400
The entire San Juan metro area is experiencing heavy downpours yesterday and today, dumping in excess of 5 inches of rain in tow hours, Sunday and I'm sure we have at least that much, today. Many cities are experiencing flooding. A local mall closed Sunday, because of flooding in the streets surrounding the area. We have had several thunderstorms and steady rain showers over areas that already have saturated hillsides. The spells dangerous landslide conditions. But, most Puertoriccans take it in stride and carry the necessary umbrellas, plastic bags or cardboard boxes to protect themselves. Rain gear typically worn in the US is unheard of, here as our rains usually only last minutes. And so, everything green will be growing as if on vitamins over the next week as Ida pulls her ratty tail out the Caribbean this week.

- Flood over metropolitan San Juan area after heavy rain and thunderstorms
  • By Francisco Echegaray <fechegaray at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Sun, 15 Nov 2009 20:52:45 +0000
Strong  rains ocurred this afternoon in the metropolitan San Juan zone that provoked the closing of several routes, the overflowing of the river Piedras and floods in hearths and business establishments. The commercial center San Patricio Plaza, in Guaynabo, had to be closed. Some establishments of the first level were flooded and remained without service of electrical energy.   The intense rain provoked urban floods in zones of little drainage in the area of Puerto Nuevo and next to the commercial center Plaza Las Americas in San Juan.   The National Weather Service explained that a thunderstorm was due to a low pressure system combined with the daily heat and humidity. In addition it was also informed that in the area of Cupey toward the south of San Juan, the rain was most intense, registering a remarkable 5 inches in a period of 2 hours.   It is expected that rains will continue until early evening, though the strongest part already passed.  Meterorologist Ernesto morales warned that for tomorrow there are similar conditions as those of today so more thunderstoms and rain are expected.

Salutes!

Erika was a Tropical Storm without characteristic of real Storm. The meteorologists never were in a point. We were seen that the transform of Erika was continuing in a bad weather. But this learn to us that the nature work in the different manner that the men things. I believe that Erika never was a Storm, only a bad weather. Her movement was unpredictable and the influence of the atmosphere was inappropriate to make a real Storm. It’ was most early to declare this phenomenon as Storm. I understand, when the NHC intent to safe properties and persons for all interest. I admit those guys do a magnificent work, day & night. But we need to put more mind in the nature that she want to say us (Warning Global Heat). The pattern that the nature work is changing, and we have to look that to be able  forecast with good certain.  Well, now in Puerto Rico are down a heavy rains, I guess for 2 or 3 days. Erika remains now are cause Flash Floods in the East part of our Island. We take with care this rains in the wait that the sun going up again.

Hi all:

very heavy rain and lightning now in San Juan and elsewhere in PR. The center of Ex-Erika just SW of the island is bringing in loads of moisture and Flash Flood Warnings are activated in 4 large areas in the NE and S/SE. There is also a Special Marine Warning because of water spouts in the South indicated by radar data. One can even see the cells on the current radar image - just South of La Pagera. Will be a very rainy day with lots of flooding. Better not to drive too far. I assume the 65 near Loquillo will be flooded because the water from the rainforest comes down there from the hills.

Cheers, Kai

- San Juan Weather Update

  • Date: Wed, 2 Sep 2009 17:58:07 -0700 (PDT)
At 8:30 PM Puerto Rico continues to be under a Tropical Storm Watch.  The local media is expecting that on the 5:00 AM advisory this watch will be upgraded to a Tropical Storm Warning.  Of all the years I have monitored tropical storm systems this is probably one in which the NHC or the local NWS office does not have a good handle of what this system will do next.

The last intermediate advisory we are looking at a nearly stationary system.  What will happen next is anybodys guess!  One thing is for sure, we are awaiting a big rain event in excess of 10+ inches in some areas of Puerto Rico.

I will try to update as soon as possible.  In the meantime for all of you who are Twitter fans I am sending regular updates on my page http://www.twitter.com/caribnews

Til tomorrow morning!

Hi all:

so, amazingly what was a L became a TS in one advisory. Not that anyone here believed that it was not a TD at least a while ago. If it would have formed close to the mainland, that thing would have had a name a while ago. The good news is the shear and all the low pressure systems in its path. The bad news is, that I can only hope that the track predictions are ok. The islands in the very NE may get some. Here in PR it is pretty unlikely we see much. Which is good - we did have enough rain. The soil is still pretty saturated here from some major downpours a couple days ago.  On Saturday I was driving through 30-40 cm of water in San Juan. So, we do not need rain (unlike some of the islands) at all right now.

Let's hope Erika stays clear of land.

Cheers, kai

- Expect a Tropical Storm Tomorrow to form...

Hi all:

well I was wrong a loft this year with my predictions, but I don't think I will be wrong with this one. 94L shows signs of organizing (a little more North luckily) and the outflow in the NW sector seems to get defined. Since the thing moves NW I would not be surprised if tomorrow it will be a storm....if it isn't already.  The good news is, that it seems to be more North than predicted. I like that trend to continue. I do not think it will hit PR, but I would be concerned if I lived on the smaller islands E of us. But perhaps - let us hope - the North trend continues and it stays clear of the islands...... In the satellite images there are now clear signs of thunder storms popping up around some sort of circular region in the center.......Dave is right, the thing has BAD written all over it.

