- Update

A quick report from Grand Cayman. The area of disturbed weather to the SW of
us looks to be getting organized according to the current satellite loop. I
note also that Roatan is reporting a west wind of 9 mph at this time (3pm
CDT) so to me it looks like this thing has got a surface circulation. It is
squally here right now with winds gusting to 20-25 mph a little while ago,
although right now it calmer than that. Our winds here are SSE which also
would jive with a surface low having formed. The 11:30 EDT Tropical Weather
Outlook said that the upper level winds were favourable for development and
that a recon plane would be sent out tomorrow if warranted. I think
everyone in the Cayman Islands and the Western Caribbean will want to keep a
close eye on this one. Hopefully nothing will come of it, but it is too
close for comfort.

Rain, Rain, and MORE Rain!!! High winds and seas are what we have been battered with these past few days. The rain is pouring down making it very hard for driving and streets are already flooded. The thunder is amazing! For now we are just trying to stay dry....

The heavy rain that plagued us all afternoon finally let up around 4PM.  It hasn't rained here on the south side for a couple of hours now and the seas have started to calm down.  The west side of the island had hardly any waves at all today.   The winds have died down and we are just getting the occasional gust.   Haven't heard  of any damage except maybe the odd tree branch coming down.
Hopefully tomorrow the sun will be shining again  :)

- 12:30 Update Claudette
  • From: "Lisa Blomgren" <blmgrn AT candw.ky>
  • Date: Thu, 10 Jul 2003 12:47:41 -0500
We are continuing to experience rain from Claudette, however, things have calmed considerably and although we are still under Tropical Storm Watch we all weathered the storm well.  Squawls are to be expected but norm for out rain bands of the storm.  Wave heights remain in the 10ft. range here on the South Side but winds have lost some of their strength at this point.  People are at work and things are business as usual for all but perhaps the watersports operations. We are now getting thunder along with some of the rains but that is all part of the storm and to be expected.  I will update again later.

Stay tuned................

As Tropical Storm Claudette continues on its projected path south of Grand CaymanWe have begun to experience heavy showers and gusty winds. It was a quiet night with interment storms and wind bands...needless to say the animals are on the bed! A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for Grand Cayman, while a Tropical Storm Watch continues for the Sister Islands of Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. It is dark, windy and rainy...but comfortable considering the very low winds...only 30-35kts. But, due to the wave action and winds together; all boats were put in safe harbour and there is no diving! Sad but true. Well, we are wet but safe... so it is a good day in Grand Cayman.

- 8 am Claudette Update
  • From: "Lisa Blomgren" <blmgrn AT candw.ky>
  • Date: Thu, 10 Jul 2003 08:21:13 -0500
Bye bye Claudette , rain has subsided at this point, winds have died down tremendously and wave heights are between 7-10 ft. Things are alot better now vs. 7 am. We will more than likely experience rain squawls as Claudette continues to move away from us which is normal and perhaps we are just in for a rainy day, grass needs it anyway!  Good luck to those in Mexico.......and glad to hear our friends in Jamaica weathered the storm well. Will update should things change, until then

At about 10:30 pm the sky opened up and the wind was really blowing from the
southeast. That lasted in my area for about 1/2 to 45 minutes. It is now
still a bit windy but not gusting and blowing as hard as before. Tt is still
slightly rain and there was some lighting and thunder. The storm must be
about south of us right now. Just checked my wind meter is it is reading
wind from the southeast. More later. Donna

- 7pm Update on Claudette
  • From: "Lisa Blomgren" <blmgrn AT candw.ky>
  • Date: Wed, 9 Jul 2003 19:32:10 -0500
Hi Guys...........

Well, at 5:30 we experienced a small squawl, very brief, winding had picked up substantially however it was only a very slight drizzle here on the South Side, nothing more than that. After about 15 minutes, the sun was high again and skies clear.  We are still expecting to receive showers however it wont be until later this p.m.  Some other areas of the island have had showers this afternoon such as downtown and in and around the airport area.. Skies right now on the South side are still clear, we expect within the next hour to start experiencing cloud coverage.   We are still watching Claudette closely, however, she may just give us some good ole' summer rain, much needed but short lived we hope!

Stay tuned!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is 5 pm and the sky is dark, the wind is blowing and we are getting some
rain. And with the look of the dark clouds we are going to get more rain.
But then again maybe this is just a little taste and the rest will come
later. We will see and keep you up dated. Glad that Jamaica faired well, so
far. Until later. Donna

Hi Guys....
So far, things remain calm here in Grand Cayman. We are now experiencing cloud coverage, and winds have picked up slightly however, paradise has sunny skies for the most part. Rain is not forecasted to begin until evening with the force of Claudette more than likely not being felt until 12 - 1am.   We are watching her closely   hopefully, she will just give us a bit of rain which is always helpful to us during the summer!

Stay tuned............

Hi Everyone,

Yes, we are still here. A close watch is being kept on Claudette but still alittle early to tell. Concerns are there and I expect probably today the hussle and bussel will pick up on preparedness. Today, Wednesday, here on the South side of the Island, the skies are clear the sun is shining -- a beatiful day so far in paradise.  Will update later, hoping our neighbors in Jamaica weather the storm ok.

It is now late in the afternoon and it seems like the rain is calming down a
bit. From this morning around 9 am we have had constant rain and some
serious thunder and lighting. From noon or before schools closed and
government offices. People were going home early if possible. Road are
flooded as well as some offices and I am sure homes. Will have to wait until
the 6 pm news to hear further information. No wind - very calm except in the
severe thunder storms. Airplanes still coming and going. That is it for now.

Hi Guys, just checking in on the first day of our 2003 Season.
We had a bit of a storm on May 19th which concerned some of us,
its been really, really dry here so it was a much needed rain, but I
think it was just a gentle reminder that it is that time of year again!
Thanks for the warning...........here to a safe season in 2003!
