- RAIN ..... YIPPPEEEEEE!!!!
  • From: Heygirllll at aol.com
  • Date: Tue, 17 Apr 2007 07:47:04 EDT
It rained last night and early this morning, and was actually more than a little sprinkle. Hallelujah! The sound on the tin roof actually kept me awake, I usually  sleep right through it. I noticed this morning the pool has about an inch of water added overnight ... I won't have to add more and I won't need to water the plants this morning ... yaaaay!

It's been very, very dry here on St. Croix lately, as seems to be the case on many of the other islands. I hope the rain traveled to others that needed it, too.

- It was a dark and stormy night ...
  • From: Heygirllll at aol.com
  • Date: Tue, 14 Nov 2006 07:12:12 EST
And it was also a dark and stormy morning! Lots of rain during the early morning hours, and chilly! I checked the thermometer on my alarm clock at around 5 a.m. and it read 78 .... brrrrrrrr! Good sleepin' weather. It's still cloudy and sprinkling, the radar shows a blob on top of STX, I'm not sure if it's coming or going. I have no doubt there's some sunshine right around the corner!

- Trick or Treat Weather?
  • From: "H & I Cerni" <hicerni at attglobal.net>
  • Date: Fri, 27 Oct 2006 22:57:18 -0300

I missed Dave's report today concerning that wave. I have had three totally contradictory reports to go with thus far. Our TV 2 said we should getting lots of rain tomorrow, Channel 8 said it should not affect us too much as it is too far south, and from the Weather Radio I understand that  the wave is very strong, it should affect the region, our region, and has potential to increase in intensity in the next day or so. It would have been interesting to know what Dave makes out of all this. It does not look too bad in the Satellite Imagery, but then it can also be deceiving. From Barbados we read that it was raining tonight and expected to rain all night. I hope the weather will be a real treat for us as the Boy Scouts from the territory are having a big event at Howard Wall Camp in St. Croix, and tomorrow night HOVENSA (Oil Refinery) is having its 40th anniversary and is planning a big bash complete with a sunset Jazz concert, lots of music, food, and activities, ending with fireworks. If it is postponed for the following Saturday Nov. 4th, there will be competition with TEMPO's first anniversary to be celebrated in St. Croix at Cramer Park; some 10,000 people are expected for that event according to the organizers.

Thank God for small worries. Have a safe All Hallows(Saints) Eve !!

- Oh No! Not Again!
  • From: "H & I Cerni" <hicerni at attglobal.net>
  • Date: Wed, 25 Oct 2006 00:02:53 -0300
I hope Dave's forecast is wrong this time. We still have puddles of water, big and small ones, since that huge rainfall that broke all records, certainly for the month of October. Some people said it broke the record of rainfall for the year! We still don't know exactly how much we received, but we heard that Puerto Rico received  nine and a half inches and it seems we always got the brunt of it. This is a cause for worry, if rain does come so soon. We had a landslide behind our house and lots more is threatening to come down. I'm concerned about the road above us. It can cave in. We had quite a bit of damage on the roads and many homes got flooded. Some homes were like houseboats. The bad road to our house is now perhaps the worse road on the island, although I think we have a lot of competition now. Well, I guess we cannot fight Mother Nature. We won't win anyway, so we must make the best of it. I suggested to the grandchildren that we could put on the fireplace and roast marshmellows. Fireplace? Well, a video fireplace with a real crackling, roaring fire. I could not convince them. We put on the fireplace and I felt warm. My five-year-old looked up at the ceiling and said, "The fan is not on." She was disppointed. She thought I meant a real fireplace and started to cry. Well, we can't win all the time. Anyway, all the best to everyone out there if this new system comes by and does a similar stunt. Hasta luego!

Isabel

P.S. If you don't have a real fireplace (who needs that in the tropics anyway!) get a video Fireplace for the effect. It's cozy!

- Torrential Rain all day!
  • From: "H & I Cerni" <hicerni at attglobal.net>
  • Date: Fri, 20 Oct 2006 22:25:42 -0300
Hi,  stormcarib friends! I guess several of our islands have been receiving the same copious rains as we have in St. Croix. Unfortunately, some people here have fared badly due to the flooding caused by the intensed, white-out, torrential rains we have been having for several days. I think today was the icing on the cake. It started about 5:00 a.m. with heavy rain, followed by a huge thunder clap, followed by RAIN! The day before, it rained all night so schools were closed and we had a relatively dry day. This time we had a relatively dry night, only to be greeting by a deluge. Schools were open and everyone had to deal with it and the flooding. At St. Mary's school the water was gushing down from the hill nearby, creating a river caused by debris in the covered gutter, which spewed out of the lifted manhole covers. I helped a woman across and she had to hang on, for dear life, to a parked pickup truck. She had to get to her car just a few feet across the street. She  made it, but the force of the water was so strong that if she had not been holding on to the truck she would have been swept off her feet. It was that dramatic. The Lightning has been equally dramatic and we made sure to cringe and cover our ears waiting for the loud thunder that usually followed. We are to expect more of the same possibly until Saturday afternoon. And let's not get the beach gear out too soon. There's a Cold Front heading this way! Besides, with all the runoff from these heavy rains, it's not advisable to go into the sea too soon. So, grab a good book, curl up somewhere cozy, better yet, close your eyes and enjoy the sound of the rain on your roof if it continues raining.

