Hello All - I made a little announcement a week ago that we are reopening but I jumped the gun a little. Having lived in Jamaica for 10 years hasn't taught me much, I guess. We are delayed a little - the date is now (and will stay there) Feb. 24th. There won't be any big Grand Opening now - we will get on our feet and have a party later. You will all be notified. Sorry, but the wait will be worth it. Hope to see you soon. Love, Ann

Can you believe it - Gamma doing the dirty on us and heading back towards
Jamaica.

I knew it would happen, yesterday we finally took down the storm boards that
have been covering the windows since JUNE, and then cleaned the windows so
we can now see out. Supplies are used up and musty hurricane suitcase was
emptied everything washed and put in it's proper place. Well, I for one am
taking this personally and am going to set up a protest on the seashore.

Stay safe everyone

Well it's time to put away the snorkels and masks and find anything that
resembles a surf board.

The waves are fantastic crashing high over the reefs on the north coast of
Jamaica. This is not a familiar sight in this area for this length of time.
If this keeps up, we will be giving Hawaii a run for their tourist money. I
am sorry for the folks who have come to go scuba diving and also the
fishermen who have their boats grounded.

Good Morning from the very windy north coast of Jamaica
The winds have been picking up since Saturday and are now quite strong with
very heavy seas. It is lovely to sit out and watch the white caps and wonder
if a surfboard might be on the Christmas list. Too windy for umbrellas, so
might as well leave them at home.

Hopefully TD27 will stay well clear of any land, I dearly want to get the
boards off my windows and clear out the supplies that seem to take over
precious space. It seems this season is going to take us right to the very
end and maybe then some!!!!!!!!!!

Stay safe

Sue M.

Friends
I don,t know what the heck is happening and to be
honest with you, i really don't care, all i know is
that there has been very little rain, and a lot of
sunshine over the past 24 hours, and from satellite
imagery it seems to be the case island wide.
Hallelujah!

Bless up and Jah Guide!

The weather over Jamaica has deteriorated rapidly over
the pass 24 hours, we have been having continuous rain
fall and some serious flooding island wide, this is
especially so over the northern sections of the
country. Our met service has issued a flash flood
warning for the entire country and it is expected to
get worst in the next 24 to 48 hours.

Bless!

- More Rain?
  • From: "Sue at Delja" <suew at delja.net>
  • Date: Thu, 27 Oct 2005 19:49:05 -0500
Just heard that our severe weather warning which was to expire at 5 pm has been reissued and a flash flood warning has been issued island wide. With all the rain we have been having, our over saturated ground cannot take much more.

I had the misfortune of travelling to Montego Bay yesterday and got caught in the flood in Salt Marsh in the afternoon. The water was about 3 -4 ft deep and it was moving extremely fast! The main road was literally a fast moving river. We were fortunate enough to have some locals push our vehicle through the deepest parts, but I had visions of being washed away!

With an ominous looking forecast, the next few days here in Jamaica don't look very well. Will keep you posted.

worst was about to rock our world, just goes to show
it ain't over till the DJ drops the mike. All the
folks in the Mexican peninsular, Cozumel & Cancun our
prayers and peace goes out to you all wishing you all
a speedy recovery. We here have our own crosses to
bear, the wide spread flooding are slowly subsiding
and we've already begun to pick up the pieces. All my
friends out there having doubts about coming here take
it from me, that would be a BIG mistake, the sun's
back out in all its glory and the fun did not stop,
don't believe me? Ask the MTV guys who launch their

- Wilma spins Tornado in Jamaica????
  • From: "Andre Marriott-Blake" <sean134 at msn.com>
  • Date: Thu, 20 Oct 2005 19:22:25 +0000
Dear Storm Carib,
Yesterday afternoon during one of the band of showers which affected the island a very strange thing occured in a community in the parish of St. Catherine. A funnel like cloud descended from the sky to the ground spinning violently, splitting trees, utility poles etc, it also destryed a Woman's predominantly wooden house. The woman was  on her bed when she heard a loud wind -like sound, she took cover under her bed and it was then that her house and many possesions were completely lifted from the ground,a passer-by came in and saved the woman, she was not seriously injured. Investigations are currently underway to determine if what occured was a tornado, if this is so it would be the first official report of a tornado in Jamaica.