Cheers, Kai

Dear all: I have to agree with the assessment of Dave on 94L. It is the time of year again. Fortunately, I do think that development will be rather fast in this case and the thing will go more North. Today it already showed healthy signs of strengthening and by tomorrow we should know more. Well, let's hope.

Good Morning,
Ana has arrived to our south and according to the radar should cross the southwest corner of the island later today.  The early rain bands are bringing an abundance of rain to the entire island, before she "breaks up"over the mountains, as many forecasters are predicting.  Even so, this depression is bringing very wet weather with it.
Right now, we have moderate to heavy rain in Levittown with no winds to speak of, but lots of lightning and thunder.

Buenos Dias,

Hi: just did read Dave's good morning. Even though it is correct that interactions with land typically lead to degrading of the storms, I believe that just last year or so one formed directly over us basically - came in as tropical wave and left as storm. Don't remember the name, but Francisco probably does. So, while it is probably mostly true, it isn't always. From what I see I wouldn't be surprised if Ana would strengthen right now.

Good morning:

heavy thunder storms and rain now in the San Juan area and - if the radar is correct - all along the North shore. Not sure where Ana is right now, but it might be kind off over us. The satellite images seem to indicate that it is reforming. Not sure whether Ana is over and going to be a low soon. The amount of rain and thunder is substantial right now. I am not sure whether it was such a great idea to let all kids go to school - the roads are a complete mess. Trying to make some images later.

Well I was expecting some rain today but really not until at least mid morning or noon....so I was surprised to see just a few minutes befor 7 A.M.  some heavy showers accompanied by thunder and lightning here over Rio Piedras (San Juan).   There were also some wind gusts, not too strong but noticeable, along with the heavy downpour.   I checked on the satellite picture and what remains of Ana is already affecting the east of P.R..   It looks like it has strenghened some what judging from the picture.  This TD is also traveling VERY fast.    Yesterday the weatherpeople were saying that the TD would be at 2 PM in the position which it is NOW at 7:30AM so there is something weird here...  As I am typing another band just got here and the rain has pick up strengh again....Well I hope TD Ana keeps her fast pace and leaves us very quickly as well... Best wishes to all.

Greetings:

Two tropical systems now after some quiet time. I am with Dave on the assessment of the systems - it is way too early to be not concerned, in particular with respect to Bill, in Puerto Rico. I would suggest that everyone urgently starts preparations with respect to water, batteries, canned foods, medication, etc. etc. before everyone is running to the stores. I do remember that our electricity seems to be going out even when we are not hit directly. Thus, it might be a good idea to BBQ tomorrow and get rid of some frozen goods.

We have again other season of storms & Hurricanes. We have a communicate of the Center of Meteorology of Puerto Rico. We need be ready to see Ana in the area of our vicinity. Now it activate the season, but I think the nature is late. I was looking to the Mexico gulf, but not have a storm yet. That is rare because the month of May & June is the storm there. Wow, something wrong in the climate in our hemisphere.  I guess that this season will be short or so long… to December.

Take care….. with Ana….. and the others.

Hi everyone,
Welcome to summer 2009.  It's summer just about everywhere in the northern hemisphere, now.  Puerto Rico is no exception.  With our 13 hour days and 11 hour nights,  we have our share of heat and we love it.  Days are 93-95 degrees with a nice easterly breeze to keep things comfortable, and at night, 79-81 degrees under fairly clear skies with only a few scattered showers across the island.  Here in Levittown as the sun is setting at almost 7pm it is 90 degrees and I expect that restaurant patrons in Mayagüez will see a green flash at sunset unless that "blob"on the radar in the western Caribbean obscures their sunset tonight.

Stay prepared, bendigate y nos vemos.

Summer has arrived in Puerto Rico with today's local temperatures of 93 degrees, partly sunny, some local showers, some thunder, and lots of humidity.  It's hard to beleive it's THAT season, already.  It has been rather wet this spring with plenty of showers to nourish my flower gardens, and the evergrowing lawn.  Some towns have had local flooding, that has resolved quickly.

I returned from a 10 day trip to Pennsylvania where we encountered 27 degrees at night and 80-somethings during the daylight hours.  It was nice to see the area green and growing.

I know most Puerto Ricans do not like to prepare, whether its for a left hand turn on the road or a major storm.  Most people in Puerto Rico will procrastinate until it's a sure thing.    So I encourage my neighbors, friends and colleagues to start making preparations for the 2009 season by checking generators, candle supplies, water supplies, non-perishable foods, clothing, and sandbags.  Don't forget Fluffy and Spot's food and supplies, too.  Pets don't know how to prepare for such things.

I hope and pray for another mild season for Puerto Rico and so far, Monserrate's Soufriere Hills volcano is cooperating with a blanket of ash and hopefully the Sahara will supply it's Desert dust as well.

God's blessings to all and be careful, be prepared.

Bendigate,
Eric
