("doing the anti-hurricane dance")

- it's finally raining in Curacao!
  • By Elton Sint Jago <curacaomaster at yahoo.com>

After months of drought, it has been raining a lot today on the island. We
haven't seen a single sun-ray today (wednesday april 6th). On Monday we had
some scattered showers already, yesterday it was overcast the whole day and it
started raining in the evening. The amount of rain varied a lot throughout the
island, roughly between 15 and 50mm (0,6 to 2 inches).
The rain was a pleasant surprise and much of the population is feeling happy
about the rain! They are forecasting more rain until the weekend, but it'll
probably be less that what we got today.

After much needed showers, things are back to dry, although no Blue skies to speak of. It has been getting gradually darker, but still little to no precipitation to speak of.

Watching the local radar and there are a few showers to are south, let's hope they creep closer and surprise us with some much needed rain.

- Rain, hopefully more to come

After months of waiting, we've finally received some much needed rain. From the looks of things we might get a few showers late tonight or early next morning. It is going to take a lot more to make up for the below average rain fall. I do have a feeling that we're going to have a very wet season ahead.

The low pressure system to the left of us is producing thunderstorms and it is
stationary at the moment. The NHC synopsis (see below) indicates that it will
gradually move in the opposite direction and away from Curacao. Still 2 out of
11 computer models show a slim chance of development (9 out of 11 showing zero
development). Since any forecast beyond 48 hours associated with any weather
disturbance left of Curacao (aka leftie) is quite "iffy"...let's just keep
watching it till it is completely gone and out of our back yard.

ps: are you getting ready for the Orionids meteor shower on Wednesday Oct 21??

Who would ever have thought that a "leftie" would appear on the satellite maps
right about now in the hurricane season. See attached file. Okay enough of the
sarcasm... Well folks there it is at 12 Zulu on Monday Oct. 19, 2009, right
smack in between of Belize and Colombia, thankfully still a long ways due west
of Curacao.

The good news is that 9 out of 11 computer models (that our friends at the Navy
and others ran...) do not show any significant development. The bad news is
that 2 out of 11 models do show this disturbance strengthening after 7 days,
then move N, then NE and then turn N again and then move NW in the direction of
the Mexican Gulf. Does this pattern look familiar? (it should) But that is 168
hours into the future, so lots of variables have not been taken into account
since anything beyond 48 hours turns iffy...

Once more...nine out of eleven...I do like them apples... show no significant
influence on Curacao. Not throwing caution into the wind, keep an eye on it
till 11 out of 11 models rule out any Omarish - repeats

Another sunny day behind us at Curacao. With just 6 weeks to go in this
hurricane season I must say its been pretty quiet down here in
Curacao...everyday sun and cool sea breezes and no meaningful rain to speak of.
In the pacific on the other hand there has been no pause whatsoever. Week in
and week out storms have been given birth in the pacific. Look at hurricane
rick...just a few days old and already packing huge winds and has a very clear
eye...

Last week we saw a forecast with lots of rain starting midnight last
Friday...but nada...nada now...the SAL (Sahara air layer) stepped up and
swallow up all the moisture in the air. Aside from a few foot soldiers sliding
off the west African coast and moving westwards across the Atlantic, not much
activity to speak of...it could just as well have been may right now, and you
wouldn't know the difference.

- A rainy morning for Curaçao
  • By Elton Sint Jago <curacaomaster at yahoo.com>
  • Date: Thu, 8 Oct 2009 21:11:19 -0700 (PDT)
Goodday everyone,

October started already, which on the ABC-islands normally means: rain season.
It lasts until January.

Wednesday 7 Oct. was a completely overcast day, basically the sun rays didn't
broke through the whole day here where I live. The maximum temperature didn't
reach more than 28,7°C. No rain fell though, it would come later in the night!

Curacao woke up this morning (Thu. 8 Oct.) with a cool, rainy morning! In the
early night it started raining, we had a heavy showers here where I live (near
the south coast) around 2:00-2:30AM. Around 3:00-3:30 there was an very active
area of thunderstorms, unfortunately, developing north and also east of Curacao
(between Curacao and Bonaire). Most of it stayed above the sea for a long time
but then it later spread over both islands. The rain was light to moderate. The
temperature on my thermometer dropped to 22,8°C early morning. The western part
of Curacao received more rain than the rest of the island today. Late morning
the skies started clearing slowly and the sun came through. Maximum temperature
I measured was 31,2°C.