Today the Weather is beautiful, sunshine and cool breeze. My prayers go out to those in Wilma's path.

Title: Message
Hello from Jamaica - I have been remiss in writing but it never seemed like this was going to happen and now it seems like it will never stop. It has been raining pretty much non-stop for four days and at least a week before that, heavily everyday. I don't remember the last time we saw real sunshine. Now the Met office is saying it will be winding down by tomorrow but looking at pictures of Wilma, I am dubious. We are seeing the spin-off now but it is severe with heavy rain, a little gusty wind and very heavy seas. The roads on the island are in very bad condition from being saturated for such a long period of time. We are all starting to feel a little moldy - but ..... that is life in paradise. Oct. will end and the sun will shine and it will be all forgotten. I hope the rest of the Caribbean will be able to say that. Good luck to all in the path of Wilma.

Hello Stormcarib,
In all my years I have never seen a storm quite like Wilma. In a period of 24 hours it transformed from a tropical storm to a Monsterous Cat 4 Hurricane with a pressure of 991 mb! This is almost of biblical proportions. What I also find strange is that Wilma is over 300 Miles away, yet still with each band of shower we experience here in Jamaica we experience Tropical Storm force wind gust, during Ivan we did not experience Tropical Strom force winds much less hurricane force winds until it was realy close. What I also find strange is the size of the eye, only 4 miles. this is very odd especially for a storm of this magnitude. Wilma without a doubt will be a storm to be remembered many years from now.

Hello everyone,
The rain from hurricane Wilma Continues to be an unwanted Guest in our island. We have not seen any sign of the sun here in Kingston in over 6 days.As long as I can remember i have never seen rain like this in Jamaica, not in Gilbert, Ivan, Dennis, Charley, Emily or any other system. This has caused extnsive flooding across the south coast, some structual damge ( building colapsed in Half-Way-Tree),Extensive road damage, among other ill effects. All schools are closed here in Jamaica until Friday( or possibly later). I am really not exaggertating, if anything I am understating this event, in all my life living here in Jamaica I have never experienced rain of this magnitude, and beleive it our not, though wilma is over 200 miles away from us, we have been experiencing Tropical Storm force gusts from time to time. I really hope that tomorrow is a better day. A word of advice to all those in this storm's path,Prepare for the worst and pray for the best, keep us in your prayers as I will keep you all.

Yours truly,

The rain has been going now for more than three days
non-stop we are now getting reports of flooding from
all over the island. Rivers have overflowed their
banks and landslides are beginning to occur in many
parts of the island, thankfully there have not been
any related deaths reported. Can anyone out there tell
us where wilma's heading? No one at the National
Hurricane Center seems to know.

Hi everyone,
It has been rainy Cats and Dog here in Jamaica for the past couple of days. This has caused Flash Flood Warnings to be posted for The entire island. Thogh t.d 24 is south west of us, it has caused numerouse roads to be impassable, numerous rivers to overflow their banks and many communites flooded. Td 24 has claimed its first life here in Kingston as a man was washed away in his car in Barbican. The current projection is for it to SLOWLY move away from the island, which means that more rain is expected but hopefully no more deaths.Lets just pray that this one fizzles out before it nears Cayman, Cuba or any other land mass.My prayers are with you all,Keep safe.

Here comes the rain again
Falling on my head like a memory
Falling on my head like a new emotion.
Ahh yes! this Eurythmics song seems very appropriate
on a day like this, it's been raining for the past Few
days, not hard but steady enough to be starting some
flooding by now in some parts of the island, no
reports of this yet though. It really seems this
season is hell bent on breaking all records on the
books.oh well!
I want to walk in the open wind
I want to talk like lovers do
I want to dive into your ocean
Is it raining with you?

- Nasty Weather
  • From: "Sue Morris" <sue.island at cwjamaica.com>
  • Date: Fri, 14 Oct 2005 11:00:05 -0400
HMMMM, we have to be careful what we wish for during the hot dry season.

Ocho Rios is experiencing the worst weather we have seen in a long time. It is not often that we get lightning hits in this area, usually they stay out at sea for all to watch and admire. Not today. Lightning and thunder all around. The rains are intense and I'm sure if I could get out of my yard, the flooding would be significant.

