I really didn't notice it was like this. Luckily no one was hurt.
It has cooled down somewhat in the evenings. A trough is currently affecting the region, therefore we are and will be receiving overcast skies at times with showers. There's also the possibility of thunderstorms (we received a very brief one late this afternoon). A Flash Flood Watch is in effect until 6am tomorrow morning.

Have a blessed evening!

- I sure didn't see this one coming...
  • From: Sherilyn Vaughan <kahrahmel at gmail.com>
  • Date: Thu, 6 Nov 2008 23:28:47 -0400
Yesterday:
I was picking my daughter up from school when a friend asked me why I didn't tell him we were under flashflood advisory. I was like... What???
Apparently we were being affected by a trough of low pressure, resulting in showers most of the day, but in the evening showers increased to heavy downpours, firey lightning and ground shaking thunder. It was an experience I wouldn't like to go through again, as I left my house that evening not knowing what was going on, relying solely on public transportation... Boy what an experience!

Today:
We did experience flash flood last night. The bus terminal in Basseterre as well as the bayroad infront of it was impassable today, making it a nightmare to come home this evening, as the buses travelling to and from the west had to change their route. It was obvious that hard work was being done to clean it up all day. Hopefully the road will be free tomorrow.
It was warmer today with a few light sprinkles. We received a few showers tonight but nothing close to last night.

Let's still keep an eye out on what's going on around us. Paloma looks fiesty and determined.

Goodnight.

It's closing off for 2008 Hurricane Season, or is it?

The islands are being threatened by a very determined system, which is being sheared suppressing it's efforts. I know we are not looking forward to any late bloomers as we are just starting to enjoy the busyness of Tourism Season, so let's pray nothing happens.

Today skies were mostly clear with a few passing showers. I did not enjoy the heat, but the tourists had no complaints as most of them had chilly weather back home. Here is an interesting photo taken this afternoon. Note the rainbow. Nature is surely beautiful.

- Tourism Season has officially started and the weather is fine...
  • From: Sherilyn Vaughan <kahrahmel at gmail.com>
  • Date: Sat, 25 Oct 2008 21:17:23 -0400
We are still cleaning up some of the badly hit areas around St. Kitts. A few of the Sea Lions and Fur Seals from our Marine World have escaped, some have even been spotted in St. Maarten's waters. (I really hope they are found...)

Most of the beach bars are back up and running and everyone has been preparing for the official start of our Tourism Season.

Marco Polo was scheduled for the 17th October, but cancelled. Carnival Miracle gave us a start today though, and the weather was almost perfect for it.

Skies were clear to partially cloudy with only a few occasional sprinkles during the afternoon. Just about perfect for shopping, tours, and beach...

It is very quiet around the islands right now. Let's hope it stays that way.

Just a quick update. There's no school today. The roads are being
cleaned up and residents are asked to stay home. Some businesses
including a pharmacy and insurance company are opened today.
Oldroad bay is said to be impassable. Some houses on the coast of
Oldroad as well as Sprat Net, (a local business popular for it's local
cuisine eg. Fish, lobster etc) are reported to be badly damaged and
have boulders deposited inside them. In my area looks fine but we
have no electricity or water.
More later on.

So far the general damage seem to be coastal. A few power lines are
reported down throughout the island. Parts of the island's main road
are said to be blocked with debris and water. The bayroad in
Basseterre is said to be impassable as the sea has deposited a lot of
debris. A few trees in the Independence Square are reported down and
banners in the main town area have been torn down. So far no deaths or
major damage have been reported.

  • From: "Sherilyn Vaughan" <kahrahmel at gmail.com>

I live within the Trinity area of St.Kitts which is approx. 3 miles
west of Basseterre. Tropical storm conditions started affecting us
roughly after 10 pm lastnight, increasing incredibly sometime after 1
am this morning. We have no electricity and I hate not being able to
see what's going on around me. The roaring of the sea is not
comforting and the smell of it is very strong, I can only imagine the
waves. I took a peek outside and there's quite a lightning display and
the tree branches seem to be going around in circles. I am kind of
anxious to see what our island looks like, esp around the Dieppe Bay
area.
I pray everyone is safe.

