- Dry Weather Prevails
  • From: William Mc Taggart <wmctagga at candw.ky>

Hey....you guys in the Eastern and Northern Caribbean.... send  some of that soggy weather you are/were having to us in the Western Caribbean.  We are dry and could use the rain.  We had a short lived shower a few nights ago that dumped .25" of rain.  Cisterns are empty, and the island is brown and dusty.  Thankfully we have desalinated city water to keep us watered.

The monthly rainfall is only .55". Our annual total for 2007 is just 2.36", about a 4.5" shortfall for the year.
Temperatures for 2007 have been above normal, and I can feel the summer heat coming on now.  Already my station has recorded a high of 90°F.              I did however record our lowest temperature for the year,  62°F, on April 18, following the passage of a cold front and what was probably the last cool spell for this 'winter season'.  Probably it was the remnants of this front, which brought the soggy weather to the Northern and Eastern Islands. We received just a trace from it.

Water temperatures have been really pleasant (read warm) for the 'winter' season, due to the lack of "COLD" fronts, so the local population have been spending Saturdays and Sundays at the beach and boating.  Rum Point is the place for boaters to congregate and 'get loud'.  Usually we will get an estimated 50-75 boats anchored on a Sunday afternoon.

After 1 month of being offline because of computer problems, (had to buy a new one),  I finally got my weather station broadcasting again.

Current conditions:

Mainly sunshine with puffs of cumulus clouds floating by.
Temperature 88°  Humidity 67%  Heat Index 97°F (Whew)
Winds NE at 5-10 Knots
Rainfall 0"

According to the official 5 day forecast, it looks like we are in for much of the same weather.

Enjoy your weekend

William

- Dry and windy

  • Date: Mon, 19 Mar 2007 19:59:34 -0500
Time certainly flies. It has been quite awhile since I posted a report. Not much excitement in the weather.

Days typically have been mostly sunny, warm and windy.

This "winter" season has been quite warm, with mean temperatures being near 2° above normal. The cold fronts have had no punch and are few and far between. The few fronts we have had drift through, resulted in the cruise ships either by-passing us, or being limited due to the capacity of alternate mooring facilities. We can have up to 8 ships in on a single day. Our low temperature for the year was 68° in February and the high 88° in January, February and March. Rainfall is scarce, with only 1.32" recorded, a deficit of 5" according to my data. The island is dusty and brown. Oh for some rain!!

Current Temp. 79°
Winds: ENE at 10-15 knots
Humidity 73%
Barometer 1018 Mb
Conditions: Few clouds. No rain in sight.

Enjoy your evening.
William

A cloudless day here in Grand Cayman.  Winds are Easterly 10-15 knots and gusty.  Temperature 85°F. Today's high 87°F.  Humidity 64%.  Rainfall 0.00.  Barometer steady 29.93".

Beach weather and I am at home piddling on this computer :)

Here is a review of December weather.
The monthly temperature range was 74° - 88°F with an average of 80°F. The statistical average is 78°F.
The daily high temperature never went below 80°F
I recorded 5.22" of rainfall. The 10 year average is 2.75".
Winds were predominantly from the East.  I recorded a high wind of 24 knots. (My station is inland)

Let's see what January will bring.  So far we have had .16" rainfall and warm breezy days.

Have a Great weekend

- Seasons Greetings!

  • Date: Mon, 25 Dec 2006 10:17:59 -0500
Merry Christmas to all!

An absolutely beautiful day here in Cayman.  Sun is shining, breeze is blowing 10-15 knots from the SE, and temperature 85°, Humidity 85%.  Personally I would have preferred the temps a bit cooler, say 75°, and lower humidity. It looks like cooler temps are on the way though.

Time for family gatherings, turkey, ham, beef and pork, breadfruit (if in season), heavy cakes...the works :), and assembling the toys!

Yet, despite the happy time of year Christmas is, let us remember that there are those who for one reason or the other, it will not be a  joyous time.  This past week we had three deaths on our roads, 2 of them teenagers in the same vehicle.  How sad.

Enjoy your holidays.

Cool weather 79°, overcast skies, occasional light drizzle, NE winds 15-20 knots, humidity 81%. Sure beats the cold temps I returned from in Houston just a few days ago, although I do enjoy cold crisp air occasionally. Been watching that blob of cold cloud tops off to our south, official forecast is for rain, and winds 20 - 25 knots tomorrow. We are certainly enjoying the Christmas breeze, hopefully it will continue through Christmas.

Enjoy the weekend.

After one week of cloudy, cool weather and only 1" rain to show for it, the sun is shining today with warm temps and pleasant breeze.:) It was really refreshing having temperatures in the 70's with low humidity. Everyone seemed energized. With the high pressure over the NE USA, winds are now out of the NE.

Current: Partly Cloudy
Temp; 82°

- Cloudy & Cool
  • From: William H McTaggart <wmctagga at candw.ky>
  • Date: Wed, 22 Nov 2006 09:01:53 -0500
Weather remains overcast, cool and breezy, with north to north west winds and low humidity. Not likely to get any significant rain. If indeed any does occur, it would be just a light drizzle.  Shallow clouds do not equate to rainfall :)
This is probably one of the strongest nor'westers (cold front) we have experienced in several years.  With the supporting high pressure over the Dixie States, the conditions should remain for another couple of days.  This is certainly a pleasant change from the hot, humid summer this year.
Waves are rough on the west and north sides of the island, so the cruise ship stops are limited to three anchoring on the south side at the alternate facilities. (6 ships are scheduled for today, 7 for tomorrow).   I understand the waterfront road in George Town had to be closed because of flooding from the wave action, which is not unusual with this weather.