The helicopter that my husband operates has landed at Duncans trying to make it back to Ochi from Montego Bay, weather is just too bad.

Of course we have Heroes Weekend this weekend, with all kinds of activities for the 3 days, to include the launch of the new MTV Caribbean Channel, hopefully they are going to issue gum boots and brollys at the gate. Need to find a good book for the weekend as I'm sure the cable will be out.

Life in the tropics, we all love it

Hope everyone stays dry

- When will we ever get it right?
  • From: dervon fowler <reggaeweather at yahoo.com>
  • Date: Tue, 6 Sep 2005 14:56:00 -0700 (PDT)
Today i'm in a pensive mood, yea man i man a hold a
meditation, reflecting on the most recent disaster in
New Orleans and also past ones that have befall us
here in the Caribbean, and my conclusion is that we
humans are a naturally curious type of beings ones
that are spellbound by dangerous situations, and only
realize mortal danger when its staring us dead in the
face and by the time we realize it, it is almost
always too late. Rather than running at the first sign
of danger it seems we are always waiting to see if it
will pass us by. here in Jamaica we face this problem
every time a storm threatens, and i'm sure the
experience is the same in every territory through out
the Caribbean and the world even. Lets face it we will
never be able to eliminate these terrible waste of
life, because of our natural irrational behavior, but
alas, there is a lesson to be learned from this most
recent waste of life, resulting from "danger gazing",
and head for the hills at the first sign of danger.

And more pictures of the beach, small aircrafts flying

Hope you liked the pics. Later!

Ok, photos at last. The first one was taken yesterday
in the morning in my community. As can be seen are
grey skies. It got worse as the day went along and
last night we have medium to strong winds and lots of
rain. But that was about it for me.

Then this morning, hello sunlight!!!!

The second picture shows the Howard Cooke highway in
Montego Bay as well as the UDC beach. Sunny skies I
tell you. The next picture shows people enjoying the
day at the beach. Calm waves and warm waters, perfect!

Also, just to assure you that our airports are open,
as you can see in the final picture a large aircraft
arriving at the Sangster International Airport. While
at the beach I saw quite a few other airlines
arriving. People were out enjoying the sunlight, no
grey clouds to be seen.

Later!.

Monique

Just to finish the story - we had a few really bad hours last night on the southwest coast of Jamaica. But..we didn't lose electricity or water and it passed by midnight. There was a steady breeze all night and the sea is still a little wild but the sun is out and it is just another day in paradise. Good luck to all of you west of us. Til next time.

I just signed off an hour ago and things deteriorated here. Heavy, heavy rain, stiff breeze and the sea is really climbing and booming. I guess we are just that much closer to the centre of the storm to make the difference. I wonder how things are in Negril. The NHC said the NE quadrant would be the worst and that appears to be the case here. I leave near a galley and it is rising fast and really moving. You can see how cars get washed away by them. My rain gauge says 4 inches so far today.  I am hoping this passes soon. Will advise.

Hello from the soggy South Coast. If I were a good reporter I would go out and look at the rain gauge but that is not going to happen. It is raining heavily now, although there is very little wind. The sea is pretty serious though. The sound we are hearing the most is the booming on the beach and the reef that is a kilometre away.  I see on the satellite pictures that the eye of the storm is west of us so I am just wondering what the back end of this storm is holding. The local police say there isn't much trouble on the road, in terms of flooding - everyone is staying in so that is good. More if there are any developments.

We are still experiencing rain, wind with some thunder and lightning. I have attached a picture I took around 3:30 p.m. It is looking NE towards the sea....if you look close you can barely see the water. This is the clearest it has been all day!

The waves don't look that bad, and as I was coming down to my office to send this, I saw a container ship sailing by about 2 miles offshore, so the sea must be in pretty good shape.

We have not lost power or water, but my DSL has been sporadic all day (the phone line is fine - go figure!)...I am beginning to know how Noah felt and this is only the first day! Will check in if there is anything else to report, but for now all is quiet.

It is now a little after 2 pm and it has been raining steadily since 8 a.m. sometimes the rain dissipates into a light mist, other times it pours! It has been somewhat windy, with occassional gusts....but nothing major! I just spoke with my friend who lives on the sea and she said the conditions there were similar and that the waves were not that high - in fact she stated that Dennis produced much larger waves.