We've just experienced one of the spiral bangs. We received quite a
downpour along with thunder and lightning. The drains are rushing with
water. Some places already have no electricity probably still as a
result of continued load shedding.

Most of the businesses including banks, have already closed at 12pm.
The government buildings should close by 2pm. Everyone is rushing home
now or shopping for groceries.

Will update more later on. Be safe.

It has been very calm here this morning. It's currently grey with just sprinkles here in the Basseterre area. Everyone seem to be going about their business here regularly, except for a few places. Most schools will be closing as at 12pm.

We have been under Hurricane Warning from the 11pm advisory last night, so I pray everyone is taken necessary precautions. The ZIZ radio station, 96.7FM  (www.zizonline.com) has been giving local weather updates, along with the closing of schools etc. Omar is expected to pass us later tonight or early tomorrow morning.

Take care and be safe.

  • From: "Sherilyn Vaughan" <kahrahmel at gmail.com>
  • Date: Tue, 14 Oct 2008 22:16:31 -0400

Wow! This storm is bringing back memories of good ole "Lefty Lenny" or "Wrong way Lenny" back in 1999. Did I say good? Sorry, from what I remembered of Lenny, our coastal areas towards the Caribbean Sea were no good after he left.

The weather hasn't changed much since I last blogged. Rain, rain and more rain, and a little thunder and lightning here and there.  From the 5pm advisory, we were and still are under Tropical Storm Warning, and Hurricane watch, so conditions should worsen within the next 24hours. My concern though is rainfall.  The soil is already soggy and there's still more to come as Omar approach.  My lemon grass is already uprooting. L

If my electricity holds up (we are still load shedding), I will keep you updated as Omar comes closer to our island.

- Update from Sugar City, St.Kitts
  • From: "Sherilyn Vaughan" <kahrahmel at gmail.com>
  • Date: Sat, 11 Oct 2008 21:53:15 -0400

Goodnight All!

At about 3:45am on Thursday, 2nd October 2008, our power station was ablaze, destroying its 2 largest engines, resulting in an island wide black out.  For the past week and few days, we had to endure load shedding resulting in some uncomfortable nights, loss of frozen/refrigerated goods, and loss of electrical appliances and so on. This is the first day I've had electricity all day, so I am taking this opportunity to let you be aware of what's going on here in Sugar City.

Weather related. During the past week, we received mostly scattered showers.  For the past couple of days a tropical wave exhibited it's presence throughout the Eastern Caribbean with intense downpours accompanied by gusting wind and loud rumbling thunderstorms. According to forecast, showers may last until Tuesday. Let's hope not. Like a good friend of mine always says, it doesn't have to be a Hurricane to hurt you. So be careful out there.

Cheers

Last night was a wow! There was wind, rain, lightning, and thunder. I didn't see that coming, but now looking at the satellite imagery I realize that last night's events were that of a tropical wave. Quite large, looks like the Windward Islands are really getting some rain...

Today has been mostly cloudy with just a few sprinkles here and there. At least the rain held up so that everyone can do their last bit of errands and grocery shopping as tomorrow is a public holiday.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all Kittitians and Nevisians a Happy 25th Independence. Whatever you do, be safe out there!

WOW! What a squall last night.  It begun about 11pm with light gusts and insistent drizzle with occasional lightning and peaked about 3am with driving, pounding rain, lightening to read by and enough wind to make me worry and my windows shake …and I’m a veteran of Gilbert in 1988.

Very spotty electrical service from about 4am.  Things quieted down by 9am this morning and it remains overcast today.   Last night’s thing was a tropical wave which is huge to see the satellite imagery and apparently there’s more in store for all of us up and down the eastern Caribbean.

At least I don’t have to water my lawn for a few days.

