- the wet stuff

After a few thousand people purchased water from the truckers over the past few weeks up until monday morning, we had about 5 inches of rain yesterday and all the cisterns were overflowing. I think i could actually hear the grass and trees cheering too.
Today looking very dark. We had to cancel two boat trips yesterday. its looking like the same again for today but very likely less. I can't complain though as this winter has had some of the calmest and nicest weather that i can remember.
I don't like the crownweather.com forecast for the summer though. scary! It's like this is the summer weather letting us know right now that it's gonna be hard to forecast.
Anyway, if i am gonna cancell boat trips it better rain hard again. So BRING IT ON!

The link below explains much about what many of us have known since late January. The ocean has been unbelievably warm for winter. What the blog doesn’t comment on is the fact that for nearly 2 months we have had an amazingly strong and relentless south to north oceanic current (2 to 4 knots) passing the islands which has turned the pelagic dolphin (mahi mahi) fishery on its head. The usual arrival of sargassum and the flotsam, which the dolphin follw, that comes from the north between December and May, hasn’t occurred. This current has undoubtedly added to the warm local sea temperatures. Maybe all of it has also resulted in the awful drought we are presently going through.

- RAIN!!!!

We had solid rain for 3 hours last night!! What a welcome sound. I was getting ready to order a water truck tomorrow, reprieve!!! Still cloudy this morning but no sign of rain yet. English Harbour has had virtually no government water for weeks so lets hope they get more and more rain. Our garden has been full of cracks its been so dry. Our little terrier Max has almost recovered from being run over so he'll be tracking mud everywhere again. Our road goes only to one more house and they managed to hit him and crack his pelvis 6 weeks ago, go figure.   He'll be his normal happy muddy self soon. Getting very bothered about the upcoming hurricane season with such weird weather all around the world...snow in Provence in March!! Jan

hope you can get the image of the erruption via sat maps. Today the winds were coming from the west and south-west at about 1-5 knots. I told my wife that we didn't want an erruption today and I "goat mouthed" myself. Less than thirty minutes later the sky turned dark as the ash cloud came close. Luckily most of it passed between GP and ANU.
In other news....: SURF IS COMING tomorrow night and saturday!!!!

This holiday season hasn't been as windy as it usually is but the surf has been excellent (if you are a surfer) and terrible (if you just want to anchor up in a nice bay for the night). Anyway, after having a few days fairly swell free, we can expect another dose of big wave action this evening which will be around for the week with a little drop on Thursday in the forecast. I have way too much work this week, but i hope to hit some of that surfing action. Wish me luck. Be careful anchoring close to the shore!

The christmas winds have finally arrived along with last nights heavy rain. I manged to get my christmas party on Wednesday in under the wire. The weather was great and a good time was had by all. New years Eve was not the best weather and the wind is more northerly at the moment so that the rain blows onto our veranda, and Im looking for a sweater!!!!  The last few weeks made me wonder if global warming was here already as it was very hot and muggy for December. Our power has been off and on for the last 2 days and I phoned to find out why. The lady told me it was "swishing" and be on soon. She lied!!!  This is the third time Ive tried to send this email hope I manage this time. Happy new year to everyone in the Caribbean and everyone gets their share of rain for 2010, but not the big H. Jan

This afternoon we had very heavy rainfall. St. Johns had several inches and I observed lightning earlier in the day. A friend is stranded at the airport as a flight went back to it's origin as it was unable to land.

I don't remember the island ever being so green and lush. It rains every day at least once and every night..usualy short heavy showers . Heavy enough that the wipers cant cope when Im driving. The only downside is the speed that the weeds grow and the reluctance of my stepson to strim!!!!  And the potholes in our roads impossible to avoid as the traffic is so heavy. Oh! and the usual muddy dog prints everywhere. Not really into christmas this year as I've been a bit too busy, though christmas carols at the museum last night performed by the 'Expressions ' put everyone in the mood, and luckily the rain held off as it was outside. St Johns was noisy, crowded and a bit frantic with venders and shops open until late, everyone trying to earn some christmas money.  Very happy to get home to our rural Buckleys but happy to see the season kicking in and I hope that everyone can make a decent living this year in these difficult economic times. I hope the hurricane forecast is as accurate as usual[ not] and that the next season will be hurricane free. Well off to work again, hope the rain is not too bad as Im working sort of outside. Happy christmas to all the hurricane bloggers have a good one and a great new year. Jan

Dear friends,

Last week, officers of the Aruba Coast Guard recorded and photographed a pod of killer whales near Aruba, just in front of the Venezuelan mainland. Coast Guard officers provided the photograph to colleague Ms. Angiolina Henriquez, of the Aruba Marine Mammal Foundation (AMMF), whom I am copying this message. Notice has been sent to our lists of contacts just in case somebody else can get some more pictures. Ms. Henríquez has requested of us to send this message to colleagues in the area, for comparing purposes with other databases. We have attached a set of pictures and a press article that a Venezuelan newspaper published yesterday. Please feel free to disseminate.

Thanks a lot for your help,

Jaime

Am in Tobago for a few days for my son Eli's wedding! He is marrying a
beautiful Tobagonian lady. He is very lucky. Tobago is an incredible island, a
mixture of both the Windward and Leeward islands. The island hosts a most
remarkable number of exotic birdlife, they seem to be more at home in Jurassic
Park. The vegetation is Amazonian- huge tropical trees in thousands of acres of
rainforests, protected since 1780! The oldest forest preserve in the western
hemisphere. Rivers and streams wind everywhere and beautiful beaches line the
coast. It truly is a little exciting gem.