Even though there is a curfew I can hear a lot of cars out on the secondary road near here and with binoculars, between rain showers, I can see traffic (although slight) on the main road near White River.

Mom, don't worry! It's just like a typical Spring day in Indiana....only warmer!

Looks like we made it through another one unscathed.....More later if anything happens!

Apart from the seas it was a normal rainy day in Jamaica it was quite rough though there was no wind at all on land. The sea was the only real indication that Emily was in the area. I have attached a few picture taken within the Portmore and Hellshire area of St Catherine. Quite a few persons were on the road - none on the beach! - though not the normal amount; this is despite a curfew being in effect (this, curfew, really is no longer required). There were a number of business places open including gas stations and KFC - this while Emily is passing south of us!

Based on the TV report the market in down town Kingston was loaded with vendors but only few buyers.

We now await the next one - I presume there will be quite a few - for this season.

We have some amount of thunder last night and up to
9:00 am this morning we had medium winds. It is
raining outside now but every now and then we get a
slight pause. It is really overcast. Thank God we
still have power, water and internet services. I hope
that we do not really experience any outages. I am
also hoping that our neighbours in St. Thomas,
Kingston and Portland do not suffer any more damages.
But can you believe that some people in flood prone
areas of the island refuse to evacuate? Port Royal
residents say they are not leaving and to tell you the
truth Port Royal is very flat and has no mountains or
anything to protect them. I really pray that they
will be safe. Anyway, I wish all in the island a safe
day and I will make updates later (if my internet
service is still available).

Later!

It was quite still and very hot last night with a thin cloud cover (we could
see the moon). This morning the rain started at about 9am and as not stopped
since but this rain is only a steady drizzle! There is absolutely no wind
.....I really love this girl Emily, for Jamaica. I do hope she avoid the
other land areas as well - especially the Cayman Islands.

I must give credit to the government and its agencies who had put every
thing in place do deal with the ultimate. In fact quite few communities are
under curfew until 8pm and buses are on standby to evacuate residents from
some low lying areas in the south of the country - that obviously will not
be necessary now.

So for all you guys that had plans to come to Jamaica, come on down!

O.K. - Now things are starting to happen. The rain is falling, light but steady - the kind that doesn't go away soon, I am afraid. But our really startling feature is the sea. There is a barrier reef about one kilometre off shore, that acts as a very good protection for us, but there are big rollers hitting it now. This is rare here. It is all very different from last week's hurricane Dennis, when there were several freighters anchored off our shore for protection. Also the tide is very low. Our sea is usually pretty calm. My seafront was completely destroyed in Ivan so not much more can be done to it - I hope.  There is no one out and everyone seems to be hunkered down. As I look at the 11:00 update it looks like it should be far enough away that we don't have devastation - just a nasty day or two. Let's hope! More when there is something to say.

....and once more lucky... you wonder how many more times we will be.
This is the third hurricane that looked as if it were to come straight to us during the lat year (Ivan, Dennis, Emily) and then turned away.

Emily is bypassing us at quite a distance in the west.
As it is a compact system, we will only experience tropical storm force winds on the southern part of the island at the most and rain.

We have an island wide curfew until 8:00 p.m. ( as reported on the news) to avoid looting and to make evacuation due to flooding and land slides easier.
Many people don't even know about it.
So if any Jamaicans read this, remember to stay at home.

By tomorrow we should be fine .
I hope that it doesn't become a habit that we have to prepare for hurricanes every weekend, this is the second in a row.

Greetings from Annotto Bay, St. Mary

Things are relatively calm here as we sit on the outskirts of the storm.  Some wind and rain, but nothing major.  Very dark and cloudy with occasional strong gusts.  The local feeling seems to be that this storm will not be too seriuos or cause much damage over on this Northern side of the Island.

When I went to bed last night things had calmed down so at least I had a good nights sleep - only to awaken to a Cat. 4. But so far we aren't seeing any action on the south west coast. It is cloudy with a little light breeze, that I have come to know as the beginning of a hurricane. It would be lovely otherwise - but now we know what it is bringing. I understand it is raining in Kingston but not here yet. The air and sea are calm and we are frantically getting ready. It sounds a awful lot like Ivan to me - and we don't want that. More when things start to happen.