Kind regards,

E. Sint Jago
Willemstad, Curaçao.

- thunderstorms abound
  • By info at kunuku.net
  • Date: 8 Oct 2009 10:24:58 -0000
At 03:15 am thunderstorms arrived at Curacao, and only at Curacao it seems when
you look at the weather satellite. At 06:21 the thunderstrom still rages on
with so far no ground to air lightning and only intra cloud lightning. Showers
are reported to be dense and heavy at Fuik whereas light to no rain at
Brievengat and periodic medium showers at Banda Abou. Since the rather small
thunderstorm is staionary, it is not certain which direction it will head out
and when it will move away.

- rain came and left again
  • By info at kunuku.net
  • Date: 3 Oct 2009 18:49:28 -0000
Dark grey skies and thunder rolled over Curacao and now have left the island
again after having dropped many buckets of water in some places while other
areas received a few sprinkles or nothing at all. The radar shows more dark
clouds on their way to Curacao from the South American mainland in a few hours
but the infrared radar and satellite maps show only high clouds with
insufficient water vapor to cause heavy downpours again. If rain does fall...it
won't be like this morning and will occur briefly between 2 to 5 minutes
because the clouds are approaching quite fast from the Venezuelan mainland and
will shoot over us rapidly and head towards open sea.

- rain on its way

  • Date: 3 Oct 2009 02:11:55 -0000
A broad area of rain is currently heading from west to East towards Aruba,
Curacao and Bonaire. This front has the potential to cause what we locals call
wawaru's. So close your home windows facing west, and get your rain collecting
drums ready... let's catch every single drop we can duirng this rainless
huriricane season for the ACB islands.

- finally a rainy day!
  • By Elton Sint Jago <curacaomaster at yahoo.com>

Goodday everyone,

finally this island got a significant amount of rainfall, which started around
3AM where I live and lasted until about 12PM. The rain was varying from light
to moderate, with some thunder. People reacted happy everywhere: at work, at
home, in the neighbourhood and on Facebook!

The rainy weather really cooled down the heat of the last few weeks. The
temperature I registered, dropped from 35,4° C Sunday afternoon to 24,1° C
early this morning....more than 11° C difference! The maximum today reached
30,2° C. There is a possibility for more (thunder-) showers tonight and
tomorrow morning, let's hope so!

Curacao received some rain in the morning hours on Monday varying from light to

After long hot days, that just didn't seem to want to make way for October, it has finally began to rain. It has been raining for what seems like a good part of the night
and stilling raining this morning. As a result the temperature is a stark contrast to what  we've been experiencing yesterday during the daylight hours. The skies in the direction of Bonaire look dark, which is
a good indication that more rain is on the way. On the weather maps it there seems to be a blob over Bonaire, so I think they are getting the strongest part of this weather.  Hoping that more comes this direction.

Drive safe,

The blob at Latitude= 18.46° N Longitude= 81.18° W is still developing in similar fashion as Lenny and now also spinning clockwise...just like Lenny did.

The weather buoy at http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=42058 provides data relevant about this system for the next 48 hours.

  • By info at kunuku.net
  • Date: 23 Sep 2009 13:14:41 -0000
As feared early this morning...  thunderstorms rolled off the Colombian mainland into the Southern Caribbean Sea and did not dissipate. The conditions are not favourable for the birth of something similar as Omar last year, but that is what we thought about the systme that have birth to Omar as well...

so we'll still keep a close eye on Latitude= 12.69° N Longitude= 81.83° W.

- leftie ayeee!!
  • By info at kunuku.net
  • Date: 23 Sep 2009 04:44:53 -0000
Even though it's normal for this time of the year to experience extreme high
tide between 4 and 6 pm, we really do not need a weak leftie to develop SW of
us...so let's keep an eye on that low pressure area of 1006 over the northern
coast of Colombia which will drop into the Caribbean Sea in a few hours...