The island is expected to have a wet day or two as a tropical wave is expected to move in on Sunday.

My prayers go out to all those in Ike's path.

The past few days have been showery with a few thunderstorms, as there was a low level circulation within the area. Apparently this has diminished so we should expect sunshine for the next few days. However, on Saturday, Tropical Storm Ike should pass north of the islands and we may receive some moisture from him.

I suggest we keep an eye out though and prepare, as these storms are leaving us a bit baffled.

Wow, it’s been powerful hot over the last 3 days.  The usual trade winds that keep our temperatures and humidity down have all but disappeared like someone turned off the fan.  The common cause people around here think is Gustav.

This afternoon we got a good torrent accompanied by lightening that seemed to mean it, and so far the aftermath is cooler.  Winds are only up to a steady 3kph and temperature down to a more comfortable 27oC.

Hopefully it’ll last at least until nightfall and give us a more pleasant summer night.

I know I am sweating a lot more than usual, and just a short walk make you feel so dehydrated.  What is the weather like here?  It is still hot, but we've had a few showers and thunderstorms for the past few days.  The rain seems to briefly cool the heat down, and then it arose yet again.

Late this afternoon, it got misty and smelt a little funky. I am guessing it was the presence of ash, but I am not too certain.

Have a great night.

At just around 6:30pm we were enlightened by thunder and lightning display as a grand cumulonimbus cloud sluggishly moved over the island. It was accompanied by a little wind and shower activity.

Experts say that our "good weather conditions" may be interrupted by tropical waves this weekend. Let's see if they are right.

  • From: "Sherilyn Vaughan" <kahrahmel at gmail.com>
  • Date: Wed, 20 Aug 2008 21:24:22 -0400

If anyone exclaims that it has been murderously hot, I wouldn't say that they are exaggerating.  It's courtesy of heat and humidity walking hand in hand. Temperatures are generally in the mid to upper 80s with humidity exceeding 80%.

We've been getting quite a few showers during the nights and early in the mornings.  Does it make the temperature cooler? Perhaps temporarily, but for the most parts it feels stickier thereafter.

All eyes should focus east as a low pressure system and tropical wave heads west.

Cheers.

I've been keeping a steady eye on this one during the last week of my two weeks vacation in the beautiful islands of the Bahamas.

Approximately 1:10pm yesterday, as the aircraft got about 25 mins from St.Kitts, I saw towering clouds surrounding the islands. The landing was somewhat bumpy. That afternoon through evening was mostly cloudy, very still and sticky. Not even a drizzle of rain.

We experienced some good a.m showers. So far skies are still cloudy. Let's see how the rest of the day go.

The atlantic has been pretty busy these days, but so far we've been spared. For those of you keeping abreast with the weather, this is something you should keep your eyes on. It hasn't quite left the coast as yet, but if experts are talking about it, I suggest it's something worth monitoring.

I quote:

A VIGOROUS AND WELL-DEFINED TROPICAL WAVE IS LOCATED OVER WESTERN
AFRICA A COUPLE HUNDRED MILES EAST OF DAKAR SENEGAL.  THIS SYSTEM
HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BECOME A TROPICAL CYCLONE VERY QUICKLY AFTER
IT EMERGES INTO THE EASTERN ATLANTIC WITHIN THE NEXT DAY OR TWO.

  • From: "Sherilyn Vaughan" <kahrahmel at gmail.com>
  • Date: Thu, 17 Jul 2008 21:34:08 -0300
There's so much going on right now.

Bertha. This system just loves our attention. That "lady" keeps giving us something to talk about. Elsewhere, portions of Honduras and Nicaragua should be receiving not so good weather with potential mudslides and flashfloods, as Invest 95 makes its way inland. Invest 96 located just a few miles off of Jacksonville, FL, is looking favourable for tropical development.

Closer home, Invest 94. This strong tropical system, now west of the Windward islands, still have the potential to become a tropical depression in the next day or so. We are receiving cloudiness and a few showers associated with this system. Lightning can also be seen over the Caribbean Sea.