In Ocho Rios, I awoke this morning to gray skies, light winds and a few scattered rain drops. According to the wind models, we will probably only get Tropical Storm winds and lots of rain (which is NOT needed). Unfortunately I don't think the South Coast will fare as well.

Hello all:

Well not much happening in Montego Bay.  The sun is out and all seems like another nice warm day.  Emily is really getting closer and the fear of what might happen is getting greater especially now that some areas are waterlogged  which is the best recipe for land slides.  I must tell you though that Dennis did do a number of many parishes and did stuff that not even Ivan did and so right now is really not the time for another Hurricane.  The tourism sector will suffer the most as many people cancelled vacations to Jamaica due to Dennis and more are cancelling now because of Emily.  I really hope that agriculture will be speared as boy last year after Ivan the cost of tomatoes and other vegetables increased by almost 800%.  I've still not been able to afford bananas and I really do not know what is happening in terms of our export market there, but Jamaican banana chips are virtually non-existent in Montego Bay.  I still have items and water stocked up from last week so I should be ok for Emily but I am really concerned with those persons in St. Thomas, Portland and Kingston who were greatly affected by Dennis and who will now have to face Emily.  Anyway, will try to update you later on today.

Later!

Well, here we are. Deja vu all over again. I just came from the supermarket and everyone is there - wringing their hands wondering what we did to deserve another one - this is our second hurricane warning in a week, you know. It seems everyone is still prepared from a week ago. There is a lot of talk in the media about evacuating people in dangerous, flood-prone areas but we don't see any of that in our district. We are pretty well drained here so all we can say is bring it on. Right now the sun is out but there are clouds approaching that look like they are announcing something. The sea is as calm as it was last week, before Dennis. I will report again when there is a development. Wish us luck!

Hi Gert,
Sorry I could not update you  before, my internet connection was out due to Dennis.Anyways thank God we were spared the brunt of this system, in Portmore, where i live ( just 8 km from Kingston) we had minimal damage, wind gusted in excess of 30 miles per hour, the major problem was flooding and land slippage. The parish of St Thomas was the worst hit, many communites were flooded and crocodiles invaded communities(they were captured and brought to the Hope Zoo) Many bridges were broken down due to the running water and many rivers broke their banks.parishes thet had major flooding were St. Thomas, Portland, St. Andrew, St Catherine,St. Mary and Clarendon.Thankfully there were no reports of casualties and damage to our infrastructure were quite minimal.I hope Haiti and Cuba recover quickly, our prayers go out to them, and also to the Floridians which it will affect later on this week.

rained more today than yesterday. We had a few
showers throughout the day and just about an hour ago.
The sun has not shown its face yet but I bet I will

Well....sure enough, as I had thought.....the rain is what did us in this time and not the wind.......apparently the banking overflowed up in Seaforth and washed away 400-500 homes.....the Yallas bridge is gone and the Isington bypass which basically was our last route to Kingston has a lot of debris on the road and only passable with at 4x4 vehicle.....after getting through that, you have to then contend with the Bullbay fording .....and then if you get through that, then you have the Bullbay bridge.....hang in there everybody...we will get through this again......

Hi all:

Montego Bay looks ok this morning.  At about 10:15 am, it started raining pretty hard and there were medium winds.  Not all stores were open this morning but downtown Montego Bay basically looked like any other normal rainy morning.  It is clearing up a little as where I am now the rain has stopped falling.  Unfortunately, come communities in St. James are without power and water.  Unfortunately, a few transformers blew out yesterday and power has not yet been restored.  After speaking with a few people this morning, I found that many areas in St. James experienced heavy winds and rain while others such as my community experienced minimal stuff.  I've got some pictures which I hope to post this evening, so stay tuned.