- got 2nd-hand GPR for sale?
  • By info at kunuku.net
  • Date: 20 Sep 2009 17:52:38 -0000
Nothing much happeneing down here in Curacao. Everyday HOT weather and sun sun sun sun, cool night, then sun sun sun ....pretty much normal this time of year

Our concern between end of september thru end of October is the development of lefties such as the case was with Joan 18 years ago, Lenny 10 years ago and Omar last year. So we are focussing our atention on anything developing between the coast of Western Venezuela and Honduras which is heading in a easterly or northeasterly direction with a strength of at least a half Category one... which could reappear on our radar 7 to 9 years from today. But keep in mind that this is just my personal wishfull thinking and not based on any scientific fact...

The hot weather we are experiencing in september , october, and november Curacao's eco system actually NEEDS to incubate and hatch the turtle eggs on our 78 beaches and sandy coves. For a sound ecosystem which we are a part of, we NEED turtles.

In the past we (Curacao Wildlife) used dogs to sniff out locations of turtle eggs in case we missed a nightly egg laying activity, and mark them for protection/conservation, and to monitor later on how many hatclings reached the sea on their own. We don't carry the weak to sea, because only the strong should survive to gaurantee a strong species. Currently we are looking for a second hand GPR, preferably with rechargeable batteries and depth meaurments between 30 cm (12 inches) up to 200 cm (7 ft), wwhich is able to detect an single object of minum size 2 inches (one egg) and 24 inches (total size of nest with eggs).

Does anyone know where I can obtain a second hand GPR? Email me!

Yesterday the skies suddenly got dark, on the satelite it seemed like this one small cell.

Very impress cloud to ground lightning, with some very near strikes. Heavy rain too during all of this.
It only lasted 30 minutes. The weather maps seem to indicate a repeat today?

There are a few cumulonimbus clouds bearing down on Curacao that are arriving from the NW at this very moment within the next hour to an hour and a half. Most likely event will be a short period of strong windgusts and a curtain of rain trailing right behind...

What's the weather like today in Curacao?

Well my friends...IT'S HOT!! HOT!! HOT!!

The temperature scale reads 32 degrees celsius, but due to the 59 to 66 percent humidity it feels like 36 degrees... in the shade!!!

It is smoldering hot with 100% blue skies.

In the morning we had some light rain around 5 to 7 am, but thereafter nothing but sun and heat...

The locals say that when it gets this hot, rain is on its way to cool us down...so well see about that...maybe the big blob that is located due east of Trinidad will bring some cooling rain...

- So what have I been doing?
  • From: Marcus DeMaaijer <demaaijer at yahoo.com>
  • Date: Fri, 24 Jul 2009 16:33:26 -0700 (PDT)
Most people who know me...know that I login on stormcarib twice a day. So those of you who noticed that I haven't logged in at all for more than a week....THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONCERNED LETTERS AND PHONE CALLS.

Actually aside from being a bit tired of propping my eyelids open with matchsticks I am okay! So what have I been doing?

Well my friends...on Tuesday july 14th 2009 a starving, thirsty, tired, and sick whale arrived into my life. This 3 to 4 year old young wild animal had lost its pod and arrived all by itself into Jan Thiel Bay. My friends and collegues of Dolphin Academy, Dolphin Therapy Center, Curacao Sea Aquarium, Animal Encounters, Curacao Animal Shelter, C.A.R.F., Dierenhulp Venezuela and Curacao Wildlife who are all volunteers of the Southern Caribbean Cetacean Network (SCCN) rushed to its rescue to guard over the life and wellness of this teenage Pilot Whale. This means 24-hour per day we are feeding him....yes it is a boy by the way...treating his wounds, giving him antibiotics, pump water and a shake made up of herring and vitamins and medicine into his stomache via a special tube.....

Well it is an ongoing adventure because yesterday for the first time we know he has beaten the odds and he will survive!!!!

Yippie !!! Yeehaaaa!!!

So if you come to Jan Thiel Bay you can find me at sunrise (0609am) and at sunset (0602pm) at the beach in front of Zanzibar Beach Club from sunday till thursday every week, and on some days I will have a shift from around midnight until sunrise. Yes, you are allowed to bring coffee, croissants and donuts!!!