While all this is happening, let's not forget that there're other waves making their way off the coast of Africa.

  • From: "Sherilyn Vaughan" <kahrahmel at gmail.com>

This Hurricane Season has set new records, with Bertha being the first tropical storm to form that far east (at 25° West Longitude), this early in the Atlantic. She went from being a tropical storm, to a Cat 1 Hurricane, and surprised everyone by becoming a monster Cat 3 Hurricane, in less than a day.

Today, a westward moving surface to upper level trough induced by Bertha, created much needed moisture. Rain fell from approx. 7:30-9:10am intermittently, mostly light in intensity, but there were numerous times when it increased to a moderate intensity. Lightning and thunder were apparent from around 7:30-9:45am. Lightning strikes mostly over sea, both Atlantic and Caribbean. Skies improved briefly thereafter, then became somewhat cloudy with scattered showers and occasional thunder in the afternoon.

Bertha has now downgraded to a Cat1 and is headed north in open water.

Tonight is forecasted to be partly cloudy and slightly hazy, with the possibility of a few more shattered showers. Tomorrow should be sunny to partly cloudy, but mostly dry, as the trough should've shifted north away from the islands, and high pressure once again becomes the imposing feature.

Bertha has given us a heads up, so take warning and be prepared.

Cheers.

There was a break in the dry spell yesterday. St. Kitts and Nevis were blessed with some mid-morning, moderate to heavy showers along with a few distant cracks of thunder heard along the island's east coast. Showers on a whole concluded just before midday, 24hr total precipitation of 9.7mm/0.38" was recorded at the airport with higher amounts falling in mountainous areas. The mid morning showers were courtesy of a tropical wave now west of the island chain moving westwards at 15-20kt. Most of the heavy rainfall remained south of St. Kitts and the island of Guadeloupe recorded 24hr total precipitation of 1.65''. Today we should see a return to more sunny to partly cloudy conditions outside a chance of lingering moisture producing the possibility of a few morning sprinkles.

  • From: "Sherilyn Vaughan" <kahrahmel at gmail.com>
  • Date: Mon, 16 Jun 2008 20:16:18 -0300
Weather conditions over St. Kitts for the last few days have been hot and dry with exception of some showers occurring overnight on Thursday. These conditions have been present due to stability in the upper levels of the atmosphere, due to the presence of a strong high pressure system, and a lack of moisture. Also, as is typical for this time of year wind flow across the islands have decreased somewhat down to a daily average of 9kts as compared to a 11-14kt average that occurs during cooler seasons of the year. The resulting wind flow is warmer than usual and not as comforting.

Over the next few days these conditions are expected to remain in place resulting in mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies. A quick look at some visible satellite imagery shows little low level cloudy presence thus there is little chance for showers tomorrow going into Wednesday.

There is a tropical wave approaching from the east with its axis along 46W/47W but no deep convection is observed at this time.

Hey all,

Yesterday
If anyone wondered why your eyes felt grainy, the air looked misty and there was a little bit of funk in the air, it was the compliments of Soufriere Hills, Montserrat. Apparently there was a small eruption on Tuesday, 13th May 2008, where ash rose to about 10,000 feet above sea level. The ash was accompanied by blue sulphur-dioxide gas. So yes, Soufriere Hills is alive and kicking, still.

For more updates you can go to http://www.mvo.ms/

Today
The heat is on! We have somewhat cloudless skies and very little breeze. I basically stayed indoors enjoying the AC, minimizing the need to go outside as much as possible.
Drink lots of water to stay hydrated.

Good day all. An above average season is expected. I hope we are all taking note and are making the necessary preparation. You can never be too ready in the Caribbean.

The week here was extremely hot, and sunny. Today however is rather cloudy. On my way to work this morning I couldn't help noticing how grey everything looked. It's still quite warm though, and the lack of wind isn't helping.

Have a blessed day!