Well we dodged that bullet and I am relieved. As I look at the radar I see the eye of the storm is well gone but it is raining very hard here now and there is more wind and thunder than we had all night. I guess it is one of the bands. My rain gauge said nearly 6 inches about an hour ago and that has been our biggest problem. The sea isn't particularly rough and we haven't had much wind - until now. I took a little drive out earlier and there is a little washing out of the roads and the gulleys are really flowing but no big problems in the Whitehouse area. Let's hope it stays that way. Well it's gone. God does work in mysterious ways.
Below are a few photos of my community taken
throughout the day. Wanted to post them as soon as I
took them but unfortunately I had problems connecting
to the internet. The first was taken at 2:08 pm,
second at 3:15pm, third at 3:32 p.m. and final at 5:23
pm. Not much happened in my community. We for the
most part were without rain. Right now nothing is
happening. Here and then you get a little sprinkle of
rain but that is it. I sort of expected winds and
heavy rain but I must say I was pleasantly surprised.
I am really rejoicing that this is all we got as I
really could not stand a lack of utilities. While we
are on that subject, an area in my community lost
power at about 7:00pm. It has not been restored and
will not be until tomorrow per the local power
company. This power outage does not seem to have been
due to Hurricane Dennis though. Anyway, I guess I
will be back at work tomorrow afternoon and I really
hope that all will be back to normal for all Jamaicans
by week end. Til tomorrow.....

..later!

According to the radar, the worst is past and all we have to look forward to is more rain. We were very fortunate....just a lot of rain and some wind with squalls near the coast. With the exception of a few coconut fronds on the ground in my yard, we came through intact.  I am hoping that there will not be much damage to other properties...all my pears and mangoes are still on the trees and I hope the bananas survived! We were very lucky and my thoughts and prayers go out to our friends in Cayman, Cuba and the Keys...stay safe!

This experience is bringing back Ivan to my mind. I forgot that one of the hardest things is waiting for it to come. It has been dark and foreboding all morning and the rain is just now starting to fall. It looks like the eye of the storm has passed slightly north of Jamaica so we won't see a direct hit but the forecasts are for a LOT of rain. The weather channel just mentioned 10 - 20 inches! Now that is more than Ivan so it wouldn't be good. Locally, we have made sure that the gulleys are clean so all we can do it wait. As I said, the rain is just beginning, there is no breeze at all and the sea is dead calm. There are three freighters moored off shore waiting it out. We have never seen that before. When there is anything to report, I will do it, if power is available.

Yet more photos. These were taken this morning. The
first was taken at 6:15 am, the second at 7:30 am and
the last at 9:45 am.

Still no major winds, rain or anything. It did rain
between 12midnight and about 3:00am this morning, but
we woke up to almost perfect sunlight. Now it is not
that sunny. Not much happening in my community in
terms of preparation. Water has been turned off in
one section of the community (although this has been
almost a daily occurrence for that area). One of the
local televison channels is not working in my
community and this morning there was a technical
problem with a very popular radio station. I don't
know if we can attribute this to Hurricane Dennis and
I really hope not as we had coverage from this tv and
radio station up to almost the last minute in Ivan.
Anyway, take care.

Greetings from Jamaica,

We are located 1 hour west of Port Antonio Jamaica and are expecting Hurricane Dennis to arrive within the next 24 hours.  Heavy rain has been falling periodically and wind has been minimal.
The people here are expecting that this early Hurricane will shift away from Jamaica, so at this time preparations seem to be minimal.  The sound of hammering can be heard on and off as people secure their zinc roofs with nails and cinderblocks.  Schools have been closed for Thursday July 7, as many of these structures serve as emergency shelters during Hurricanes and other weather emergencies.

Dennis has been upgraded to a Category 1 Hurricane and it is headed our way. I am on the farthest end of the island from Kingston so am not expecting too much activity until later tonight. It is VERY still here now - the sea is crystal clear and calm and there is no wind at all. I suppose this is the calm before the storm. I will write again tonight but if you don't hear - it is an electricity problem. In Ivan we were out for almost a month - Lord...I hope that doesn't happen again.

Hi gert,
Well, the season is here but I really did not expect to have to deal with a Hurricane.
The latest news on the Jamaican radio station is as following:

tropical storm Dennis has been upgraded to a cat 1 hurricane and will affect us in the next 24 hours
 as a:
130 km p.h. upper end cat 1 hurricane, right now the track shows a slightly SE movement

Dennis slowed down just a little,  22 km p.h, continuing to the NE coast of the Island (Portland, St. Mary)

All island gets rain, Dennis is a wide system engulfed in thunderstorms

Winds will start in the East, movement will go accross the island.