Allot of tourists and locals have passed by during the past week and a half and donated food, coffee, juice, water and other consumnables for the human volunteers. Others dropped coins in the donation box. You people are awesome!

I will upload pictures soon, but right now I am going to TRY to email pictures to a marine biologist in Curacao who needs to email them to a veterinarian in Florida. The pictures are overdue because my internet connection is extremely bad right now and goes on and off like the flickering light of the firefly that has landed on a lounge chair next to me.
And then go catch some zzzzz's so that I'll be ready for my next shift between 3am and 9am.

Soon I will post the pictures of the whale as attachments.

My request to all who read this is as follows: if you spot a pod of pilot whales, please send their coordinates, direction, and speed via SMS to +(599-9) 6683500, so that I can pass this info on to the marine biologist who is in charge of the SCCN and the welfare of this beautiful little whale so that we can reunite this animal with a new family of pilot whales.

All by himself he will be unable to forage enough food to survive and will he be unable to ward off predators.

ciao for now

- rather quiet in june and beginning of july
  • From: weather at dushicuracao.net
  • Date: 4 Jul 2009 16:47:01 -0000
We boffen !!

I agree with Dave and Gert that it's been rather quiet in june and beginning of july 2009 in our part of the Tropics: in the Caribbean of the American Continent.

In the other part of the Tropics....a long ways due West of the ACB islands and Due South of Mexico it is a whole different story. Three spinners are each trying to develop into an invest...all at the same time!! If any or all succeed there is 60% chance they'l head westwards into the Pacific Ocean, and hopefully don't cross over the Mexican territories into the Mexican Gulf.

None of them are being influenced by SAL (the Sahara Air Layer), and even though their potential to come our way is less than 5%, I'll keep monitoring them anyway to make sure we won't get surpised again by another Leftie such as Lenny and Omar. It is still fresh in our memories that Omar went in the ESE and E direction for 3 days before heading NE and away, whereas the official storm warning was never given that it would head SE... (ask me via email for the proof)

Current Weather data:
Temperature: 26.0 °C

Sea Level pressure: 1012.7 hPa
Wind direction/speed: 120° (ESE) 17 km/h

- next potential rainproducing wave from E and SE
  • From: weather at dushicuracao.net
  • Date: 4 Jul 2009 15:53:20 -0000

I checked the free NASA GOES Satellite images and below you can see the infrared and the water vapor images

Currently the sea swells are moderate 4 to 8 footers at the northern coast near Playa Canoa.
Towards the north, south east and east lightning and dark clouds can be observed over sea. The GOES images show a potential for lightning, but since this rather small wave of thunderstorms popped up unexpectedly east of the ABC islands in the wake of the bigger wave of thunderstorms that has already passed Curacao between 8am and 10 am this morning.

The front of this small wave can produce near gail force sudden wind increase, so all sailboats need to reduce their sails to prevent a repeat of a boat capsizing accident such as experienced by the Jolly Pirates in Aruba in recent history.

Current Weather data:
Temperature: 28.0 °C
Humidity: 70%
Sealevel pressure:1014 hPa
Wind direction/speed: 120° (ESE) 18 km/h
Sky: 50% blue skies

- finally rain
  • From: weather at dushicuracao.net
  • Date: 3 Jul 2009 21:19:05 -0000
After a 4 month drought we are experiencing heavy rainshowers so that you can barely see the car in front of you for 3 to 7 minutes in the pouring rain. If you can't park on the shoulder to wait for the rain to pass, then please drive slowly with your lights on so that the traffic in the opposite direction can see you.

The rain is coming in small waves which are produced by the outer bands of the thunderstorm system that is racing from east to west with a speed between 5 and 15 km/hr

In the northern part of the island a funnel nearly touched ther sea...too bad ...it fizzled up into this air because otherwise I'd be in the right place the right time to photograph the waterspout.

Even with this bad weather we still have 50 percent blue skies. IF you gaze up at the sky you can see a strange phenomenom: the thunderclouds racing from east to west and in the upper level you can see clouds move from west to east. These latter clouds are the outer bands of the weather system in the Gulf of Colombia...

more later after I changed the batteries of my windgenerator...