- RAIN, RAIN, RAIN AND MORE RAIN!

Hello from Frederiksted, St. Croix again,

Ooh, don't you want to scream when you erase your message?

Here I go again, we have been having downpours off and on the whole day.

I have not seen any of the flooding myself, but I heard that the highway was flooded in different areas on Thursday and the Melvin Evan's Highway too.

People from Gallows Bay, East End, Chenay Bay have told me of flooding. One of the schools requested that parents pick up their children after
school on time today because of flooding.

I am sure Frederiksted has had their share of flooding too. I went to look at the creek yesterday by the ballpark, but it was not so high then. I sat by the beautiful park and walkway down by the pier and the Sea was still rough, but beautiful as ever.

I love the rain, lightning, thunder and walking in the rain, but I am using some sense too. So I cannot verify all these places or know of all of them that have flooded.
But some people were late getting to work or could not get to work on Thursday and today too.

I, also heard that someone's fruit tree got electrocuted and burned, fruit and all. Now, I thought I heard a pineapple tree and I thought it was St. Croix, but I may have been listening to BBC and it was on another Caribbean Island?

The Jazz Fest on the third Friday in Frederiksted may be a wet one if they do have it. That is a very nice event down here in Frederiksted.

Over and out, santacruz1997

I'm in Oregon, as we speak, and missing the good sleepin' weather in STX ... DARN! I love when it gets down to the mid 70's and I can pull the comforter up around my neck. I've heard it's been raining and raining and raining and raining in St. Croix, along with more rain and thunder and lightning. Apparently the forecast calls for more rain ... HOLY COW, it's raining more there than it is here in Oregon!

Here's a picture from a previous thunderstorm; I know for a fact this is where you'll find my sweet Zoe (pronounced like Joey) this week. I bet she wishes I didn't have so many shoes ...that's one messy closet!

It's cold here in beautiful Portland, Oregon ... like in the 50's cold ..... brrrrrrrrrrrr!

Stay safe and dry everybody.

Enjoy!

Good morning from Frederiksted, St. Croix!

It has been pouring strong, torrents of rain, lightning, and thunder (someone sounds mad) since early this morning. It stops and then starts pouring again.

The waves were very high yesterday, even the boat that has been dredging by the pier everyday was not there.

I have not been able to swim for a few days now.

Rain pouring again, everyone that needed their cisterns full, is full, meson.

But some of us may be paddling a boat in the AM, we have to wait until light to see.

And it's coming from the wrong direction! Some really big, dark clouds are approaching from the South/Southwest-ish and sending a little cool breeze along with it. That's good ... the breeze can flow through are front door and cool off the house a little.

Looks like a good day to be indoors .... or sit on the porch and watch the rain ... or go to breakfast at Cane Bay Full Moon Beach Bar ... or go shopping ... or ... the options are endless! I LOVE that!

Enjoy!

Good morning from St. Croix,

It's yet another lovely day in paradise.

Yesterday the clouds were big and puffy, reflecting on the ocean; so pretty. It always amazes me to see the flat line of the clouds at the bottom - I wonder what causes that, I've noticed it many times before. Later, my husband noticed a cloud imitating a steam plume from the refinery. Pretty groovy, huh?

I noticed that not only one, but a series of waves are lined up getting ready to step off the coast of Africa. We're talking as low as 9N ! I always remember one of my sisters commenting that whenever a storm forms that low it usually means trouble for us. This first one is quite spread out and even though it was said that the track is going to be similar to the others, there is also the possibility that it can come close to the Northern Leewards if not directly upon the islands. I hope it remains just a Wave. We can always use the rain.

It's a lovely day here in St. Croix, a little humid, but that's ok.

Thank you to the correspondents in Bermuda for sharing your updates during Hurricane Florence. So happy you were able to continue communicating during the storm, and glad there were no storm related injuries.

It seems there's some stuff coming off of Africa, even the nation weather news mentioned it this morning. WOW, that surprised me. So we'll keep watching and see where these blobs travel, hopefully, they'll stay away from land.

  • Date: Tue, 5 Sep 2006 20:56:36 -0300
Greetings to all!