Current Conditions:  Cloudy
Temp:   74°, Humidity 56%
Winds:  N to NW at 10-15 Knots Gusting to 20 knots
Waves: 5-7
Rainfall:  0.00

Yikes, low battery on station message means no sun to charge solar battery :)
Enjoy your day

Strong winds today (15-25 knots) from the North, Northeast, leading to heavy seas due to a large  high over the Southern US.

Strong winds and seas expected to continue for a few more days, hopefully settled down for the Butterfield Triathlon this sunday near the Courtyard Marriot.

The frontal trough has now pushed past Cayman towards the eastern Caribbean, with a large 'blob' at the end, hopefully this will not break off and turn tropical, wind shear still high in Caribbean, so very unlikely.

Apart from that will be cooler than usual with a high in the mid 70's and a low in the high 60's, brrr.

An overcast day here in Grand Cayman, compliments of the (stationary?) cold front lurking near the Yucatan. Not much rain in my area though, only .11" so far. Maybe if the front drifts southward we will get some rain. Temperatures are still quite warm with a high today of 89° and overnight low of 75°. We really need a strong cold front to cool things off.

Current weather:
Overcast with some shower activity.

After the high temperature of 91° on Saturday, it appears that we are finally getting a cool down. Daytime highs have been hovering at 88°F and the low temps have been below 75° for the past two days. The cool air is finally 'drifting' south. Winds were from the North today at 5 - 10 Knots and mostly clear skies.

Currently 73°, winds calm, Humidity 86%, Clear Skies. The air is cool and 'crisp' despite the humidity. A very pleasant evening here.

Have a good evening.

- Season winding down

  • Date: Sat, 11 Nov 2006 10:28:43 -0500
Despite what the experts predicted for the hurricane season this year, the Atlantic has been a relatively quiet for 2006, except for Bermuda's bout with Florence. Just a few more weeks before the season ends. The Western Pacific, in particular Philippines, seems to be the 'target' this year.

Another sunny day here in paradise, partly cloudy skies, Temp 88°, Humidity 70%. Winds East at 5-10 Knots. This makes it a warm muggy day. Maybe we will get some rain later today, as looking to the east, the localized rain clouds building. This is a holiday weekend in the Cayman Islands, as well as the start of Pirates week. http://www.piratesweekfestival.com/ The dates were changed this year to November, as October is typically our rainiest month averaging 10". Last year we had 16" in October.

I hope the weather will remain good this weekend as the waters of Cayman are calling me. :)

Have a GREAT day!

A magnificent day here in Grand Cayman. Temps in the high 80's, lower humidity, 65%, bright sunshine, puffs of cumulus clouds cruising along in the 10-15 knot easterly winds, make for a warm but comfortable day especially if you have a hammock hung between two trees. Ahhh life in the Caribbean.

The "cold" front that passed through here and got caught up in the tropical wave looks like it is dissipating to the west near the Yucatan. My records indicate we received 5" rainfall from this system, with 2.75" falling on the 28 Oct. October rainfall total was 9.23", 1" above average.

I was in Houston when the cold front passed through there, and it got quite nippy. My flight back from Houston Thursday was delayed 6 hours due to mechanical problems, so I was stuck in George Bush Intercontinental Airport for 9 hours...UGH!! Not a particularly exciting airport terminal to spend a day in :)

Full moon is this tomorrow night, so if weather is good I am heading out on my boat for a moonlight cruise.

Have a GREAT weekend.

Well I was fortunate enough, I think, to see my second moon halo since living
in
Cayman. My reservations are mainly based on "Folklore" that a moon halo is a
sign
of bad weather to come. Mish mash. Hopefully!!

Wish I had a picture of this phenomenon, but unfortunately the ring is so wide,
the
lens on my digital camera couldn't quite capture the entirety of this amazing

The area of unsettled weather in the western Caribbean, has given us overcast skies today, more bearable temperatures, and intermittent threat of showers. Not a particularly great day for boating or the beach, but I am sure there were some diehards :)

At around 4pm the skies darkened, and we experienced a downpour which dumped a little more than 1" rainfall in < 1 hour. Lots of lightening and some heavy thunder rattling the windows and setting off security alarms.

Just a hint of the moon through the , still overcast skies, with lightening on the horizon. We'll have to see if the 'mess' to our southwest will affect us overnight, bypass us, or dissipate.

Current Temp 81°,
Winds NE < 5 knots
Humidity 88%
Today's rainfall 1.28"

A really HOT and humid day here in Grand Cayman.  Temperature 87°F from a high of 93°F at 12:30pm.  Factor in the humidity and it feels like walking into a furnace from the comfortable 77° air conditioning.
Winds from the East at 10-15 knots, which makes it more bearable.
Skies are partly cloudy with the usual convection clouds forming down the center of the island, so (hopefully) we may  have a rain shower later this afternoon to cool things off.  Speaking of rainfall, we have had only .81" at this location for this month so far.