- two spinners...
  • From: weather at dushicuracao.net
  • Date: 1 Jul 2009 04:49:04 -0000
Yes folks we got a possible invest in one and a half days developing at 33N 48W
in the northern Atlantic. I am not really sure if it will get a name though
since it is quite high and away from us folks in the Caribbean. All the way
west of us at 12N 96W we will see another spinner developing in the Pacific and
since that is also way out of our league it won't get to be named Ana.

Currently strong winds prevail in Curacao at the northern and southern
coastline and in open sea. The wind strength can only be felt in open areas
inland.

Most likely the wind strength will peak on this coming saturday with 51 to 53
km/h winds and within 2 days thereafter the wind will die down supposedly....I
really hope not because usually this time of the year the weather is
characterized by a downpour of Sahara dust that was swepped up into the
atmosphere by sandstorms on the African continent. The dust is usually also
accompanied by hot, sticky, throat/eye -irritating humid weather. The strong
wind literally blew away the dust today, and is blowing a contineous stream of
cool ocean air over the entire island...

Tomorrow for the forecast calls for partially blue sky, no rain, and again
strong winds.

- heh echoooo
  • From: weather at dushicuracao.net
  • Date: 29 Jun 2009 17:47:52 -0000
On June 25th, google news, twitter, facebook, hyves, and other social and news
media websites crashed and were inaccessible for hours when the news got out
that the LEGEND OF POP passed away...

After what happened last night you can see that my servers have also peaked a
near overload and started echoing and ghosting all data in two and threefold.
Things should be normal now that I have doubled my allotted bandwidth...

Now back to the weather in Curacao. Right now the temperature is a cool 29
Celsius, and strong winds can be experienced near the coastline and in open
areas inland. This is great for kitesurfing but not so great for small
watercraft powered by the wind in their sails.

After last nights' rainless thunder, we now have a fully overcast sky and no
rain.

The forecast calls for the blue sky to return tomorrow but the strong wind will
continue till Wednesday which means that the cruise ships will need extra
tugboats to assist during the mooring maneuvers.

- distant thunder...
  • From: weather at dushicuracao.net
  • Date: 29 Jun 2009 04:38:28 -0000
Sunday's weather was predominately characterized by gail force winds and rough seas. Right now it is earie quiet and yet I woke up to the distant noise of thunder. So I opened my laptop and checked out the GOES and lo and behold a rather small wave is rolling over the Venezuelan landscape and is heading straight for teh ABC islands. However as this wave rolls over the Andean Mountains of Venezuela it appears that the wave is falling apart. Even though Curacao is in eager need of a good shower, we really do not need any lightning right now to potentially ignite the dry grassfields...

- rough seas
  • From: info at kunuku.net
  • Date: 28 Jun 2009 20:17:32 -0000
Currently the wind at the southern/Northern shores of Curacao has near gail force strength and the sea swells are risky for small watercraft ...even the sailboat the Insulinde had some problem with this weather and opted to sail upwind with motorpower rather than windpower.

Gert, please allow me to climb on my soapbox and voice my opinion about the
following.

We are accustomed to seeing the early storms develop near the Western Caribbean
slash Gulf of Mexico and then drift over to the Gulf of Mexico or the straight
of Florida. But this year is not a usual storm season since we have a new
threat in Mexico that is characterized by airborne transmission of a viral
agent. We really do not want a hurricane hitting Mexico this season with over 1
million people over there infected by the virus that the media calls the A-H1N1
influenza virus (I'll come back to this later). To prevent this rather mild
disease from mutating into a new threat, every attempt is made to contain it as
best as possible. Even though it is a rather mild disease, the problem is that
the human race does not contain antibodies in our immune system to fight off
this new disease.

Allow me to explain why antibodies are important...in humans AND other living
organisms.

Just like having been exposed to any of the 4 types of the yellow aka dengue
fever...after each recovery you can't catch it again since your immune system
has created a defense mechanism to prevent repeat infection. Although once you
have had 1 of the 4 types of dengue, you can still catch the other 3, and once
you've had all 4..chances are very slim that you will develop symptoms of
dengue again until a 5th type pops up. (Don't worry the 5th type does not
exist..yet). But each time you catch a new type of influenza, your body creates
antibodies to defend you against future infections. If everybody in the world
exercised daily, ate their greens, and reduced intake of fatty foods and
maintained a healthy lifestyle, resulting in a strong immune system in all
humans, then and only then is there a chance to get rid of all the influenza
amongst humans.