The cistern is overflowing and we are frantically washing any laundry we can find not to waste the water. The TV has been on and off for the last couple of days and Im now waiting for the power to off as well. The thunder is banging overhead and shaking the house but its usually the lightning strikes that cause the trouble .Im trying to paint but as I don't live in England or north America I haven't enough lights rigged up to work with. Our river is now running alongside the house in a concrete ditch instead of through the front yard and under the house ,thanks to our new next door neighbour who built concrete retaining walls . Dominica has nothing on us! eat your heart out jacolass. If this keeps up I'll be able to wash our cloths in the run off. Only problem; I can't find where the river is going, I hope not under the foundations of the poor beleaguered neighbour below us. Dont know what this weather is but its very WET!

While leaving this morning for work, I noticed a distinct change in the wind direction. It was steady out of the West North West. There was a scent as the McKinnons swamp familiar smell blew into McKinnons/Paradise View area.

A few hours later, I thought a war broke out. The thunder was quite heavy and even though I am in a bunker of a building, I could feel my desk shake ever so slightly with every crack of the thunder. It has calmed down a bit but it is overcast with shower activity.

We here in Antigua are watching this blob of weather inching closer to us, already bringing loud peals of thunder and fascinating flashes of lightning. Weathermen have announced flash flood warnings for Antigua today. So far the rain has not been heavy, but steady. We are happy for the showers, which has been scarce this year, but I wish I could send the thunder and lightning far far away. (laugh).

Be safe.

Around this time of year, I usually walk with my sweater around St.John's. Lately, we have had quite a few hot and humid days with some rains right after. The rain feels great and cools down the place.
So far, we really have been very lucky with the hurricane season this year and hope that can remain that way for next year.

- The drought
  • By jan farara <janfarara at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Wed, 21 Oct 2009 15:42:31 +0000
The worst drought for 20 years!!!! I remember it..A fair came up from Dominica on top of some water barges, this was before desalinization and some of our hotels were rationed to a trickle twice a day and cattle were dying everywhere. The only way tourists were able to shower was by putting a plastic cup under the trickle and then tipping the little drop of water on to their heads. Our island is in a better position now as most of the hotels make their own water. Agriculture and livestock take the brunt of any drought as irrigation is limited to a few ponds quickly emptied.  Some of the villages including our 's have an iffy water situation at best with a lot of homes still collecting their water from the main standpipe.  In the middle of the island at Buckleys we have had rain yesterday and today and are pretty green. As we rely on cistern water entirely..good news as Im trying to grow my own herbs.  jacolass came for a quick visit on her way back to Dominica a sort of mental midwaypoint between the crowds of U.K. and the peace of Dominica, only to loose her parrot and luckily find him again. Hope the hurricane season is finished  but we have rain anyway and everyone stays safe, Jan

I told a bunch of people that we'd get rain today and although i can hear thunder and see big clouds we are dry as a bone in jolly harbour (aka jollywood).
Last year this time i was bringing our boat up from the nevis fishing tournament in horrible weather. We missed it this year but it looks like the rest of the gang coming back from there today could be in for a rough ride. Radar and sat maps show plenty of nasty stuff out there. Mostly to the north so lets hope they have a safe trip!

- STORMS
  • By fullerj at candw.ag
  • Date: Thu, 1 Oct 2009 14:43:25 +0000
It's all well and good to declare that it's so wonderful that we have had no
storms, how lucky we've been, etc..., but the reality is that the rain brought
by the hurricane season is vital, indeed essential, to the survival of flora
and fauna (including man) here in the Eastern Caribbean. For example, the great
annual migration bird migration south fro as far north as the Arctic circle
takes place over the next 10 days. Many waterfowl arrive in the Eastern
Caribbean needing freshwater flashes to survive the winter. No storms, no rain,
no habitat for the fowl. The farmers need the rain, we need the rain for our
homes. With an avg annual rainfall of 42 inches we need every drop we can get.
So, with a September like this last one, we are quickly heading for a drought.
And trouble.

.The air seems cooler and crisper and the visibility from our hillside home has improved twofold. Cloudy today and we've had a couple of short light showers this morning  .It was wonderful to watch the rain come towards us across the island from the comfort of our bed and know that we were safe and dry. A little red chested bird came into our bedroom through the open doors and preened himself in the mirror, then proceeded to hop downstairs stair by stair!!  Luckily we don't have a cat and Max doesn't seem to be interested in birds.  There's nothing happening weather-wise at the moment or any other-wise in Antigua, apart from a whirlwind visit by Lizzette [Jacolass .Dominica] last week. Its been a hot slow time with whole areas closed up tight, English Harbour, Redcliffe Quay ( apart from horrible imported .so called art for the cruise ships] Mind you; hot and slow beats dark and stormy as in HURRICANES!!!! Lets just hope it stays this way for everyone for the rest of the summer . Oh well back to work though Im lucky to be still busy, most starving artists aren't!!!! Jan

Am surprised that not much is being said about that blob of rain and thunderstorms just SW of the islands. Seems to be sending some showers over the Windwards, from what I've been hearing... And it doesn't seem to be going very "westerly" at this moment, and although we need the rain, am very watchful of storms that start from that angle...

looks like Barbados has had a wet summer so far. They must be very green. we haven't been having the rains recently and it's been super hot. Atlantic is quiet and there has been no surf!! Kinda boooring, but the boating has been good. Had a lovely trip to Barbuda on Sunday. So calm!
This Saturday is International Coastal Cleanup day and if you are on island, then you should visit your fave beach and do a little cleanup. It all helps and millions of people around the world will be doing a little extra beach cleaning this weekend. If you want to come out to one of the islands and help us do some beach cleaning there call Nell in our office on 726 6355. If we have space we will take you for free, but bring garbage bags!