The full moon last night was absolutely beautiful.  Seized the opportunity for some family time, so a group of us on 2 boats went out in the North Sound, anchored at Rum Point and enjoyed the moonlight. Kids and adults alike enjoyed the full moon swim experience.

Have a wonderful weekend.

The upper low trough continues to give GC unsettled weather, lots of hard isolated showers and some good lightening shows.
A wave is due to pass in to the area soon, and combined with upper low should bring more of the same, should be interesting to see how much convection is thrown up when the 2 interact.
My advice is don't leave the brolley at home, more lunch time showers ahead!!
Two mile sdea swim from Calico Jacks on Saturday, 10 am I think, hope the sea stays calm for that.

Hi all, this is my first time reporting here. I guess was waiting for something spectacular to talk about. Well last night was most meteorologically spectacular event I've seen for a very long time. The lightning cells seemed to be right over us in the Fairbanks Rd area, with streaks seeming to touch the ground. The power went out a few times for us totalling nearly four hours. A few areas in West Bay did not experience any power failure. My daughter described the lightning as rapid-fire at one time, and my three year old son ran around in circles screaming before he dove under a big comforter. The sky lit up like day, and though there were no lights you could clearly make out the details of the homes in the area with each lightning streak. There was a cool breeze around each shower, making the life without AC more bearable.

This morning there are still thunderstorms and heavy rain showers around Grand Cayman. It is partly cloudy with the puffy white clouds and blue sky, trying to compete with the dark heavy clouds and gray sky. The contrast is beautiful!

We have been without power now, in South Sound (Hurleys' end) for about an
hour. It came on briefly, but didn't last very long. Thankfully we have our
generator powered up and are enjoying creature comforts.

The storm itself has been pretty impressive. I was fortunate enough to witness
a spectacular lightning bolt in the direction of industrial park. This was
followed by two other bolts, from sky to ground (so it seemed). Shortly after
we lost power.

Not sure how long this will last. There has been a significant amount of
rainful and the air is cool outside. Personally, I wouldn't want to be out on
the roads right now.

Keep Safe.

An absolutely beautiful, sunny day here in Cayman, albeit HOT! Temps 91 with a heat index of 106...WHEW!! Fortunately, winds are SSE 10-15 knots which helps to keep it more bearable, as long as you are in the shade in a hammock. Time to hit the beach though, the warm Caribbean waters are calling! Had a short duration rain shower of .40" this morning at 6:30am, accompanied with wind gust to 30mph. So far for the month rainfall is 6.5", about 2" short of the 30 year average.

Jelly fish have gone, all clear given.

Today is slightly cloudy, this afternoon we have an upper level low moving into the area, so expect plenty of cloud and some heavy showers this arvo.

Helen is no threat to the Caribbean , a new Invest AL96, is an area to watch and may become Isaac, situated at about 12.5 north, between the Cape Verdes and the Leewards. It's moving WNW, and has the potential to be a threat do the Caribbean, but the models having it moving more North in the next few days and should curve out to into the Atlantic. With all the strong fronts coming off the Eastern US seaboard, it shouldn't be a threat to land.
But worth watching.

In front of AL96 is another wave that may be a problem in the next few days, worth keeping an eye, it's peak season afterall.

Should have known better, nice weekend, ha!

Wave came over on Saturday and we had a great lightening shows, the windows rattling in the thunder.
Some string gusts but not much rain. But the remains of the wave burnt off on Sunday to give a scorchio afternoon.
Seaswim cancelled as the waters on the west and south have a large colony of Jellies (sea Wasps I believe), spotted a few at Rum point on sunday too.
Think they're due to the lack of waves we've had for a while, so keep out the sea over the next few days is my advice.
Helene is already way North of Cayman and has no chance of getting us, Bermuda may not be so lucky.
Many models picking up another wave coming off Africa and developing it over this week to become TS Isaac, hopefully will stay north of the Leewards again.
96F here at the mo, with humidity down to 55%, still too hot for my British sensibilties.
Have a great day everyone

Morning everyone from Grand Cayman.

2.74 inches of rain fell in about an hour yesterday afternoon in Georgetown, when the sun came out it sure became humid.

Today is going to be much the same, sunny at the moment but with unstable conditions aloft I expect another heavy shower around lunch.

Very light wind 70% humidity is giving a heat index of 104, and still before 8 in the morning.

Watching TD8 at the moment just south west of the Cape Verdes, still fairly disorganised, and fairly north already to be a hazard for the Caribbean, historically most TD's and TS's here will move Northwest above the Leeward's and may be only a potential hazard to Bermuda, but over a week away from that.

At the moment it is moving west and it is worth just keeping one eye on at the moment

Have a good day everyone

thunder, lightning and absolutely nothing to substantiate this on the "radar"
(last time I looked). It started out a beautiful morning too.

Winds are windy, and I am just about to venture out to lunch. Actually saw a
bolt of lightning right in front of the window I am at. Rather spectacular
considering visibility is pretty naff right now!!

- September storm
  • From: William H McTaggart <wmctagga at candw.ky>
  • Date: Sat, 02 Sep 2006 20:31:39 -0500
September has come in like a lion!