But since humans are not the only living organisms of flesh, the diseases can
manifest themselves in the other living organisms. In order to get rid of this
vector of disease transmission we need to look after the wellbeing of these
living organisms. This means we need to stop polluting their habitats, and we
need to stop destroying their habitats. Pollution weakens their immune system,
and destruction of habitat leads to the silent killer aka stress.

It is very well possible that allot of people in 2009 carry antibodies with
them to ward off H5N1 and H1N1, because even though the Spanish Flu fizzled out
around 1918, it was not cured, so it could have very have jumped species and
have been kept alive by other organisms other than human beings during the past
90 years. This would have been a very credible hypothesis to reason why this
influenza popped back up again if science had not discovered the following.

I wish that people will stop calling it a swine or pig flu since the make up of
this virus did not originate from pigs. (read about it in the scientific
journal at http://tinyurl.com/h1n1DNA) Furthermore there have been no confirmed
cases of alleged infections in pigs. Also it is NOT a food-borne illness
meaning that you do not get infected by touching raw pork meat and eating
cooked pork. So all those 300.000 pigs they eviscerated in Egypt was just a
plain stupid act of panic. As a matter of fact this new never before seen virus
looks more like a subversion of bird flu. As a matter of fact allot of
scientists who have looked a bit more closely on a molecular level all agree
that this new virus resembles a "forced mutation" of H5N1 than H1N1 since its
molecular structure incorporates DNA sequences of 3 types of influenza: H5N1,
and two subtypes of H1N1. Furthermore the virus that is called the swine flu
aka A-H1N1 incorporates only less than approx 30% DNA of the two H1N1 sub
types and approx 65% percent of H5N1. The remaining approx 5% of the DNA
structures never existed outside a lab.

But since there have been over a million worldwide human infections of
H5N1...to this date there are less than 500 human fatalities. Similarly with
over a million infections in Mexico alone, less than 200 people met their maker
too early. Yes the numbers indicate a very very very low mortality rate. Whew!
Isn't that a sign of relief! So we are lucky that the forced mutation resulted
in a rather mild virus. But if scientists backed by defense funds keep playing
God by forcing mutations of new viruses that no human and no other living
organism of flesh has ever been exposed to...we may not be so lucky next time
it "escapes" its lab isolation.

By the way...why is every country stocking up on Tamiflu and is totally
ignoring Relenza. Both were lab tested as being effective antiviral meds, and
Relenza is cheaper...!! Does anyone know the answer to this?

If you have any questions about the aforementioned please go read the reputable
medical/science journals and news sites below first...the sci-jargon may be a
tad technical so launch your fav wikipedia in a separate window to assist with
the sci- jargon :-P

At 2pm the NHC wrote that nothing is expected to form in the next 48 hours. But
still we are keeping an eye on that system in the "gulf of Colombia" that's
been sitting there for 3 days...and it is just about the same location where
Omar and Lenny were born.

This year we want to anticipate, instead of lean back and experience unpleasant
surprises.

- bad weather 170 km SW of Curacao heading ENE
  • From: weather at dushicuracao.net
  • Date: 10 Jun 2009 14:01:24 -0000
Since this morning the wind has been turning in response to the bad weather
that is located 170 km due south west of Curacao and which is heading ENE at an
undetermined speed. Whereas the normal direction where wind comes from is NE,
the wind is now coming from SE, or ESE. On the radar and the sattelite images
we can see the bad weather system moving in a NE direction twards the ABC
islands. The front part of the bad weather is breaking up as it affected by the
updraft of the mountains of Venezuela. This means that we will just get some
more clouds to ad to our partially overcast skies, but most likely no
well-needed moisture from the skies.

The temp is 29 degrees celsius and wind form SE is 27.8 km/h.

Nothing special to report in Curacao: all clear skies, low winds, and low
waves. We are keeping a vigilant eye on the big blob due west of us over
Central America near Honduras. ps: if anyone in Central America or Colombia n
Venezuela has seen a lionfish...please email me.