I've been noticing for the longest while that Florence has a tail,-tonight it looked more like a lobster claw, and I'm wondering if this appendage is going to sweep over us? Or is it going to move far enough up to avoid us. The reason, well, today we were walloped with some hefty downpours, thunder, the works and yet it did not show in the satellite images that we could expect that much out of those little "smudges". We are also told not to worry so much about Florence, but to look beyond. There's a wave much lower than Florence was and that could mean trouble for us. Well, I guess every little wave that comes off the coast now will be suspicious until it proves otherwise. Let's hang in tight and pray that this season passes quickly and without any horrific disaster for anyone.

Here we go! Hope #6 does not disturb the calm we've been having. So far so good. St. Croix got a lot of rain out of the passing wave this weekend, but now #6 is official. Where is it going? According to the expert on the Weather Channel it is going to pass the Northern Leewards and Bermuda might have to watch out. How close is it coming to the Northern Leewards? Too bad the Weather Radio is not communicating. What ever happened to the reporters on Mt. Stewart on St. Croix? Just now when we need them the most, the radio has been silent for days. Come on, guys, we need all the information you can give us and thanks for keeping us updated in the past. God bless us all. Be alert, be safe.

Goooooood morning from St. Croix!

Last night it rained .... hard!

This morning it's raining ... hard! Can't even see the ocean. I think there's some sunshine right behind this rain, no worries.

Yesterday was one of the warmest days inside our house EVER! Had to go to Cost-U-Less, just to wander in air conditioning for a while. It was, however, a gorgeous day yesterday; I spent plenty of quality time in the pool and I've got the sunburn to prove it!

Perhaps, after the sun comes out, we'll go diving at Cane Bay and look for treasure - it's their annual treasure hunt. FUN!

Hi, Caribbean friends! Greetings from St. Croix!

I'm ready to report whenever the need. This is the nervous time of year when our eyes are turned to the east while all others are turned to ERNESTO. I noticed the wave mentioned by Dave and it certainly looks ominous. It seems to be dipping downwards and it's very big. Sometimes it's better not to worry until these storms are closer to our region, but we must pay attention and be ready to alert each other. Let's hope and pray that they all go out to sea away from any land. That's the ideal, the reality is what we have to deal with especially as we approach the most dangerous time of the season for us.

Last night it was chilly; I'm not sure how low the temperature was, I'd guess around 75ish, but felt like 70 ...  good sleepin' weather! It was so cold, I had the comforter pulled all the way up around my neck. After all this heat we've been having, it was a very nice change of pace.

Also had some thunder, lightning, rain and a bit of wind. Nice to hear the wind chimes playing their tunes.

My thoughts are with those in the path of Ernesto - be safe.

In Frederiksted, St. Croix, we have a light rain with a nice breeze from the East which is nice after so much heat.

I checked with Webcam and people in Christiansted are walking along the boardwalk.

At the beach in Frederiksted, by Sand Castle on the Beach, the waves are stronger than usual and no one is out swimming. Correction, the sun came out and I see someone wading in the water. The winds picked up for just a few minutes.

Day 5 of Hurricane Season and so far we haven't had one. YIPPPEEEEEE!!!

I woke up to the sound of rain last night, I was hoping it would rain for several hours. Unfortunately, it didn't; not even enough to make an increase in the water level of the ol' cistern. Every day I do my rain dance, but it seems all the rain clouds are going around our house. I see the clouds headed in our direction, but they take a right or left turn before they get to us! My rain dance must be a little "off". I guess we'll plan to buy another truckload of water, 3rd truckload in 2 months. DANG, I wish it would rain.

Some good news: the lack of rain doesn't stop the orchids from blooming, for that I am so very happy ...

~Enjoy!

Good Morning From St Croix...

Rain showers passed over our island on and off all evening. The sound of water trickling into the cisterns is music to our ears. Skies this morning are overcast with the NWS calling for up to an 80% chance of more showers today, tonight, and tomorrow. A slight breeze is currently out of the SW.

Forecast for the annual Triathlon this coming Sunday calls for 30% chance of rain with a high of 86-F.

Good Morning From St Croix...

Much needed rain showers passed over our island last night and this morning. It added only 1/2" to our cisterns but we'll take it. The air is alive with the smell of plant life. Currently skies are overcast with concentrations of thick dark rain clouds strewn about the region. From our front gallery it appears St Thomas and St John are getting their share of rain as well.

Today's forecast calls for 60% chance of rain and possibly a T-storm this afternoon. Bring it on!

Good Morning from St Croix.

A beautiful Cruzian morning with partly cloudy skies and 14 MPH breezes out
of the east. Today's high expected to reach the mid 80's-F. What a surprise!

Dry season is in full swing. The fire department has been dealing with brush
fires on an almost daily basis. We had a short sprinkle two nights ago, and
the night before that, which added a small bit to our cisterns - and made
the air smell great - but it wasn't close to what we need. I hesitate to cut
the grass as the lawn tractor kicks up dirt than grass. The ground is dry,
dry, dry. Please send more rain!