Last night we experienced a 'light show' from a storm that dumped  .36" of rain in about 15 minutes in my area.

Today dawned partly cloudy, the air heavy with moisture and the temperature quickly rising to a high of 91 at 12 noon.   I prepped my boat and launched it in the early afternoon, by which time the afternoon convective clouds had become heavy and dark.  I moored my boat in the canal at my Dad's home, went inside to visit. Shortly thereafter, there was a cloudburst in the George Town area. I recorded 0.58" ( .57" in 20 minutes) while the George Town Port recorded 0.95".

Driving home with trailer in tow, I pulled off for two police cars heading in the opposite direction.  Arriving home, I received a call informing me that there had been a tornado in the very area that I had just come from, (Prospect Park/Bonnieview sub-division).  This tornado (a very rare occurrence for us) affected the very canal basin I had just navigated, creating 'white caps' and tearing off some roof tiles of one house.  The tornado went on to damage several houses in its path, lifting sections of several roofs, moving a pick-up truck, breaking electrical wires and street lamps effectively knocking out power to the area, taking a trampoline at an estimated height of 100 feet then 'spitting' it back out as well as other debris.  The thunderstorm then rained itself out over the central mangrove swamp and the North Sound.

This evening is clear with temperature of 80, 85% humidity, heat index 85.  Winds are calm.  I am thankful for the A/C.

Keeping an eye on the wave in the Eastern Caribbean, and the others in the Atlantic.
Have a great weekend.

- Twister In Cayman
  • From: "John Ferguson" <caribblue at gmail.com>
  • Date: Sat, 2 Sep 2006 18:23:56 -0500
Good evening all....this will be quick as I do not have all the facts about it. Around 3:15 this afternoon, the area around Prospect was struck by a tornado. Raymond Northover was an eye witness to the twister. I just hung up the phone with him and he told me the wind came from North Sound, picking up garbage cans, lawn chairs, etc. Then the funnel came down and picked up a Ford F150 and set it back down 30 feet away, on the wheels. It then struck a house, removing the tile roof and hurling the tiles in the air, the next house also sustaining roof damage....the funnel then jumped over the next house and hit the third, removing it's zinc roof and plywood. Some of the power lines were ripped off and sparks were hitting the ground. After that, the funnel drew back up into the clouds and disappeared. There was a small water spout forming along with the funnel cloud but never touched down. No reports of any injuries, but people were all out and assessing damage. More on this as the details become available.

An absolutely beautiful, clear, sunny day here in Grand Cayman.  Temp 88, Wind 5 kt out of the South/SW, courtesy of TS Ernesto, despite being 300 miles to the north.  (Wind switch from NE to S occurred at 8am)

A perfect day to hit the beach, go fishing, flying.....whatever your fancy!  I need to get my boat back in the water :)

To our friends and family in Miami and all Florida, (of which there are many).... keep safe.

Our attention should now focus on the topical waves in the Central Atlantic. Any one of these could be our next depression. Hopefully they will fizzle out or stay out in the open Atlantic. Remember we are approaching the peak of the hurricane season.  Don't let your guard down. Thanks Dave for bringing them to our attention.

Have a great day.

Been looking at infared satelites and this storm seems to be splitting.  This could either be great news if it blows itself out.  However if it splits then one part may go off on its own course?
Anyone else see this?  If so what is your reaction to this.  I hope it doesn't come here but i cant rest just yet!!

Looks like we are going to be spared again, thank goodness, however I am still being prepared incase it bounces off of Jamaica or Cuba,  you never know what will happen.  I am waiting for it to go passed us before I will relax totally.
Been to get the water needed two days ago and food is in the cupboards so i am ready!!!
Their are going to be extra flights today put on by Cayman Airways incase they have to cancel flights or close the airport tomorrow.
Stay safe everyone, my heart and prayers are going out to all of you in the path of this monster.

CORRECTION!!

Just correcting my previous post which was a cut and paste from the NHC public advisory http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MIATCPAT5+shtml/261431.shtml stating we are on Hurricane Watch. This conflicts with the official Cayman government post which is a Tropical Storm Watch. http://www.gov.ky/portal/page?_pageid=1142,1&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL

Well, TD5 is now upgraded to TS Ernesto, and yes, our eyes are turned to the East following very closely the storm's progress. The forecast track changes with every new bulletin, and now puts the storm track between Cayman Brac and Grand Cayman. We'll see, these storms can defy all logic, and do as they please :)!! Maybe the wind shear will do a "number" on Ernesto.

Our authorities issued the following at 1pm today http://www.caymanprepared.ky/portal/page?_pageid=1143,1745803&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL and
http://www.gov.ky/portal/page?_pageid=1142,1&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL

Went by the grocery store this morning and it was crowded and busy with people buying supplies. With Ivan still in our minds "we ain't taking no chances!!". I understand one gas station ran out of gas, but should be replenished by now. (Maybe there were others)

Today was really hot and humid and has been for the past several days. 91 was the high with a heat index of 107. No rainfall. I plan to keep my weather station up and running, although I may have to lower the pole the anemometer is attached to as it has no 'guy wires' to steady it during high wind conditions, but it will remain in place. and functional as long as we have power and internet connection.