Difference to Ivan
Ivan moved along the South coast, this Hurricane follows the track of Allan in 1980

This time round I am on the on the North Coast in the vicinity of Falmouth, pretty close to the coast, don't feel so good about that, especially since the winds have increased.
But as you said, the rains will be the major problems and we have not recovered from Ivan yet.
We just got bananas back in the shops, I bought some today, as I most likely will not see any in the next 6 months and I love bananas.

Well we have to go through this and hope for the best.

Will try to give you further updates as we go through the night.
It will be tough to deal with another Hurricane so soon after Ivan and the season has just started.

5:20pm J-time  All is calm but cloudy in Kingston.  The stores are completely mad with everyone stocking up on hurricane supplies.  I keep checking weather.com and wunderground.com to catch the latest updates on Dennis.  Reported sustained winds are now at 80mph and Dennis is officially in Hurricane 1 status.  The big question everyone is asking is will this storm do the miraculous southern backtrack that Ivan took before hitting the mainland?  Of course, we are dealing with two entirely different storms here – Cat 1 (Dennis) vs. Cat. 4 (Ivan).  Strong winds are reported to be hitting the eastern part of Jamaica around 11pm tonight.  Right now – there is only a gentle breeze at best in Cherry Gardens, Kingston.  Will keep you posted as things progress (or better – deteriorate).

Well we will all have to wait and see how this one turns out....and only just after the island had begun to show signs of recovery from Ivan last year it is so sad to think we might be hit with another one so soon......I realize that it might not be a cat 4 like Ivan but with all the rain we have been having already, surely the road out by Roselle in St. Thomas will be severely damaged.....with just the rain alone parts of the roads have already erroded away....

I awoke this morning to torrential rainfalls and lightening at around 5:00am this morning but then shortly after nothing but blue skies and a piercing heat till now 1:20pm.....everybody is saying that is a sure sign that it is coming...well I do see clouds forming now......the generator is topped up .....and the water tanks are all filled......I will keep you updated as often as I can....keep safe everyone....

Here in Montego Bay, the sun is still out; however, I heard that Kingston has started experiencing rain.  Now that I have my digital camera, I hope to take a lot of pictures.  Jamaica cannot handle a storm or hurricane at this time or for the rest of the year.  I really do not want to go through another period without electricity and water, so I am just keeping my fingers crossed and leaving it all up to God.

Later!

Title: Again?

What the heck is going on? It's a bit early in the season to be staring down the barrel of another hurricane, and yet here we are, waiting on Dennis. We had the most spectacular lightning and thunder storm I've ever seen/heard last night. The rain started early this morning too, and it's still coming down VERY HEAVILY in Kingston. The streets and stores are packed with people rushing around to get their supplies; I suppose after Ivan just eight months ago, we all felt we'd have a few years' rest between hurricanes, but alas, here we go again!

One saving grace is the fact that it is already quite close and it is not yet a hurricane; this means that when/if it does hit us, it should not be worse than a Cat 1 or 2. One huge concern, however, is the tremendous amount of rain we're likely to experience as Dennis passes. There will probably be a lot of damage from flooding and landslides, particularly in the interior. This is bad news for the folks living there, as roads become impassable and may be cut off for a while.

As usual, we are hoping for the best, bracing for the worst.

Title: Can you say "rain"?

Yes, we are getting a good soaking in Jamaica today. Here in Kingston it is very dark (and it's 8 a.m.), very wet and relatively cool (it is June after all). I imagine that folks in the interior will be having to cope with landslides by tomorrow if the rain persists, as we've just been through a few weeks of wet weather, and the soil is already quite saturated. On a positive note, the rain helps to break the heat somewhat, which has been rather intense this week. If you're coming this way on holiday, fear not - there are lots of great ways to pass the time even when it's raining!

Hi all,
Though Arlene is over 400miles away, we in Jamaica have been having torrential rain over the past 3 days.I really do hope that it wont strenghten too much before it reaches Cuba. Lets just pray that this season wont be as bad as last year's, especially for Cayman, Jamaica, Grenada and FLORIDA.Ill keep you all updated at a later time.