Will keep you posted.

George Town started off this morning bright and sunny. Now, we have a big black and threathening cloud looming over us. There has been some rainful and just now lightning and thunder came into the equation. I suspect this will continue throughout the day, caused by the blob approaching us from the east. It looks like 5pm outside right now!!

I personally am keeping a close eye on 97L. Hopefully this wave will not survive the coast of Venezuela. However, if it does, forecasters believe this has potential to turn into a major hurricane. Lets hope not, but I think we will have a better idea either later today or tomorrow morning if there is the need to strap things down and stock up on food/water etc.

With eyes focused on TS Chris, the latest forecast track certainly puts him closer to Cayman than was previously forecast.
It certainly would be unusual if TS Chris were to enter the Caribbean basin from the North!   But then, Hurricanes do sometimes defy reason.  I recall learning in my geography class back in the early 70's that hurricanes very seldom go south.  I will hold him to that rule. :)

To those in the path of Chris or are now being affected, Keep safe.

Cayman weather has been wet and overcast all day.  The satellite pictures however can be deceiving.  It would appear by the satellite pics that we have been having continuous heavy rain all day long....well not so.  I have recorded just over 1" of rainfall at my location. Other areas probably had more. There have been periods of heavy rain accompanied with lightening and thunder, but these have been brief.  On Sunday lightening knocked out power to several areas of the island, but most were restored within 2 hours.
Kudos to dedicated workers at CUC.

The rainfall deficit is gradually being reduced. Total rainfall (to July) so far for the year is 24". Rainfall for June was 10" and July 10.5", which is about 50% above normal for both months.  At the end of June the deficit stood at 1".  (As per my station) . What is interesting is that the rain has occurred mainly during the first and last weeks of the month for June, July and now August. (Just an observation)

Until next time......Keep dry.

The rain has subsided, but unfortunately it doesn't look like that is it for the day - in fact, probably not for the next few days.  There is a flare up just south-east of Jamaica and a whole bunch of cloud etc following that.  However, it currently doesn't look like it's going anywhere.

With some untimely engine issues it's hard to get the pictures that I like to post. That being said, the wind has been super calm lately, Summer time squalls are starting to build but guess what time of the year it is?........  Seas are calm and I would imagine that diving on the north wall must be at it's finest. Heres one for any mechanics out there, our anyone that happens to own a 60hp 4stroke Yamaha outboard(2002)........ can you tell me what the firing order is? Which spark plug wires go to which plug starting at the top.
I know what you're thinking..... I didn't write it down if I did I wouldn't of had to ask the really embarrassing question, anyway if anyone can help me with that question drop me an e-mail.
It's been getting hotter and hotter but I some time think it's just the lack of wind that makes it unbearable.

There has not been any significant weather to repot from Grand Cayman for the past week. We have had some passing light showers but nothing to get excited about. :) Daytime Temperatures in upper 80's low 90's, nighttime in upper 70's low 80's depending where you are. Winds have been light 10-15MPH. Great weather for the beach!

Have been watching the wave that brought rain to the Leeward Islands the past couple of days and if it holds together, we may be in for some rainfall Thursday/Friday. The upper westerlies are still fairly strong, 30-50 Knots 30000' and above http://adds.aviationweather.noaa.gov/winds/ so not much chance of it developing at this time.

Until next time.

The cloud cover and rain is out of here, and the sun is shining. After a week of rain, it is welcomed. Now comes the heat and humidity! Skies are hazy, with puffs of cumulus clouds speeding by in the 15-20 knot winds out of the SSE. Seas are 4-6'. Winds are forecast to decrease to 10-15 knots and seas 3-5 feet by this afternoon.

Total rain so far for June is 11.3" at my location, which is approximately 5" above average for the month. Other areas had significantly more rainfall, especially in East End where a station recorded 17". www.weatherincayman.com has links to weather stations located around the island. No significant rainfall since Saturday.

Looks like TD-1---> TS Alberto could reach Hurricane status before landfall in Florida according to the latest bulletin. Keep safe Florida!

Have a Great day everyone.

A pleasant good morning to everyone. After spending 3 days in the hospital for tests, probes, pipe-cleaning, etc. it was nice to finally connect a flight back to Cayman. Having postponing my Friday flight back to Saturday, when I called they said my flight was departing at 5:15 p.m. As Alberto continued to empty it's pockets of rain on Cayman, the flight was delayed until 9:40 p.m. Checking out of my room at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, I had no choice other than to hang out in Miami Intl. Much to my pleasure, they had a seat for me on the 3: 45p.m. flight home! Upon my arrival to the gate, I learned that the Friday night flight had been cancelled anyway, and everyone was so glad to make this flight. My special thanks to Cayman Airways and all of it's staff for all of their hard work making everyone as comfortable as possible, the flight crew for making the flight smooth and short, and for all the staff at Kendall Regional for the peace-of-mind.

With over 35 new plants in the ground around the yard, I was glad to return to the rain and that the  winds had only minamal damage. My neighbor lost 2 papaya trees, but that was it. My cistern is overflowing once again, had very minor flooding in the house, now that the sun is out (Monday morning) I can get out and see where the water came in....and start on the weed-pulling..

Thanks again to everyone for making my journey successful.
Good luck this season!

John

Hi All,

Well my flight is delayed until later on in the afternoon so I thought I would give you the update changes we have had.

SUNS OUT..... Yes we got a sunshine break. I was hoping for this so maybe it will give the ground a bit of time to swallow some of this water. Sun came out just before 12:00 noon and has been out ever since. I see on the satellite image the break in the cloud conditions but still a lot of moisture coming off the Honduras coast. So we may continue have rain showers passing through on and off.

Not much more to report, but thought I would get the changes out. Here is the latest:

Wind - S to SE at 10 to 15 MPH
Temp - 90 F
DewPT - 78 F
Humidity - 70%
Baro - 29.83 (Slight Fall)
Forcast - Increasing Clouds later in the evening with chance of a shower or two.

Good Morning StormCarib World,

Well I have been very busy flying since my first post for the season, so I have not had much time at the old 'puter. My weather station however continues to collect the data and save all the daily conditions while I am busy.

Others including my brother William has of course been keeping the site notified of the conditions here in Cayman. We have certainly got the rain everyone was hoping for that I mentioned would come shortly in my last post. Yes the tropical moisture flow from the Central America area started the season out with a bang for us bringing all the rain that has been missing, ALL at one time....WOW, have we had rain.

Tropical Depression One has formed out of this flow and did so between the Honduras coastline and Cayman. It is now on its merry way toward the NW. Although it is moving away, the Tropical flow from C.A. is still very much present and therefore we will continue to get times of rain and thunderstorms.

I have been flying during the time this area of weather was building so with the onboard data in the cockpit was able to see the changes occurring as I flew in and out of Cayman. One very dominant change occurred yesterday from all other days was the winds at different altitudes was so amazing and extreme. Above 20,000 ft the winds were just 10-18 knots, 20,000 ft down to 3,000 the winds were anywhere between 45-65 knots, and 3,000 ft to the surface were just 8-15 knots. I mention this because the higher winds normally occur at the higher levels and were almost sandwiched with extreme changes on both ends. Yes a bumpy ride passing through these changes, but only for a short duration.

Now back to the Island. We have had a total of 15.73 inches of rain since this all started and as others mentioned a lot of flooding due to the rain rate during certain downpours, as much as 4 inches in 3 hours. So Cayman is very much saturated. This morning was amazing at about 6:00 a.m. when a band of extremely heavy rain showers passed through and lasted only about an hour bringing 2.58 inches of rain and wind speeds of 51 MPH recorded on my station. I woke up to a big mess, leaves, branches, and other stuff all over the place. A "Mini Ivan" is all that it reminded me of when I walked outside. We lost power as this little storm downed a power pole in South Sound and knocked electricity out until about 7:30.

Cayman Brac and Little Cayman have also been getting the rain but probably not as severe, but needless to say enough to close the runway in Cayman Brac due to it being flooded. About the first 600' of it under water.

Well I head back out to fly this afternoon to Miami and back, then onwards to spending the night in Cayman Brac (depending on the runway conditions), so I may not be able to do an evening update. I finish my 2 day rotation of flying tomorrow afternoon so I will pick up with a report tomorrow evening and update you. So until then everyone take care and have a great day.

Here is the current data:
Winds - S to SSE at 8 - 12 MPH (Higher in rain)
Max Winds Recorded (Today) - 51 MPH
Temp - 84 F
DewPT - 82 F
Baro - 29.85 in (Slight Rise)
Rain - 2.58 in (Today) / 15.73 in (June so far) / 16.32 (Annual so far)
Forcast - Cloudy with contiung times of rain, heavy at times with gusty winds.

Have a lovely day.

Good Morning all,
Well its looks like the start of the season is upon us!!!!  The tropical rain that we have experienced will be passing now over the next 24hours.  We could be in for some more rain though!!!  Think the garden has had enough.
So far no big flights have been cancelled, yet but the Miami flight has not yet gone out and it is 10am and it was supposed to leave at 8am!!!  Little Cayman flights have been cancelled so lets just watch and see what happens.  The airport is quiet for a saturday!!
On the way to work this morning i found that Walkers Road had some very bad flooding along with Denham Thompson too.  Lets hope we get sun soon to dry it all out.
We, are over the worst on this island by the looks of the reports so lets all be glad for that.
Have a great day,  stay in and enjoy the World Cup!!!
Speak to you all soon
Helen

The rains held off for most of the afternoon, with only light drizzle, allowing some of the flood waters to dissipate. That is about to change as it is now pouring down rain. (Before I could post the rain changed to a drizzle.)

Government schools closed early today.
Looks like we may be in for lots more rain tonight according to the satellite picture.  We'll see!!

According to reports, that low pressure to the SW of us is becoming better organized.  I had a look at the visible satellite floater loop http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/satellite.shtml and the low is visible.

This is a holiday weekend in the Cayman Islands, so hopefully this system will move out of the area so that we can get some Sun, Sand & Sea.

Keep Dry

Well...we wanted and needed rain, we sure got it! It has rained everyday since May 31st.

So far we have had a total of 8" of rainfall for the month of June with 3.8" of that falling since midnight, and it continues to rain. There is flooding on the roads and in low lying areas. (My two yellow labs love it.) Our 30 year average for June is 6". Looks like we are on the way to reduce our 10" deficit. .

Temp 76. Winds 5-10kts from SE to S increasing to 15-20 kts in squalls with gusts to 28kts. Barometric pressure is steady at 29.84"

A surface low is developing off the coast of Belize, and according to forecasts, could develop into a tropical system over the next couple of days. We will be keeping watchful eye on that one.

Have a great day.

Well it's rained all afternoon and most of the morning. Yes we needed it but not all at once. Anyway looks like maybe a little surf at the end of the week. Sea itch is in the water, makes you think twice about the paddle out. Buying some more canned food tomorrow, trying not to be one of those people standing in line at the last moment.

Hey all

Hope everyone is prepared for Hurricane season again. Get your supplies before
there is a mad rush, because it is inevitable there will be!!

Anyway. It has rained and rained and rained today - I don't think it has
stopped
(at least not in George Town). Even though the weather is really crappy, at
least
it didn't deter the three cruise ships and its passengers who visit Cayman
today.

So that is my six cents worth until something more drastic happens (maybe like
World Cup footie game on Saturday - which I shall be watching at Castaways at
an
ungodly hour of 7.30am!!).

Have a good day all.

Well the more things change the more they stay the same! One would think, that this day in age we could manage to find fuel for our boat that doesn't have water in it. WATER??? you say! Yes water. Some where between the discharge terminal and the tanks of the few fuel docks we have on the island, water seems to become a factor. Water in the fuel tank tends to be a problem to say the least. So needless to say yesterday was spent doing some draining and filter changing.
Today was spent in a much more relaxing pace. Fishing!!!! It rained on and off on the island, we skirted most of the squalls as we fish about 10-12 miles off shore. Wind blew from the south between 0-16 knots depending what rain clouds were in the area. Not much in the way of fish, a few small yellow fin, small rainbow runners. I had fresh tuna for dinner!!!!!
Looks like a nice day for tomorrow. Just saw Dr. Steve for the first time this year. Lets all hope it all good news this year.

The grass has turned green again! We had gone so long with out any rain the grass had turned all brown and crispy. It sticks in your feet when you walk on it. Well not any more, it has finally rained and it did it Caribbean style.
It quickly cleared up and the chance of having a Saturday afternoon was quickly washed away with the dust that had been building up for a few months.
Off tomorrow and Tuesday, checked the satellite picture, not looking bad but that could change. Might have some new pictures for you. Tides look like they might be a little more in the favor of the hook. Tunas beware!

And it Rained....... 2.30" inches fell this morning, creating some localized flooding. We have been dry for so long that the ground soaks it up. You can almost watch the leaves and grass turn green again! Sitting in my garage enjoying the rain and suddenly "CRACK" then instant "BOOM". Lightening strike probably within 500 feet. Skies cleared earlier, but Cumulus clouds are moving in from the south making for an overcast sky. Cloud bases at 2000' More rain in the forecast.

IT is amazing how quickly the weather changes.  It is..like well....the weather was just waiting for June to roll around to get active!!  Been following that weather system south of Jamaica moving northward from Central America. Looks like Jamaica, Hispanola and Cuba are in for some rain.

We had localized showers again today, to the tune of 0.25" at my location.  Just checked out our local forecast for the weekend and it looks like it will be weather for ducks.  Not unusual though for this time of year.  There goes my plans for the weekend.

Sat  31°C | 24°C 88°F | 75°F East to southeast 10 to 15 knots today, 15 to 20 knots tonight with higher gusts in and around showers Moderate to rough with wave heights of 3 to 5 feet. "All small craft should exercise caution over open waters."

Sun  31°C | 24°C 87°F | 76°F South to southeast 20 to 25 knots today, 15 to 20 knots tonight. Rough with wave heights of 5 to 7 feet. "All small craft should remain in safe harbour until further notice."

Rain at last!!
We finally received rain today to the tune of 1.25" at this location.  The rain was localized and fell mainly in the capital George Town and immediate surrounding areas, including the Airport, for about 1 hour.
Total rainfall for May was 2"  which is 4" below average. Total rainfall for the year is 4.8", 10" below the average to date. (Note I am about 1/4 mile from the local met office).
The 30 year averages can be found on the Met office website http://www.gov.ky/portal/page?_pageid=1142,1481970&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL. It is unfortunate that they do not post current data.

Temperatures have been climbing since my last report with daily highs in the upper 80's low 90's, with heat index near 100. WHEW!   Winds have been generally 10-15 knots from the East/South East. Perfect weather for Sea, Sand and Sun.

I noticed  that recently the activity within the  ITCZ has shifted a little further North, but we are still a couple of months off from the Cape Verde season, but then again weather is unpredictable.  Looks like the upper level westerlies are still dominating the Caribbean, but this could change in the blink of an eye. http://adds.aviationweather.noaa.gov/winds/ and http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/tropic/real-time/atlantic/winds/wg8dlm1.html Water temperatures are warming up quickly.

With the official predictions for an above average season, we will all be monitoring this site and http://www.weather.com/maps/maptype/satelliteworld/caribbeansatellite_large.html for weather information.  Let me encourage everyone to listen to your local authorities when weather bulletins are issued and prepare now for the season.

May we all experience a quiet Hurricane season.

Hi all,
With the weather as nice as it's been the last few days, it's hard to find the time to sit and as the saying goes put pen to paper.
It's been light wind 5-15knts out of the south to east direction, the sea weed that has been coming from the south courtesy of the wind as produced some good dolphin fishing. I've managed to find sometime off of work lately and have got some nice tunas in the cooler. Fishing has been good but it sure is getting hot no doubt that summer is here. I heard someone say something about spring the other day, spring I thought, we really don't get one of those. I mean winter is questionable on a cold day here. I think the record low is in the 50's some where, something I should know but I don't, time for a little research.
Not much else to report traffic isn't as bad as the months past, slow season is a relief for the roads, think we got to many cars.
Thought I enclose a picture or two from Easter Monday, we closed the park and I got the day off!!! To say the least the fish were biting!!
That's all for now, 5 days and counting. Hope all will be safe

- Hello Storm Carib World
  • From: Chris McTaggart <cmctagga at candw.ky>
  • Date: Mon, 22 May 2006 02:26:53 -0500
Hello Storm Carib World,

It certainly has been a while since I have posted but there has been nothing to report here from Cayman. Since the last Tropical Season we have experienced very little weather activity including rain.

I have been very busy flying the skies and I must say the Islands traffic has never really slowed down this year. Our little airline has had a fantastic season, and to be honest we never really had a slow season like we normally do after the Winter ended. Which is great for us!

Summer is really here as the temperatures have risen and now the daily thunderstorms are making themselves more prominent especially over the Island of Cuba which I cross over daily. Last two days I have had to deviate around weather for the first time in months.

Anyway, since it is close to the beginning of the Tropical Season (can you believe so soon), I thought I would test my posting on the site. Seems like the season comes around faster every year.

The mid-level easterly flows and the moisture up flow from the south is starting to become more prominent now, so local viewers not to worry the grass will be watered soon although it is late.

As things start to change I will begin to post once again on a regular basis.
Until then, my best regards to all you viewers that pop by the site.

Captain Chris McTaggart
Savannah, Grand Cayman.

Well it's raining!! It's been months since the sky has been overcast. The last few days have been fire hot. Not a cloud in sky and the humidity starting to rise. Summer must be here! It started clouding up this afternoon and now it's been drizzling for about an hour now. The island is in need of the rain. It's been a while since my lawn has been green. 15 days to go, hope it's a quite season

Title: Dry and Hot in Grand Cayman!

I am a new 'Local Hurricane Correspondent' here on Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands.

Grand Cayman is as hot and dry as I can remember. As Mr. McTaggart posted we have had virtually no rain for a couple months and even what we had over winter was not very much. Looking at the satellite imagery it would appear that the Caribbean basin is void of cloud and upper level South Westerly flows and has been for sometime. Although bringing moisture to Central America from the Pacific none of it is reaching this far north and it seems as if it is keeping the basin dry and hot. Lets hope this changes soon as we need the rain very much.

Lawns are brown and trees and flowers and bush that is typically very rugged seems to be showing signs of the lack of water.

Other than that the winds are fairly typical easterly trades and seas are light making boaters and scuba divers likely very happy.

Mr. McTaggart has attached a great up to date weather link that shows the picture in numbers.

It is a picture perfect day in Cayman. Skies are mostly clear, with puffs of cumulus clouds floating by. Winds are ESE at 10 knots with gusts to 15 knots, Temp 87, at my location.

This year the rains have been few and far between. We have had only 2.7" at my location which is on the south side of the airport. According to the average figures, up until the end of April we were 5" in deficit. I recorded no rainfall in March. Hopefully we will have rain soon. We need the water! The cold fronts were dry this year.

If anyone interested, they can check out my weather station data at http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/wxpage.cgi?call=CW5175&last=12 and/or http://www.wunderground.com/weatherstation/WXDailyHistory.asp?ID=I90580545 hopefully I will get my own web page soon and stream the data.

Time to go to boating and to the beach.

- Sun is out!!

As I said earlier, the weather has been beautiful! We had a rain shower the other day at the skate park. First time its rained in months. Needless to say I think the lawn needed it.
Camping is a big thing here on Easter weekend, everybody claims their spot on the beach sets up tents BQQ's then goes about doing nothing but enjoying friends family and the fact that if you got a 9-5 job, you most likely got 4 days off which gives you lots of time to sleep one off before you gotta go back to work.
Today there is the "Million Dollar Run" a boat race here in Cayman that's about all I know, seeming as I have to go to work tomorrow and there will be no time to recover before going  and dealing with fifty 9-14 year olds (that don't understand what a hang over is!)
Sunday is the round the island sailing regatta which is more my pace. The boats leave the North Sound starting about noon.(depending on your handicap) The race finishes on the beach (7 mile) where the anchors are dropped and everybody heads to the beach for BBQ's and all the fun stuff that comes with having another day off in front of them.
Monday, the boats that decided to spend the night on anchor head back around to the North Sound and the comfort of homes and beds. The boat races are just a few of the many things going this weekend.
With June the first just around the corner the atmosphere on the islands is relaxed and chilled, well not to chilled heat index is around 94F. Guess summer is here!!
